  • Newborn babies don't have very good head, neck and trunk control. Upright side lying bottle feeding is the position most nurses and therapists will use in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit to safely bottle feed young babies. This puts baby in the same position as they are at the breast and allows for easier pacing of the feeding while preventing coughing, choking, and leaking milk. Baby is on the feeder's leg (which is raised to prevent baby from being fed while they are flat). The leg and the feeder's arm give baby's trunk lots of support while the hand helps hold the head and neck.
