True story. Saw these guys in 1980 something at Folsom Field Boulder Colorado. The "Electric" Church's bass caught on fire. I was 3 sheets to the wind amd on Rocky Mountain high. Dont take my word for it, but it was what Sammy announced

One of the most underrated songs of the Van Hagar era.
And I dare to say that it's also the best one from that era. It's just PERFECT. Amazing rhythm work by Eddie with some of his best riffs, of course the solo is out of this world too. And talkin about rhythm Alex is on fire, and live versions always sound twice as good. In this video you can hear Mike's simple yet powerful bass line, and damn he never loses a beat, even while singing harmonies. Sammy was on fire on the whole 5150 record, and was an amazing showman who filled Dave's shoes with no problems. I prefere the Live without a Net version, but this is pure gold too

Exactly right! They play like a bunch of guys playing for their friends and having the time of their lives! I’m so blessed to have experienced them live over the years.
I’ll argue this to my grave, this right here was the pinnacle of Van Halen. Sammy brought so much to the band, amazing vocals, and everyone genuinely enjoyed what they were doing. This band will NEVER be replicated, I’m eternally grateful that I got to experience the entire Van Hagar era in all of its magnificent glory!!

Musically I don’t think there is a better Van Halen song from any era or decade than this one.

It's long overdue to give the Sammy era a deluxe reissue, there's obviously some fantastic live recordings that could go with it. I'm sure it's up to Alex at this point but maybe it's too late. Man I loved the 5150 era

Eddie Alex and Michael and Sammy were absolutely hands-down in their prime during this time. You could tell they enjoyed what they were doing, and he couldn’t wipe that smile off his face during the whole show. I love this era of rock ‘n’ roll music. Best times of all. Rock ‘n’ roll comes and goes, but it will never die…

Your Unboxed album will always bring me the best memories. I was a lucky kid and got a 1987 Conquest TSI sports car when I was in high school (1995). I drove around listening to Unboxed on cassette tape!
My dad got me into Van Halen with the 5150 album in the mid-80's. He also had Unboxed, which made me really appreciate Sammy even more. I love the Van Halen album "Live: Right Here, Right Now" with Sammy playing Give to Live. Love that song! I heard he did Eagle's Fly on other nights. Wish I could've seen that!

It is usually over dubbed vocally. Ed is in standard 440 tuning here so Sammy has to work hard to keep in key. This version is 100% live. 5150 is a masterpiece in writing a perfect(no such thing really in Rock and Roll) song. Ed has had so much impact on me as a guitarist, it is crazy.

Great video drop! In doing some comparisons today, this upload looks MUCH CLEANER than previous uploads of this concert. Also, this version has Sammy missing a few high notes compared to previous versions ( which is totally okay-it's LIVE and raw, like it should be ). Finally, Edward's guitar sound has way more " meat " to it in the mix. And, Mike's bass is more prominent as well ( especially during Ed's solo ). Makes me wonder just what is hiding in Sam's/Mike's/ Van Halen's vaults ( haha )!
I think the dude at the board could have raised Sammy's vocals - a tad to low (for me).

5150 is possibly my favorite VH song, and it is so powerful live. Sadly, I never saw it performed myself in person.

100% agree. I love everything from Van Halen, but this song is one of those I never get tired of, and in my top 5 for sure
This one has the better guitar solo, the other one’s ok, just ok by Eddie standards, but this one makes the hairs on the back of the head stand on end, he’s really toying with the beat here, totally unpredictable, syncopated angular phrases into long flowing legato passages, fuck it’s so good.
Hammer-ons, Pull-offs, and tapping. Sometimes Eddie plays guitar using telepathy too. Eddie is a genius, a smiling genius. Yes, he is a genius. He is still with is with his music.

Saw em 5 times with Roth and 3 with Sam, bottom line I was very blessed to witness it live. Say what you want about Sammy, he sang all the lyrics to each song, not like Roth, Roth could maybe complete one song live if that; Roth was a great entertainer and gymnastic karate kick showman, circus atmosphere type of guy. Sammy was the *singer live. Don't get me wrong Roth was hall of fame on the albums but live, he was very disappointing when it came to singing his part. Peace

Loved every minute of that concert!! I was a senior in HS. Went to every VH tour since Sammy joined. Just saw Sammy and the Circle at The FL Strawberry Festival ( Mike knocked it out of the park with Ain’t Talkin Bout Love….Still rockin’. 36 years after reinventing VH!! A true testament to the longevity and relevance of a Great Frontman that shares the stage with his band mates and the audience. Hope to see you at your birthday bash!!

IMO this is the best written VH song with Sammy, followed by Humans Being. It works perfectly because the range of talents in that lineup and musically, it is just a complete journey. Lyrically, everyone can relate to dealing with someone who always wants to take a little more than they give. Tone-wise, it is a time capsule of the hardest rocking band on the planet of that time.
It is making me want to list my favorites, in song-writing, from each era, just to see if any other commenters want to join in.

My God, man. I remember this coming out when I was in college. It was one of the first CDs I ever bought when I got a CD player. And, it was a CD I kept in my car when I got my 1st sports car with a CD player. Friggin top notch rock music to cruise down the interstates, not to mention have at parties, jam solo air guitar at home by yourself, or about any other occasion that calls for the best rock. I remember in 1990 going to a record store in Staten Island and buying a bootleg VHS copy of the Japanese TV broadcast of the entire concert, complete with commercials. Watched it over and over. Amazing performance.
