I'm from Oulu and I have been watching your videos because I am interested in how someone from abroad experiences my city and Finland in general. Nevertheless, I have always considered the main audience of these videos to be your friends and family back home in the US, so I feel it is a priviledge to be able to watch the content you put out here. We Finnish are very blunt, which may seem rude or unfriendly. Small talk doesn't exist, so if you start by saying "hi, how are you", people might start to actually tell you how they are. If you say to a cashier "hi, how are you", they will probably be very very confused (as to why a stranger would ask you how they are :D ). Communicating in english (not your native tongue) can be scary and it might take some people a few minutes to be comfortable to speak english. I have to speak english maybe 4-5 times a year and it takes some minutes to get used to it, as I don't have to speak it frequently. We also learn British english in school, so some words are different. Also try to dum down your english, if you feel people don't understand you. I lived in Italy for a while and had to drastically change how I spoke because otherwise, they wouldn't understand me. I just made my sentences shorter and didn't use complicated words. All this is said with kindness and I hope you don't misunderstand me.

As a Finnish man I could say that we Finns are too shy to speak English to native English speakers cos we think that we make errors. Majority of us speak fluent English or atleast understand what you say. In Finland we don't have small talk and our mentality is really introvert, and when you combine a foreign language to that it may seem that we don't understand.

Hi, another Finn here. UA-cam recommended your video and I just binge watched all your Oulu vlogs :D You have a fun personality, I really enjoy these videos. I think why we're so eager to point out "mistakes" is because we always get excited when Finland is mentioned abroad and if someone comes here we really wanna know what they think of us and our country. We have these sayings like "Suomi mainittu", "torilla tavataan" / "torille" whenever our small country is mentioned abroad, and we get kinda sensitive about being presented correctly, and it gets a bit ridiculous sometimes. Like we are very proud of our clean nature and clear water and so it feels like a crime if someone shows they're drinking bottled water instead of tap water on the internet. People might get the wrong idea!! x'D I know it's easy to say, but try not to take it personally. I hate that you get negative comments, I guess it’s best to just try to ignore them. But tbh I was a bit surprised when you said that people don’t speak English here, because almost everyone I know speak it fluently, but then again I guess it really depends on who you hang out with. I guess some older people for example might speak very little English or just don’t want to speak it? I like that you share your experiences and opinions openly even if you’d sometimes say stuff that some people don’t necessarily like or agree with, it’s still much more interesting. Hi, I totally understand what you were saying at the end. I'm a Finn, and I've studied abroad twice, once in the States for a year. It's tough in the beginning, you're alone, everything is new and odd and just more difficult because it's different. But I think you seem to be doing great! You seem so sweet and sensible, and I think your personality (in the limited way I can observe) fits well to those of Finns and to Finland, you honestly seem a bit Finnish to me:D. Don't mind the rude comments (I saw one idiotic one in this video), I really enjoy your content! A travel tip: Visit Turku before you leave. It's IMO the most beautiful city in Finland, and different from Helsinki or Oulu, you will love it!
Those electric locks are sometimes frustrating. You just have to put it in at right speed. If you put it too fast or too slow, it doesn't read the electric code inside. Sometimes I use 5 minutes to get door open XD I would like to hear your odd experiences, culture shocks, funny mistakes and anything that you find different in here. And don't think that people are necessary mad when they comment your videos. Our english is limited and may sound rude or too straightforward. Also it is how we speak to each other in casual way. We are blunt to the core and our language doesn't have word like "please" for example. So sorry if I sounded rude with my water bottle comment :(

