there is a few reasons. Firstly Panels shouldnt be that obvious to begin with. It also gives you control to move the edge loops closer to make them more subtle if you need to later. Also if we wanted to make a background version and we remove the supporting edges you will now have massive gaps between the panels as the middle edge has now moved due to the bevel

I'm curious why you don't just bevel the edges to make the panels more visible when not smoothed?
