  • The Tree of Enchantment (Salix caprea pendula) is a beautiful, grafted bonsai specimen. This means that this tree does have certain specific requirements that could be a little hard to take care of for the new grower. Be sure to watch the entire video, as I dig into what it takes to keep this tree alive! Thank you for watching!

    This is an amazing plant. You can watch it flower in slow motion. I bought one for fun with 40 or so buds on it and it loves sun. Only took 3-4 days to bloom. Start out white and end in a pink Hugh and large pollen sacks coloured yellow.

      Don't mention it. These guys can definitely require a lot of attention especially when it comes to both light and humidity. It can be a bit much but once spring hits and those catkins come into bloom, it is definitely all worth it. If you can put up with their fussiness and manage to prune them avidly they make a nice bonsai specimen.

      Lol, I know, and I still had some more that I wanted to say. Had to trim it up a little I guess. There's really so much you do need to know to not only keep your plants happy but also thriving. Most ppl just think light, water, and tempeature. I reckon that little bit right there will get you through with most plants. I'm sure I do rumble though, kind of like what I'm doing right now. It's potted & the dirt is smelling kinda off now, so hopefully I can give it a happier batch of dirt & perk it up. Idk though! It's lost all of its leaves & catkins... I purchased mine from the grocery store in Southeastern coast of SC and it was dry. That afternoon I put water in it and the next afternoon it had fully bloomed and 2 afternoons later sprouts of green leaves on it's branches going crazy like a wild hairdo. I give it partial sun on my screen porch it is thriving so I think it's enjoying its home so far. I pruned all up turning growths to the base of where they're growing out of the branch and left three little leaves from where they sprouted on each branch. it's probably not the right way to do things but it made it look less bald and it's gorgeous.

    I have 3 dwarfs that I planted outside & so far they’ve done well - the branches grow an insane amount, especially with a higher nitrogen fertilizer (miracle grow all purpose), but the trunk doesn’t get any taller. I am in zone 6B in east central PA. Our winters are typically below freezing temps, but rarely goes below 0°
    These look better in large planters than in the ground. The ones in the ground everyone calls “cousin It plants”
    I just got a 6ft weeping pussy willow now to replace the dwarf in my front yard. Dwarf is going into a planter

    Great video. Question. After mine flowered and then turned green with leaves, I planted it outdoors in late April. It is now late May and there are no leaves at all. It looks like dried sticks and it went dormant. What happened and why do I do?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 роки тому +2

      So I had this same problem. I know they like a decent amount of water, so I had to adjust my watering schedule just a little. On hot enough days (days over 100°) it wasn't uncommon for me to water him three times that day. What I ended up doing was pruning back the dead leaves pretty aggressively. I think he had maybe three good leaves left once I finished. He bounced back but it was a little rough. You have to be careful though because they like ok light, and if you prune them back liberally they don't have the leaves to photosynthesize and make food. This can stress them out and potentially kill them with too much light.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 роки тому

      Typically all willows like to be around a lot of water i.e. ponds, lakes, and rivers. However if you have the same one that I did in the video they are a smaller sized tree and could drown fairly easily. If you do try and mound up the soil as best as you can to try and keep your tree more up on a hill.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  5 років тому

      I really don't know an exact amount but substrate that has about 30 to 40% clay in it makes for healthy loamy soil. When in pots though I'd stay closer to 30%. And yes I do mix some clay in with some of my substrate for my clay loving plants.

    My mother just bought me Salix Caprea Pendula what a beautiful plant! I need to be educated on it so I don't kill it and interested in keeping contained as a bonsai. I have a pond and would like to put it by it, but thinking I should keep it in a pot, but as it grows may need to put in a larger pot. I would be worried about the roots because if I plant it outdoors by the pond, I not sure where the pipes are exactly. We have a septic tank which is a good distance from our pond. I found your information to be very informative. My question is would you suggest me keeping in a pot?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  5 років тому +4

      I know, this tree is very unique (with it's foliage) and just sleek and all around pretty. With bonsai, it can be tricky. Never forget that you are dealing with trees, grafted so they probably have a little bit of wild in them. I don't mean like an animal but they have been used to being wild for hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of years. Some trees do just fine confined in a container and receiving dappled light and some (even the exact same species) just wither up and die.
      The very definition of bonsai is keeping these (even wild) trees small. You can leave your tree in a pot, just about forever, but there will be a little bit of maintenance to ensure it stays alive and well and small. Not only do you need to prune the tree above the soil but below it too. If you keep a tree in a small pot for several years the roots will grow and wrap around the pot several times and could end up killing the tree. I had a bonsai, a trident maple, a tree that is very popular with bonsai. I had it about 2 almost 3 years when it started losing leaves. I tried everything to try and keep it alive. One day I planted it in my side yard with intentions of fattening the trunk up. Its been about a year and leaves are already coming in this spring.
      My point is you can do either, but in a pot it may take a little up keep to keep it happy. As far as not knowing where your pipes are I would suggest calling your local agriculture board or 411 to have someone come out and identify where they all are if you do plan to plant it. The roots can take off and really cause damage if you aren't for sure.

