Ladies and gentlemen, Jorge Navarro is not fooling around. This man transformed a medium quality recording (I own the DVD, I know) of a great show into something so delightful that anyone in their right mind (that's right) would have to consider it one of the top 10 most important and impressive musical documents of the 20th century. I'm not kidding, it's up there with the original rule-bending score of the Rite of Spring, with A Love Supreme, with Duke Ellington's American marriage of African and European influences, with the best work of Varèse, Berg, Ligeti, Messiaen, Reich, and all those other wonderful composers. Hats off to Jorge Navarro, all hail!
Miles Davis... - you are spot on! -- of course there's others Like Thelonious Monk, Bird, C.Mingus and.lots of others. - Theodore "Fats" Navarro, the list is very Long...
True that. But "metal"? I understand the use of said term to describe various segments, but I wonder if it is the best descriptor for the heavier sounds. I am not critiquing at all, just pondering the music you rightly refer to as "unclassifiable stuff". Sure, metal. Why not? And regardless of classifications, FZ is the ultimate musical savant and master of every type of music, transcending genre boundaries and inventing several new ones all of which reflect his genius and skill In short, you're right: No one does it like Zappa!
@@michaelkottler Zappa specifically used metal as a reference. You might know about his hand signal system? He had hand signals for things like reggae, ska, and other things, and one of them was metal (he would mime "big balls" for it). Is it "straight" metal? Of course not! It wouldn't be Zappa if it were. Now, I know metal fans can be touchy about that kind of thing. God forbid you confuse death metal with black metal or something, but as a reference for a particular type of sound, I think it applies.
Frank Zappa was for guitar what John Coltrane was for the sax or Miles Davis for the trumpet. This was iconic. It will not be repeated in the same form by anybody.

Thank you Frank, wherever your at. I turned on a nephew to live in Barcelona. He was blown away. He passed it on to his young friends, and are still out in the cosmos. Now they tune in to F Zappa's University. R.I.P.
His ability to lift his bandmates to the highest performance level possible is still the most outrageous stage feat ever! Infinity was always lurking inside the band as FZ sculpted it's features. Frank is forever Tops in my Book.
FZ is one of the greatest musical geniuses of any era. His quick wit and satire come through in his lyrics, and the musical composition can at times, make the great composers envious. I miss you Frank, but I'm so glad your music lives on!
Just before going into 'Happy Days are Here Again', Frank says, "Is everybody happy?". That was the catchphrase of 1920s band leader Ted Lewis. Zappa knows his shit.
nice i never picked up on that, lots of little things like that in his shows, during punkys whips (live 76/77) Bozzio says isnt it romantic and then the melody of isnt it romanric from Ella Fitzgerald 1957 is played for a few bars, man he was the best
Chad Wackerman now is considered one of the best five drummers in the world. I saw him with Alan Holdsworth. He is truly excellent. Anyone that played with Zappa had to be. Anyone!!!
When Frank was asked about who influences him he said his own music. But if I had to name a person it would Allan Holdsworth, he's doing really interesting stuff with the guitar.
I was lucky enough to see him (Chad) plays with Alan in Paris New Morning, with Alan Pasqua, wonderfull night, i even talked with Alan a little bit, a really nice guy !
Even though Terry Bozzio is probably his most charismatic and well-known drummer, I always thought that Chad had the tougher gig, especially evident with the '88 band and this show.
Jesus. He was a Full on virtuoso. His grip of timings and Keys and changes pu him up there with the best in all of history. It's not jazz. it's a Symphony. Luv and Peace. Zappa Should be remembered forever. Luv and Peace.
I saw seven Zappa tours starting with Overnight Sensation.......and feel I missed so much. Every tour was unique, amazing, unforgettable. Listening to this makes me feel nostalgic for a remarkable time in music history. Honestly, nobody compares. He was brilliant and he surrounded himself with brilliance. The great bands of his time could put a handful of riffs on an album. Frank could string handfuls of riffs into each piece! He is greatly missed. Thank you so much for posting this exquisite example of his genius.