It's fun to watch someone in Oulu for a change, so many YT channels are about Helsinki when foreigners come here. :) And dont worry about those negative comments. They are often made by people who have never themselves been in your situation. I remember being an exchange student in the US as a Finn and definitely know how it feels to suddenly have the most basic things in life change. Like how and where to drink water or how the showers work. :D I personally think you're being very respectful even when you voice out your concerns. Not everyone can do what and maybe that is why some Finns react over the smallest things, we are pretty used to some foreigners being like "boo Finland is so weird, why is life like this here :(". But you're not like that. :)
Paula H. L. - Hi, thank you so much for the comment and for being so understanding and kind! I’d love to hear about your time as an exchange student in the US as a Finn. 😊
I love your vlogs, they're really chill and interesting to watch. People in the US tend to buy a lot of bottled water which is not so common in Finland, so some people might get triggered. It's just one of our values, I guess, because we are more focused on the climate change and all that but don't worry people being stupid sometimes and the bottles are recyclable so it's not that bad. Also, when you get to know people better, the friendship is in most cases stronger than in the US. Keep exploring and learning, you seem really nice and I'm glad you truly wanna learn the Finnish language and get to know the culture!
Hello hello! I'm from Helsinki (living now close to Oulu) and I'm glad you loved the vibe at Helsinki! Next time you visit Helsinki, go to Seurasaari (if possible, in the summer) and Kesäranta! They both are pretty places and has lots of nature in the middle of the city. Viikki's area has lots of nature too!
If you visit Helsinki again, you should download the HSL app. You can buy a public transport ticket (AB zone) and drive around in a tram, bus, metro or train. You only need to show your phone (the ticket) to bus drivers, but on tram/train/metro you can just enter as long as you bought the ticket in advance. The app also shows you routes and when a bus etc. arrives. You should come to Helsinki in spring time like around Vappu (30th April) or the summer time, it's much more lively then. Ps. I'm always happy to chat with tourists or anyone in English. Most Finns are very reserved though, but people in Helsinki are generally more open, because they are uses to being around lots of different people. And also, Finns are super straight-to-the-point. The water bottle commenters probably just wanted to help you out, even if they came across rude. So don't take the comments personally, it's just cultural differences 😊

However, they open their mouths when it’s their turn to talk and express something relevant to the discussion. Finns are able to interpret this kind of silence, but it is difficult for other cultures to be comfortable with it.

All the best wishes for you 💕 You seem really nice and really realistic person!
Hi Dawson! Great video! I really like how you film and edit, it's done very beautifully. Please don't mind the negative comments you get! Most finnish people who actually take the time to comment on YT videos are either a) crazy, or b) 12-year-olds! They hear you say something they disagree with and then feel the need to go and "educate" and "correct" you about it like bunch of mannerless, dense idiots! Just ignore them :D and most importanlty, have a nice stay in Finland! :)
BTW Have you watched any youtube videos about foreigner/american living in Finland or travel videos about Finland? I can recommend some if interested :)

