- I change the wick in this corona kerosene heater. I talk about adding wick conditioner and how to make your wick last longer. I also included some commentary about what not to do and common mistakes I made. This was an older convection type heater with a 3 pin wick. Always wait 60 minutes and dont pour anything onto the wick.

Finally a REALISTIC video showing the real problems that happen when you change a wick!!!
I'm so glad i came across your video it really helped me out thank you so much for taking the time to make this video it was my first time changing the wick you helped me do it correctly THANK YOU !!!!!
I let mine set overnight before I light, when I can wait that long. Works great. On mine I put the wick all the way up before I re-install it and make it go up and down a few times and test the auto-shut-off several times as well. Seems to make it easier for it to take the tightness out of it.
I bought one of these because many years ago when i was in Korea i remember everyone using them as the main heat in their apartments. I am amazed at how complicated our units are. So fussy about what fuel you use in them. So particular about adjustments to get them to burn clean and not ruin the wick. I have a hard time believing the Korean units were this complicated to operate and maintain but i will research it. I think american companies are just trying to sell 10 a gallon fuel and 10 dollar wicks. I decided to go propane.
Excellent!!! I get suspicious of all the uneventful, perfectly executed do-it-yourself videos!!!! This is how real life fixes go. Honesty is refreshing. Thanks.
I love that you did not edit out the parts that didn't go as planned! When I replaced my wick for the first time last year, I was terrified, but there was no one else to do it, so I had to. It went well, but not nearly as smoothly as it did for the person in the video I was watching, even though I followed the steps precisely! Since I am using this as my source of heat again this winter, I got it all ready, got new kerosene, and it burned beautifully yesterday. Today, even at the wick's highest setting, the flame would not go above the edge. Thinking it may be bad kerosene and I may be facing another wick replacement! Not fun, but it heats the house so much better than my electric heater. :)
Are you turning it off or letting it burn out? Letting it burn out may help. Or it may have condensation in the tank and needs a wick. I always store mine full.
Thanks for including your mistakes in the video. I probably would have made the same ones if I hadn't seen you make them.
I doubt you would have
I had the same trouble with the wick an saw your video went home did it in the raised position an 1st try and it worked Thank you!
Not boring, don't hate you :-) Finally someone with a video with a wick with pins, most other videos feature wicks without the pins but barbs instead. Great help Joe.
Joe, you're awesome. I've been battling by new kero heater for the last 6 weeks. I really wish I'd watched your video before using mine for the first time. Like an idiot I missed the part about soaking the wick for an hour before lighting. So of course I ruined my first wick by lighting it immediately. Then I had the joy of installing a new wick with only the crappy manual to go off of. I really enjoyed the parts of the video where you get pissed off. . . I've been there brother!
I ruined a few wichs too
thank you
Omg I've been looking for someone to post this issue for the last hr. I've replaced wicks many times , no issue, 10 min flat, this time 2 1/2 hrs 5x putting it in and the knob wont turn. All pins set, when I take it off the dual pulls up the wick but wont stay up by itself . When I put it back , mind u on a full tank, it wont turn again. Same friggin issue so I'm going to try again tomorrow. I left it assembled, not turning at the moment to keep the fuel contained n safe . I was too frustrated to continue. Hopefully I can hold the dialn put it together at the same time alone tomorrow. Thank you for showing this issue it saved me from trashing this one n buying new!! Which mine is only a yr old lol but I've had many all my life .
That really should be done when it's 10 below in a drafty shed with a flashlight. It makes the final reward so much sweeter. If you have to mess around enough, the wick is saturated and ready to light by the time your fingers quit working. Don't ask me how I know this.
Great information, good video.
were you able to do the replacement on yours after watching this? how did it go?
Update: I waited until the next morning to light it. It works awesome!
had same prob lower ring has catches on it as well to hold wick needed slack
Got a used one for 20.00. Wick for $12 shipped, get a british wick, the japanese wicks don't work as well with marginal kero, on the other hand, you should only use clear k-1 grade, so japanese wicks are ok. let sit 30 minutes before firing up. only store fuel 30 days and with conditioner if longer. get a CO monitor! like a smoke alarm. Will save you massive 2 day headache and nausea! Was a 5 minute job to install wick, once disassembled.
it is a pain!!.... 100yrs from now someone will come across this video and laugh like we do at the guys who used to crank their cars to start them.
I get a pin in and set then move to the next and CRAP! It comes out! I get all 3 pins in then go to put it onto tank assembly CRAP! It comes out! What a pain in the ass, finally got it but it's no picnic doing this job. I feel like I need more hands while replacing the wick.
Mr. Kitty I don't look forward to doing it again
heh that was pretty good you were all like .. hey it went right back together.. .. then .. heheh and you get it working and lose the wingnuts and as soon as you say i can't find the wingnuts you tip your rag on over top of them.. ah still .. you got it done in under 20 minutes and hopefully it lasts a while.. i would always suggest that the first time you fire it up you do it outside .. good job
i do a dry burn after each tank full of fuel, i am one that don't burn cerosene.... i been burning RUBY DIESEL FUEL for the past 5 years.. and some heaters can tolerate it, some can't/// i do change them all once a year.........but not hard to change wicks...
does that smell? the red fuel?
