I’ve been using the Winchester 3 inch for years now and I love them! Factor in the price and the way the TSS knocked your shoulder out of socket. Winchester all day for me!

Well, I have an 1100,1300, 870, 500, and an 88 and all of them are 12 gauge and are decked with long beard xr chokes. Nothing else compares. That choke and the Winchester Long Beard XR in 3 inch 5 and 6 shot are lethal to turkey. I’ve used every imaginable choke over the years and every imaginable shell. I’ve fallen for the fads, I’ve tried the newest and hottest about EVERYTIME they’ve come out but nothing touches the long beard combo. I’ve used the 3.5” and it’s just my opinion that there is absolutely no need to go about a 3”. Back in the 1970’s and 1980’s I bagged mani turkey with Winchester Super X 2.75” 5 and 6 shot. The new ammo doesn’t kill them any deader than before… they just allow us to extend our range. Even a 7 shot short brass will work at 20 and under. It’s not rocket science.

I am shooting an original Mossberg 835 with a Hastings turkey choke. I use Winchester Longbeard XR 3.5 #5 and have had great success. A few years ago I was having a tough season and took a shot at a tom that I thought was about 50 yards out in a weedy field. I couldn't get a range on him with the rangefinder due to the weeds. He dropped like a load of bricks. It turned out to be 72 yards. If I had known that, I wouldn't have shot, but that is how it goes sometimes. I still believe in 50 yards max no matter what you use. I haven't tried TSS for the simple fact as to what it costs.

I DID THE EXACT SAME THING WITH A LASER MEASURED DISTANCE OF 72 YDS. I STALKED THESE BIRDS AND CAME UP OUT OF A CREEK BED AND THEY HAD MOVED INSTINCTIVELY AS THEY WERE WALKING AWAY IN A CUT CORNFIELD I SHOULDERED MY SCOPED REM. 11-87 PULLED THE TRIGGER BANG DOWN. TOOK MY VORTEX LASER RANGEFINDER FROM WHERE I SHOT 72 YARDS BUT I AM NOT RECOMMENDING SHOOTING AT THAT DISTANCE. IT WAS A REFLEX SHOT 50 YARDS AND UNDER IS PREFERRED. I HAVE MOSSBERG A 20 .20 GA SAME CARLSON LB WINCHESTER LB COMBINATION THAT IS ALSO DEADLY.

Every turkey I've ever killed has been with lead loads, they have never failed me. I've failed as the shooter at time's, I can't justify spending that much $ on a single shell.
They may work great for some, but my Longbeard xr's work great for me. Not to mention every bird I've ever killed has been with #4 shot, never done me wrong out of my 20 year's of turkey hunting.
This year I'm going to give Longbeard xr #6 a shot as well, I've still got plenty of my #4's if I'm not happy with the results of the #6's. We shall see, but at the end of the day I'm just thankful to the Lord for giving us another turkey. God bless to all my fellow hunter's & have a blessed season!

I can tell u why that happened. A 655 is too tight for that tss load. I’ve experienced that with my Jebs 650. Went to an Indian Creek 665 and that tss, no matter what brand performs like a champ. The 650 with longbeard was very good though.

Awesome video I use both. But you can't bet the long beards. Shoot a bird at 65 yards through light brush. Number 5 3.5. I prefer the tss it pentatrates better and had better knock down. But I can buy the long beards and don't cry. I'd love see the same test done on ballistic gel. Shooting a rem 870 ultra mag. 3.5. Federal tss 7 and 9 shot.

LBXR's are the absolute best lead load on the market to date. Will never go wrong with those.
With a little research TSS #9 paired up with the right choke for your gun, will throw a basketball to beachball size pattern at 40 yards. My 301 410, paired up with a Patternmaster Code Black Turkey. Shooting Rogue or Apex Turkey Ninjas is ridiculous. In my trial and error with the wife's Benelli M2 20 ga, her gun throws a nasty pattern with the Jebs Headhunter and Rogue. Her gun will blow out the pattern on a stacked load. I'm not a %100 sold on stacked TSS loads just yet, only because I have yet to find a choke tube that I can get the pattern I want out of her gun. I have the Avian X crusher on order to test and see how that does. In my opinion, what TSS has done for the sub gauges is off the charts. I may never take a 12ga into the turkey woods ever again.

