  • A very aggressive prune last April. Instruction from my garden center. It bounced back strong and bloomed beautifully this spring.
    This year's prune:
    1. Timing - after bloom and as leaves started to open
    2. Goal - to life the canopy up, or make the plant taller
    3. How - remove lowest branches and all downward stems
    4. Keep - the growth that are aching upwards. New growth will start higher up.
This prune leaves more stems than last year. I do not know how that will impact bloom count next Spring. Will know next year!

Exactly what i was looking for. Thank you!
I didn't believe the instructions when it said cut back to 4 inches.

I know what you mean. I was told to cut back to 2 to 3 inches by the garden center staff where I purchased this from. It worked for 3 years in a row giving very nice blooms. However, there are very few blooms this Spring; but I think it is more weather related than the prune. Good luck with your plant!

I know what you mean. I was in the same place a few years ago. I posted many videos because I could not find any way back. Glad to share my journey! 💪🏻💪🏻🌿🌿

I admit I was a little surprised you took so much. Then I could see how it made sense. Very interesting to watch. Thank you! I have a few different weepers now for the first time ever. And I love this little tree of yours❤

Thank you. When the person at the garden center told me to remove everything but 2 inches, I was surprised too. Last year, I left about 4 inches and things have worked. Hope this year’s will work 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Good job! Unfortunately I didn’t get around to cutting mine back this year and now it looks like a big mess. It grows so wild. The bees didn’t mind all the flowers though.

There is always next year! and it would not matter to the bees! I am learning as I go - there isn't much on line for this plant. Thanks for watching and your comments!!

Hi! I received one as a gift but all of the branches coming from the top appear to be dead. It is now summer and I believe it is too late to prune it back. Are there any suggestions you could provide? Thank you so much!

It needs plenty of sun and water during summer. Try giving it now. By Fall, you will know which branches are still alive. Remove the dead ones and leave the rest till Spring. Then start over with a prune after bloom. Good luck!
When I travel, I come back with yellow leaves in the center too!

Can you use the cut branches to make something, like a basket? And will the cut branches become to dried to bend after sometime do you know? Thanks

I suppose I could if I knew how. I kept them in the shade in case I need to do a small wreath or to weave over something. By the time I threw them out in the Fall, they are still fairly flexible. Pretty sure it would be more so if they are soaked in water for a bit. The branches stay a red color even after cut back. Now you mentioned it, I will keep this in mind and find a good use for these. Thanks! 👍👍

Hello, this video was very helpful! Mine is currently blooming. I’ll wait until the blooms die off, prune sometime in April, then pot up and put outside all spring, summer and fall. Then the next time it will grow in and bloom will be next March again. Is all of this correct? Thanks for your help!

    • @GardenNotes

Yes. That is more or less what I did. during summer, it will have some nice foliage. Remember to keep the soil moist.
This prune worked for 3 years in a row giving very nice blooms the year after. However, there are very few blooms this Spring; but I think it is more weather related than the prune. Good Luck with your plant!

My first attempt to follow instructions. Severe prune.
What happens if it's not pruned so severelt?
      Also, what about fertilizing?
      Video very helpful.
Such a sweet addition to our houseplants.

@@paulettespera7340 the first year we pruned a lot lighter, resulting in is less robust. In fact, the recommendation from the garden center is to prune to 2 inches. About half of what I have. I fertilize it with slow release granular for trees in the past but will try all purpose this year. I have a lot less blooms than previous years. Weather? Or fertilizer? Jensen giving the all purpose a try. Thanks for your questions.

@@paulettespera7340 just noticed you mentioned houseplant. We kept ours indoors for a year and find it prefers to be outside. It likes full sun and plenty of moisture. We have it outside ever since. The lowest temp it has seen is -20C (norm is -12C) I am in zone 8

It's now June can I still trim my little tree back or is it to late?

    • @GardenNotes
      @GardenNotes  Рік тому +2

It blooms on new wood. From a flowering perspective, it is not too late. But given this prune quite aggressive, the weather may be not optimal for it to bounce back. I suggest (your call) to cut & leave the branches slightly longer. Would leave alone if the day time high is above 25C. Good luck. Let us know how things go!💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

I have something eating my willow, what do you recommend to spray it with? Also I didn’t cut back after blooming because I didn’t know I was supposed to. My willow got all kinds of leaves and now in June some of my leaves are dying. Any recommendations or is this normal?

    • @GardenNotes

I spray with insecticidal soap for any issue I have in the yard. It is safe for environment and animals. It is borderline now to prune. If you want, you can do it. Worst case is you loose next years flower.

The leaves dried up and dropped one year while I was away for a bit. It needs plenty of consistent moisture over summer

This video covered both your issues. I trimmed off the dead leaves for aesthetic reason. No real benefit. You can see it already sprouted from the node where the dead leaves are. Hope this helps. I know there is not a lot of info out there 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
