"Unreleased DVD"
There was a 3 minute trailer released in the new millennium advertising a Roxy DVD which could potentially contain the footage from all three nights. The trailer was later included on the Baby Snakes DVD as a bonus feature.
Joe Travers has stated that "It's sitting in the vault. Waiting for a budget to do it properly. Basically the film footage, the negatives were transferred by Frank in the '80s using '80s technology. What we want to do is go back to the original negatives and do it in High Definition and then create a 5.1 mix from the original masters so that we have surround sound as well as Frank's 2 channel stereo mix. Once we get all that together, then we need to cut the program. Edit the program together, camera angles, what shows, what we are going to include from what shows or include all the shows. I have no idea what Dweezil and Gail want to do. It's great stuff, but the process of just getting to that point is going to cost a lot of money and take a lot of time." [1] Two songs from the unreleased film ("Montana" and "Dupree's Paradise") were used as opener for the Zappa Plays Zappa concerts in 2006.
On April 1, 2007, Zappa.com unveiled a redesigned website, which included the 30-minute segment from the Roxy performances, which had been used at the Zappa Plays Zappa concerts, on its new videos page.
The clip for "Montana" was included as a bonus feature of the Classic Albums: Apostrophe(')/Over-Nite Sensation DVD, which was released on May 1, 2007.(Wiki)

Frank Zappa didn't live a very long life... but he left us so much !
Thank you Frank !
10-15 years ago, I began listening to Zappa's music in earnest and found myself going deep, I mean REAL deep. I listened to everything I could get my hands on, not just once or twice by ten times through or more. I read books he authored, learned many of his songs and formed a band to play them. And I'm not the fanboy type. Far from it. He's the first artist I've been that enthralled with because Frank isn't just music, he's a way of living: awake and aware, fully engaged, forthright, and a force to behold.
Amen brother. There’s nothing like it. Sometimes I get a little upset that Frank made all other music boring, but then I just listen to more.
he wasnt very aware that smoking is terrible for you
@@meesalikeu Doesn't matter as long as it's not detrimental to your musical abilities :p
@@meesalikeu stop it, what ITF has this got to do with smoking ?
I bet you jump from post to post looking to throw a spanner into the conversations.
I would imagine people think you're a great laugh at parties.
its what happens..
my favorite FZ line up....wow could they play. Tom Fowler should be a better known bassist, the guy is incredible.
If you are still alive 3 years on, I should let you know that I agree. This grouping is just the best with everyone at the top of their game and Tom is the lynchpin throughout on a clean precision with a pick...
The amount of times I have listened to Roxy & Elsewhere is just ridiculous. Fucking love this era.
Same. One of the great concert albums
Paradies!! Unglaublich zum Komponieren und perfekt abzuliefern! There many Frank's Treasueres around!!!
Alex B.
George Duke LIVES. God Bless Him and RIP
"I don't care if you think if it's silly folks I don't care if you think if it's silly folks..."
1973, ...it was 50 years ago.. still fresh, and refreshing.
Best era of Zappa music. early to mid seventies. Apostrophe , Over nite sensation. Brilliant albums. Live at roxy was also a great live album
Zappas Truppe in Stockholm hatte genau solche Klasse wie hier in diesem Film... 🎈
The more you play this piece the more details unfold. It's magic.
Mine, too, for sure! There will never be another even close to his brilliance.
Frank was and still is the " Modern Mozart " on his earth voyage RIP
Beautiful. Humour, Virtuoso musicianship (from the whole band), great songs, love from the audience is still palpable. There has been no one like him and will not be anyone like him, ever. RIP FZ.
Sure, unique People will never duplicate, but there will be others.
So what`s the deeper meaning of your Statement?
Zappa would have thrown you a sarcastic remark, you bet!
At risk of presuming to speak for Paul, I'd say that Zappa was unique in a way that is more unique than most people.
He would have been sarcastic, but I don't care. Zappa was God.
Mambo Bananapatch Nobody is "God" and the least Person to be is Zappa.
He only impresses so many People for one reason:
He played in the wrong league. He had the ability on a classical Composer and played to rock-audiences; he acted like a professional Footballer who preferred to Play in a Team of 12 - year - old - ones.
If you regard it sharply, he was quite a fake.
Hmmm, interesting debate. He had a wide repertoire as a classical composer, an improvisational virtuoso, a rock composer, as an aleatoric electronic composer, as a humourist and a thousand other things.
Is that to say, +BerlinerStadtschlos, that no rock music should be intelligent, or complex?
Personally, I consider most of what he achieved in his work transcended mere genre and definition. Music is a many-splendoured, kaleidoscopic field, Zappa was bold enough to stroke its many feathers, plucking out the ones he liked best.
He was also the most candid and honest commentator on the music industry.
To say he was 'quite a fake' to be raising the bar of expectation of what rock music could/should be and to be making more money from it than he ever could as a classical composer (which he was as well) is quite wrong-headed. though.
It's like comparing coca-cola to Remy Martin; they are for different audiences and different contexts, neither is better. A classical composer is not by definition 'better', anymore than a jazz performer is by definition better.