That .655 will shoot #9 tss pretty well. You'll need to go up to a .665 or .670 to tighten up the pattern with tss 7s, 7.5s, or 8s. One exception I can suggest, from experience, is the Apex Smalltown blend (7.5s over 9s), and they will shoot very very well through your choke. Like, you're going to need a red dot or scope, kinda very well. Just my 2 cents. Enjoyed the vid.

I have SXP 3.5 and going to use the Winchester Long Beard XR #6 , 3" and using a .640 choke. Like you mentioned, all shotguns have different backbores and chokes, so what ever is the best ammo for your turkey gun.

.655 probably over choking the tungsten but the XR pattern isn't a joke. In my 22" barreled 1300 I'm running a .662 hevi choke hand load 2oz 8x9 and it does very well. I have the factory .670 choke in my 18.5" 1300 and running 1 3/4oz of 8x9. Shooting full size contractor paper would help see full pattern density too.

Benelli supernova. Had it drilled and tapped. EGW rail, tru glo red dot. Primos Jelly head choke. Winchester long beard xr 3 inch 6 shot. At 15 yards its basically a slug. At 40 yards that bird has no chance. Insane setup. Ya welcome...

Ahhhh, my man! I've been shooting the same 1300 for 39 years, and even though I have many turkey setups, I still love my 1300 the best, and it outshoots all the others. With LBXR 3" #6 through a Jebs .650, or Apex #8 through an I.C .665, the ole girl is lights out at distance some would consider unethical.

I shoot a .665. And the Longmeadow shoot better. However. Apex 31/2 #9 sill put 130 in the head and neck at 45 yards. So, how dead you want him ? 80 for TSS. 5 shells. Or 30 for Longbeards #6 , 10 shells? I bought 2 boxes of Longbeards at the prices of 5 TSS.

  • @krm944
    @krm944 Рік тому +4

Good video but testing method was poor. 1- you need a very large target - about 48” square. 2- you need a bench/rest. 3- Number of hits in vitals is irrelevant- if you have a pattern that is 6” left of bullseye where the core/density is highest, your method doesn’t identify this. 4- using just a bead front sight ability to induce point of aim errors increases. 5- Ballistics/penetration of TSS are superior to lead. 6- Lead has its place and has killed countless turkeys. 7- TSS enables the 410/28 to be as lethal or more than the 12/10 with less weight, less recoil. Single 410s can be as light as 3.6 pounds and kill further than ethically condoned.

TSS has more energy but they don't pattern as well as lead. I've never seen a TSS pattern past 55 yards meanwhile I've seen plenty of people pattern 3.5" XRs out to 70. Plus they still punch through a tuna can at 70 yards so there's no point in getting heavier pellets.

I've HANDLOADED my turkey loads for over 50 years and at 70 METERS, from a Remington Model 1100 with a Cutts Compensator Full choke tube and a 2 3/4" 1 1/2 oz "Baby Magnum" polyethylene buffered copper-plated Lawrence "Hard Shot (high antimony)" in #4's pattern 100% into 7" at 70 meters, and take "Tom's" head OFF! #2's are the max size allowed in OK, but don't give the pellet count or pattern density consistently. I use Peter's Blue magic shells, Win AA wads Win 571 powder Win 209 Mag primers 1225 FPS. I use an antique Weave Red Dot sight on Public Land, and if the idiots don't scare the birds off trampin' around after daylight, I get dinner. Largest Tom I ever brought home was 19 1/2 pounds. Over on the Osage, there are 22-26 pound Toms up in the hills, but those are "camp-out" birds, and I'm too old to cover the country at 70 and had strokes. Once, standing in the middle of the highway, I swear I saw a close to 30 pounder strutting across the road! He may have been a domestic/wild hybrid-had a beard...
