Excited for this: thanks! Just a tip: it's a good idea to mention the tuning at the start. I think this one is "drop-D" with everything 1/2 step down? so, effectively, drop-C# ?

5150 is my favorite of the Hagar era, such a bright sound (major D--good mood vibe) and the drums are the best of any era. Great lesson! Very faithful to the original.

Love your breakdowns! They help me get better … no one can play Eddie like Eddie! We just do our best to get close… and if you’re “good enough” to get close. Your already forming your own style 🙏💯👍

I've always held Eddie's efforts (or maybe lack of) on a pedestal, sacred and unachievable. But now that the magic is gone it's time! I consider your channel the best teachings, layed back and easy to follow. Thanks a million Marty.✌💪🎸

It's my favorite song from the album that introduced me to Van Halen when I was 10... A gift from my mother who knows nothing about music... The intro is already the only part of the song I know how to play but you make me want to learn the rest. Thank you Marty! Let's pull on the D-Tuna :-)

This is actually Sammy’s favorite Van Halen song. It’s up there on my list too. Underrated. Another underrated song, Top Jimmy. These songs feature Ed’s amazing rhythm guitar chops. His solos are legend. His rhythm is a well kept secret among musicians that appreciate his artistry and the complete player he truly was. When anyone puts him outside the top 3 all time I know their ear is underdeveloped.

You’re right dude it is….it’s in drop D then the low E is tuned down a further whole step to C# (either just flick the EVH D-Tuna, if you have one, or just just tune down on the peg and gives you that really low end cha cha chug during the verse) so, from low to high your guitar will be C#, G#, C#, F#, A# and D#….least that’s the way I learned it.

Bad ass lesson!!!!! I first learned this in high school in the late 80s but the tab I got out of a book at the time had you starting on the d 1st 2nd 3rd string, making the jump to the next passage super hard to make clean. And it was just dumb tab. I decided to relearn this again the other day and found this. Great video!

Everybody wants to talk about the tapping & the insane leads EVH left for us all to enjoy on many albums & live DVD's. But to me it's the rhythm riffs like this, that separate him from everybody else. The 80's were filled with guys who could keep up with Eddie's leads (even if he paved the way). But NOBODY in rock/hard rock creates these kind of riffs. Never have. Never will.

He very well may drop it down to D. Some guitars may be standard as well. It's so low and gritty !

@@Ranch5150SkinWalker totally. The low string sounds like D when he’s chugging it. Like on Live Without A Net. Such a killer tune. My fav Sammy era track. The Live without a net version is on point. Thank you for doing a lesson on it. You rock!

Just watched your Dance the Night Away video and it’s pretty wrong. Now I decide to give another chance and you immediately played this wrong from the very beginning. I mean there’s 1000s of hours of video and recordings of Eddie playing. Did you watch any of that? I’m honestly not trying to be a dick but. Anyone who plays the song this way is playing it wrong and will NEVER understand Eddies playing or process. Honestly this isn’t even close to how it’s played. 2 strikes so far. Ya know what. I’m not going to leave a comment if I watch another video and it’s wrong too.

@@flippercarlin1657 Coincidence. I hung out at Zekes house in the early 2000s. He’s a great guy. I played some of the 5150 guitars. Great memories