Don't worry about people having a go at you because of a small comment in a moment of distress. This is the age of the social media. The threshold to comment is so low, people just react without thinking. They should though. There should be a timer on commenting. First you write it, then you should wait ten minutes before you can actually post it.
It's quite hard to do that, haha. I'm shy, many Finnish people are shy and I'm pretty sure new friends wouldn't like to be filmed. I would love to see you trying some traditional Finnish things, like traditional foods and treats ( maybe in a video you could try different sweets etc. ) and maybe you should try swimming on the ice water! Have you been in smoke sauna eather? That you should try 😊 I am exited to see what is going to happen with you and your channel! All the best wishes for you 💕 You seem really nice and really realistic person!
Henna Halttunen - Ahhh thank you for your comment!! I haven’t tried to sauna yet (but REALLY want to). Also want to try the ice swimming! 😊
You are awesome! Don’t take too personally if people leave something mean in the comment section. So easy when they on the other side of camera ;)
Is it an electronic key? They can be really annoying, you need to be very calm and zen and slowly insert it and then it might work...
BTW Have you watched any youtube videos about foreigner/american living in Finland or travel videos about Finland? I can recommend some if interested :)
*Kris Jenner holding the camera meme* You're doing amazing sweetie
Also, this *is* a positive channel ☺👍🏻
Just ignore rude comments. Most people aren't trying to be rude, but there's always a few trolls/idiots that have to spread their toxicity (is that a word?). 🤦
is the timelime of the shots not in order because at the beginning when you were at the vanha Kauppahalli, the Uspenskin katedraali was just behind you ahah.
It not easy to miss it ahah
I say that because later in the video, you said that you didn't found it the day before.
Epicans - Nope, they’re in order! Just three separate days. Haha that may be what seemed confusing.
@@dawsonsmith4541 okay ahah
You just didn't see the cathedral so ahah
Welcome to Oulu Finland
u staying till summer? hitting the countryside with a car during summer is where its at
Smiauu - I wish I was going to be here for June and July, but my exchange ends at the end of May! So maybe I can catch a bit of it if I’m lucky. ☺️
I enjoy your videos :) You should visit some other cities during your stay here in Finland. For example Kuopio, "the heart of Savo" :)
Veera Kay - ahhh thank you! I plan to visit more cities soon. Kuopio, Inari Tampere are a few on my list. I’m headed to Iceland the first week of March (i know that’s not in Finland haha) but after that, I want to travel around Finland more (if my bank account can take it😂😂).
@@dawsonsmith4541Uuh I live in Tampere. Hope you come and visit at some point. The buildings are so beautiful in here. Tho we have big contraction works everywhere right now because they are making tramp trails.
Maybe you can talk some of your exchange friends into visiting Tallinn, Stockholm or even St. Petersburg. Erasmus Student Network in Oulu seems to have trips to Stockholm and several Russian cities coming up this Spring. www.timetravels.fi/esn-student-unions/esn-oulu.html
Micha Bach - yes, I’ve seen those! they have one big trip coming up soon that goes to Norway, Sweden, Northern Finland and I believe Russia, but can’t go because I’ll be in Iceland. those trips seem really cool, but sort of pricey for someone who’s kinda on a budget while abroad.😅
Don't worry about people having a go at you because of a small comment in a moment of distress. This is the age of the social media. The threshold to comment is so low, people just react without thinking. They should though. There should be a timer on commenting. First you write it, then you should wait ten minutes before you can actually post it.
Crispy - agreed 😂
i need help i want to go there for school but also want to live for awhile what would i do??
Apply for the school. Then you get a student visa.
I'd like to see you interact with the locals 😊
It's quite hard to do that, haha. I'm shy, many Finnish people are shy and I'm pretty sure new friends wouldn't like to be filmed. When editing and filming I try make sure I'm not invading one's personal space. Maybe in future videos while I'm here! I'm still quite new and don't know very many locals, yet!
you should try tasting finnish treats!
Be honest!
BTW What are you studying?
N K - Back home I’m majoring in Entrepreneurship and double minoring in Art and Anthropology. But while in Oulu I’m in the Scandinavian Studies program!
Can you speak any finnish? :)
Tähdenlento - haha bits and pieces 😅 I’m going to try to post a video at the end of exchange to show what I’ve learned but its quite the hard language to learn lol
@@dawsonsmith4541 It's really hard even though I'm from Finland myself! After all these years I still don't understand why "tervetuloa" (welcome) is written with one t in the middle but pronunced with two like "tervettuloa" ???
I really like your vids, but could you just keep postin about 2-3 more seconds from various places, they now just go too fast, we don't have enough time to Enjoy the views....
It is now like a commercial, Not a daily vlog... Don't do those fast music video cuts, we don't like them. We want to watch real life, Not commercials..
Otherwise, good Job ❤️
Mari, mun mielestä tässä vlogissa ei ollu mitään vikaa, eli ehkä sun pitää vaan vaihtaa kanavaa ja antaa meidän muiden kattoa näitä videoita.
"So I went to Starbucks to see what this was...."
And after that, nothing about Starbucks, no video...
Many times you tell us you are going to do something, but show us nothing about those things that happened.
I stop following... Sad ☹️
it feels like im having a stroke while trying to read this comment of yours. nothing you said makes sense
eikö hävetä kirjottaa omalla nimellä ja pärställä noin helvetin huonoa englantia?
