VlogBrothers:
/ vlogbrothers
Filmed, edited, scored, and poked by Michael Aranda
This video was actually my very first introduction to the vlogbrothers. I remember thinking Who are these weird people and why are they on a stage performing? Then I watched every vlogbrothers video and found out that there is nothing special about them, but at the same time there is everything special about them. They are just two brothers making videos for each other and they happened to change my life a little bit.
Best comment.
Exactly the same for me! I've actually read one of John's books (looking for Alaska), which I absolutely loved, without knowing who he is, then Charlie mentioned him a few times, still not knowing who that John is. Then through Charlie discovered Michael and this video. It's still one of my favourite videos on UA-cam, I just love the beginning so much.
Me toooo!
they’re still here and still amazing!
I love Hank's reaction to the universe having no edge, and I feel his pain when everyone around him is all like "whatevs".
Same
Dude... no edge...
Dude... No edge
+Luciano Sandoval I love your profile pic!
Thanks :), It's from the channel MinutePhysics
gotta love MinutePhysics :)
All the way!
I think the universe having no edge is more interesting than chocolate being delicious
I'm amazed it took him until he was over 30 years old to find out that chocolate is delicious.
The observable universe does have an edge, the full universe doesn't.
Maybe.
The universe beyond the observable one is definitionally unknowable. We assume that it behaves according to the laws of physics and similarly to the observable universe.
For all we know, the universe has an edge and it's made of crunchy candy coating.
Dan Heidel Yum.
Daniel W
Incorrect. Anything beyond the edge of the observable universe is definitionally unobservable. The CMBR gives us some constraints upon a wider range of the cosmos than direct observation but either way, you eventually reach a range where we can say absolutely nothing with certainty.
We assume that the laws of physics are constant regardless of location. This is a reasonable assumption but ultimately just that - an assumption. Many mainstream theories posit that the laws of physics are quite different beyond our obsevational range.
Ultimately, we know nothing of what lies beyond our observational horizon. Therefore there is no guaranteee that we will ever know the answer to whether the universe is infinite or bounded.
Daniel W
I don't disagree that the most likely explanation is that the same laws hold for the universe beyond what we can observe. The candy coating is a frivolous example but one that underlines the fact that there is a limit beyond which we cannot and can never (assuming the current expansion rate of the universe continues as it presently does) know anything about.
Beyond a certain point, all spacetime is moving away from us at faster than c. It doesn't matter if you move. Unless you posit FTL travel, there is literally no way for you to ever observe any physical interaction with those parts of the universe. This is a radius only slightly larger than what we already demarcate as the observable universe.
Many models of inflation predict that the laws of physics we know only hold for the area around us. It is entirely likely that basic physics constants are radically different beyond that observable threshold.
We literally know nothing about anything beyond the visible radius. A candy coating has precisely as much observation and scientific basis as any other model. You can make assumptions about it similarity to the place we live in but that assumption has literally the exact same amount of evidence as the universe being a giant M&M.
I can just imagine the new advertisements...
"Chocolate chip Clif bars: more interesting to John Green than the fact that the universe has no edge."
I need a pick-me-up. This is in my favorites list. This is my first of who-knows-how-many pick me up videos. Thank you Michael. Thank you Hank. Thank you John. Dude, no edge.
I absolutely love how this video makes me feel like I was apart of the experience even though I wasn't there. That is a great use of cinematography and thank you for giving the nerdfighters who couldn't make it this beautiful slice of the tour.
It's amazing just how much of this video I can still recite, eight years after the fact.
I feel like “dude, no edge” would be something I would say if I were talking about science while high
I love this video so much, I've seen it like eight times.
Hank, use your words!
still one of my fav videos of all time
0:35 well, the OBSERVABLE universe has an edge...
Yeah, I was getting mad at that.
Yea and we don't know whether the actual universe has an edge or not? It could be the surface of an infinite hyperplane. It could be the surface of a finite hyperplane or the surface of a hypertoroid or whatever shape you can imagine. We just don't know.
