I had no idea he had a kid, now he's the senseiguitarist
Turnips damn you’re right
@Turnips samuraidad is now samuraigranpa, sammy g is now samuraidad
@@Jonathanaturmom Sammy G would never, he must've adopted
Daddy G though?
They did the secks hehe
i think the most underrated band is the shop dawgs. their influence on modern music, and the emotion put into the songs beat all other bands.
The Beatles aint got nothing on them hell not evan my favorite band Tally Hall can compare
@@MichaelTurner856 you mean second favorite band I mean every musicians favorite band is the Shop Dawgs
He should really collaborate with Magik Mike and have him make the video "How Shop Dawgs changed modern music forever"
@@youtubesucksbutt10 yeah what was I thinking it isn't like Tally Hall is one of the most unique creative bands ever that changed my life for the better lmao
That's a bit of an understatement
Didn’t think me saying “GIANT STEPS” would get me in a samuraiguitarist video

Cool. You're internet famous. Use that 15 minutes of fame well.
@@tinyb4165 I'm just wondering how much money he made off of that
You writing songs for your kid is the most adorable thing I've heard in a long time. Good on you, Sammy!
@William Loudermilk That is also pretty dang cute.
I totally agree that Bohemian Rhapsody is overplayed that's the only reason I don't like the song.
I really love Dire Straits's songs especially Telegraph Road.
Now that's also a good song there
I'm a life long metal head and even I agree. Dire Straits are excellent.
Dire Straits is cheesy 80's rock but it's actually good.
@@manuelc3423 Yes a lot of there stuff is but a few like the aforementioned Telegraph Road, Money For Nothing and Brothers In Arms do stand out for me.
Sultans of Swing came out when I was first learning guitar and I loved it. I knew I'd never be able to play like Van Halen but I thought I might be able to learn something from Dire Straits.
"how weird would it be to sing the anthem before a movie in a movie theatre"
*Welcome to India where it was mandatory to play the national anthem before every movie from 2016 to 2018!!*
Still happens in Pakistan
still happens in Indai too
when i was in the US Army they played the national anthem before the movie began at the theater on base.
I remember they used to play the National Anthem at the end of the film in England (don't know about the rest of the UK, it isn't popular everywhere). Everyone stood up...to leave. lol B)
I’d be fine with it... if it was the Radiohead song, “The National Anthem.”
When he mentioned singing the anthem before a movie, I remembered when I was a kid. My parents were both retired military and we would always go to the small theater they had on the base nearby to see movies, as they were cheaper. Since it was a military base, they would play the national anthem and footage of things like the american flag and planes taking off, everyone would stand up and put their hands over their hearts. Then they’d play the movie like normal. The first time I went to a regular theater I was confused as to why that didn’t happen.
I’m a big rhcp fan, and I like the work they did with Dave and Josh, it’s definitely not better than what they did with John, but there are songs without John that I deeply enjoy
The Getaway is a pretty dope album, tbh.
Brandon Dean true asf
I'm a really big fan of I'm With You. Monarchy of Roses and Look Around are two of my go to happy songs.
One Hot Minute is by far my favourite RHCP album. Nothing after that album i've heard has been particularly inspiring to me as a whole, though appreciate the music is still really good
No comment on Hillel, eh?
Re: "Photograph", maybe he's not talking about *any* of Def Leppard, Ed Sheeran, or Nickelback. Maybe he's talking about Ringo Starr.
Nah, he's definitely talking about Weezer.
Yes
Wasn’t there an 80s band called Photograph?
I'm pretty sure every song named "photograph" is a sappy, emotionally manipulative, creatively bankrupt money grab.
I only know the Nickleback and the Ed Sheeran ones so maybe I am biased.
@@adrianwegner6962 Damn, I posted the Weezer theory before I saw your comment.
Give us the baby song. Now.
We need it
Dat teasing he did, lol...
Sammy: how weird would it be if they played the national anthem before a movie in a theater
Me(an Indian): wait, you guys don't do that ???
Exactly!
Is it common practice in India???
@@CugnoBrasso it is now, man.
Also in Pakistan
FYI- Paul Desmond wrote “Take 5.”
Dave Brubeck has other interesting songs, for example Blue Rondo, or The Duke.
I agree with you regarding national anthems at sporting events, and the place they have, and should hold, when it comes to patriotism. Well said
As someone from the states, it bothered me even more that we had the anthem at every sporting event, even at middle school level. That, paired with pledging allegiance to the flag every morning felt extremely odd as soon as I thought about it at all
Tbh I also found it really weird that you have to listen to the anthem before the school starts in Canada, one of the culture shocks when I did an exchange year there. Here in Europe I’ve luckily never heard the anthem in the last few years...
