As a university trained composer and 30 year rock band veteran, I'm gonna say this dude is the most insightful reactor I've seen on the platform. He straight deduced that Tuomas was the composer by analyzing the way the piece is structured organically to support the keyboard part. Props.
I could not agree more! Also like how youre not afraid to talk over without pausing so that you dont miss the flow of the song. I know that the music isnt cutting back in your ears so youre not affecting how you hear it. People dont watch reaction videoa without already having a love for the song. Just enjoying how it feels to see somebody else experiencing new to them bands. Earned my subscription!😎👌🤘🤘
i think it's the first time i see someone realizing Tuomas 's "influence" on Nightwish without knowing who he actually is and just by musical details... niiiice!
Right? It's amazing. I find it incredibly sad how few people know Toumas is the real mastermind. I still wish people would react to Tarja instead of Floor. It's so sad. I still think Tarja does it better. Floors high note at the end just isn't enough for me.
You broke this down better than most music teachers. It's kind of hilarious. It was amazing to hear the break down. Not enough go into that. Thank you. Absolutely loved your reaction.
@@ChaseCarneson I agree with Megan Grant. Really enjoyed your knowledge base musically as you determined things the band would do in advance. Just subscribed and will look forward to more of your Nghtwish reaction videos. Cheers.
Yeah, the "music teachers", "vocal coaches", "recording artists", etc... Don't believe everything they tell you. Too many reactors try to give their channel more weight by giving themselves a certain title.
@@ChaseCarneson If you like fascinating song-writing *"7 Days to the Wolves" (Wembley 2015)* is one I really like as a classically trained musician. It's one of the more underrated songs and my personal favorite. I feel like it suits the energy of the weird time we're living in right now. I enjoyed your breakdown of this song as well and I selfishly want to hear your opinion on this one. 😄
@@renskevanderhaagen5813 I know first hand how difficult playing live can be, particularly when you're a really "Active" band. I can only imagine how much more intense this is for them. Got some more Nightwish planned for this weekend so stay posted 🤘
Chase Carneson I will, I subbed ;) so it will show up in my feed. I saw Floor live in her solo theater show, she just has the most amazing voice. But also so does Marko (the bassist, sings on many songs also) and Troy (not in this video). And tuomas is just a genius, as mentioned by others, the poetry / lyrics of most songs are amazing and meaningful and so are the compositions, it baffles me that he writes complete classical masterpieces and metal riffs and some opera.... all together with the lyrics (most songs are really worth digging in the meaning of it!) its just amazing. (Sounding all fangirl here, sorry 🤭) hope you will do Romanticide, storytime and 7 days to the wolves soon! Have a great day
Floor is slightly taller than dutch MEN in general, so she is extraordinary. Bass player Marco is 1,80cm, so pretty much finnish average on males, and Floor tops that with 3 centimeters. No need for heels, but then again, if she chooses to wear them, 2 meters can be reached easily ^^
now the nightwish army will raid you. FLOOR is the best vocalist of her generation she can sing anything, along with the best composer of his generation (tuomas) the result is majestic.
"The best" is a big word. I would ad "in my opinion" to it. When it comes to composing there are a lot of very talented people out there. For me (I'm a big Tool-Fan also) the guys from Tool are def. on another level when it comes to create strange rhythms that work if you put them together.
I guess I listen enough to NW to be a conscript of "The Army". Lol! I loved this guys breakdown and insights. Hope he keeps reviewing more NW songs. Subscribed.
@@ingobordewick6480 Maynard is good at putting a song together, sure, and his rhythm and all that is on point, but his otherwise vocal skill is NOWHERE NEAR Floor's.
@@ChaseCarneson he's Tuomas Holopainen, founder, leader, composer, lyricist, arranger, and producer of 95% of the band's music...he's been called the metal Mozart
@@ChaseCarneson The fact that you figured that out in the middle of watching this for the first time was, for me (a non-musically-trained hooman), very very impressive. It gave that much more weight to the rest of your commentary throughout (which I thought was great). Like Jon Snow, I know nothing. Just another Nightwish army conscript, but seeing your breakdown opened my eyes even though I've been listening for ~20 years or so. Thank you. Great job, sir.
@@ChaseCarneson Yeah. Your remark about Tuomas for a first time... It's crazy. You were of course right. And you are the first guy saying that after many many reactions vids watched...
As a 63 year old man, that has listened to hard rock/ heavy metal since I was an 8 year old kid listening to The Doors, Jimmy Hendrix, Ms Joplin, and then Steppenwolf, Led Zeppelin, Nazareth, Grand Funk Railroad, Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne, the on to Boston, Foreigner, AC/DC, Asia, The Scorpions, Dokken, Motley Crue, Ratt, Judas Priest, and what I consider the best Heavy Metal group, Metallica. Then a few months ago I noticed a lot of the people who were doing reaction video's were reacting to this band I had never heard of...Nightwish. I was amazed at how well their music was written and performed! Floor Jansen is an amazing vocalist.....! I have been listening to them & "Within Temptation" quite a bit, and really enjoy their music. Thanks for all the insight into the music of Nightwish! Oh...the keyboard player writes and composes most of their music. Oh...I am a new Subscriber!
