- Returning to the gorgeous duality of David Draimen’s voice we’ll be checking out some of the unique sounds of Disturbed’s “Down With The Sickness”. It’s like there’s part angel and demon going on here so join me in breaking down this marvellous singer who destroyed me with “Sound of Silence”.

You need to also remember that you're looking at a relatively new band in this video. You can hear that David's voice is much younger and less mature than the one you heard in "Sound of Silence". Sixteen years of touring does a lot to a lead singer's vocal cords... some good, some bad, depending on how they use them. In David's case, I think he sounds better today than he did 20 years ago. This tells me he hasn't abused his voice, as much as strengthened it.
so true his only gotten better with time
He also had to operate his stomache because he got reflux stomache acid ( don't know exact naming for this) so it came up on his throat and hurt his vocal folds. So his voice has changed because of this aswell of i recall correctly from an interview he did
@@thestar37 wtf i did not know
@@thestar37 Acid reflux?
David has aged like a fine whiskey. He still has his bite, but he's also smooth as glass.
Would love to see a reaction to the longer uncensored version of the song at some point. Or "Prayer", that song is fantastic
Yub. The full version is really "disturbed". I don't think it would add anything from a vocal standpoint ;)
Prayer for sure! Or remember
Prayer would be a great one
Prayer, sure, great song. But I prefer that bit cut out od DwtS if I'm honest.
I like Prayer, but would rather see The Light personally.
He did an interview about this one and he said originally that growl wasn't in the song, he did it spur of the moment during a training session and after the shock of the rest of the band wore off they decided to do it like that from then on.
Here's the interview if anyone is interested ua-cam.com/video/PQS2WWTEefY/v-deo.html
Thanks for sharing the link.
I too appreciate the link. many times in the comments, people do give good trivia and interesting facts, but don't reference anything, hard to know what is truly fact and whats made up
@@sshhddoo9892 agreed, the funny thing is that interview is part of a much longer one about that very concept. Most of the questions was about things people were saying about them and if it was true or not.
The Sound of Silence and Down With the Sickness are almost each end of the Disturbed spectrum. There are so many fantastic songs I can't even decide which ones to recommend.
David Draiman. The Devil's dolphin. Absolutely amazing voice, one of my favourite.
The devil's dolphin... OMG that's amazing
You, sir, win the internet. My next D&D character is going to be an infernal dolphin bard.... :D
@@jasonGamesMaster So glad i could inspire 😁
The devils dolphin
Thanks for the future band name
Best description I've heard of David's voice:
God: So David, do you want the voice of an angel or the voice of a demon?
David: Yes
you should definitely do the Richard Cheese lounge singer version of this one. it's kind of priceless.
Absolutely it's the song dawn of the dead opens with
100%
I was about to type the exact same thing! (his BABY GOT BACK is a killer at karaoke, too!)
i concur!!!
It is.
Oh this is gonna be goooooood. Really looking forward to seeing Julia’s face on the first “ooo ah ah ah ah”!
Edit: haha priceless.
I was lucky enough to catch Disturbed in a small venue in Nashville very early in their career and...David was an an absolute force on stage. Everything you highlight for his voice, is so much more impactful live because of stage presence. Honestly as a an amateur vocalist, David's work inspires the hell out of me.
Stricken is a Disturbed song you should check out. It's one of my personal favorites from them.
It’s so good.
The sort of staccato sound to his consonants in the chorus is kind of his trademark sound. It's prevalent in a lot of Disturbed's songs
If you want to hear an amazing example of David's range, I highly recommend Save Our Last Goodbye. On top of his amazing vocal work, the song has a huge emotional element to it, similar to Cory Taylor and Snuff.
Down With the Sickness is probably the most well-known Disturbed song, and the "oh-wah-ah-ah-ah" in it is certainly the most iconic of David's "noises", but there are other songs where he makes different noises, and does them more often. Asylum and This Moment come to mind immediately, followed by Stricken, The Game and Haunted.
