In the last part when you stopped and explained the building of intensitiy and the kick ass drums. In the original version Marco supported Tarja in singing and Floor creates the effect of building and building on her own. And this makes exectly this moment so exceptional.

The final minute is like a tsunami, hurricane and a thunderstorm combined washing over you in an epic sonic wave.

One of the very few reaction channels that actually pays attention to the music and notices among other things what the drummers and bassists do. Most other ones just seem focused on the vocals and most of the rest gets past them.

This was the first Nightwish song i ever heard. Century Child had just been released, i was a 13yr old listenening to regular pop music like anyone else 'normal' my age. Thank you Nightwish for making me discover the world of metal
This could easily be one of Nightwish's best concerts. Each song in itself is worthwhile reacting to. BTW, you did Romanticide, Song of myself and Storytime from this same concert. Love the detail and depth of your analyses.

I'll just say this about floor: Most vocalists, me included, sing what we can. Floor, she sings what she wants.
Nightwish can do a "normal" metal song. An then take it to the next level. An make it epic. That's why they sell out wherever they go.
Tuomas could write the phone book. An find a way to make it sound epic.
As far as listening to Tarja. My heart has to say. Phantom of the Opera. That's the song that introduced me to NIGHTWISH in 04. Been a fan ever since.
The song that got me hooked into nightwish with Tarja was Wish I Had An Angel, I would check out the album version. I prefer the album over her live performance, but that's my personal preference. Floor naturally does a killer job when she does wish I had an angel as well, but I get why you'd want to check out the other singers as well.

Phantom of the Opera with Tarja is an absolute must. It is really fantastic.
The success of Ever Dream is to express pop sensibilities with the tools of metal: the sweet-but-plaintive guitar solo (which IIRC Emppu said is the one he's proudest of), the double kick drum to emphasize/glorify the final key-changed repeat of the chorus.
This is the song that got my mom into metal. Now she listens to Volbeat while gardening.
Should have said "Ghost River" Wacken 2013. Point of interest, At the Wacken concert you can tell if the songs are early or late in the set as Floor changes from trousers to skirt for the second half.

Absolutely with Tarja, Phantom of the Opera will of course will be asked by many, the Siren (which is actually one of Marco's favorites), the kinslayer, wishmaster. Oldies goldies ❤️ but when you get to Anette one day, I'm sure people will ask for bye bye beautiful but actual masterpiece from Tuomas.. is a longer piece called meadows of heaven with Anette singing. There is no good live versions of it so you would actually have to listen the album version, it is such a crime it's not reacted to more often! It is absolutely one of my all time favorites and since they rarely play it live, people forget about it.
Oh and how I didn't say beauty of the beast with tarja (album version), it's longer one from the early days.. And also underrated, it should get more appreciation!
They all just do enough to do the best sound possible!

This is one of Nightwish's earlier hit songs. Those ending chorus's are just breathtakingly powerful. For the most part a straight forward commercially oriented song with a great song structure. If you are interested you should listen to Tarja perform this song (original singer) to see how Floor has modified it to make it her own and also in my opinion make it much more impactful. I love Tarja's version, but Floor adds a heavier belting quality to everything she does from the older songs. Great job once again Chase! Love your attention to the musical nuances.

Empuu switched from Washburn CS-780 when the model was discontinued in 2000 to ESP mainly because he got a sponsorship. Both before and after sounded exactly the same - completely awesome. White guitars are tuned in standard EADGBE, velvet ones - a drop of a tone DGCFAD. Plus he has like 50 pedals for all kinds of effects, that part is his private secret of his signature sound. Unlike Alexi Laiho who had on/off switch on his signature ESP and gain to the max on the amplifier, so simple yet his sound was still magical.
I still keep my own CS-780, the most elegant curves I've ever encountered. Ofc all customized with EMG's and original Floyd Rose 8)

For Tarja, as others have said "phantom of the opera" from end of an era, and for me personally actually Ever Dream from the same show. They perform it a tad differently than they do here with Marko doing more harmonization during the last section of chorus. Get goosebumps just thinking about it.
This popped up on my feed today, and I figured that yes, I do need some Chase and Nightwish in my Thursday. I can't believe it's almost been a year since you started down the rabbit hole :)
I think it's absolutely mindblowing, the things you hear and pick up listening to a song for the first time. I doubt there are many others that will be able to pick up the same details even after hearing it for a couple of times. And it's been said before but I will say it again, I don't think there is another reactor (is that a right word? Excuse my english, I'm Dutch) that brings the amount of depth and insight to a reaction-vid than you, Sir. Now I have a whole new approach to my journey. Every time I hear a song that I like (mostly Nightwish) I first listen to the "original" song, and then I go straight to your channel and see if I can find a reaction vid from you of that same song. And that takes listening to it to a whole new level. And then, Floor hitting those high notes and listening to you making it even better, FloorCHASm once again!

Omg finally someone noticed and appreciated double kick in the last two choruses. In my opinion it's the best part of the song perfectly culminating the build up through the whole piece.