HOLD UP HOLD UP HOLD UP, YOU HAVE A CHILD
Yeah. He showed him at the end of his Octopus' Garden cover.
Also on his insta
You really are a bright person and I have learned a lot from this channel. I wish I could support the channel but I live in Iran and we can't have international financial interaction.
6:46 Actually, it was composed by Brubeck's saxophonist, Paul Desmond.
Finally someone said it.
More cowbell! Thank you , awesome vid. We love just hanging out with you like this.
9:25 you won't believe, but here in India they play the national in movie theatres before the movie starts
Your take on the Photograph choice was so funny lol. I also absolutely agree with Bohemian Rhapsody: Phenomenal song that just so happens to be played a lot.
LoL I thought Photograph was a Ringo Starr song...
@@songfulmusicofsongs ahh it also is!
Love your hufos, I love listening to them while practicing
Very articulate, lucid, and fair minded.
I agree with many of Samurai's assessments!
Really glad to hear you guys do an acknowledgment of country and its traditional custodians there. We do it here in Australia and I think that acknowledgement is really important.
This came out a minute ago. I wasn't waiting for this
The time has come: Stevie T and Sammy G need to cover SRV’s version of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition and title the video “Too Many Steves” :)
Yes
@Makoa The Ancient well maybe too many cooks will spoil the broth
@@joaoassumpcao3347 too many Steve's* LOL

Who else wants to hear "Fake Five"?
Just listen to "The Russians Are Coming" by Val Bennett.
Love your videos keep making'em
Curious if any asked about American Football's "Never Meant"
I really love the version of "Jolene" a performed by the white stripes
I really like the honestly in your "honest opinion"... Like you destroy kinds of gate keeping
Right on Samurai about Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway To Heaven. I've heard Stairway about 5000x in my lifetime and I'm still hearing new things every time! I will also sit in my car until the song is over.. even if it's the dentist appointment I'll be late to or I'm about to get my ear canal irrigated. Rock on!
Hey Sammy G, just wanted to point out that Paul Desmond actually wrote Take 5, not Dave Brubeck. Love your channel.
maybe its just me but this video looks even higher quality than normal! whatever ur doing keep it up!
honestly you just got a few extra points for me for that opinion regarding the use of the anthems.
I will go as far as saying using the anthem so much at every opportunity cheapens the meaning and value of it, we reserve the anthem for really important events and usually, if you are using it outside of this context you are in an extreme right gathering or something to that effect

He's basically your best friend
How are the Christmases with his family?
Just found out my cousin's ex worked with your friend's mom whom(?) worked with his girlfriend a few years ago
Lol
I play the Stairway solo note for note at least once every couple days.
I really like Def Leppard's Photograph, amazing song which got me more into Def Leppard, I'm a big Def Leppard fan and own their albums on vinyl and this song is a big one to me 👌
About Eric Johnson, his playing is deffinetly virtuosic, but not in a Petrucci or Mallmsteen kind of way. His music is so well thought, so melodic, i believe he is one of the few guitarists in the world to use all of his technique only to serve the music. Personally i have never felt he showed off even a little bit, even if some stuff he plays is very very hard to play, i believe that even the hardest thing he has played, was meant to serve the piece of music . Also that tone man...that stratocaster sounds like a hummingbird or something...
He showed Mike Boyd on the Skillshare ad!!! great creator!
Great video, pls make some more
Loved your national anthem explanation, accurate and not offensive at any time. So chill so samurai
Spot on w/ regards to both Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway, I feel about them, and treat them, the same way. Same thing regarding the national anthem down here in the States. I love my country, but I think the purpose behind playing the anthem before games cheapens it, especially when we're talking about the NFL games.
I was glad to hear your opinion on the playing of a national anthem at public events. I remember when I was on vacation in 77 and I saw the original Star wars at a movie theater in Owen Sound Ontario. I was there with my Canadian friends and just after the previews the Canadian National Anthem started playing and my friends told me to stand. I didn't recognize the song and joked about it being to slow to dance to. My friends had a hard time holding their laughing and I thought we were going to get kicked out of the movie before it even started.
I agree with you about your take on the anthem and its use! Also pretty much every HUFO you mentioned this time around. Honestly, I wonder if anyone asking any of this is truly questioning your taste, I sure am'nt
4:19 A Stevie covering a song by another Stevie?!
now we need StevieT to make a cover of the cover
and being discussed by another Steve.
In the USA they do play the national anthem in movie theaters on military bases before films. Thank you for another HUFO. I always enjoy these.