Other songs I would recommend would be Pain Redefined (more for the unusual progression and cadence on the verses than anything else) and Overburdened (for more of his "sweet" tone - I would agree that that's a good adjective for it).
Shame that official MV has a certain part cut out of it. Also it's worth mentioning that between Down with the Sickness and Sound of Silence there is at least half of a decade gap in vocal improvement. Another thing worth mentioning is that David got some kind of vocal cords surgery in the mean time.
It’s my understanding he had an issue with acid reflux that was causing discomfort to his chords.
Apparently he had surgery to address that along with diet changes.
He addressed that on a interview I saw somewhere on UA-cam.
@@mjc1389 That sounds reasonable. I don't remember the details, I only know that it happened around the Warsaw show I had tickets too and everyone was a bit scared of cancellation after 10 years absence. And not gonna lie - he didn't sound to well back then.
The surgical procedure he had done actually failed after a period of time and there isn't enough tissue for surgeons to repair it again.
Gist of details i recall in said interview.
David Draimen has a monstrous voice.
Yeah, having listened to Disturbed from back in the day and this being the band's sound I was familiar with, _The Sound of Silence_ completely blew my mind and made me love them even more.
When I hear this song, I have thoughts about one thing.
When I was an indy wrestling referee, I met a guy who went by the named “Hardcore Kid” during a show in Jesup, Georgia. I had his match against Adam Lyger, who was a friend of his. They had an incredible match that went about 8 minutes. After the match, I ran to the back and thanked both of them for the match. I did another match they did with Darin Lynch, another person I was close with who threw out the idea of me being a “heel referee.” Five years later, I’m working for a group down here in Charleston , SC and he’s on the card but now known as “Josh Magnum.” For his entrance he used “Down With The Sickness.”
A few years later, I get on a “Hall of Fame” show being held by a group in Orangeburg, SC as part of the group in Charleston. I get to the show with a friend who was working as a manager on the show. I get to the show and find out that it’s a tag team match with Josh in it and I had the match. Now, the group that was hosting the show was a group that Josh was HUGELY over with the company’s fanbase. Plus, Josh hadn’t worked for them in a couple of years and they didn’t know he was going to be there. Once I realized that, my brain went full throttle into an idea to get as big of a reaction as possible.
I’m in the ring with the ring announcer and he introduces the match. The first ones out were the heels with the manager who rode up with me. They get in the ring and taunt the fans. Then, the ring announcer introduces the 1st half of them who comes out to “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson. He comes down the aisleway and walks around ringside while high-fiving fans. He gets back to the aisleway and stops. After a very brief pause, the lights go out and his entrance video comes on as that opening drumbeat starts. I knew the reaction would be good but I wasn’t prepared for this.
The crowd, which was maybe 300 people, went crazy. I couldn’t hear myself think. I could barely hear the music which was blaring in the National Guard Armory where this was. I was doing everything I could to not react myself. It’s one of my favorite moments as a referee. So, whenever I hear that song, that’s the first thing I think of. Also, earlier in the back, I was talking with Josh about the reaction he would get when he came out. In his deep voice with a strong Southern drawl, he looks at me and says,”Brother, I don’t think they’re going to remember me.”
I think this may have played a role in why I enjoy reaction videos.
Censored version :/ great video Julia. But imo, the uncensored version is unique. Just because that part is the important part, basicly. But ye... Keep it up with the content!
You should definitely listen (and reacts !) to the long version of this song, there's a part you HAVE TO hear it's just insane
No. The rant in the middle really kills the song. It feels so immature.
@@RobbieFitzgerald Agreed. She also indicated in the on screen text that she later watched a live version of this and it included the "When I Dream" portion.
@@RobbieFitzgerald It's fine when you're hearing it at the age of 11 in the early 2000s. When you're 32 and the guy performing it is in his 50s, you do kinda wonder what convinced you to listen to it in the first place.
@@DragonTigerBoss Couple yrs older than you but yup. I mean I get it. I understand the point. Its meant to be powerful. But I honestly have never liked that part. It always felt out of place.