Epic live performance and I dig the t-shirt. It's a Titties and Beer, isn't it? Very futuristic. I dig the primal aesthetic. But seriously folks: Que un concierto! Thanks, Jorge Navarro.
Fantastic touch by Frank Zappa to learn his introductory speech in a different language. He actually saluted the audience both in Spanish and in Catalan, which shows Zappa's interest in the multiculturalism of the land IMO. Whoever enjoyed this concert back in its day was blessed.
Wow! Been into Zappa for 20+ years but I still discover new things. New arrangements, new takes on songs and so on. So many gems here. Ike Willis, what a legend.
In the 1st part of his solo in "The Black Page", after the single string riffing on the E and A string, I wonder how he did the low (C below E?) tone? He wasn't touching the tremolo bar. Neck bend? Reminds me of Geddy Lee's " Bytor " sound.
I swear... everything Frank played in this performance was amazing! His fingers played that guitar like I never heard him anywhere else. It sounded so polished and visualised.
Thank you so much .. For everyone who took the time to save FRANK ZAPPA'S work. Many years ago i heard that his fault was trying to be saved .A lot of people dont know who FRANK Zappa is but i do. I enjoyed so much music growing up. Living in DETROIT and outside DETROIT was AWESOME. It gave me a LOVE FOR ALL KINDS of music. Franks being just one. Thanks to all that help save the work of a man who wasn't a follower. A one of a kind. That to this day has still not gotten the attention he earned.
He brought rock, jazz, and pop to savant music, as high as classic contemporary music. Genius here. And incredible musicians. Good show, and good sound here thank you.
My Will states that upon my death I wish to have “Watermelon In Easter Hay” played at my Celebration Of Life. If there’s a more beautiful piece of music... I don’t know it.

I am 20 years old as of writing, and Zappa is one of my dad's favorites. I also did a pop culture research paper on him and how much he had contributed to the counterculture movements (which was a lot). The most inspiring thing he did, I believe, was getting young adults educated on registering to vote. This is what America needs to focus on more if they want government to be run OUR way. But I digress, all I am trying to say is that Zappa really did do a lot of things to be hailed a hero on untouched ideas of his time. My generation needs a Zappa. A Frank Zappa.

Seeing Frank 17 times going back to 1972 to 1987 this brings back such good memories.
First heard FZ and the Mothers in Beruit, Lebanon in 1968. The album was "Freak Out," which is exactly what I did. (that big pipe of hash mighta had something to do with it!) Been a freak ever since.😛 Killer version of "Sharleena!"
Playing music 55 years of my life, listening to this brings back the awestruck feelings I had when I first heard The Mothers of Invention!! Sadly I’m not playing anymore but music is still an important part of my life.
I am in the same position, Bro! I can't play much anymore...Good Luck to yoi!
Whoever posted this is a hero.
Sandwich?
A "hero" risks life and limb knowingly to save another human's life. Heroes are not born but sudden and dire events cause a hero emerge from even the most timid. Nobody is brave, we are all scared shitless. The uploader here is more like a Saint, blessing us with the video and making audio improvements

One of the best Zappa live sets that I have ever heard. Having the albums put on CD by a pro audio studio.
Perfect 😍
I saw this tournée 3 days earlier, in Madrid. The best show I ever attended, no doubt about it!
R.I.P. Frank. One of his best bands and an excellent performance and recording. Thanks for posting this.
You´re welcome
Amen 🙏😇😇😇😇😇
La música de Zappa es una celebración atemporal.
I got to know Frank Zappa's work back in 2007 and this guy changed the way I listen to music. Thank you very much, Genius!
Not a sheet of music to be seen but they are able to remember every cord every note of this Rock Orchestration ! Superb . You will always be remembered Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention .
I was just going to post exactly that! :-)It's almost at an unrehearsable level!
Garbage
@@marlon-ih5tc You are obviously not a Frank Zappa fan. If your comment of garbage was pointed at the music nobody here cares.
Zappa was a shit boring ugly clown and his music too
@@marlon-ih5tc You obviously know what a clown is cause mate you are the biggest
I've ever come across. What a wanker !
You wouldn't know one good band from another . Dickhead !
There's no band like Zappa's band. Great music, great musicians. After a Zappa concert you're ready to die... for more!
Sono d'accordo
Gracias, Gracias, Gracias.
Thank you Frank, wherever your at. I turned on a nephew to live in Barcelona. He was blown away. He passed it on to his young friends, and are still out in the cosmos. Now they tune in to F Zappa's University. R.I.P.
a real masterclass in composition and performance. otherworldly genius.
His ability to lift his bandmates to the highest performance level possible is still the most outrageous stage feat ever! Infinity was always lurking inside the band as FZ sculpted it's features. Frank is forever Tops in my Book.
that's because the torture never stopped
Is hard to believe something like this exists.
Zappa knows his shit.
that's a fact, thanks
nice i never picked up on that, lots of little things like that in his shows, during punkys whips (live 76/77) Bozzio says isnt it romantic and then the melody of isnt it romanric from Ella Fitzgerald 1957 is played for a few bars, man he was the best
@@paulbyrnesrmt2929 Alan passed away a couple years ago.
@@Mike383HK yeah I know. Wish I got to see him
I was lucky enough to see him (Chad) plays with Alan in Paris New Morning, with Alan Pasqua, wonderfull night, i even talked with Alan a little bit, a really nice guy !
Zappa forever! 👍
he ll no doublt
FZ passed nigh three decades ago. I've not forgotten him. Never will.
Indeed.
In a way, it’s kind of a jazz opera?
I saw seven Zappa tours starting with Overnight Sensation.......and feel I missed so much. Every tour was unique, amazing, unforgettable. Listening to this makes me feel nostalgic for a remarkable time in music history. Honestly, nobody compares. He was brilliant and he surrounded himself with brilliance. The great bands of his time could put a handful of riffs on an album. Frank could string handfuls of riffs into each piece! He is greatly missed. Thank you so much for posting this exquisite example of his genius.

