I agree, more central, more accessible, and it's probably not a huge deal, but farther away from the ammo storage.

Agree 100%. If it gets REALLY cold, the far away workbenches could be shifted a bit. I would suggest casters on the benches anyway ( the kind you can drop down) so the legs are firmly on the slab.

I would also raise it up 18", using a thick bed of bricks or stone, which will retain tons of heat, and maybe even do a firebrick panel on the wall behind it for the same purpose.

I'd go with option 2. More centrally located and would throw more heat to the area where you'd be pulling in vehicles to work on. Option 3 just seems too out of the way and would be in the way to get around the work bench.

and leave some space between the stove and the bench to fit a wheel barrow of wood (or whatever you use to get the wood inside). Makes a safe spill zone for stuff you are doing on the bench at the same time :-)

I feel this is the best location for all of the reasons that everyone eles said and also it still will let you have the area where the woodworking bench is now as a sitting area if you look like without the wood stove too close.

I’d go with option 2. Move your bench down and send her home. It’s obviously the most centrally located, and in range of most of the shop. Also the most visible from what I can tell. A little inconvenient that it will have to be moved a bit more to the right then ideal, to compensate for the roof beam, but I think it’s worth it.

I would elevate it in the spot where the lathe is located. It is nearer the both work spaces and could easily use a fan to direct the heat to or away from each area. It would be visible from most areas as well. The third spot you pointed out would be my second choice. But I would save that high wall as it is useful for displaying large things (like the at taxidermy) and other interesting things you might collect. Get some neon signage for it...

Option Number 1. As somebody who grew up in a “professional homeowner” shop that was also a gathering place for the neighborhood men, i can tell you placement that encourages the gathering will be more important than any of the other practical/functional reasons for placement.
As others have pointed out, yes 2 would be more centrally located for heating purposes, but it is also centrally located meaning you will be having to dodge this hot thing all the time. And while it might be closer to your work if you pull something in to work on it, remember the heat is in the work. And you don’t want the gathering group all up on you while you are working on something.
Some mentioned not having it that close to firearms and supplies, but I think I remember you saying you’d move those cabinets, so that wouldn’t be an issue.
With all that being said, I have more memories of the guys hanging around that shop stove than probably any other memory growing up. The district judges, farmers, loggers, mechanics, grading contractors, carpenters, and hardware store managers that gathered around that stove have helped shape me more than I ever realized was happening at the time. I learned about aspects of life that I would never have learned at my house. The men that gathered at that stove were/are giants of men. To this day, 40 years later, that stove is still a gathering spot for men who would literally do anything for each other, some of which are 3rd and 4th generations of the original group. More boys/young men need the opportunity to gather around a stove like that to learn the life lessons I had the blessing of encountering first hand.

It's not a problem. You would have to intentionally perform multiple reckless & really stupid acts would need to occur in order to stand any remote chance in hell of a fire. -- Like pouring/splashing -lots- of (not diesel) fuel on the ground in front of the stove with the stove door open and a big fire going. -- And if Cody raises the stove up as he mentioned (he should) then it would be even harder to create a fire from the fuel. If conditions are made safe for nearby flammable gasses, like propane, then there is most certainly no risk from the liquid fuels.

    I vote for option 2.
    - It will most likely always be in the wide shots
    - It is in a central location, heating everything mostly equally
    - It would fit optically quite nicely as the black pipe is a nice contrast to the wood
    - In case you actually have to house your family in the workshop you can place their bedding right in front of the stove without having to move any of your equipment around
    Good video as always, Cody.

I think I would go with option 2, as option 3 altho is the neatest I fear it might be to close and causeing you to over heat when doing woodworking. I used to work in a timber yard, and in winter nothing worse then having to keep taking off and putting back in layers when changing from working outside to inside and back again. Also from a videography stand point, if you have it in option 2 you can use a wide angle and get the flames/fireplace in frame to create some great shots, but with option 3 it will be side on so you wont see them and it might give you some very odd lighting with that glass front when filming. Also Merry Christmas from England & Hope you have a great time!