I think what he means is that the edge of the observable universe is different for every observer, but what's outside the observable universe, nobody knows.
I will never get tired of this video.
I can't really find a more creative way to say 'this was good'
Hank's way is best. I feel you Hank
I literally come back to this video like twice a year and every single time it gives me the feels. 2012 is the year I started watched the Vlogbrothers and I'm still watching them to this day. I love the editing, I love the music, I love that this video made me discover you, Michael, as well, especially since I started watching your vlogs and I've learned more about you and your f*cking amazing skills and your general awesomeness. Gawd. Such good people
Dude...
NO EDGE
DUDE! NO EDGE!
This video has such an incalculable impact on my friends and I in high school. "Dude, no edge" became the way we'd respond if someone said anything super off the wall. To think that this video is 11 years old, OOF.
John, where's your sense of wonder?!
trinimartini Yeah... No offense, John, but with that attitude, how are you in the living of writing novels about philosophical protagonists again?
Me when the camera was panning back and forth from John to Hank in the beginning: He's so cute. And he's so cute too. And he's cute. And so's he. She's cute too. And he's cute. OMG, can't decide who's the cutest. Oh, hello there, cutie. And you, cutie-pie. Cute. Super cute. Adorable.
What happened to: “…because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff… Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.”???
"Dude, No Edge...!"
Soon to be my new favorite inside joke, as soon as I tell my friends about this video!
DFTBA!
Can we get a remix of this? Something that goes no no edge n-n-n-no no no edge. edge. edge
I kind of can't stop watching this video. It just puts a smile on my face:)
NO EDGE
This is still great four and a half years on.
Is this THE origin of the no edge nerd fighter thing??
alrightythen214 yes this is the FIRST time this happened
I love the vlogbrothers so much because they are the only UA-camrs I know who organize days where they can go out and meet their fans. Their screaming, intellegent, nerdy fans. I also love them because I've learned so much from them. I have Hank's music on my iPod, I have all of John's books, and it would make me so happy if they came to Michigan because I would get a chance to meet them.
DUUUUUDE!!! NO EDGE.
Dude. No. Freaking. Edge.
this is probably my all time favorite youtube video.
Edge?
NO. EDGE.
I have watched this video possibly 500 times in the last 4 days. I can quote the whole thing with the appropriate timing. And I *still* can't stop watching. I love it.
Dude, no edge.
I love how Hank's just got shocked jumping around in pain looks just like the gleeful dancing.
DUDE. NO EDGE.
I'm watching this for like the dozenth time but I think this is the first time I noticed Michael actually in the video. LOL! I can't get enough of this video.
DUDE! NO EDGE! I am literally the satanic spawn of hank green
Apparently I Do not know the correct definition of literally
Freaking far out, watching the first minute and a half of this video makes me so happy for just no discernible reason.
Dude... No edge.
My favourite video. EVER. I keep watching it over and over. :") I love how John is like so pissed at the beginning, and Hank is just like "don't judge I was FASCINATED" and just aaaghh
I could just watch the beginning of this video over and over.
Thank you so much, Mike Aranda, for making a professional grade video of the tour. And also for capturing this wonderful NO EDGE conversation.
Yes! Hank as a ballerina! God bless you for making this!
John's method of making Hank see his own drunken-fraternity-boy style of being in awe of the universe was beautiful. Scathing and beautiful
It's been months, and I STILL watch this, and it STILL makes me happy. :)
Who watched this again (and again and again) after hearing the song in Hank's LEGO Millenium Falcon video?
Thanks Michael, you're awesome!
I love Hank's look of terror as he's about to get shocked.
Running Hank looks like a llama.Which is AWESOME!!!!
I love the dynamic between John, Hank, and the Katherine. It's just so hilarious.
Thank you, Michael, for filming this and sharing it with the world. You always remember to be awesome!
the drum intro to the song is awesome. I want that on loop
And we will say, "Remember that time when the Vlogbrothers became like rock stars, touring nerdfighteria with a fame akin to that of the Beatles in the 40's? A time when it was great to be a nerd. This will never be forgotten."