You have listened to quite a few good bands in your live! Yes, Metallica was THE band of my youth. Metallica and a couple of German bands were almost everything I listened to. Nowadays, I mostly listen to Sabaton, Nightwish and Serenity and still one of the German bands I listened to when I was still only 12 or 13 years old. (Die Ärzte, in case you know them and understand the German language^^) They aren't the only bands I listen to, mind you! I listen to other things as well, but those are the bands I focus the most on...
This was an absurdly intelligent analysis and your delivery was so professional. Being able to decipher that the dude on keys has a HUGE role in the band's success was amazing for you to mention. And everytime I watch this live performance, there are like three different moments where I'm sure the Black Pearl is about to explode from the backdrop of the stage.
Please sir, you didn't waffle (woffle?) on enough. I'm honestly very impressed with your observations. Easily the most perceptive and educational reaction I've ever seen to this performance, and I've watched way too many reactions videos on this. More please.
This is incredible kind. Thank you for the support. Hoping my music background gives me a little bit of a different view on things and couldn't be happier to share it with you all. More Nightwish coming soon!!!
@@ChaseCarneson I mean there are a lot of reactions by musicians, vocal coaches and producers on this band. But what you usually get is commentary on some small portion of the whole thing, or "I like that, that's cool", but you actually gave a really good overall picture of the whole thing on first reaction, which I found impressive and educational, since even having listened to this song for decades, I couldn't put it into words nearly as well as you did. Also I've never heard anyone really comment on the compositions itself, which to me, is what makes this whole thing work. Everyone watching these reactions knows the band is tight. They're professional musicians and have all been doing this for their whole life, so you know, they're pretty damn good. But so are many other bands. Talking about the just fantastic vocals, or just the nice riffs and drum fills doesn't really do justice to what makes this band great. It's the whole package of songwriting, skill, teamplay and showmanship that really makes this thing called Nightwish. So yeah, can't wait to see what you think of the rest. The thing is I love this band, but I really can't put my finger on where the magic happens, since they're also really varied in style and I don't have the skill and training to even try. So yeah, appreciated this a lot.
I totally agree. I could've done with a lot more waffling on and probably could've listened to that extra hour of breakdown even though I couldn't tell you the first thing about music. Excellent breakdown. I'm a sucker for watching peoples' first impressions (esp. Ghost Love Story), but I don't subscribe to them. Chase's though- wow. As Darth Vader would say, "Impressive!" /Hitting that bell right now

"Fantastic musicians doing something that is new to me but doing it really well" is the genesis of "Nightwish doing Nightwish things." When I first heard Floor, I thought, "That's pretty. That's different." Ten seconds later with the first, soaring "My fall..." I was instantly spellbound and captivated and have been ever since. Nightwish became my favorite band at that moment. I am an amputee in a wheelchair and I took a bus from Detroit to Chicago to see them last year, by myself. Floor and Nightwish bring beauty and joy into my sometimes sad life and that is what art is for. Thanks for the additional insight, as always, Chase. Have a damn good day!
She's awesome. And she sings that well every day, not every week. She is like many others have said one of the greatest singers of this generation. Hell, she even growls.
"The guy on the keys seems to have a lot of influence on the band" - Tuomas is the songwriter and lyricist for 95% of their work. He's the genius behind the band.
@@ChaseCarneson The whole band is crazy good though. Even the ones the light doesn't shine as brightly on, like Emppu and Marco. They're great at what they do, and do what they have to without drawing limelight.
I really learned a lot from your break down. I have seen this video reacted to hundreds of times and I still learned something today. Thank you very much and I hope you will take the Nightwish journey. I see Gabriel gave you the basic info. He is a nice guy. And he is very helpful. Take care and stay safe. :-)
@@tasminoben686 Thank you Tasmino Ben! It is nice to hear from you too. What do you think of the new album? I really like it. Take care and stay safe............ :-)
Remember those Nightwish T Shirts you used to see at events.....They are headed your way now. Reaction requests should be about 50 the first day for the band and about 10 for Floor in other venues and acoustics. Your subscriptions will sky rocket after this reaction. Chase...The Nightwish Army has arrived ! BTW you have had your first of many Floorgsms. Great Reaction, you know your stuff. ENJOY the ride.