Great video. I need to be honest with you, I learned more from your mistakes than I would of if it went without a hitch. Sometimes when people leave or edit out mistakes it does a disservice to those whole have them! I really appreciate you not doing that!
Tell me, did you eat paint chips when you were a kid? Kidding! I enjoyed the video. You making mistakes just proves you are very human.
I did not eat paint chips but i did play with lead. Glad you enjoyed it! thanks
Mfer said "uppest" position😂😂😂
Not to worry kerosene is harmless. You can drink it as medicine. All purpose stuff. Smells good too.
I knew a guy who used to freeze dry it and smoke it to get rid of colds.
Thank You for the Video, I have a Question I'm a novice, how long does the wick burn or can I increase the amount of heating time ? In other words how long does it last from point A to B should a full tank last a week or is it every other day? Maybe I'm doing something wrong ,Just asking a question .Thank You very much and God speed
I fill mine every 8 hours or so
heres a really big hint start from the bottom where the black line is
Hey Joe.. I got my kerosene heater last year. It was used for like 6 months, but not continuously.. pretty much just at night and on weekends. What should I do this season? I've used it just a few times, and Ive had to light the wick manually, with a lighter. I've never had to do this before. I really don't want to tackle changing the wick out, unless it's an absolute necessity. What would you do if you were me? :) Would I be okay to just put some of that kerosene stuff in the heater? wish you had a link to where we could get that "stuff"... LOL. You should put up an affiliate link.
Well done..
are cotton wicks available? Are cotton wicks better? Do you put additive in every tank or just end of season?? Since the world knows very little about anything especially fuel, if I go anywhere and ask them for the "stuff" to put in kereosene....they might call cops and charge me for solicitation. What is the "stuff", called?
Gives me the impression that shouldn’t be that awkward to change…
I dont do it often enough to be smooth! Have you done one yet? was it easier for you? I find them annoying, on top of the awkwardness there is the bad smell
Hey Joe just changed my wick and see no kerosene where the wicks sits. Been waiting for 3 hours still not wanting to light. How does the Kerosene get into that area with the wick. Do you think i have a clog?
it travels up threw the wick. it the wick pulled down into the fluid?
joeseif ok..we took it apart again..this heater was in the shed for a for years..it looks like the hole that the kerosene comes out of from the tank was clogged..we grabbed some pipe cleaners and unclogged it..now kerosene is coming threw to where the wick sits
If it's an old wick it mite have a clogged tarr build up in between the top neck of the were the wick rises out of just below the 1/4inch riseout of the wick . That is we're the wick gets fed with kerosene. It has to be soak and saturated for at least too hours new and after burn of cleaning once a week.
i dont know maybe it in wrong and too tight for the wicking or the bottom part is above the fuel
Ok I have a heater where the wick was replaced but now when it adjusted it doesn't work right.. any tips on what might be wrong??
the pins are not set right, try taking it apart and resetting the 3 pins in the wick
joeseif thanks I am gonna let it run out of fuel and try that.. I will update tomorrow and let you know if it worked..
I prefer the pinless wicks!!! kerosene heaters, for one reason, i burn DIESEL FUEL not kerosene, so i can get full use out of the wick.
diesel fuel in less refined than Kero how does that help you get longer life? doesnt that smell bad?
doesn't smell bad at all, kerosene is just WORTHLESS OVERPRICED CRAP. diesel fuel does last longer, i use only perfection heaters they can tolerate the diesel better then the type of heater you have.
What was the bottle of additive that you held up?
Kero-Klean kerosene fuel treatment for kerosene heaters I got it at a local hardware store
one bottle is good for 80 gals
attempted this today , 3 hrs later taking it out and putting it back in , cant get the wick to go up n down
make sure the pins are in the correct spot
FINALLY GOT IT, THANKS
reassemble with the wick in the up position ... that was the only mistake
What prevented the wic from coming up the 1st try?
When the wick is new and dry; it binds. Do like he did and pull the thing off the mandrel and turn the wick all the way up. Now while holding the knob fully clockwise; pull the wick over the mandrel and lower the burner assembly. This will take a few tries before the wick stretches and will move freely. I tried for 2 hours with a dry wick and no luck. The wick has to be wet and; it has to be massaged/stretched or it'll never be able to move.
can I have e the link to get the wick
I watched this a few times & bought the wick with the 3 pins & that was a trip getting them all to stay in. After that, I moved it down into the tank but the wick won't come up. I've tried 5 times now & I still can't get the wick to rise up while turning the knob. Don't have a clue what I'm doing wrong? I even cleaned off all the carbon & wiped it down with a lean dry cloth. Have any ideas? All the pins are in the slots & hole but it doesn't rise up. Called a few month ago for someone else to do it & they charge $150! If I had the money I'd buy a new one.
when slipping the wick down it needs to be in he up position
I have the same Corona 23DK. The pins sit into the sleeve, but they also need to be aligned with the angled slots in the ring that adjusts the wick. Pull the sleeve all the way up or down, and you will see the slots. They sit at a 45 degree angle.
be sure to hall that heater to the dump, because thats where it belongs!!!
