Today we take a look at how I approach lighting in our Mini Documentaries, share some tips and tricks, then move into some lighting breakdowns!
This video is all the light i needed in my day.
Yep, are you from Finland, if you are then that’s probably why. Now is May and it’s still snowing

Not gonna lie I thought they were lightsabers in the thumbnail
So did I

Phenomenal video, I'm jealous of your ability to use and understand lighting to an extent eclipsing most film/TV students I've met!
Lighting is really important! Well done Oli! 👏

Thanks so much! You made me taking a closer look at my lighting not only for animations but also for feature filming and just casual shooting. I learnt a lot from here and it's absolutely awesome that you share your knowledge with others!
Lighting is my favorite part of film making. There's so much creativity and experimentation. It can completely change your film.
Thanks! I've been getting into photography lately, and this was really helpful!
my friend's gunna be soo happy when she sees you've uploaded this! She loves filming and has been having difficulties with lighting. Thanks!
Man Mumbo seriously a five hour hermitcraft stream and this your insane
Love your filming channel
Wisdom - the stuff you get right after you needed it.
I just finished a project (Virtual Choir 6 submission) in a bedroom with the overhead light, then two shadeless desk lamps in front of two pieces of white foamcore and a cheap-o RGB dance light, all propped up on flimsy cardboard boxes. All in all, the shadows on the wall were pretty terrible, and the video overall was super dark with the camera settings set to max on everything. Now that the video's all up, submitted, and done, I thought, "hey you know who would probably already have a good explanation of techniques and easier options for this mess?" Lo and behold, here I am!
Next time, Mumbo. Next time.
God, this is revolutionary! Your lighting was so good that I didn't even realize you were using external lights half the time. I'll have to make use of this information!
This is so awesome that your sharing your experiences and teaching us how you do what you do. I love watching the mini documentaries you make. Somehow you always find the most interesting people. Thank you.
These films are of such high quality!!! Whenever they pop into my sub box, it makes my day!
The aspect ratio of this video makes me genuinely happy, I love when creators film in 18:9
Your face in the thumbnail is priceless...
i've always been watching your minecraft redstone videos but this is the first time of documentaries made by you and surprised that its quality is so amazing i do hope you to keep going this way (sorry for my poor english)
I really like your short documentaries. Keep it up!
Boi, Im not even into film making, but you still managed to make this amusing for me! Youre great, spoon. Boring, bye.
Kamerbom Kai Rude.
Spoons...
Connor Guidry he has another channel that he’s a spoon on, it’s not rude because it’s a joke.
I'm currently watching the hermitcraft series again, (1 through 6) but it's amazing to see how much you've changed! (I know this isn't about the video, making UA-cam comments 1% worse, but still, I wanna point that out.)
I have just learned more about lighting than I ever wanted to know, but I'm NOT sorry! Really, even my family pics or my dog pics will benefit from this education. I watched enough of Mumbo Docs to notice light and shadow before seeing this explanation, but this makes so much sense that I feel "duuuurrrrppp" (or "spoon", as Mumbo would say). Really, this was very simple, and I'm sure Mumbo and others could make it almost impossible to understand! However, this is almost easier than redstone! Thank you!
Love this channel Oli. Don't know how you put this effort in while also keeping up with mumbo jumbo.
I know this is all about light but, not going to lie I was excited to hear that there are other people that use Gaffers Tape to semi randomly tape stuff to make the final product better. I am positive I am using it in ways it was probably never meant to be used but... it works.
Thanks for the free trial, I can not wait to learn my own cinematography work and web design work!
You should film a documentary based on minecraft :0