Yeah, the army is inbound, prepare to be invaded. ... also beware that many Nightwish fans are total music geeks and will bore you to death with high end musical dissections and terminology. (ouch, that was painfully self-aware)
You just summoned the Nightwish Army!) Thank you for sharing your reaction and welcome to the world of Symphonic Metal! Floorgasm achieved!) Well, you've just witnessed Her Majesty Northern Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen, she is Dutch). Floor has classical background, rock academy behind, and used to be a vocal coach for a number of years. Floor is the most versatile and powerful female singer today and can sing anything from more pop-y style, classic opera, to metal screams and growls. Floor sings emotions, not words. And yes, she is tall -- 6'1 + heels) Floor joined Nightwish in the middle of their Imaginaerum world tour in late 2012 (which includes this show). Previous singer, Anette Olzon (she's currently in Dark Element) left the band while they were touring, and there was no certainty what to do with all the upcoming shows. They called Floor (her previous band did tour with NW in the past, and they knew each other). Floor flew immediately to help them out and temporarily replace Anette for the rest of the world tour. She arrived two days before the next show, and she had only 48 hours to learn the entire setlist. And she did. There is official documentary about all that -- "PLEASE LEARN THE SETLIST IN 48 HOURS" ( ua-cam.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/v-deo.html ) For Floor it was first really big gig with Nightwish, 82K people, at the time she was only for a few months with the band. After the world tour, they made Floor their official member. This song was performed at the end of 90min show, at the 1hr 10min mark. Nightwish formed in '96 in Finland, initially with Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen as a vocalist. She left the band in 2005, and Anette Olzon stepped in, until 2012. The bassist with a cool beard is Marco, and he sings some parts too. He has his own solo project outside the Nightwish. The mastermind behind 99% of lyrics and music is a keyboardist Tuomas -- you were right!) Guitarist name is Emppu, and the drummer in this show is Jukka (Yukka), but later he was replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues. Flutes/uilleann pipes/guitar/vocals - Troy, he did not perform in this song. Nightwish is better live, always, so if live performance is available, go for it. In their performances, they often using recorded backtrack of a classical orchestra for their songs. They have very diverse music, from more light songs to epic scores like this, and to really heavy metal stuff, don't think that all their music is alike -- it's opposite of it) For the next step, I can suggest listening to: - Storytime from the same Wacken 2013 live - for move heavy: Ghost River, Song Of Myself, both from Wacken 2013 also - If you want to explore more Floor versatility, check out her performances on a TV show Beste Zangers in 2019. You just starting your journey with Nightwish, and be prepared to be surprised (and sometimes shocked) time and time again! Their music is very emotional and diverse. Btw, Nightwish released their new album on April 10th (Human. :||: Nature.). Greetings from Moscow and stay safe! ;) Looking forward to seeing more NW on your channel!
You are really a master in desecting a music piece. I've seen many many many reaction video's of professional vocal coaches and guitar teachers viewing this epic piece of Nightwish but you hear everything whats going on music arrangement on the first time. And enjoyed it without over acting. Bravo!
Great reaction.Funny you should mention the keyboard player. His name is Tuomas and he is the main songwriter of the band. He writes most of the lyrics and the music(95% or so ). He is brilliant.
That was the best analysis of the music structure I have ever heard. Especially on the fly as you listened to it for the first time. I've listened to Nightwish for a long time, but now I know technically why their music intrigues me. Thanks for you reaction. Subscription and a like here.
Loaded dog Actually Floor had been with Nightwish allready 10 months when Wacken took place. Floor came aboard in the beginning of October 2012 and Wacken was in August 2013. At that point Floor was (as was Troy) allready a permanent member of Nightwish too. Tuomas and the boys had asked her earlier in June if she would want to be their vocalist and she had accepted. It was made public later that autumn.
Thx Mantai Luaa ... I am only a new fan but even I can see that with the addition of floor and Troy it seemed to breath new life into the band.... but I do feel so sad for jukka, tho I understand he is still part of the group behind the scenes... he was a beast on the skins....thx again and keep safe ..😎👍🇦🇺
i love that moment after floor nails the big finale and you can see how happy she is. this was her first super visible performance as an official member of nightwish and after how contentious and controversial the switch from tarja to anette was, and how much (undeserved) hate anette got for basically her entire time with the band, you gotta imagine it felt really awesome for floor to know she'd completely won this crowd over.
Those "digital samples" are the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and are entirely scored by Tuomas (seen here in keyboards). So yes, he does have a major influence - he, more than anyone else, IS Nightwish! Floor had not even been confirmed as the permanent lead singer at that stage - she'd been brought in mid-tour 9 months earlier to replace Anette, with whom they had a nearly catastrophic falling out. Floor learned the setlist in 48 hours, having received the call inviting her to stand in for the remainder of the tour during her sister's wedding in the Netherlands and joining them for the Seattle concert 2 days later. Within a few weeks she was commanding stage and audience with her presence, and by this festival booking (so not an entirely Nightwish fan-base) there was one performance remaining in the tour. She is indeed tall at 6'1" - although that is less unusual for a Dutchwoman than it would be for most nationalities. Floor was confirmed as permanent lead singer shortly after this performance. She did not come close to the limit of her range in this - I believe her highest recorded is E6, so this is comfortable for her. You HAVE to see the documentary "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours!
Great reaction. You are quickly becoming one of my favorite reactors. No over dramatics, just good insight and music theory! You may enjoy (not necessarily to react/ review) the documentary video 'PLEASE LEARN THE SETLIST IN 48 HOURS' About how Floor joined Nightwish mid tour and had only 2 days to learn the set list. As a musician I'm sure you can imagine the chaos and pressure on both the band and Floor. It's an interesting watch if you have down time during these strange days of covid.
@@ChaseCarneson The top search result has bad quality, incorrect speed and no subtitles, so if you end up watching it, then this version ua-cam.com/video/117UXfUV1Hs/v-deo.html is the one to watch. It's honestly a pretty cool documentary about keeping a band going. Much better than the one from their earlier days, where they basically just crawl around in mud piss drunk for 1,5 hours.
It has been 4 months since I saw this for the 1st time and met such an amazing analyzer... Every now and then I come back just to enjoy it one more time Best invested Sub ever... Thanks for this Chase
I‘ve seen a lot of reaction videos of that song but this was honestly the most professional one by far! You‘ve noticed so many details and not just focused on the obvious things. Heading right to your reaction on „the poet and the pendulum“ and I‘m sure you‘ll be one of the few who gets the full impact of that song ^^
Great review and welcome to Nightwish, prepare for the NW Army to come :-) As a musician yourself, appreciating great musicians and composers, you have an amazing ride in front of you going through the Nightwish catalogue. I envy you! Tuomas is the keyboard player and he writes the majority of the songs for Nightwish. I would recommend sticking with Wacken before moving on, this concert doesn't have any bad songs, it's quite extraordinary, but if I would suggest it would be Storytime, Romanticide, Ever Dream, Song of Myself and Ghost River, but you could do them all quite frankly, this concert is EPIC!