Now i want to know what your HUFO is on the White Stripes' version of Jolene (especially the Blackpool Lights live version). Also, Take Five wasn't written by Brubeck but by the alto sax of the band, Paul Desmond.
the most important thing: are beez, lable and pod ok? is annie ok?
I used to listen to Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody a lot in my younger years. Decades later, I haven't listened to Stairway to Heaven in a long, long, long time, but any time Bohemian Rhapsody pops up, I am there. I know it's been played a million times, but I just can't resist it. And I agree with your assessment on Here Comes The Sun. A perfect little gem and definitely George Harrison's greatest song. P.S. I am a new subscriber. A fan of Rick Beato, Adam Neely, Mary Spender and now you!
I actually experienced the national anthem played before a movie! I lived in Korea on a military base, and before every screening in the on base theater, they played both the American AND Korean anthems.
Super bizarre and awkward. It is such a weird practice to try and solemnize something as light-hearted as a movie or sporting event with a self-serious, vague patriotic ritual. It’s like paying a little propaganda tax before enjoying some entertainment.
Please do more of these they are best content on your channel
Actually that sounded like a dick thing to say do whatever you want love your channel
As someone who deeply loves jazz (and maybe a lot of jazz you don't like) I can totally see your point about Giant steps. It's more a clever exercise used by musicians to learn to play difficult chord changes fast than a beautiful tune. The strange thing is that the only version of it I liked was played by Joey Alexander, a very young jazz prodigy that unlike most other child prodigies who usually are just kids who play fast he has also the maturity to play it slow and it transform it in something that to my ears is more intriguing that the venerated version of Coltrane.
When I visited Thailand in 2010 we went to the movies a couple of times. They played the loyal anthem and everyone stood for that. It was a cool experience; very rousing.
Woah, you're from Winnipeg? I live so much closer to you (Twin Cities, MN) than I thought!
Your opinion on the national anthem really intrigued me, mainly because you referenced the Jets. As a Jets fan, while I don't live in Winnipeg, I believe the anthem is a great tradition, mainly when everyone chants true north. Otherwise, I agree with you completely
I thought you were gonna go a different way on the Stairway question. I feel like a lot of my friends always talk about how tired they are of Stairway, but it never gets old to me.
Especially the version off of Song remains the same. That solo is straight fire
Dude, Cliffs of Dover... Thank you for reminding me this song again!!!
How I haven't heard of Wheat Kings before today astounds me. It is a beautiful song.
9:25 we actually do that here in Jamaica, never left the country so I never questioned it.
@Sammy G. Hey do you have a recording of that Dave Brubek ska cover? If so, I'd love to hear it.
#HUFO do you have a list of lullabies for the Small Samurai? I picked up guitar years ago for this reason, but didn't learn any until the girl was grown.
We NEED to here your 30 second songs!
HAH! Here in the Philippines we do the anthem before movies thing.
I'd like to hear the glorious tongue bath that is your review of "comfortably numb" by that Wizard of Oz soundtrack band.
Sammy this dude said tongue bath!
Definitely agree with your points about patriotism and anthems. I disagree with some of your opinions on music but I still respect your opinions because of the calm and non-judgmental tone you carry. I feel that many use their UA-cam platform solely to justify their own beliefs and isolate into an echo chamber where the only correct opinion is their own. It is for this reason that I still enjoy your content while I have unsubscribed from many 'musicians' as they're mostly here to tell you that you're wrong if you don't like the exact things they do.
I thought that song by JM was “your bootys big as Disneyland”??? Man I need to get my ears checked
JM is Jim Morrison right?
😂 John something or other 😂
JM is Jason Mraz right?
John Mayer is a hell of a guitarist tho 🙌♥️
Id rather listen to that then that awful awful song.
I totally saw a show on the same RCHP/Mars Volta tour and had the same experience.
I 100%%%%%% agree on your opinion of blind patriotism, bordering nationalism. As an American (US), the entire love it or leave it mentality gets really under my skin. Wish it was okay to address our problems while still loving our country.
Curve ball on "Jolene" there. I like the Sisters of Mercy cover. Also the 33rpm version of Dolly Parton is neat.
White Stripes version is also a delight
I actually like Oh Canada as a song. I learned it many many years ago at a summer camp in northern Maine that had campers from both the US and Canada. It's easy enough to sing to work as part of a sing along. I'll concede that my opinion may be colored by the happy memories of that camp experience.
It’s amazing that he still wears the shop dawgs shirt
Loved the video, but it got me thinking about which of SG’s songs/arrangements I like best. If you haven’t heard him do “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, then stop what you’re doing and go listen to it. It’s breathtaking.
Thumbs up just for your take on national anthems!
What do you mean at 6:42ish? I get that you can write in a different time signature just for the sake of it (looking at you Animals As Leaders), but is there a REASON in music to write in any specific TS? I never lent it much thought and now I need to know!