I WANT MORE OF THESE. I'm a photographer in training 😁
Mumbo the jedi knight.
I still can't get over the voice of mumbo jumbo looks like this and it's awesome
Very resourceful usage of ordinary, and inexpensive items for supplemental lighting. Thanks for the video. :)
Congratulations on your first sponsorship!
Hey Oli, great breakdowns! You could do more of these... ;)
But what is the haze in your studio? Did you actually hazed the room? Or is it something like a pro mist filter on the lens? I really like the look of the scene. Have a great weekend!
3:43: WOAH HES GOT LIGHTSABERS 😂😂
Love this channel. I first watched yo beacause u like redstone. But now I like filming as well.
Thank you for all you do. You're a good soul.
This man is an expert on both minecraft redstone and documentary lighting. No doubt he could afford everything.
Great content. Loved the lighting explanation
That's a nice play button in the background 👍🏻
Okay now I see it 😃
Mumbo, you will most definitely be my first choice of information for when I need to create a Mini Documentary
Great vid Mumbo. How do you feel about GoPros
Mumbo, I really like your style and the way you help and describe how you do it to new comers. I was wondering what would be a good camera and software that is easy to start with.
Looking good, Mumbo
Heck yeah man good job mumbo! I love it keep going!
Mumbo since you love photography and filmmaking so much I think you should use a facecam in your Minecraft vidoes! You should try it one to see if you like it first
Mumbo: Talks about Lighting..
Also Mumbo: Never uses it on other channel
didnt wanna be that guy but saw the joke but honestly good tios and your mini docs are just really amazing tbh
Woo! Mumbo got a sponsor! Congrats!
this video clearly says that like other UA-camrs , Mumbo is not a 10 MINUTE VIDEO mark guy
mumbo is awesome that way. he's not doing it for the money.
captin redx that's awesome
XD I thought the thumbnail said LIGHTNING MINI DOGS so i was like, YAY GLOWING HOT DOGS
Mumbo: uses lightning to make himself look better. It's OK Mumbo, we like you as you are.
Oh, no way! Mumbo has sponsors!!!
I'm loving the aspect ratio 😉
I was wondering now for quite a while, and i saw it a few times on youtube, how do you get such nice light spills from lights? Do you have an anamorphic lens or a filter or something? I am really curious :D
You should now do a "Lighting for Minecraft" video, with tips for hiding lighting or ways to make it look better!
you're Mumbo Jumbo of Minecraft? You're a talented guy
I think the lights you use are really good. I would probably use Titan and Helios tubes from Astera.
This is going to be very handy for me
Congrats on the sponsor Mumbo!
Really does help out for cinematographers, do you consider yourself as a videographer or cinematographer
Amazing Mumbo!
Looking good Oli !
Hi Mumbo Jumbo. I had a couple of questions. What type of computer would you recommend for doing HD or 4k video editing, and what type of software do you use for your video editing? Also, do you have a recommendation on a good HD or 4k video camera that won't break the bank? I have a blog channel ( the-unraveling-mind.com) that I will soon be launching a UA-cam channel for as well, and was looking for some insight. By the way, love watching your minecraft channel with the family. I am planning on launching 2 blogs this week... one on minecraft in general, and the second on top minecraft UA-cam channels to follow. Don't worry, you made the cut! Lol. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks!
I lOOOOVEEEE cameras! i bought one recently! by the way, any tips for new filmakers? Like im trying to make a mine movie!
Any chance of more of these types of videos in the next month as in a month I am making a mini documentary for my diploma. Also link to the lights?
Try Carpet tape to stick your lights where you want. I don't know if in the UK it's called carpet tape so I will describe it. It's a double sided tape and the one you want has some fabric in the middle and should be super sticky.
i just came from the stream where you said you don't care about numbers on tis channel. i still add one to the like and view counter. (allready subbed :)
Quick question, how did you learn about all these filming techniques (school, self taught etc.)
Keep up the good work, lad!
I took one look at the thumbnail and thought you'd became a jazz-loving Jedi
Mumbo, could you help me...
I and my friend from The A's Entertainment are going to make a mini-documentary but it hard for us to get the perfect lighting and what would you suggest for interviewing people and cinematic style in nature sunlight
So guys, we did it, we reached a quarter of a million subscribers, 250,000 subscribers and still growing the fact that we've reached this number in such a short amount of time is just phenomenal, I'm-I'm just amazed. Thank you all so much for supporting this channel and helping it grow. I-I love you guys... You guys are just awesome.
After all this redstone madness... This feels pretty wierd 😉 nice video mumbo!
33rd! Hi Oli/Mumbo! I already watched your full livestream earlier today lol keep up the good work on your channel I really love your videos.
(Ik you probably won’t read this but I hope you do😀.)
Man Ajax just lost in the CL... I'm very upset, everyone right here is 🇳🇱... however, watching this video calms me down🤒
Why does that small light make me think "end rod"? ;)
Mumbo I thought this video was very interesting but I thought the those "lights" from Amazon were funny. You never told us you were secretly a jedi knight😂😂😂
You got a sponsor! Well done
Mr. Oliver Brotherhood if not mistaken. What are your equipments?
Really well done video. Do you have a link to the lights?
I really like your tips. I often use Them for 3D Animation. 😁
when you realize mumbo doesn't have a mustache
MUMBOS FIRST SPONSER !!!!!!!!!!
🤣🤣
Can you do a video about how you colour grade your documentaries?
Mumbo looks much different then I thought he would!
Oh no, skillshare got Mumbo too
Just kidding, good that you are getting sponsors!
Thanks for that free premium mumbo
Quick question, would you get an 8K camera if you could afford it? Do you think its unnecessary with all those pixels and those massive video files?
I'm not Mumbo but I think I can help. 8K Is great to have if you can afford it but definitely not necessary if you're on a platform like UA-cam. Most content online (not movies or shows) isn't shot in 8K because there are very few people with 8K displays, it's not cheap, and it takes a beast of a machine to edit.
But even if you're exporting your content in 4K shooting in 8K has plenty of benefits. Downscaling from 8K todo 4K can actually result in a sharper image because the original picture has more information. Also if you're exporting in 4K You can scale your footage in pistol up to 4 times original size without losing quality. This helps if you need a tighter shot than what you captured in camera or if you need to stabilize your footage in post.
Shooting in 8K Also helps future-proof your content. If you want to rerelease a video in the future when 8K or higher becomes standard your content will already be up to date even though it has a little age on it.
Sorry for the long answer but I hope this helps.
Who else read the thumbnail as lighting mini dogs?
Mini dogumentaries
😂
I didn't
@@jaydenkamp7986 OMG hilarious!=D
Yee lol 🤣
Lighting is very important. I had a creeper spawn in my kitchen the other day so I'm keeping lights on at all times from now on.
So close to 250k subscribers!
The portable light looks like a lightsaber in the video ......
Mumbo do star wars skit wirh vik please ..

Thanks Oli!
Nice video as always!
Do you use redstone for the lightning?
Is that what Mumbai looks like whoa that’s crazy man
Can we get a link to the amazon battery powered light? Ideally an affiliate link 😉