You've got some mad skills, Michael -- and I DO NOT say that to everyone. For those of us who could not be there, you gave us a taste of what it was like to see John and Hank on tour. Thank you!
Michael, this is just....perfect. The whole Tour de Nerdfighting experience. Thank you.
"That's because I was fascinated" so cute!
I like how everyone just starts dancing after Hank gets shocked :)
one of my favourite videos OF ALL TIME
Best video about the Tour de Nerdfighting that I have seen. Thank you Michael Aranda!!!
HANK. I feel you man. I feel you. I think the universe, and much of its content, is marvelous beyond comprehension. Love the channel(s), and the brotherly love. Reminds me of my own kinship.
DUDE. NO. EDGE. This is the wonderfulest Tour De Nerdfighting 2012 video I have viewed.
Literally, the fave. I say this line more often than I blink.
Returning to this one after John's "Ten Years since TFIOS" video. Thanks for getting footage of this great night! #NoEdge
Hank is a novel written by John Green, involving a road trip, and a teenager by the name of Margo Roth Spiegelman. John Green went on a book tour, doing readings from Hank and also signing copies of Hank.
This video completely captures how epic this community is. Thank you.
I've seen this clip so many times that I have achieved semantic satiation on the phrase "NO EDGE"
I'll never get tired of watching this.
I'm in the beginning of this! The girl in green, screaming in the first audience clip!!! Soooooooooooo exciting!!!!!!
The fact that the universe has no edge is one of the most interesting things I've ever heard, and I'm glad I learned it from Hank. DFTBA!
This quite possibly could be the greatest video I have ever seen.
Sadly I didn't get to go to any of the tour events, but just watching this video makes me so happy and proud to be part of such an awesome community. DFTBA everyone.
I said this in the middle of Science class today, three different nerdifghters approached me afterward congratulating me and exchanging DFTBAs...
THANK YOU Micheal Aranda
Videos like these that involve the vlogbrothers are amazing.
OMG!
I have been looking for this song for so long !!!
I love this video cause it introduced me to both Michael Aranda and the Vlogbrothers. One would say that this video was my opening to being a Nerdfighter.
I can't even tell you the amount of times I have watched this video. So good!
can't handle so many michael aranda videos in such a short period...
It does have an edge, it's a constantly changing edge as it's always expanding like you say, but at any one moment there is an edge to what we can see.
I just realized, hank and John green are living my dream. When I grow up I wanna be them.
This was my first encounter of our boys. I'm crying, and it's wonderful.
It feels incredibly awesome watching this and knowing I was in that audience. Really awesome! Nerdfighter audiences are amazing!
Favorite Aranda video ever.
It's funny how this is such a simple video but it touches me so deeply
This may be my favourite video on the internet
I am so surprised that it took me this long to stumble upon this and gosh now I just love the song so much more. Thanks, Michael for bringing this here.
If i had a time machine i would just to go back to all of these show.
It's kind of great seeing John sitting behind a desk in a classroom. :)
This is the sixth time I have watched this...I think I am addicted...
I agree with Hank, that is fascinating. I think I'm gonna try it as a bedtime-story for my sister...
I love this. I will now go up to my friends and say "Dude, no edge," and see how many of them get that. I will also be doing it because half of them are all mildly stoned a lot of the time and i just want to see then react.
Thank you for creating this when I desperately needed something hilarious to cheer me up. NO EDGE
this was such a treat, especially since the TdN didn't come my way this time- well done Michael.
I saw this before they talked about it on vlogbrothers
...I feel so special
Thanks for the behind the scenes footage! Very cool.
They totally freaked out when John just had to mention that you were there, Michael. And even though I was watching on live stream....I totally freaked out, too. :D
this is one of the best videos on the internet.
That was like, a legit concert video. I love it so much.
They were so mean to Hank...hah
