      @@Soundscapemind I have loved Neil Young's playing as far back as the Buffalo Springfield. While Steven Stills played very melodic thought out solo's, Neil sounded (and still does) like he has no idea about what the next note will be. He walks a tightrope on every solo but it's part of what makes him Neil Young and so unique. He plays guitar with a feel like Keith Richards (and even Charlie watts drumming). They always seems to be on the verge of just losing the song but never do. Neil is very refreshing, never boring and his songs are excellent.

    I definitely agree about the "songwriting over guitar" idea. That's why I consider myself a "musician" or a "producer", rather than a "guitarist." For me (and I know this is different for everyone), guitar is a means of creating the songs that I want to create. If I can create those songs by other means and be happy with the result, that's fine too. I do want to improve my skills with guitar (because I think it'll open some doors for me musically), but I see it as just another tool in my toolbox, rather than the be-all-end-all of musical expression.

As i said no knock on joe but Neil Young is more appealing too the masses and too me also. I can listen to Vai Satch these guys for an hour or so them im done. Could listen too Neil all day. @leob4403 3 роки тому

      @@brianforgie5515 I'm not the type of person that wants music to be soft noise in the background. I get it, Neil Young is easy to digest, same as country pop and so on, nothing you have to think about too much. While I have practiced Satriani tunes for 20 years and I'm still not there yet, and I still get a kick out of hearing his songs. The dynamic composition is just incredible, changes in keys, tempos, rhythm, scales and so on. His music takes you on a journey. While I don't need to hear Heart of gold or Rockin the free world ever again, they are already ingrained in my memory, and I know what they are all about, they are not growing with each listen. In the genre of Neil Young I'd rather listen to Creedence/Fogerty for example. Or as a pure singer/songwriter Nick Drake for example, what he did with different tunings and so on is much more interesting than Young.

    And Hendrix was not only a great guitarist, a great writer but also great interpreting songs of others. Especially Bob Dylan. Dude I really appreciate your HUFO series, along with your other videos, and you're able to articulate your thoughts in a way I can relate to. That being said, I believe you could find yourself into the music of the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia if given the right circumstances or timing in your life. Jerry and the Dead have been a real inspiration for me, and when it comes to songwriting there's so much there. I feel like it's just a matter of time for you to dig through and find the songs that resonate with you. They have such a vast catalogue that spans different decades and genres. I suggest the song Eyes Of The World from their 1990 release Without A Net. Branford Marsalis sits in on that one and Jerry's playing is really great. The whole album is great really. Thanks for what you do. You're a light on the internet man.

    Love the vid samurai. No one I saw mentioned it, but I appreciate that Dave Matthews was on this list. Once I could start playing barre chords, I started learning Dave's style. It is very unorthodox, but is what I love about it. The notes are there, the voicing and positioning is just different which leads to a unique sound. This style has lent itself to use some of those chord shapes when I play with my buddy who uses a lot of open or basic barre chords in his original songs and it has provided very good results.

    Nicely done. Your opinions were balanced with enough substance so that the comments always seemed well thought out and fair. I agree with most of your comments, especially on Knopfler. The part about guitsr just being your medium of expression, and not your reason for enjoying music resonated with me. I play bass, but when I listen to music with bass in it, I don't care how technically proficient the bassist is, I care about whether or not they're making good music. I'm just as happy chugging along to a simple song as I am playing something busier

And pretty sure he was using a Kemper or the like this last tour as there was no onstage amplification at all, yet the tone was killer! I just kick myself as a life long fan I didn't see him earlier as his touring now gets less and less as he approaches 70. Make the effort to see him, it's worth it!

Then your summation on why you play guitar, I sing and write for myself, don’t record, don’t play live, it’s kind of my living journal, channeling whoever that day brought me. That’s where the real power of music is. Give me raw and real over sterile and perfect any day.

  • @raydandy4899
    @raydandy4899 4 роки тому

    I love your explanation about loving many different kinds of music with or without guitars. I have been playing and gigging for a few decades now and that's the way I feel. Although guitar is my main instrument I also play very keyboard and bass and if necessary and when called for will play any of them with the same amount of pleasure. The songs are the most important thing to me followed by the vocals (great 3-4 part harmony trumps anything for me) then the instruments that support the song. Give me a great song with mediocre backing over an instrumental that is full of great technique but no solid melody or emotion. Playing faster than a speeding bullet may initially impress me then I easily move on and possibly never return to that kind of musical free-for-all.
    As for Jerry Garcia....I was dragged to a Grateful Dead concert in the early 70's by some friends. This band was to be kind.........an above average garage band. They sounded like a new band that didn't have any good songs and could barely play. (I know....here comes comes the wrath of the Dead heads.) Jerry Garcia knew a few basic scales played over and over (and over) with no emotion or relevance to the song. Again, I am a song first person and aside from a few (very few) instances they just didn't have the material to start with. The solos were just plopped into an opening in the song. You can take any Jerry Garcia solo and basically cut and paste it into any Dead song and it would be the same thing. No thought or emotional connection to the song. Just my opinion. Let the hate begin.