Option 3 because it is closest to where you spend most of your time. But a lot of people's argument for option 2 as more central was a good idea especially since it is not just central to the work stations but also for when you are working on the shop floor.
But again if you plan on having that sitting area and doing most work by option three area and you want quick and easy access and to keep it within easy eye sight then I'd suggest going with option 3. But I also agree with what someone else mentioned about keeping it away from ammo storage. So I would move the ammo if it is near the option 3 location but I am sure you would have thought of that as well as you are a pretty smart cookie.
Later, love the channel been a fan for a few years now and it has helped me in multiple things taught me a lot that my grandpa never had the chance to or that my dad didn't have the time because of work or because it wasn't his area of expertise.

While Position 3 might look good on woodworking/"cartridge dispersal unit" videos, I think it would eventually prove to be in the way, especially with any adjacent fuel supply. when you have your "town meetings." I also agree with the previous comment about overheating that corner of your shop. If it were my shop, I'd look at halfway between Position 2 and where you set the crate down with your forklift: gets it a little more out towards the center and away from right up against a work area. Yeah, you might have to walk an extra 4 - 6 feet to get from woodworking to metal working, but the exercise helps warm you up ...
Seriously, if the manufacturer/experts/building code administrators say you can put it as close as X inches from a wall, I'd put it 2X (twice as far) inches away. You want to heat the shop, not the outside wall.

I personally would be hesitant to have a wood stove that close to all my firearms and supplies. Not necessarily just for fire risk, that is most likely pretty low, but more in regards to the constant heating and cooling of things. It may no matter much though. A perk of #3 is that it would make a beautiful camera shot with the wood stove and wood boarding behind it. #2 would serve just as well for a social gather but may not be quite as good looking. #2 might also help with a little bit more even heating throughout the shop. Either way should work well enough.

#2 is the best, always stay as close to the center as you can in a large open space. otherwise, one side of the building will be colder than the other unless you add fans to move the air. Here is Minnesota where we frequently spent January and February below zero this is standard procedure. Wood stoves go in the center of the house. Same with all the Amish around us. They live without fans and electricity to move the air around their houses. Very smart people.

    • @ivermec-tin666
      @ivermec-tin666 3 роки тому

Agreed. This location will make your primary work areas comfortable, but not sweltering. The stove is primarily a utilitarian heat source. The beauty of the flame is a distant secondary benefit.
I would not disrupt the woodworking area, personally. I would not build a permanent dedicated lounge area, particularly if you elevate the platform 18 inches. Instead, I would purchase or make a couple of stools and a bunch of folding wooden chairs for gatherings. One needs to be able to move as close to a fire as the conditions warrant. There is a reason that the old Grange Halls have no real furniture, just folding chairs and tables... Folding chairs give you that flexibility. I would still move the gun safe, as that would be the ideal location for a firewood stack, indoors, and at the ready.
If you are really intent on that corner for meetings, then you can put lever actuated casters on the woodworking bench, and move it away as needed while leaving everything else in place. You could point the face of the stove in that direction at install, if you wish. This would put the light of the fire in the area where you spend most of your time. The heat is going to radiate 360 in any case.

    Cody,
    1. Raising the stove 18” is good fire safety practice in a garage or shop. Your back will also thank you.
    2. With your forklift, I’m envisioning you having a pallet size wood box that you would keep things tidy and be able to drive in and out of the shop to refill. Or use the front loader on your tractor. Plan appropriately.
    3. If you’re trying to warm the whole shop, you’re going to want a hot fire. Anywhere within ten feet is going to be very hot and hazardous or uncomfortable to work near. So next to the bench presents issues. Also think about inconvenience of doffing and donning layers as you move about the shop.
    4. Sidewall vent vs. roof consider your possible snow load and impacts.
    5. I believe you said you’d move the gun cabinets for option 3. Obviously you need to consider everything in proximity to the stove and impact of temperature changes.
    6. Aside from some low speed fans to push heat down, you could also consider a horizontal fan circulating air blowing toward your bench. This would also help circulate air in the summer to cool that area.
Hope that helps cover some issues you may have not considered

That's a powerful stove. Maybe don't put it too close to where you work most. You will over heat. consider where you can store the immediate use firewood too.