Rock music, like any genre, despite its constant predilection to regress, imitate and rehash, will always have mavericks like Zappa who push the agenda forward and explore possibilities, dragging their disoriented audience along behind them. We need those mavericks in every walk of life; to imply that he was 'dossing about' just because the rest of the creatives in the sphere he was in were unable to keep up is, frankly, incorrect.
If I regard your comment sharply, you are being a snob.
BerlinerStadtschloss, Zappa was God as I understand him.
This whole debate is stupid. People, including myself, arguing about the correctness of purely subjective opinions, are stupid.
great to see this footage..roxy and elsewhere means a lot to me..got it the day it came out...a classic!!
This really is a classic -- perhaps the best Zappa caught on film? Incredible musicianship... and soul.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Duke
George Duke rocks
The truest thing I’ve ever read
Just ordered Roxy the movie on blu ray. This was his greatest line up in my opinion.Cannot wait.R.I.P. Mr. Zappa.
Who the freak gives this a thumbs down? Fools I tell you, FOOLS!
Billy J. Stiglitz this music is horrible. You have to be a simpleton to enjoy this
Anthony Atrane Like I said later you are a sad troll if you don't understand what is happening in front of your dumb face.
tonewall jaxon wow you are a sensitive old burnout hippie. The 60's are over the past is gone
+Anthony Atrane Sorry the Jonas Brothers aren't opening for him in this video...
Andre Batris You probably have a Jonas Brothers tattoo on you back right next to Frank Zappas face, & a magic mushroom
Losing the maestro Frank Zappa hurt & now the incomparable George Duke has also passed. May they both Rest in Sweet Peace.
Zappa was a genius. Plain and simple.
Incredible. That band could do anything.
Things like this... won't ever happen never more !!!! SUPREME !!!
pour une attente de plus de 10 ans apres c ette video une sortie roxy prevue!!grande periode pour zappa mothers!! merci pour le chargement!!
The best of the best here kids. Silly antics aside, these were some intensely creative players.
I thought I had seen most of the good Zappa footage. Roxy was always my favorite Zappa LP. The clip lately with the wonderful performance with Pamela the dancer was sheer satisfaction. Now this--- starting with Montana, arriving at a disassembled trombone, lots of precision chaos, then a mind bending free jam in 5/8 that is uncountable, and ending with Frank demonstrating how long it takes to get your guitar in perfect tune by playing with Duke on piano while checking all the harmonics on the guitar. What could be better?
This made my night .. Like Zappa quite a lot, never seen live footage.
Napoleon is a talented MOFO. Saw him with the Grandmothers a few years ago. Small venue. It was great.
i love how napoleon always gets a dancing solo in montana
HOLY SHIT! There is three nights of this stuff? What are they waiting for? Realease it ALL. I am not going to live forever. Releas ALL of it!!!!! This is one of the geatest incarnations of franks bands, IMO
This is a brilliant performance! Frank is the man, and his musicians are the best!
This is my favorite Zappa line up, I just wish it kept all the members for a longer period of time. XD
Just missing Ike and Adrian
THE lineup..both Ralph Humphreys and Chester Thompson on drums
Montana & Dupree's Paradize. I love you Frank!!!
There are moments in this that just make me weep with joy and disbelief. So amazing to see these superb musicians moving deftly from the rehearsed to the spontaneous and back again without a hitch. If you've ever picked up an instrument and really tried to play it well, you can appreciate how stunning this is. Sure, great jazz musicians do it all the time. But nobody has the feel of Zappa and his bands -- Was (Not Was) comes close, though.
i love it when zappa collaborated with george duke. the outcome was truly fantastic
RUTH!!!! what a 70s babe!
The Golden Lineup!!!!😍😍😍😍
Well, I've just discovered this, having been an FZ fan for a long time. Everything I discover about him is just mind blowing. Pure genius. And Ruth - oh my god, Ruth!!
Frank Zappa, coolest man ever
"Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny" - Frank Zappa
Saw him in Hawaii, 1970 something. He concert has a beginning, and an end. And seemed not to stop any where in between.
Frank Zappa fan since Freak Out, l like this because their having fun
Band of all bands, night of all nights. How long we have waited for the visual.
Thank you Uncle Remus!!!! R.I.P
One of my favorite things is to see Frank conduct the various bands he's led.
Guitar legend Zappa! That solo shines!!!
Man that is some serious get down boogie I love it thank you I don't know how I caught that but it was very good my name is hootie from Johnstown Pennsylvania loving it no not hootie who d like Rudy just change the first letter of Rudy and replace it with an
Dweezil, I beg you please release the rest of this! Frank wails in Montana! WoW!!
This is my time machine. I appreciate this like you can never know.
I saw this band live on tour. Just mind blowing- sitting and listening in the middle of this sonic soup live was incredible. You never knew what was going to happen next, and Frank’s guitar playing was just brilliant. And, the audience listened in silence and with intention, so as to really hear what was going on.
here I find Duke and Zappa more live than ever, perfect pal
For me his best band.Love you Frank , I always have.