Been a Nightwish fan since 2008. Came across this video after introducing a drummer friend to Nightwish. I know I'm a couple of years late, but like others have said, the fact that you figured out Tuomas was the composer without even knowing anything about the band is very impressive. I'm not a huge fan of reaction videos, but yours is easily the best one I've seen, hands down. Keep up the great work, sir.
@ChaseCarneson: It's endearing to re-watch your first reaction to Nightwish, several months after you plunged into the rabbit hole. Well done, still love the journey
@@maximilianschultz8244 hobbit that plays guitar very well. He really fits. Goddess, viking, pirate, hobbit, each playing their role so well. Middle-earth man that can play everything. Gives you some vibe of that fantasy-like theme. Really like it. Thats what Nightwish is famous for.
Oeps forgot something... This is just about 10% of what nightwish and floor are capable off 😎😎😎 Everything off this concert is great... And do only live videos.. They are at there best when it's live
I love this band! Most people start with this song as an introduction, it’s not my favorite song. I love their heavier sound. Wacken 13 was an outstanding concert for them. Romanticide, Ghost River, Dark chest of wonders.
You will find that Floor sounds the same, needs no editing. There is a Fan cam of this exact performance. She sounds exactly the same. Enjoy your Nightwish journey. Edit: She is 6'1.
@@ChaseCarneson Going to drop this here. You are going to get a lot of different recommends for this band. Many are going to be from this concert. unfortunately, some of the videos are ripped from the blu-ray version, which had a slight problem with the frames, slowing the performances down some. Here is a link to the correct speed, HD version of this entire concert. 🎼 Nightwish Live at Wacken Open Air 2013 🎶 Correct speed - FullHD - Remastered 🎶 - ua-cam.com/video/cAwtzi7Q3Bk/v-deo.html Do yourself a favor, watch the concert start to finish. It's legendary. You don't have to react to it all at once (although other reactors have, we don't mind, we love watching this concert) or you can react song by song. Either way, you are in for a treat.
Yes. Thank you. I'm glad you're spreading the cam recording. I know many say the Wacken DVD is heavily edited but if it is, it's not "fixing" Floor's vocals so to speak. Might edit her volume a bit and make the overall song sound a bit more clear but Floor is not autotuned or pitch corrected in any way. It's well established by concert goers that Floor sounds amazing live. I don't want people disheartened because they think she's edited to sound good. That's never a good feeling. :(
I`m looking back here on the first reaction on Nitgthwish! .. And I am notice something Chase is saying in the end of the song , something most reactors miss !! .. he says god bless this BAND man!!! .. where 99% of ppl who react says god bless the vocalist...nice catch Chase!!
Chase: First time I saw a drummer have chimes on stage and actually use them. RUSH: We have a little song called Xanadu you might like. (RIP Neil Peart)
I am going back to watch your first Nightwish reaction. I have been listening to your channel since, and have learned to listen with interest now that I know your experience level. Most reactors/commenters seem to actually know so little. You have a very educated and experienced ability to make sound judgements.
Yes!! Finally!! I love it when true musicians react to this band. Like you, I am overwhelmed by the complexities, intricacies and sheer genius of this composition. Phrasing is everything to me, and I was so glad to hear someone touch on that topic. I knew you were a serious musician by your ability to "read" the music during that last part. Choir is building, Floor starts ascending, tension is mounting. Her posture changes and suddenly you know exactly what's about to happen. Some will accuse you of faking it. Bullshit. Many real musicians understand the path this sort of thing takes. My response was just like yours, and, even though I've heard this song hundreds of times, I am still in awe of this masterpiece.
Great reaction my dude! You are absolutely correct in that she is classically trained. She has such a presence and makes it look effortless. The Keyboardist, Tuomas, is responsible for most of the songwriting and lyrics of the band. I'm a bit late to this party and I see you've done some other Nightwish songs, so I'mma go check those out. And don't worry about waffling on when it comes to this band (or any band, really.... It's your channel!). We love hearing people discover the awesome that is Nightwish. Welcome to the club!
Super intelligent analysis! Impressed that you were able to discern what was about to come next. And yes, Toumas is a major influence in the band. He has been described as our Mozart. Enjoy the ride. Recommend Poet and the Pendulum, but first research the backstory.
My favorite moment is that little oboe line right as the interlude is building up. Just a quick little line, and it's kinda in the background, but it's so perfectly placed. It's musical foreshadowing at its best.
This was the best dissection of a Nightwish song ever! I'm sure you've been asked for many more from the army. And I look forward to what you have to say about them. Tuomas, the song writer, is a genius and he has so many more great pieces of art, while also writing incredible pieces that you'd think was a band that lives half way around the world. So much talent in him and the musicians he has assembled!