Around 7:30 into the reaction you mention "the master lego-builder of music", construction and deconstruction of the song/music. That actually is what Floor does as well with her singing, BTW, and she always has, which is probably why she fits so well in the band.
No idea if anybody mentioned this, couldn't find anything on it in the comments yet, but Floor is a self-confessed vocal tech-nerd and perfectionist with perfect control of her instrument and breathing, who not only knows how to use her voice as a multi-faceted instrument without doing damage to it, be it singing, belting, growling, cries, sliding or whatever, but she also knows how to creating emotion with her voice, and knows how to place parts precisely where they need to be, and also knows what the duration, trail-off etc. should be. This is why she could basically sing anything, but because of the many aspects of metal compared to other styles of music, prefers to sing metal.
In case no one else mentioned it yet: at the age of 16 she started with her first band, which later became After Forever. After secondary school, she went on to study at the Rock Academy (3 yr study), followed by another 3-year study, musical theatre and classical singing. She also was a vocal teacher, until professional singing took away too much time and she could no longer continu with the teaching.
She plays a few instruments too, flute, guitar and piano.
If you'd like to study or react to different aspects of her voice, please do look at all of the songs she performed at Beste Zangers 2019 (TV show from the Netherlands), in the order that she performed them. It really shows how grat and versatile she really is.

Personally, I discovered Floor by accident, as a suggestion from UA-cam, and thereafter the ball started rolling and never stopped. I just can't get enough of Nightwish and Floor Jansen :). It is truly world class music, nah, beyond world class .... :)

My two favorites with Tarja would be "Bless the Child" (still my favorite Nightwish song) and "Planet Hell". "The Siren" would be a close third.

Your attention to detail, and the way you explain what you’re hearing in the songs structure, is exceptionally good.
The Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, from their show in Rio, is another excellent example of Marco and Floor playing off each other.
A few Floor specific suggestions, would be from her appearance on Beste Zangers. Her ability to taking a song, making it her own and staying true to the feel of the original, is impressive.

Thank you for doing this one...it is a really old song and one that is very dear to me. I had it as the song playing for my graduation at school 17 years ago and one of the old songs that work really well with Floor, without taking anything away from what Tarja was able to do with the same song all those years ago.

For example: at 2:20 that smile and quick look at the cam, I am like.... what?!? What did I miss? It's a clue that you already heard "something". No idea what, but you know it will be coming right at the next "damn good pause" ;)
And then a few minutes later you explain the change in Tuomas' play (chord) and I am like, no way! You are able to pick that up from just listening to that once? Again, absolutely mindblowing. Also probably because I know shit about all the technical stuff, I just enjoy listening, but still..... these are the things that make everything just a little bit better. Not because it suddenly sounds different (still sounds the same of course) but because you appreciate the time and effort put into a song more.
Maybe something with more Troy? How about I Want My Tears Back for the traditional Celtic instruments he uses, Dead Boy's Poem for guitar, or the Planet Rock acoustic session where he and Floor do How's The Heart? Or all three? :)

Once again it's the look of sheer delight on your face that's worth the price of admission, let alone the analysis. And yes Ghost river and Dead boys poem please.
It's a shame that only the vocal soloists are praised here, although the real star is the keyboard soloist Tuomas Holopainen, who has composed almost all of the band's songs. He is a phenomenal composer and the rich sound world he uses in his compositions is incredible. Tuomas (whose name spelling seems to be an overwhelming task for many) definitely deserves more attention and praise!
Watch the Imaginaerum movie, the concept started with the álbum Imaginaerum having a video for all the songs in the album telling a story, but then they said "why dont we make a movie?" And turned it into a indi fantasy movie...the abum is beautiful and magic, (you should react to Last Ride of the Day live in Wacken 2013 too) but the movie tells a beautiful (and a bit dark) story, and when you hear the songs come in you understand the meaning or purpose, and the band does play a role in the movie but they managed to do it subtle so its not like forced or weird...is an awesome movie ❤
While Annette was not universally liked she really did a great job in the studio on this album.
@@allenjohnstone9945 yeah she sounds awesome on this one, this album has songs that were written for her and her range, where as a lot of the previous songs were not written for her...that affected a lot on how people perceived her as not talented or didnt like her, to me she is a very strong and talented singer and LOVE her era, I think is my favorite one hehe, but her singing style was very different to what she was performing on stage sometimes...
I love this film a lot. And the score album is great as well.

Chase.. My boy.. I know this is a few month old reaction. And no it's not my first time tuning in lol I probably watched this reaction for the third time because I love your reactions. Any ways, I know you said you wanted to react to some of the other vocalists contributions and well I love Tarja and Annette for what they can do... And I noticed you have not listened to too many Annette songs so I was thinking you should do (although I doubt youd find a live version, but her album versions were her strong points) Anette Olson with Nightwish - Meadows of Heaven... It is one of the few songs that I honestly believe that Floor would have a hard time covering.
