That stove jack flap is not only to cover the hole when the stove is not installed, but also as a flap above the jack even when a pipe is installed to prevent water from above from hitting the pipe and dripping in. You'll definitely want to repair that flap with a good patch of cloth and waterproofing for the weather.

Cut the female ends off the existing pipe sections so they are short enough to fit in your stove. The total height will of course be a little shorter - so add another section if you need it. Problem solved.

If you do want to cut the pipes, I recommend making a jig that nestles the pipe and provides an end-stop for male end then mount a Dremel with cut-off wheel at the correct position on the other end. That should make clean consistent cuts.

In Germany fatwood is known as "Kienspan". In medieval times they used long kindlings of Kienspan to light up houses. It still was used in the 19th century by people that couldn't afford candles.
They also used it in mining. Miners held a piece of burning Kienspan with their teeth to have a light in their working space.
I use fatwood for starting fire, but I use only some shavings. Fine shavings of fatwood will take a spark from a ferro rod pretty easy, even if wet.
The fatwood Cody used looks a lot like the stuff you are able to buy at walmart. No problem with that. People buy and use lots of artificial fire starters like fatrope, waxed sawshavings or petroleum soaked wood.
I am going into the woods, and I am looking for old, rotten stumps of windfallen pine trees. If you are lucky, you'll find plenty of fatwood or Kienspan in the root system. If there are solid, hard parts in an otherwise rotten stump, you probably have fatwood.
I found about 20 lbs five weeks ago when walking the dog in a pine forrest. It might have been the core of an old pine tree, where everything around has rotted away and only the solid core, saturated with sap, stayed together. It just was lying there on the ground.

I've been a viewer for a long time, rarely do I comment. I really enjoy how you talk about granddad, Many fond memories .....and life lessons came to me through my grandfather. He had an easier time teaching me than my father did. I recently took my 12 yr old son on his first elk hunt, though we we're comfortably glamping in a Colorado mountain cabin, it did have the nostalgic feel of the men gathering for the annual hunt.

That's the cutest little wood stove! I just want to pet it... is it hot?
I remember in my college years I spent a year or two in an unheated flat. I bought a little coal stove at a ma & pa hardware store about 6 blocks away and carried it home. Then I went back and bought a bag of coal and carried THAT home. It was heaven! I had previously spent a winter in a room of an unheated house.
I can attest that coal heat was impressively better than unheated. I went home to my parents' on weekends to get warm...
The stove, like the chimney, was formed sheet metal, so I'm sure that cast iron stove can handle coal, which is TONS more efficient than even greasewood.

That way the flames can't just shoot straight up and out. Helps out with burning the extra smoke and getting more out of your wood. Plus, less smoke outside. Nothing fancy, just a bent sheet over the exhaust. \_/

@OBAMFSpike oh ok, no that wasn’t the problem. I had my entire chimney fall over. Gusts were up to 45 mph. I’ve heard of guy lines for chimneys but would love to see if there are better solutions out there.

Put your dampener close to the celing. It exposes more fire box heat by surface area to the tent.

Growing up in the south east, we called the pitch wood "light-r-not". Pull it straight out of a stream and it would light. I would really like to go winter camping with a hot tent and portable wood stove. There are companies that make some that are totally collapsible and man backpackable (if that's even a word). I enjoyed watching the video.

I'm really glad you leave in those 'uh-oh' moments. Seeing other people mess up helps me to remember that we're all human, and I'm not the only one who messes up. I think we tend to be a little too hard on ourselves sometimes.

Was looking for a small canvas tent over the summer , couldn't bring myself to buy a import and hadn't heard of the company that makes these tents so I did with out. Looked at they're website and I don't feel the prices are bad at all. Thank you for sharing this video.

A string to measure the circumference and then divide in half for the holes is what I do, then measure from one end of the pipe to make both holes even spaced.

You’re keeping your cool on camera but I know you are beyond frustrated that you cut that flap and drilled that hole wrong LOL

    • @camperjack2620

Well, he could have measured half way up the pipe after it snapped together, and made marks on both sides with a piece of tape. Then he could have used a piece of parachute cord and wrapped it once around like a cloth measuring tape. Then match the ends together so the cord is half as long, and make the marks on the tape for the X on each side to drill. Now is the time when the guy with the 22 steps in, and drills the hole perfectly through both X marks. Or use a drill. No shame. Me, I used to start the hole with a good center punch so the drill would not scoot.

that's a cute little stove ,, i don't think i have ever seen a camp stove like it , i made one myself out of a 100 pound propane tank that i use to heat my garage ,it'll heat my 30x40 uninsulated steel building very well i can get it to 60F using a draft blower and oil dripper even when it's -10F outside ,,i made a smaller one out of a #30 tank a couple years ago that works great as well ,,i use it both when camping and in my work shop trailer which is just an old semi trailer and it'll cook you out of it if you have a hot fire,, i actually love wood heat ,, my family heats oour farm house with a big wood stove

ohhh nooooo, cutting through the canvas was such a "groan moment".
Im so glad you could laugh at your mistake, I would have kicked myself all day, and tried to order a new flap I could sew on.....but, really refreshing to see your reaction, thankyou WS!
This is/was a great video series, I would love someday to get a set up like this, looks super spacious, yet cozy

With a stove that small you will have to load more wood pretty frequently in frigid temperatures.

That's a cute little burner or stove.
I'm not good at metal work but I reckon I could make a version out of wood.
I'd probably have to use a very slow burning wood to make sure the fire wood burns instead of my stove.
Might not last as many years as the metal type, but should do the job.