Hello Cody. Number 3 location for me. You will be able to see the wood burning from most work areas and be more central. That’s why you have chosen a glass front to see the fire on those cold days. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Regards

I would take position 2, where the lathe is now. To me that seems more central to me, if you work on the vice side of the bench you still got heat. it's far away from any doors. I think position 2 is ample enough to heat the wood and gun shop areas. You could put it sideways with the door towards the woodshop even. if you want to see it if you turn that area into a 'man cave' :P (but I would keep the back to the wall even in position 2. I think if you put it next to the clock in that location, you will heat that area to hot and the further away positions to cold.

    GREAT choice of wood stove!
All I know is here in the California Sierra on COLD evenings like tonight a high quality wood burning stove is a literal godsend.
We also have an L L Bean red enamel Lattice Stovetop Steamer with water on top of the stove which ads warm moist air to the room, which also helps prevent wood paneling, wood floors, wood furniture from drying out in winter.

"I gave the folks in Vermont special West Coast Status, so we're good.." Gotta love it! I like the stove in location #2... yes it would be more in the way, but I think that will be more of a benefit, then a distraction. For example when your group is hanging out in your shop, having the stove more in the open will be nice.

FWIW I like it where it sits in the middle of the room. I have my #18 Army Cannon pot belly stove in the middle of one corners of my shop with my lathe, end mill and drill press behind it. Those are things I rarely use but are completely accessible. Being somewhat in the middle the room heats pretty evenly.

Wherever you put it, you might consider creating shed or lean-to on the outside of the pole building to store a supply of firewood, with a small door to access it from the inside within steps of the wood stove. We were able to incorporate a small wood box (approx. 2'x3'x3' with access from the outside and the inside) into the design of our home right next to each of the two wood stoves (one above the other on two floors). This adds a great deal of convenience and eliminates a lot of mess. We added a wood shed (24'x16') near that end of the house so that filling the wood boxes requires only a few steps and is only necessary every few days.

Cody, please let me give you a tip on that roof boot (red silicone). Orient it like a diamond on the roof rather than squaring it up with the orientation of the building. This will help with water diversion and will deter leaks and standing water. I hope that makes sense. Essentially you will be pointing one corner of the boot to the eave and the opposite corner will be pointed to the ridge. I've been in the metal building industry for over a decade and it is a best practice. Best wishes and good luck on the project.

Hey Cody, long time viewer first time caller...or should I say commenter 😂. Anyway, I think option 2, where the lathe is, would be the most fitting location. Not only will it provide more heat throughout the shop, you’ll still be able to admire the fire from the “conference” area. maybe rotating it 90* so the rear is facing the table can be an option. Either way, looking forward to see what you decide to do. Love your videos, it’s great to see an honest man actually giving back to his community. Merry Christmas to you and the family ✌🏼

I’d say avoid your oils etc under your bench, don’t think it’s a good idea to be constantly temperature cycling your oil storage. Just think about where you will be adding the extension, it’s better to be central so you can evenly heat the whole area. It’s a big stove so it might be too hot in option 3 if you always working close to it, definitely not option 2 because of the oils. I think option 1 will be most central when the extension gets completed?

Many different types of animals get into chimneys. Sometimes even large mammals can get stuck or die within chimneys. You don't want a fire with an animal lodged in your chimney. You won't get your fire going properly and the "aroma" can be pretty obscene.

I prefer the 3rd option the most but option 2 is more centrally located for heat distribution. My father when he built my childhood home in LaGrande Oregon, built a hearth tall enough to be able to sit on. I loved this growing up. He also build a wood box which we put our newspapers in all year long to have to start the 🔥 each day. Once stalked with wood each night we wouldn't have to go back outside in the cold to get more wood. Our back covered patio was big enough to store 7 cords of wood each winter. Now days we've had to replace that old wood stove with a gas stove as my parents are in their later years now, but it sits up there on that hearth just as pretty.