@@RobbieFitzgerald Yep, I found it a little edgelordy even as a kid. Didn't get into Disturbed until Ten Thousand Fists. Those guys can write an anthem.
2:44 Exactly. I was listening to Disturbed for years before they did "The Sound of Silence." Their established style of music makes their rendition of that song even more mindblowing because of what a departure it was. And yet, it was so expertly executed.
And it wasn't their first cover on one of their albums. They did a cover of Shout by Tears for Fears on their album The Sickness. They did Land of Confusion by Genesis on their album Ten Thousand Fists. It wasn't until their album Immortalized in 2015 that they did their cover of The Sound of Silence. And now it has become one of their most well-known songs.
If you want to hear David's clean voice, "Hold on to Memories" is a beautiful song both tonality and lyricly.
One of the key points is Draiman has classical training as well, which I think just exemplifies his vocal range and ability to transition out of the growls and into some incredible cleans
This groove and David's vocal attitude is so good in this song. Infectious. So much missing from their newer stuff
I don’t listen to all of their music but I do listen to several of their songs. David is the person that opened my eyes to how skilled a lot of heavy metal singers are.
Really great job! Really comprehensive! Keep it coming! Really great!🙂
Ahhhh I've been hoping you would tackle this one. Definitely the most in-depth analysis of this song I've found!
An overall great recent song for you to enjoy is "The Light".
There's probably 25 Disturbed songs you could analyze and react to. All varied but all interesting and a showcase of David and the Band's talents. Love your channel and your interactions with Elizabeth.
The "When I dream" part is the best part!!
Love your reaction! Luv from here in Australia ❤️🎼❤️🎼❤️
I like your discriptions of the sounds so much. Thats the way we all know what you mean and feel it. Thank you
when you mentioned the approach as a long time disturbed listener that is awesomely true due to the fact that most of their song is in this kind of pace
Great reaction as always!!!
Glad you listened to this. David is one heck of a vocalist. My kids got me into them way back when. Been rocking since I drove my parents nuts in the 60's lol. This guy has got the goods! Keep rockin'.
This always brings back watching Day of the Dead (2008) for the first time.
Glad we were able to see this. I’ve set this as my alarm.
Seeing you fall in love with David all over again just shows your appreciation for music always taking each song as an individual experience, much respect. Thank you for this
David’s use of his growling voice when he is talking in the ‘demon’ element of his psyche will always blow my mind
The "When I Dream" part is there in the original album version as well, it's not just something for live performances.
Having him look me square in the eye after fighting for the front rail...I was so touched!
I got introduced to Disturbed about 15 or 16 years ago on a local radio station here in New Jersey.
Of course I went out and bought a couple of their CDs to hear more.
Spent a lot of time listening to them while waiting to pick up my daughter at cheer practice and became a big fan.
I love post-video Julia 😆 I'd really like to see more footage of you exploring the different sounds and their execution
I read elsewhere that Dave was classically trained as a Cantor. I know nothing of the technical side of vocals, but he is a great singer.
Another great analysis with the added bonus of your best visual reaction since "Aqualung" or "Hurt". looked like you and David had a moment in the beginning with the whispered "You feel that" like the visual reaction "My empire of dirt" with Johnny Cash. You can see the emotional connection you're having with the music which is the thing that I thik sets your reactions, Chase's, Elizabeth's etc apart from the vast majority of reactors. You just dont listen and analyze, you feel and understand the music. Bravo again!
This was the radio edit. In the full version there is a full section after the 'when I dream' that deals with an abusive parent and turning the tables on that parent. That section is a bit dark for my taste.
