  • IBCLC explains side lying bottle technique for helping babies accept a bottle. This technique is particularly helpful for babies who are presenting with feeding challenges or gag and refuse bottles.
Babies under 3 months of age need this technique instead of upright or reclined bottle feeding.

Excellent, excellent, excellent!..this works like a charm for grandad & grandma caring for 3 month old grandson. Worked from the first try. Amazing thing is, our grandson was nursed all the way up to us getting him. This method is a miracle! Thank you for sharing your tip on this.

I just came across this video and it is excellent! My husband and I are adopting and so we will be bottle feeding. Will a lactation consultant work with us in the hospital if we request it??

How would you position yourself and baby if you were outside of home/in public?x

My baby is at daycare and the caregivers there usually feed in a cushy rocking chair. Is there a way to side lying feed baby in a chair that isn’t a recliner? The couch or bed isn’t super common in a childcare setting.

How do you prevent air from getting in the one side of the bottle nipple in that position?

So my preterm baby has been sidelined bottle fed since she came home... she is now 3 months old and i was wondering if she can continue in this feeding style for the foreseeable future? How old can she do this for? We have tried to introduce the more traditional feeding holds and she is terrible at them.... so we continue to sideline feed... any advice would be great thanks... if there is no detrimental effect to keep doing side lying then we will just stick with it, thanks!

Hi, I know this was several months ago so I’m sure you’ve moved on, but I wanted to answer this for anyone who sees it in the future! With preterm babies everything is often delayed. So if you see your preterm baby struggling with something that they’re age suggests they “should” do, remind yourself how old your baby would be if they were full term! So let’s say your baby was born at 34 weeks. If this feeding method is good for babies up to three months, for your baby, 3 months might look more like a 2 month old in terms of certain developmental skills. So for this method, you could likely use this effectively for 4 or even 5 months if you find the methods that are age appropriate just aren’t quite working out yet!