Which I did and now I think i should not have. There’s no long branches downwards anymore :(. I thought it was dying but I just kept watering it. Now a year later, i am starting to see it bloom very slowly. I’m starting to see the white cotton looking blooms. The branches are extremely short now...will it grown new one? Or an I stuck with the short branches I left? Please help

      Nope you did just fine. Pruning is a great way to make just about any tree "bush" out. I took mine out of its pot and placed it in the ground to help thicken up its trunk. As long as you see new growth and new blooms your plant is doing just fine. They don't put out new blooms if they aren't happy and healthy. Truth be told these aren't the best trees for bonsai. It can be done, but they are very particular about their light, water and humidity, more so than the average person can provide. However it seems like you are doing just fine. Let me know if you end up having anymore questions.

    Would they do well inside with only artificial light and a constant temperature of 69-71 F and keep the soil extremely wet? Would it grow well in only water growing out of the top of an aquarium?

      Don't give up on it yet. I can't tell you how many trees I've had that I would have sworn we're long dead, and a month or two later I see one leaf pop out. Now, I can tell you nothing produces green leaves quicker than actual sunlight. Can you sit him outside? Grow lights can sometimes do it in a pinch but for trees, you need great grow lights. I use spider farmer LEDS that I get off Amazon, and those will only get a tree so far. Trees should always be outside, they're trees and they typically need a bunch of light. Obviously, I don't mean your tropicals need to be out during the winter if you live up north.
      If you are able to you should sit him outdoors. Now, trees need an established cuticle (the covering over the entire plant that protects it from the environment and especially direct sunlight). Until the cuticle is well established you need to keep him in partial shade until you do see new growth. I'm talking very bright shade. If you throw him directly in the sunlight for a while you'll kill any bit of life he has in him. He's very stressed and you don't want to stress him any further. Water accordingly and don't feed anymore. Keep me updated and let me know if you have any more questions. You can email me at ytgreenalchemist@gmail.com if you wanna get ahold of me more quickly.

    How big will this tree get, if planted outside and left unpruned??

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 роки тому

      Depending on location and nutrients and environment it could get to 6ft maybe 7 ft if conditions are right. They can have up to a 8 foot spread. I think they can live for about half a century too. In fact, planting outside is the best way to thicken up your trunk too.

      @@TheGreenAlchemist Thank you so much for the information --- gives me a better idea where to plant it. Right now, it's only about 18" high, but we want it to grow to 6' or more!! It will be next to our lake, nice and moist, in full sunshine. We plan to build a wire cage around it, as we have a resident Beaver, who ate the last tree I planted!! Thank you again!

    Hi! I am hoping to possibly get some answers from this comment. I purchased one of these the end of January. I noticed the soil is very hard when it dries out so I have been trying my best to keep it moist. The roots do look overgrown so I am hoping to be able to replant it in a bigger pot ASAP. To my "issue"... the tree was in full bloom when I purchased it. All of the calixes bloomed, and fell and I got new green branches that shot upward. I have read in several places to cut them back as it will make the tree *un-bonsai*, so I did this. Well, most of the ends of the original branches were turning dark brown and are becoming harder and easy to snap, so I pruned most of them back. I am still having the same issue with no new growth. I am unsure what to do at this point. Do you know any reason for the branches doing what they are doing? Should I maybe just prune them all back? Thank you so much if you can get back to me. I cannot find anything about this anywhere. Also, I just want to add that it is not the fungal issue that I have seen and the darker parts are at the ends of the branches and it doesn't rub off.

      Yeah so if you notice the pots they put those trees in are tiny. Also the substrate isn't meant to feed them well or even have much nutriental value at all. It's mainly there to help keep the plant upright. Unfortunately by the time we get them they don't have much in their systems and they've sat in stores or just out of the sunlight for God knows how long. What you should do is get a good sized pot at least 8 or a 10 in pot. Get some good reputable substrate that you like or ones meant for bonsai trees. They really enjoy a decent amount of water so get a substrate that drains well too. A lot of people think that putting rocks in the bottom of the container can help with drainage too. I dont agree with that. If you do that the rocks will cause the soil to clump up and coagulate in the bottom of the pot thereby impeding the water from flowing out freely. If you want to add something to help with drainage then make sure you add in pumice, builders sand or perlite. When you go to repot it make sure you trim back the roots some too to give your plant plenty of room to stretch out and grow. As a general rule of thumb you can remove about three quarters of a plants roots without hurting them. Make sure you sanitize your tools before you cut on the tree. Now I say all this but if you look these plants up on the internet there arent a ton of pitchers of them as potted plants. Reason being is they aren't the best trees to be in a pot. I actually put mine in the yard to help it thicken up its trunk and put on some mass. As I said earlier they do enjoy a good amount of water and humidity. Typically they'll get more of this outside because in our homes especially during the winter we keep them hot and bone dry. This in turn dries them out fairly quickly. Now you have to be careful because most people see all this and they try to over compensate with fertilizer. They do well with fertilizers like bone meal and fish emulsion. Now if outside they rarely need to be fed but indoors they need to be fed at least every other month or so. Now if you repot yours don't feed it for a little bit. Most substrates will feed for a couple of months. If you get in a pinch all purpose well balanced fertilizers work well too. Just don't go overboard because too much fert will cause salts to build up and choke out your tree. Now with light they do enjoy full sun and they won't get that indoors. I'd say they need about 5 or 6 hours of direct sunlight. You need to introduce them into the sunlight slowly cause you can fry up those tiny leaves. I'd say the reason the branches are doing this is due to the lack of humidity/water and the right amount of light. Let me know if you have anymore questions or concerns.
