Phil - Bravo!!! Will share this video w/DJ friends from my gen. Much better than me trying to explain. In my 60s, club/radio DJ '70s-'90s. I retired, bought a controller, and was LOST, CLUELESS! Have taken several of your courses, and this old man is now doing a club (special events/occasions), private events/parties, and charity fundraisers (1k+ attending).

@@digitaldjtips Phil, as a hobby I started with Djay Algoriddam on my Iphone and Ipad and even bought your "how to Dj on ipad and iphone tips e-book" ( I think it was $4.99 like 8 years ago) . Then moved on (still as hobbie ) to controller and laptop..... but still love my phone app... feels like fun everytime I do it as.. i can do bluetooth to a main speaker and it links to all other speakers... ok mixing is on the fly but fun galore to be anywhere in the party to mix..... of course the DJ-200 can be connected if you want to make sure to mix properly....

In the techno scene. I used saw quite lots of small controllers like NI Z1, X1, F1 or Xone K1/K2 being used. This was way before I finally decided to learn how to DJ myself when Covid started. Now I have grown to love the Xone K2. When I'm at home, I can use it as a supplemental controller beside the DDJ-400 in RekordBox (brilliant way to control all the FX1 and FX2 and sampler parameters). But I can also just as easy run it with only the laptop, K2 and my Minirig and go outside play some tunes while travelling relatively light.
Then there are also Ableton Live "DJ's" out there.

I wish I had found this video a few years ago when I was trying to decide what my set up would be - but thats half the fun too! With all of the research I did, I came to the same conclusion.... Controller and laptop every day. I do like Vinyl however and the conroller that I have (Mixars Primo) allows two phono inputs so you can play regular records or play around with the control vinyl either... if you already have decks, make sure your controller will take them... well worth it. Thanks Phil... you featured in my research too :D

    6th option for the win.
I use to do this when Ableton became a thing. Cheap firewire interface, 10+ channels of tracks, effects, drum loops, basslines, sends, samples. And to make it all legit looking, I would bring a few weird ass vynils to spin here and there, use a a 25keys midi controller mapped to random things and a hardware gaget or two ( gameboy, arkaos, whatever).
How to go back to the archaic hardware DJ setup after tasting that much possibilities.
The only problem is that a setup like that keeps you really busy so you better bring a hypeman, have a crowd with more ears than eyes and maybe have some visuals going.
I came back to it in the last year playing a couple parties and all I used was a live mixer/controller and a laptop.

    8. The eighth way is Dj'ing with Ableton. When CDs phased out, I decided to switch my mindset and use Ableton only, without decks or a mixer in the middle. i'm not sure if it was the smartest move, as challenging and daunting as it was, but it forced me to think different about how to mix. Creativity was the advantage, but the disadvantage was losing the hands on feel and control of the ones and twos. However, I did recently buy a controller to marry it all together.

Started with vinyl, switched to CD's when pioneer released their CDJ range. After that I switched to a computer, first with DVS and after a few years a controller. But after a few years I got really bored with playing digital. You don't have to put out any effort to mix records. I even tried DJ'ing with Traktor and Ableton connected but everything is so perfect it just bores me. Plus music on beatport is so cheap in comparison to vinyl that you just start buying too much music. I started to lose the fire inside of me... So I switched back to vinyl. It made me a better selector. Vinyl isn't cheap so you buy only what you like. You have to work every mix to get it right. I just love it. On gigs I don't always play on vinyl. Sometimes it's a stick and Pioneer CDJ's.

I have tried using a phone but hate it and I don't like just using a computer. I got a Hurcules impulse 200. It is tiny and trying to manually beat match is nearly impossible but it is a good start point. My computer was £50 including lcd monitor and controller was £100 and I got a 100w Panasonic hifi system secondhand for £20. That is £170 and I use Mixxx software which is free. I previously had 2 x numark turntables with a Citronic Pro 2 mixer and that ended up being about £250 about 5 years ago all second hand.

I remember I did a rave party in NYC and my mixer was Gemini626 if you remember I rocked it , and had some people ask after what mixer you got and they were surprised that it was a Gemini. so the point is if you know what you doing you can rock the party even with a Gemini.

Two Turntables and a mixer with vinyl is the truth, DVS is the closest to the truth, and battle dj's represent the truth better than any one in the industry. Controllers are toys, and are ruining the artform. The Digital era has stolen the learning curve right out of it period, thats why there are 10 million "dj"s out there now who have skipped the whole learning process, dj'ing soley with thier eyes, throw them in front of a vinyl set-up and they are lost. People need to learn how to walk before they can run. Proper dj'ing that separates the real ones from the wannabe's is what makes dj'ing a true instrument with a learning curve the same as learning a traditional instrument like a guitar, specially so battle dj'ing. Now the artform is oversaturated and watered down from the digital era. The least we can do to keep it real is use a DVS set-up, gives you best of both worlds, and keeps the "art" in the form. Fuck controllers and cdj's, both have diluted our artform that alot of us have cut our teeth on, now any tom dick and harry can spend a month on a controller/cdj and call themselves a dj....

This is a bitter truth , now every other person with a dj controller and a laptop or a mobile phone with a smartwatch on the street is a Dj with a USB stick in his or her pocket . Now DJing is done with sound effects loops and preset cue points and even the new age commercial music has changed the way people used to dance ,now people wave with their finger and that's what they call dancing

Gee TK we’ve been here before, the argument is tired. As a DJ with 45 years experience, it would be too easy to slip in beside you and support the past but the truth is technology moves forward and why shouldn’t we use it to enhance our performance. The truth is that controllers (which aren’t toys) along with all the rest Phil mentions, are just tools, having a hammer doesn’t make one a carpenter. In my office, I no longer use calculators, I use spreadsheets and calculator apps on my pc. In my DJ work I use vinyl, DVS, laptops, controllers and standalone. My favourite is the Denon standalone P2 simply for the convenience. I still have 2000 vinyl records but being a vinyl DJ doesn’t make me any better than someone doing it a different way. Core skills are knowing your music, reading a crowd and putting the right music on at the right time, mixing and everything else is extra. Sure your preferred way of working is DVS and vinyl but that’s personal to you and doesn’t make you a ‘real’ DJ and someone with a controller not. Even with all the tech, most DJs will want to progress and learn all the skills including beat matching by ear etc. Let’s cut the elitist rubbish and embrace all who DJ with whatever tools they want to use.

I'm old. Two turntables. DVS is fine. But interestingly, I dj hip-hop back in the day and these days I don't come across many actually proficient and high quality hip-hop dj's that can't use at best two turntables with timecoded records. I mean they can use the vinyl or time coded stuff. The controller only hip-hop guys generally seem to have suspect mixes. I'm guessing part of it is just they lack the experience hearing great mixing so they settle for crap.

Hi Phil, It still baffles me why PioneerDJ doesn't integrate Rekordbox DJ Software with their Pro DJ Link hardware. Imagine if RBDJ could sync Beat Grid info straight from the RBDJ Software direct to the built-in powerful effects that live in the DJM Mixer? Merging both of Pioneer's DJ platforms would only strengthen and increase their market share of DVS/DJ Software, without damaging their hold on their industry standard top end gear. All Clubs and Festivals would still continue to use Pioneer's flagship standalone tech, while at the same time making the Rekordbox DJ software platform way more exciting! How many Serato DJ's use a Pioneer DJM Mixer? Answer... Loads! Now tell them RBDJ software sends beat grid info to their Pioneer DJM Mixer's FX... and overnight watch a huge shift over to PioneerDJ