I just cannot stop listening to your reactions for nightwish over and over again. You are so perceptive and empathetic. Your knowledge is a great guide, helping me understand what makes my feelings for Nightish so deep. Since I started listening to their music, almost 20 years before, I always had this impresion that their music is a 'whole' music. I mean, it doesn't consist only of sadness, romanse, anger, or longing, but all of them at once, and more. It has a whole soul inside, representing complicated human personality with all of the complex feeling going inside on different layers of one's mind.
Congrats on your intro to the Nightwish Experience! I love musician reactions to this band. Prepare for surprises around every corner! All are masters, very versatile & led by the Valkyrie Goddess herself. Romanticide is next. Same show, Wacken 2013. Enjoy! 🔥🤙
It was interesting to watch this "old" reaction again. You have gone a long way with Nightwish from April to today - and I'm sure the journey continues :-)
It's amazing that you've likened the song to an ocean. "Ocean" is a theme used a lot in Nightwish songs, especially in the early days which this song's from.
Chase, feel free to keep on waffling about them all day, you are a remarkable commenter! You see and hear everything and on top of that manage to explain it to us in laymen’s terms. Very, very much appreciated.
I have revisited many of your Nightwish reactions over the last two days, nights mostly. I love them still. But watching this one again, your first Nightwish reaction feels really special. Thanks brother for the many hours of great analysis, great puns, floorgasms, sheer joy and appreciation for this epic band. God bless you!
So wonderful to hear such a beautiful, detailed description of Nightwish with so much musical appreciation ! You're spot on with your ideas about who is the "leader" and head writer in the band. I subscribed because I really like your appreciation for excellent music ! Best wishes from Tennessee USA ❤️. Welcome to the club, the Nightwish Army !
Fellow reactor/musician here, really enjoyed your analysis- I also picked up on Tuomas (keys) when I reacted to this, he's a genius. Great to see another musician doing great analysis, subbed! Keep it going man :)
The dude on the keys is the mastermind of this all...Hello and good evening btw.😎 Good reaction, good analyse enjoyed it much, Thnx for this! 🤘 This is one heck of a song to start it all with, there is more, lots more. This was at Wacken in 2013, the whole concert...pick a song, any song. And you are in for a treat! London 2015 is my 2nd favorite. This band has started in 96 or something 🤔 and Floor Jansen is currently their 3rd lead singer! She started on this journey back in 94-95 +/- where she started in After Forever. There is so much to say about this band and their history. And as stated so many songs 7 Days to the Wolves comes to mind...Romanticide, StoryTime and ofc The Poet and the Pendulum and the Greatest show on Earth those are long and big songs, but awesome! Well Thnx for this, again and till the next ...Have Fun 🖐 Ow oops 😁 almost forgot that sensational feeling you experienced at the end after that Note...is what we call a Floorgasm. 😋 If you continue on this journey expect more to follow... 😎 Just enjoy them 🤪
The "cartoon like" description of spot on. I was thinking the same thing. It takes the serious tone of the sudden dissonant downward melody the guitar just came in with and smooths it over without being too comical.
You did a very good job.... I like it. 👍😎 Floor and all the other famous members of Nightwish gives everyone who understand this kind of music a great time in their life.... congrats to your start into your Nightwish journey - it will be a fantastic one I promise!
She's tall, she's around 6'2". She's an amazing singer, I can't put into words her quality, but this songs speaks for whatever I can describe, since it is a very complex incredibly well developed piece. I'm not shy to tell Beethoven would be composing symphonic metal if he were alive
So after watching like 20 reactions to this very video yours seems like a summary. You caught on everything! I am so impressed with your observations, you even found bits like the keyboarders influence and it seemed to me like you perfectly predicted her going higher and higher in the end there, according to your face and body language! Very nice bits and pieces that will upgrade the song for me in the long run, thank you so much! Subbbed!
You Sir killed the promise i made to myself when i created this youtube account: Never to leave a comment, ever. I lately really enjoy (re-)discovering music through reaction videos. Some of them are great because the joy of someone discovering your favourite band brings back memories of the time when i fell in love with them myself. Some of them are great because absolutely clueless non-musicans like me can learn about the inner workings of the compositions or be amazed when an expert explains why a certain feat a performer just accomplished is such a big deal. In my opinion you easily excel in both aspects. You have described this video as "another masterclass from Nightwish". I think masterclass is a fitting term: Your reactions are like the masterclass for listening to music ;-) I am shocked by the amount of details you can grasp on the first run. And i feel your appreciation for the effort and talent of the musicians more then i can feel it from any other reactor or expert. Luckily for the followers of your masterclass you are also a great teacher because you are able to put your great insight into words that everyone can understand. When you raise your eyebrows ... i ask myself what my ears missed that you just noticed. When you smile ... i am eagerly looking forward to the pause and the lesson. While you discover ... we learn. Thank you! Has the band "Iced Earth" already appeared on your reaction radar? I would love to see you react to them. They introduced me to Heavy Metal (together with Blind Guardian, which i also highly recommend). Someone (unfortunately i cannot remember the source) described Iced Earth as "Lovechild of (Iron) Maiden, (Black) Sabbath and (Judas) Priest meets Thrash Metal". The Band had quite alot of lineup changes. But Jon Schaffer (Rhythm Guitar) always has been the driving force behind Iced Earth. The lineup for the 1999 Live in Athens Concert is widely considered their best. Although the video quality might not always be the best i still think that you as a former touring guitarist will enjoy these versions. Therefore my suggestions would be: - Travel in Stygian - ua-cam.com/video/kL8QGC3GXNs/v-deo.html - Desert Rain - ua-cam.com/video/auVlddyN4zk/v-deo.html - Dantes Inferno (16 Minutes long, but well worth it) - ua-cam.com/video/KKABLbWbUPM/v-deo.html Greetings from Austria and have a damn good day!