I noticed that you also watched a live version later and it included the "When I Dream" part. Some think that part of the song is integral, while others find it unnecessary, immature, and that it drags the song down. I'm glad you watched live and recorded and got the full and "radio/video edit" versions. Shows that you really put in the work to be able to fully comment on his singing. Hope you're well! ~Be Blessed
Ayup, I agree. I'm in the camp that I feel that it's a integral part of the song, but having someone experience both versions of it I do feel it's best.
this came out 23 years ago... I feel old
2000s era metal making the rounds again in 2023. Some good sh*t…from the nostalgic Nu Metal era to the brilliant underground. A better period than originally thought. Glad it’s getting the spotlight back on it. 🤘🏽
As a female singer you should check out the Ai Mori Violet Orlandi cover of this 🖤 those girls kill it, I love Ai Mori!
David studied as a cantor in his synagogue in his youth that helped his singing, he did a great interview with the charismatic voice you can check out.
Hooray for finding and exploring cool new noises! From what you said I reckon you'd enjoy watching some behind the scenes videos on foley work and people making "found sound" music, though there can be little to no vocal elements the fundamental ideas behind it can be similar
The head really starts bobbing around 4:15... love seeing people FEEL music!
When you mentioned if you had listened to this before Sound of Silence you are absolutely correct and it's how I felt.
People are definitely amazed when hearing both songs you have reacted to so far from them. They did another cover of if I ever loose my faith in you I think you would really enjoy. Forever fan, Bob in Pennsylvania
back here to bump the algos. Your channel is fantastic. nuff said.
Disturb's The Light would be another great song to analyze as well
Great reaction and Analysis Little lady!
You should check out something a bit later in their discoraphy.
Inside the Fire is both an amazing song and amazing video.
I love Disturbed since they are from my home state of Illinois since they are from the Chicago area and have loved them since they came out
Great break-down Julia!!! This was fun. And you pointed out a couple things that I've never consciously noticed before. The extra vowels and the "y-in me".
And I think this is now by favorite blooper/out-take reel!! 😁😆

#ConstipatedCat
💚🤎
I luv you so much, Julia. You are HILARIOUS!
The note about how his voice is percussive is basically the driving mechanic behind most harsh vocals. The more instrumental the voice the better.
finally i can coment the same day the video is posted lol
love all your videos btw 🖤
This has been on my play list many years LOL Maybe I need help but I love It 🤘
Awwww, you listened to the short version of the song. I wish they'd take that version off of UA-cam. David has a great voice and I love singers like him and Tatiana Shmailyuk, Mike Patton, Ronnie Redke and Courtney LePlante who can do so much with their voices.
Love this! I hope you react to more Disturbed. If you do more I suggest the songs The Vengeful One, Who Taught You How to Hate, Prayer, Stricken, or Awaken
"Stricken". I've always loved that one as my favorite example of David's "harsh" side of his vocal techniques. Plus, it helps that the song is kick-ass.
The use of his vocals as a strong part of the rhythm and not just the melody is what first got me into Disturbed.
Namely, the first song I heard of theirs was Liberate, and the way his vocals blend melody and rhythm so completely in that song's verses in particularly really got me.
I'm not saying no others are doing similar things, but he just does it so well. There's a clean-ness to it that I've rarely heard elsewhere.
Great reaction to one of my favs, thanks! My vocal recommendation would be to do Disturbed's Stupify next, it's a perfect display of almost every different aspect of David's voice, on top of that it's an exceptional banger of a song. Rock on!
What you just listened to was the short version, you should listen to the full version or the live version from the concert at Red Rocks
the tone to make it sound like vowel it is
Really interesting talking about what made him make those sounds. My voice was VERY affected by AIC and the singing patterns from Layne and Jerry. So it makes so much sense that he makes those noises because of something he did when he was a babe.
So I was randomly looking for videos of people reacting to this song. Had to pause the video and subscribe after I realized that those in depth paragraphs you put in post were going to be done for most of the song. Looking forward to checking out your other content. If you wanted to try an anime song I highly you try any song from Bocchi the Rock
David Draiman and Chester Bennington both have a voice of an angel and the scream of a demon. They both have soft calming voices but they both also have the ability to do a more harsh vocal that just goes right through you in a good way.
I always wait for those David sounds. When I first started listening to Disturbed, i knew when it was Disturbed by that "OH-WAH-AH-AH-AH!"