I read Coltrane quoted as saying "missing a chord change in a Thelonius Monk tune is like falling down an elevator shaft". I was inspired by the thought that 'Trane had ever missed a change.
I was lucky enough to see The Mars Volta at the House of Blues in Chicago Probably one of the best shows I had ever been to. This may have been around 2003 or 04, possibly 05. It was while they were touring on their first album.
9:00 you fuckin nailed it sammy g. That is my exact feelings on the same subject
THANK YOU for addressing Bohemian Rhapsody. Don't get me wrong, I love the song, but it's probably the one on the album I look forward to least when I put it on. That entire album is absolutely brilliant, start to finish, so Bohemian Rhapsody and You're My Best Friend (the two bits of it I've heard the most) are gonna be the two bits that I'm least excited by. But of course, that's all relative, and I'd still rather listen to either of those than to most other songs out there.
Also have to agree about the anthem. I hope more Canadians share your view- I think the ability to recognise that our country is deeply flawed in some ways is important. Can't solve problems if you pretend there aren't any. I don't know if it's just a local thing, or if it's because I have no interest in sports, but I very rarely hear the anthem out here. During high school though, and even some events at university, every assembly we had would always be prefaced with an acknowledgement of the indigenous people whose land we're on, even if it wasn't then followed by the anthem.
I love your take on the anthem man. We’re a country full of great people, but we’ve got a history we’ve yet to remedy. We scoff at our southern neighbour’s pledge to the flag yet the anthem isn’t that far off. A great nuanced take on a complex issue.
Please release an album of your children songs!!!
Always love hearing fellow Canadians talk about the Hip and Gord, its a feeling we just all know instinctively.
Can you have an updated guitar collection video?
I agree with you on your anthem point.
100% with you on anthems. Same with The Hip.
I would love to see him come out with a podcast
liked for the story about giant steps, more personal than what i usually see here
Hey SammyG! I found it super funny that you brought up the question of why we don’t sing our national anthems before watching a movie in theaters. You may find it interesting to know that it is a time honored tradition in the U.S. military to stand for our national anthem before any film screened on a military post. I personally believe that our collective anthems should be celebrated and sung as a reminder of each citizen’s shared heritage. Unfortunately, I think they have received a bad label as an exercise in blind submission to government authority and bad policy, instead of a symbol of universal pride. Anyhow, I love your channel and always learn a lot. Thanks for everything!
I think me and this dude are very similar people and it cracks me up.
what is some of the cheaper ways to make decent recordings please do a video of it
Totally agree on the anthems before games. In Australia they don't stand and sing before most rugby or AFL fixtures, the players run out and get playing right away. Way better. They do a bit more pre game ceremony for Grand Finals and other more important games. But in Canada playing it before hockey games, specially minor hockey, is a prime example of just doing something because everybody else is doing it.
In Europe we don't use our national anthem before national sport events, we only do that on international events such as the World Cup or the Olympics where in fact you support an entire nation
I first heard Jolene sung by Me Firsr And The Gimmes Gimmes. I also love the Dolly version as well
In regards to Bohemian Rhapsody, I think people focus on the crazy middle section so much that they overlook just how heart wrenching that first section is.
You are 100% right on bohemian rhapsody, I worked at a karaoke bar for several years and heard people butcher it 2-3x per weekend.
Folks if you go to sing karaoke, have pity on the staff and think twice before putting your name down for this song and pick something in your range
Hey Steve, I have been a follower of your Instagram account for months and I turned on notifications for Storys, and I did get notified for one this weekend. However this already the second time that I didn’t get a notification for HUFO story. Why? I have questions as well.
it's because Instagram is owned by Facebook and the mighty Zuck's algorithm knows what's best for you.
If you’re a casual Queen fan and love Bo’ Rhapsody then check out “Millionaire Waltz”. It’s like a little brother compared but it’s arranged & played perfectly and kicks ass all the same!
Innuendo and March Of The Black Queen are really underrated aswell.
@@heynn1459 there's so much gold that goes un noticed with Queen I think. Btw hope Athlead is going well for you and Daryl over in Philly 😂
If you haven't already you should check out the slowed down version of Jolene (made by playing the record at the wrong speed). Someone put me onto it It recently, it transforms the song into a whole new experience! totally amazing
Totally with you on the anthem thing. I think it's really weird. I'm in the states and after the 2016 election my friends and I talked about how angry and disappointed the anthem made us feel every week when we went to the local college hockey games.
What do you think about that shop dawgs Band?
Yo!! Sammy G giving a shout-out (kinda) to Mike Boyd. Two of my favorite youtubers!
