How do you know if you need a full tummy adjustment? My waist measurement is usually 3 sizes bigger than my hips….

Hi there Burke Brewer, My ears just perked up...
I heard you say that you have preformed the reverse surgery of a tummy adjustment for the smaller " back side " alteration! How cool is tha? Simply awesome Dr. Burke! Do tell. How does it work; do we slide from the outside seam allowance inward, to overlap some of
    the width toward center front?
This is exciting. I am subscribing. Thumbs up

Could you not draw a line from the new waistline to the previous hemline so you reduce the width on the drape at the sides creating a style similar to the original? Unless you have very narrow more apple shaped figure you still need some curve in the hip I would think. This is the first I've watched at full tummy adjustment, wish I saw it last fall when I was making a few special occasion dresses!

How can this be done so that the skirt doesn't hang from the protrusion of the belly and away from the thighs?

I loved your tutorial, and it worked well for my skirt sloper. Thank you for taking the time to show this in such great detail.
My question going forward is this: I assume if I need this on my skirts, I also need it on my bodice sloper. However, I am having trouble finding resources that show how to do that. Do you have any suggestions on how to do the full tummy adjustment on a bodice?
I have seen it done on pants which seems similar to the skirt. Therefore, when I get to my pants sloper I now know what to do. ;-).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! I’m so glad you liked the tutorial! If you’re adding to an already established dart on your skirt, the skirt should line up with the bodice. However, if you need to add extra room to the waist of the bodice, I like the hinge method: mark the seam allowance at the under arm on the front bodice pattern and along the side seam. Then draw another line from the point at the under arm down to the waistline. Cut that line but leave a hinge at the under arm and spread the pattern the width you need (width divided by 2 to account for the pattern only being half the body). I hope that makes sense without a visual aid but you can google slash and spread adjustments and should find some photos. Hope this helps!!

@@ModernSeamstress would you have to add a dart if it has an elastic waist?

If it’s an elastic waist you probably won’t need to add a dart, just incorporate the width added into the gathering of the skirt when attached to the elastic!