The ONLY band in the world who pull off playing music that sounds unrealistically impossible to play. By far the best band to ever have existed, pure genius
While this band is certainly on a whole other level, they're by far not the only one or even the most complex/technical one.
@@simons.2281 So, let us in on your secret. Who is more complex/technical in a live setting? I’d love to know so I can have a listen. Thanks.
@@chrisheath594 well said Chris. Hats off to your observations and comment! 🎩
@@absolutelypositively FZ had a career expanding decades. It doesn't matter you start. They're all the best band. FZ's bands had nothing but the best musicians.
@@zombywoof1015 no shit Sherlock. Perhaps you mistook my words. I’ve been a very consistent fan of FZ since April of 1974. Seen several of his bands from 74-88 (14 shows). Met him in of all places a ‘Holiday Inn’ in of all places Baltimore. If you go by the name Zomby Woof then you should know those significance’s. Anyway. I’m on team Frank. For the record.
What I meant was every band he had was the best band.
Qué grata sorpresa, encontrarme con este concierto del maestro Zappa, al que asistí en Barcelona. Grande entre los grandes. Zappa for ever😍
que privilegio haber escuchado a zappa en vivo, debemos agradecer eso si, a zappa , por siempre grabar y cuidar los audios de todos los conciertos que el hacía
Zappa was garbage
Is this the ultimate rock concert? Thank you Frankie!
gracias Garrapata... y larga vida a The Zappaters ❤.. todo lo que no se comparte se pierde
Epic live performance and I dig the t-shirt. It's a Titties and Beer, isn't it? Very futuristic. I dig the primal aesthetic. But seriously folks: Que un concierto! Thanks, Jorge Navarro.
You´re welcome.
Yo estaba en el palacio de los deportes con un gran amigo, capitán,en este concierto.
Se me escapan las lagrimas.
Best Black Napkins performance ever heard! So full, so heavy, so richchch‼️🪐✨✨✨ What an evening!! I haven't been there.
Tuve la gran suerte de oír y ver cuatro días antes este concierto en MADRID (SÁBADO) algo que nunca se olvida
It does get any better than this. Frank's guitar is completely on another level.
In the 1st part of his solo in "The Black Page", after the single string riffing on the E and A string, I wonder how he did the low (C below E?) tone? He wasn't touching the tremolo bar. Neck bend? Reminds me of Geddy Lee's " Bytor " sound.
@@rascalhoudi5689 He might have done a detune? He did it on occasion on other numbers.
I swear... everything Frank played in this performance was amazing! His fingers played that guitar like I never heard him anywhere else. It sounded so polished and visualised.
What a band. What a fine rockin teenage combo,, what a awesome show.. Frank was/is the best. Damn I miss this genius.
The best Zappa live I have ever heard!
Listening to this brings tears to my eyes. The whole show is once again, flawless, and so damn beautiful. Man!
Realy a big mastrepeace
If there’s a more beautiful piece of music, I refuse to listen to it!
Two souls one thought!
But you reallly made it offically in your will.
As for now only my dear wife knows my wish (she has expressed some frustration about this).
Wish you a long life where you peacefully can listen to (maby) the best song ever written!

Emotionally performed, thank you Frank. Our Dear One.
+ 1 here.
Timeless. I always come back to this performance.
"Music is the Best" Truer words were never spoken, nor spoken better than FZ spoke them.
Man, do we miss you Frank.
Neux I was 20 when I saw him for the one and only time in 88 in London. Zappa is unique and unequaled🤗
@@alanday7583 Hey Alan, did you have already at that time the feeling you were in front of something unique and unrepeatable in the History of music and, as we say, a living legend?
Dweezil and his band is a delight.
@@Claytone-Records But they just do the existing music. There are some artists, like John Zorn and Animal Collective, who are as musically creative as Zappa, but don't have much political impact.
Hickory McCay, Some have called Dweezil’s band a cover band. I saw them live and they were so much more. Even George Duke said that D’s band outperformed some of Zappa’s outfits. Have to agree on the political clout aspect, however.
This has been my favorite video for like a month now. And is basically my intro to Zappa . Good god I love this