Your ocean comparison at the end is actually quite apt; it has always been a frequent theme in the band's music. Their second album is titled "Oceanborn" and Tuomas' lyrics in general just abound with metaphors and references to oceans and seas. "One with the waves, an ocean soul", etc etc.
Glad you enjoyed this. I discovered Nightwish late in life and have seen them live. (And got to meet them as well). They are so very talented and versatile. And yes, Floor is quite a tall lady ( which only adds to her incredible stage presence as you can see) and is in my opinion one of the best female vocalists.
Great reaction to a great song! Most informative and intelligent reaction I have seen for this epic song. Thanx for this refreshing opinion. I love this live version of this song and have listened to it literally 1000 times!
Yes, the keyboardist is the central player in the band, Tuomas. He writes nearly everything they play. As far as the break of the band from Tarja, they released a letter to her from all of the other band members; the letter itself is available on YT. That breakup was heartbreaking for all of them. As far as the next change, check out the video on YT asking Floor to learn the set list in 48 hours. Yes, Floor is tall, 6'1". She's a Valkyrie. She had been in symphonic metal long before she joined Nightwish. You should check out After Forever and ReVamp. She's also done a lot of collaborative work with Arjen Lucassen and Ayreon along with her sister Irene Jansen.
woah, when you really have read on the fly whats coming up next and what Tuomas' part in songwriting is - holy smokes. Never realized it myself, but when you said it I was like "yah, thats exactly it" Thank you very much for this reaction! Subbed.
When ever a reactor gets chills from Floors heavenly voice, I sub. Welcome to the wonderful journey with symphonic metal. Enjoy! Regards from Nightwish fan since 1997 🤘🏼🤘🏼
7:56 Well, I know you already saw How's the Heart acoustic version, you definitely can have them on much smaller stage as well;) On a side note, a lot of people do not pay attention to it the first time and I cannot blame them, but Nightwish have really great lighting and superb use of pyrotechnics, it is as if the visuals were part of the music sheet. The timing of those pyro effects really deserves a shout out.
This was one of the best reviews/reactions to this song: precise and concise. Good job mate. Somebody most probably has answered but she is a 6'1¨ beauty, in all respects. Don't let Hanne read this.
There has been a lot of appreciation of your reaction already, but I have to add that it was an absolute pleasure to hear your opinions of this song and knowledge about music in general. Music has been a very big part of my life since I was a child. Last few years have been quite tough on me and now I'm slowly finding myself again and music is a big part of that process also. I'm myself quite a new member of Nightwish army and it's nice to share these new experiences with someone - especially with people like you. So thank you for your reactions. And Greetings from 🇫🇮😊
Everything you do and say is just so profound. I'm happy that I discovered you by coincidence today. Your work is simply amazing. Now excuse me while I start binge-watching every single video on your channel.
Hey Chase, many thanks for an exceptional response which punctuates commentary of expertise on GLS from NW. Congratulations with your very first Floorgasm; many more to come, I hope. Please keep on reaction to the Wacken 2013 concert in Germany. So many amazing songs to pick from. Welcome to the world of Nightwish, buckle up and enjoy your ride! BTW I subbed to your channel and rang the bell. Take care and stay save. Greetings from The Netherlands
Very well done analysis, can't wait for the rest of your journey down the rabbit hole that is Nightwish. All of the band members are extremely talented in what they do. They also have solo projects. Marko (the 'viking' bass player) is also an amazing singer for example. Subbed.
Chase: *hashes out detailed musical insight born from one who has been in a performing band for years* Also Chase: That one looks like a White Walker! Love you man
Great reaction. Everyone has their own genres of music that is their favorite which is fair enough - diversity brings creativity and we aren't robots. I do think that Nightwish should be bigger that they are outside Europe, Can you imagine them at the Grammy's? Original songs, a goddess for a singer? I doubt anyone would want to go on after them.
As a university trained composer and 30 year rock band veteran, I'm gonna say this dude is the most insightful reactor I've seen on the platform. He straight deduced that Tuomas was the composer by analyzing the way the piece is structured organically to support the keyboard part. Props.
Matt, I really appreciate the support and awesome words. Loving doing these and grateful for this.
@@ChaseCarneson You earned the praise, mate. You have a great ear and obvious experience. Keep it up!
I could not agree more! Also like how youre not afraid to talk over without pausing so that you dont miss the flow of the song. I know that the music isnt cutting back in your ears so youre not affecting how you hear it. People dont watch reaction videoa without already having a love for the song. i think it's the first time i see someone realizing Tuomas 's "influence" on Nightwish without knowing who he actually is and just by musical details... niiiice!

Right? It's amazing. I find it incredibly sad how few people know Toumas is the real mastermind. I still wish people would react to Tarja instead of Floor. It's so sad. I still think Tarja does it better. Floors high note at the end just isn't enough for me.
I found this part fascinating too.
It shows that he really knows about music
Chase: You probably need to watch it around 3-4 times to take everything in.