When asked how he would like to be remembered Frank remarked " It's not important to be remembered."
Cracking band! Played with real groove, and handled all the tricky stuff too; just great! Listen to this, then Little Feat and wonder which bands play like this now.
great concert it was.And very awesome .Wonderfull for ever in our hart.
zappa changed my life
George Duke! Amazing artist. Thank you for many happy hours enjoying your creativity!
thats amazing,to see how frank instructs his musicians like karajan.he was a real genius.rip frank.
Thank you Duke. See ya in another time. r.i.p.
Great! Always Great, each time I listen to it for so many years!
Check out the applause when they mentioned Mr. Duke. RIP George, truly one of the greats on keyboards! Thank you for many years of enjoyment.
having just seen Tom Fowler with Project Object a few weeks ago...I can see now he still has the same bass face and shuffle.. this is just an awesome vid in so many ways..the music, the frankenhorn antics of Bruce, the cast of musicians..and fo course just Frank being frank....love this ..thank you!
That Zack Glickman Rockin Teenage Combo really knows how to boogie!
Napoleon on flute is exquisite
Love Duke's clavinet and innovative synthesizer playing; but when he is on that Rhodes, his sense of harmony is truly is something special. Even the comping during the unplanned guitar tuning at 29:28 is great.
A whole new musical world to explore, looking forward to it.
just saw Project Object with Tom Fowler...he was awesome! spending Mothers Day with Tom, Ike Willis, Ray White, Ed Mann, Denny Walley..with Andre..oh yeah! It was a Happy MOTHER'S day indeed!
Excellent, excellent,Rip Mr Duke,Zappa pourra bientôt reformer les Mothers au ciel.
What amazes me is that 10 years seems like a very short amount of time to go from the shy polite bicycle playing novelty act on the 1963 Steve Allen show, to *this.* I guess if you spend your every waking hour working, and you are a genius, that unbelievable metamorphosis might be achieved.
god damn he opens it up with those wah strikes
George Duke makes it so jazzy !! So important for Zappa's music ❤😊😊
cant ever get tired of this.
Really wonderful performance! Great watch
Damn...I have been waiting for this for decades. Thanks for the post.
I love seeing ZPZ but seeing Frank is just amazing.
I hope they get their act together and don't let this stuff get lost like so much great film.
sigh..
32 minutes and 18 seconds of bliss.
Amazing stuff. Brilliant and Bizarre and entertaining as could be !!! With loads of talent from all of them.
had the pleasure of seeing a few of his shows got to see the yellow shark live in n.y.c.
Yes Frank, the frustrations of trying to keep a guitar 'in tune'... thank you for that, I am not the only one, where ever you are Frank R.I.P.
Keith Hall Have we met arf!! zffz
Joepepe lombardo Yes Joe, we've met, I have spoken to you a few times now, remember I was trying to talk to you on Google+ I know you're a huge Zappa fan such as myself! Arf!
Keith Hall Yeah i remember you ever figure it out yet?
napoleon's flute solo went ridiculously hard
One of FZ's best bands. They could do anything. And here they are doing it!
What a trip ! What pleasure for all the senses ! This music is magic, and so well played ! Nothing's been done that can equal the roxy & elsewhere period, in my opinion.
Napoleon once said to me "Hurry up! It's cold!"
True story.
what a guy, what a name!!
Buddy Guy said that to me!
My wife said that to me, so I put it in.
George was the GREATEST !!
Been a Zappa fan for over 30 years now but not seen this before. Shows the best line-up IMHO that gave us some superb music; One Size Fits All being my favourite album. This piece of film is awesome and I thank you for posting it.
FRANK ZAPPA war einfach einmalig!
does humor belong in music? fz lyrics are humorous, witty, intelligent, scathing, different and sometimes down right raunchy in a clever way. the aspect of his art seriously got under some folks skin in good ways for those who love his music.
i play drums and got turned on to him around the time started, i was 12 and was instantly blown away by what i heard, and i'm still blown away by it...this is the work of a true artiste' and a true musical genius, plain and simple.
The Roxy's Bands are my favorite iteration of the band. Absolutely AMAZING!
I would have been spellbound in that theater watching and listening as a 15 year old. The great trombone revolt!
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great performance of George Duke (as usual)! In my opinion the best band FZ ever had, also seems to me the early 70ies the most inspired phase of his creative output. Thanks a lot for uploading ...
This is a treasure. Thanks for posting it for all us demented flossers.
Could not have said it better
🤣
definitely one of FZ best lineups.
An incredible man of many DEVICES!
ahhhhh, just as I had envisioned through my ears for years.
Corey Harrison - smoking the high school diploma
WONDERFUL. THANKS. AND THANK YOU FRANK!!!!!
Frank Zappa simply great!!! thanks for share this concert
wow wow wow... really classic perf, I like the oppopa video a lot due to the live outdoor energy but this one is really classy..
Sad to hear George Duke passed RIP.
