  • This was sold at the garden center as an annual, which, to me, means there is not a lot of long term prospect. My husband took it home since he like special plants. It bloomed (catkins) and leafed out. My husband pruned once while keeping it as an indoor plant. Soon it was obviously stressed. It was placed outdoors under my care since late spring. It grew a lot and gotten to twice the size. This being its first winter, I want to go easy on pruning but still need to tidy things up. This is give a better structure and preserve energy on catkins come spring time.

    Thank you so much for this video. It was by far the most helpful thing I have found. I bought one (somewhat impulsively lol) and was feeling overwhelmed and confused by all the conflicting information I was seeing. Now I know exactly what to do. You rock!

      My husband and I did exactly that, could not resist and took it home! Later I found there is not a lot of info out there. I made the point of posting a lot of videos for others. This is its 3rd year at our house. In case you could not find them. From 2023:

    I saw this tree today and didn't buy it. Too many questions where to put it, ground or pot, etc. Now I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy it because it would be perfect on my patio in a nice large pot. I'll go tomorrow and see if I still love it.

      It saw this in Spring for 3 years and purchased it on the fourth year. Wondered also how to care for, how long would it last etc. My expectation was for it to last 12 months. That was 3 years ago! Hope you will one day enjoy this plant in your patio. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙏🏻👍🏻

    Trying to pay good attention to your work has been difficult due the the amazing song in the background. Lol

    The music is super awesome, but I wish there was description instead….talking us through the process. I love willows, but have no idea what I’m doing, so I need all the instruction I can get! 😂 (Btw…what is the music?)

      Thanks for your comments. I tried narration but did not quite work. Too nervous in a second language plus I live on a noisy street. I respond to question best I can to share my v/gains.
      In the prune before winter, I remove:
      1. dead/weak stems, these are usually brown, no buds or thinner
      2. stems with no future catkins. By November, you can tell the presence of catkins from the bigger/fat buds, compared to leaf buds.
      3. stems that are in directons that I do not like.
      A viewer has given advice on how the cut should be made, closer to emerging buds. I agree with her. Had the previous cut been made better, there would have been less dead pieces. Note, this video was made November of 2021 and the prune prior to that was done by my husband, who was very gentle in his cuts.
      Regardless, the Spring prune is more important than the Fall one. There is a video on the prune I did in April 2022.
      If you have any question, I will help. I know there is very little information out there, since we could not find much when we started out in 2020.

    If you take care about where you cut that limb you won't have that dead piece like what you're doing right now. Where your bud comes on the limb right before that piece is where you want to cut at and you won't have any dead limb. But you've probably figured that out by now.

      What do you mean? I’m a bad willow parent and I’m trying to learn. Can you explain further on that?

    Thank your for this informative video! I just got mine from the store and am excited to watch it grow! Did you repot it after you got it? I noticed a bit of netting in the soil and am debating on whether or not I should take it out. I'm looking forward to more updates!

      Very happy to know that you find my videos informative! It was re-potted to a bigger pot (about 2 inches more in diameter) last spring after it has bloomed out and pruned. Plan to do the same again this year after bloom time. My observation - It loves moisture so try not to let it go completely dry. My pleasure to post and share 🙏🏻😊

    This is great! Hard to believe how much it grows after that early intense pruning! Got my first one a month ago. I should prune it back as intensely as you did after the catkins?

      I felt the same when my husband purchased this last year. I was not expecting it to last at all after bloom time. Here we are with it stronger than ever. I would do the same hard prune after bloom time (still some time away). Actually I plan to prune off a couple of lower branches with hope to encourage top growth. I find it like plenty of sun and moisture. I did fertilize it after new leaves are formed. Good luck to both of us!

    Are the blooms in this willow, fragrant?

    • @GardenNotes
      @GardenNotes  2 роки тому

      They are not fragrant. However, they are pretty amazing to look at and have around. We quite enjoy them.

      Mine just bloomed for me and I thought that they had a light smell of honey, but my sister said that she couldn't smell anything. So they're not the most fragrant flowers out there!

      I am not sure. I bought it at a local garden centre. I will look for the plant tag and see if there is a website that you can inquire. Will get back to you soon

    • @GardenNotes
      @GardenNotes  Рік тому

      Do not know since it came grafted when I purchased it. The plant tag has it as part of the name so I just use whatever is on the tag. Sorry if I have confused you😅

      I have been told it is grafted to the stem of a regular pussywillow.