Me, after around 3000-4000 times: Yes.

I’ve watched this music video hundreds of times and I haven’t gotten tired of it. It’s on my personal music on my phone.
You broke this down better than most music teachers. It's kind of hilarious. It was amazing to hear the break down. Not enough go into that. Thank you. Absolutely loved your reaction.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Much more to come, I promise. Stay tuned.

There are a lot of fake teachers on youtube posting NW videos for views.
Yeah, the "music teachers", "vocal coaches", "recording artists", etc... Don't believe everything they tell you. Too many reactors try to give their channel more weight by giving themselves a certain title.

Nice one! Thanks for supporting. More Nightwish to come.
Also: “this is exhausting” that made me smile, also because this is after they already did 10 other songs in this show
@@renskevanderhaagen5813 I know first hand how difficult playing live can be, particularly when you're a really "Active" band.
Have a great day
"She is tall. Is she tall? Or is everyone short?" Well.. xD Yes and yes. Absolute Valkyrie.
Well she is Dutch. Dutch are the tallest people in Europe. Light skin tone and lots of Vitamin D sources like cheese I guess.
And then there's Emppu :-D
@@SK-nw4igalso Tuomas and Jukka are tall 😊

now the nightwish army will raid you.

Makes absolute sense. Fantastic to see.

Pip Williams in London helps out a lot - but under Tuomas' guidance!

Reading this a year later, Chase has become the undisputed #1 YB song analyst. I will not insult him by calling him a reactor.
"the keyboard player", can't help it but makes me laugh each time XD
Now I know better
thats why i love Nightwish. The theater, the dynamic range, the transitions, the calm to chaos and back again - then you get to the second verse
As Darth Vader would say, "Impressive!"

He figured out Toumas (keyboard) like in 6 minutes. impressive.
Yeah, had quite a few people mention that, and decided to read up a little. He's a mastermind for sure.

Someone summoned us????
I've been going through these Reaction vids. Seeing some have their first Floorgasm. It's amazing to watch their faces. XD
As a musician.
To play with a backtrack for 3 minutes is nuts. The precise timing it takes to stay in time. To do it for 10, 15, 20 minutes is insane.
You just summoned the Nightwish Army!) Thank you for sharing your reaction and welcome to the world of Symphonic Metal! Floorgasm achieved!)
Well, you've just witnessed Her Majesty Northern Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen, she is Dutch). Floor has classical background, rock academy behind, and used to be a vocal coach for a number of years. Floor is the most versatile and powerful female singer today and can sing anything from more pop-y style, classic opera, to metal screams and growls. Floor sings emotions, not words. And yes, she is tall -- 6'1 + heels)
Floor joined Nightwish in the middle of their Imaginaerum world tour in late 2012 (which includes this show). There is official documentary about all that -- "PLEASE LEARN THE SETLIST IN 48 HOURS" ( ua-cam.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/v-deo.html )
For Floor it was first really big gig with Nightwish, 82K people, at the time she was only for a few months with the band.
The mastermind behind 99% of lyrics and music is a keyboardist Tuomas -- you were right!)
Guitarist name is Emppu, and the drummer in this show is Jukka (Yukka), but later he was replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues.
Flutes/uilleann pipes/guitar/vocals - Troy, he did not perform in this song.
Nightwish is better live, always, so if live performance is available, go for it. In their performances, they often using recorded backtrack of a classical orchestra for their songs.
They have very diverse music, from more light songs to epic scores like this, and to really heavy metal stuff, don't think that all their music is alike -- it's opposite of it)
For the next step, I can suggest listening to:
- Storytime from the same Wacken 2013 live
- for move heavy: Ghost River, Song Of Myself, both from Wacken 2013 also
- If you want to explore more Floor versatility, check out her performances on a TV show Beste Zangers in 2019.
You just starting your journey with Nightwish, and be prepared to be surprised (and sometimes shocked) time and time again! Their music is very emotional and diverse.
Btw, Nightwish released their new album on April 10th (Human. :||: Nature.).

@@ChaseCarneson Very worth my subscribtion on your channel and glad there is more Nightwish coming!
Great reaction.Funny you should mention the keyboard player. His name is Tuomas and he is the main songwriter of the band. He writes most of the lyrics and the music(95% or so ). He is brilliant.
Makes sense now. I figured he played a crucial role in it all. Thanks for the insight.
Y'know, pedantically I would perhaps disagree with "songwriter"; composer might be nearer the mark, but I know what you mean.
That was the best analysis of the music structure I have ever heard. Especially on the fly as you listened to it for the first time. I've listened to Nightwish for a long time, but now I know technically why their music intrigues me. Thanks for you reaction. Subscription and a like here.
Uh-oh, you've done it now...down the NW rabbit hole you go. Floor has you in her grasp and she'll never let you go!

The whole band got extra boost when Floor join the band. So mush energy☺️.
Jouko Karjalainen ...she just fit so well... wouldn’t think she was only in the band for 4montha at this point
"oh there she is"
yeah mate, see you on the other side

🎼 Nightwish Live at Wacken Open Air 2013 🎶 Correct speed - FullHD - Remastered 🎶 - ua-cam.com/video/cAwtzi7Q3Bk/v-deo.html
Do yourself a favor, watch the concert start to finish. It's legendary. You don't have to react to it all at once (although other reactors have, we don't mind, we love watching this concert) or you can react song by song. Either way, you are in for a treat.