I would love to see you look into Gary Numan; especially of the last 8-10 years. Most know him only for "Cars" but his discography goes so much further. And his unique voice is a good match for his styles of music. "Down in the Park" Live at Brixton Academy, "My Name is Ruin" also live at Brixton (Bonus: First tour with his daughter Persia as accompaniment.) Many, many more options.
I'm glad you watched the full version too. A shame that it wasn't in the video, but at least you've heard it, cause I always thought it a shame that most reactors just watch the official "clean" version w/o the "mommy" verse.
This is a man whose voice can tear you down and light you up, honestly i don't know a lot of people who can touch your soul quite like him.
If you listen to one more song from Disturbed i recommend 'The Light'
As always a beautiful comment from you from one of my favourite artists!
I’d love to hear you react with isolated vocal tracks of this song as well. Unaccompanied by instruments, you can better hear how well David alternates between clean and distorted.
I wasn't prepared for that intro. I definitely dropped my croissant.
Lol, the outtakes at the end. To make that 'noise' (lol), you have to sort of go into subharmonic and then squeeze off the air. As you squeeze off the air, you'll notice the pitch going up. If you want higher volume, put in a bit more pressure. This will hurt your throat though, so don't sustain for too long.
The 'dog bark' is high pressure bursts into a growl. Normally you need sustained high pressure for a growl... for the bark, you increase the pressure a bit more beyond that, but you don't sustain.
very well reacted
Hi my friend great reaction has always a young gentleman taking UA-cam by storm is ren -hi ren this video has had 3 million views in 2 weeks and it is pure genius worth a look many thanks love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing channel 👍
Yes he does do the drop down vocals live
Really should have done the full version.
Such a great time they had some incredible songs.
I don't always Get Down with the Sickness, but when I do I AWK! AWK! .... madness is the gift that has been given to me.
Gotta say seeing Draiman's voice described as sweet with this song is pretty funny, given how messed up the uncensored version is
Good for you. You have heard both ends of David's vocal spectrum. Maybe you would like to bounce back to his cleaner end with Hold onto Memories. This will pull on your heartstrings.
I had heard about this song from friends who referred to it as the “monkey” song.
The first time I actually listened to it I picked up on the reason not only due the intro but the chorus to me initially sounded like “knock your monkey down with the sickness”.
I later read the lyrics and now I can pick out the correct phrasing of the chorus.
The censored part of the song has been wildly interpreted by fans over the years.
David has explained the band’s sentiment of the meaning in interviews but they leave it up to the fans to assign their own interpretation.
They often address social issues in their songs that may be controversial.
Memories is really good
You should listen to the uncut version too. 😁
He has such a great range - voice and songs both. If you wanna see the other softer end of the range, try 'The Light', it's a great song, with a great meaning - you need the video for the full impact tho.
Other favourites of mine are 'Immortalized', 'Indestructable', 'The Night', 'The Animal'(warning, the vid is *extremely* disturbed!), 'Deify'...so many great songs.
For those who didn't know the ooo ahahaha at the start of the song wasn't originally part of it, he said he added it and the band looked at him
you should definitely check out in this moment, specifically big bad wolf, but really any of their songs. insane female metal vocalist
Falling in Reverse has a new so g out!
It's phenomenal. Waiting anxiously for your review.
Great video julia, i like it more when you do metal videos.
Please do a video reaction of disturbed singing "the light"! It has heavy moments but mostly toned down, somewhere mid way between Sound of silence and Down with the sickness. I think it is a Fantastic song that showcases his pronunciation brilliantly, with softer tones and belts as well. Given your thoughts on these two Disturbed songs, I think you'll like it :)
He has an amazing singing voice!
Vengeful One, Land of Confusion or Decadence would be good choices, and Indestructible is always top of my suggestions.
Great Reaction Beautiful young lady 😎🤘..Hello from New Hampshire U.S.A 👋
What a great song! I just wish that Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem would do a cover, featuring Fozzie Bear on lead vocals... "Waka waka!"