Raw audience recording, same song, same show: ua-cam.com/video/h51sYr_0K-s/v-deo.html
Yes. :(
@@dyingbreed1951 Nice one. Thanks for that, appreciate the support.
Thank you for this wonderful comment ❤️
Yes!!
Thanks for the support. Really appreciate that!
That sound you hear is 1,000 clarinet players rolling their eyes all at once.
@@jpdemer5 oh well, they're just failed saxophone players anyway /s
This was the best dissection of a Nightwish song ever! I'm sure you've been asked for many more from the army. And I look forward to what you have to say about them.
Tuomas, the song writer, is a genius and he has so many more great pieces of art, while also writing incredible pieces that you'd think was a band that lives half way around the world. So much talent in him and the musicians he has assembled!
"This is not my genre".
It is now. :-)
When you're right, you're right.
And this genre call Nightwish, I think?
🤣
Update: the Nightwish Saturdays are still going strong! 😃😂
You’re very very right with this. Thank you so much for messaging 🙏
Nightwish, Rammstein, and Within Temptation have really gotten to me the last few years. Enjoy them all !
The dude on the keys is the mastermind of this all...Hello and good evening btw.😎
Good reaction, good analyse enjoyed it much, Thnx for this! 🤘
This is one heck of a song to start it all with, there is more, lots more.
Well Thnx for this, again and till the next
...Have Fun 🖐
Ow oops 😁 almost forgot that sensational feeling you experienced at the end after that Note...is what we call a Floorgasm. 😋
If you continue on this journey expect more to follow... 😎
Just enjoy them 🤪
The "cartoon like" description of spot on. I was thinking the same thing. It takes the serious tone of the sudden dissonant downward melody the guitar just came in with and smooths it over without being too comical.
Copied from elsewhere
"A Dutch vocalist singing in English as part of a Finnish band playing in Germany"
You forgot Troy, the british multi instrument dude :)
I’ve seen them live and can guarantee that she can sound exactly like that in real life. Truly exceptional singer.
I think masterclass is a fitting term: Your reactions are like the masterclass for listening to music ;-)
I am shocked by the amount of details you can grasp on the first run.
Therefore my suggestions would be:
- Travel in Stygian - ua-cam.com/video/kL8QGC3GXNs/v-deo.html
- Desert Rain - ua-cam.com/video/auVlddyN4zk/v-deo.html
- Dantes Inferno (16 Minutes long, but well worth it) - ua-cam.com/video/KKABLbWbUPM/v-deo.html
Greetings from Austria and have a damn good day!
First reaction ever I came back to. It's cool to see where you started from, and to see where you are today. Just awesome. ❤
My dude, thank you! I appreciate you! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for this awesome insight and support.
woah, when you really have read on the fly whats coming up next and what Tuomas' part in songwriting is - holy smokes. Never realized it myself, but when you said it I was like "yah, thats exactly it" Thank you very much for this reaction! Subbed.
it's a total new experience watching and listening to this masterpiece with comments from someone who can understand music so well. thanks, chase!
Wow thank you so much for the kind comments.
When ever a reactor gets chills from Floors heavenly voice, I sub. Welcome to the wonderful journey with symphonic metal. Enjoy! Regards from Nightwish fan since 1997 🤘🏼🤘🏼
7:56 Well, I know you already saw How's the Heart acoustic version, you definitely can have them on much smaller stage as well;)
On a side note, a lot of people do not pay attention to it the first time and I cannot blame them, but Nightwish have really great lighting and superb use of pyrotechnics, it is as if the visuals were part of the music sheet.
And Greetings from 🇫🇮😊
Your observations are amazingly educative and fun to follow. Thanks!
Thank you for kind words and support. Really means a lot.
Everything you do and say is just so profound. I'm happy that I discovered you by coincidence today. Your work is simply amazing. Now excuse me while I start binge-watching every single video on your channel.
Binge away haha. Thank you for the support and kind words.
"This isn't my kind of genre, this is not something I listen to regularly. Nowhere near." In hindsight this is a very entertaining remark. :D
Thank you for your detailed and passionate reaction : the real tribute Nightwish deserves !
Very well done analysis, can't wait for the rest of your journey down the rabbit hole that is Nightwish. All of the band members are extremely talented in what they do. They also have solo projects. Marko (the 'viking' bass player) is also an amazing singer for example. Subbed.
Neither can I. More coming soon
This is by far the best reaction in terms of breaking the song down I have seen on youtube. Well done, Sir.
Shout out for the people that's re-watching his first Nightwish reaction in the end of 2020!
I so love your reactions. Thank you. Don't change
I'd love to see your reaction to Song of Myself which is the very next song they do in this concert, my personal favourite!
Yeah, that one is amazing... one of my personal favorites. Love how the song turns dark...and even darker halfway through the song!
Chase: *hashes out detailed musical insight born from one who has been in a performing band for years*
Also Chase: That one looks like a White Walker!
Love you man
Subbed - really enjoyed your analysis
Thanks for the support. More coming very very soon.
"First drummer I've ever seen have chimes on stage and actually use them."
Might I suggest Rush performing Xanadu? Chimes, glockenspiel, bell tree...
I'm very happy watching these reacts. This is my absolute favorite song and it keeps getting shared around the world
