#12: Look at your old art and FUCKING CRINGE
I don't think looking at older drawings motivates you to improve, but rather helps you feel accomplished when you have improved, which can lead to inspiration, and helps you see that all your works has been for something.
#1 - 01:03 - Draw regularly.
#2 - 02:15 - Use references (and don't be ashamed of it).
#3 - 04:14 - Do studies (careful copies) of drawings you admire.
#4 - 06:10 - Try looking at the thing you're drawing as an abstract arrangement of shapes.
#5 - 07:47 - Pay attention to the level of contrast in your drawings: darks vs. lights.
#6 - 09:55 - Get your art supplies at a real art store.
#7 - 12:30 - Learn the three different systems of perspective.
#8 - 14:01 - Challenge yourself by drawing in different art styles.
#9 - 16:53 - Don't expect progress to occur in a matter of weeks, or even months.
#10 - 18:02 - If comparing your art to that of other people is bringing you down, then stop doing it.

As someone not familiar with his drawings, I was absolutely floored by the effect of the white gouache highlights. The mask looks incredibly 3D and metallic.

whenever I look back at my old art I can't believe how much I've improved with my art.
I think in a few years I will be able to draw realistic things.I am only ten and my drawings already almost look realistic.when I was seven I drew two realistic pictures:a cat and a dog.

the greatest teacher i ever had said (during my first drawing class, in my first year in art school): "a lot of people say they can't draw. i'm not going to teach you how to draw, i'm going to teach you how to see".
he was referring to showing us how to develop the sight to understand the physical relationships between objects in space as well as the physical characteristics of objects themselves, ie how do lines associate with each other to describe a shape, or articulate distance?
your statement that we are not drawing a tree, but are drawing shapes is comparable with the advice of my drawing prof. thanks for the insight :)

With your videos you teach me how to teach, but there was something I didn't knew how to really grasp and it was the drawing of the hand I mean you did it well but for me was difficult to break a way to explaining it when you said "does someone has a way of drawing hands"! I was like what??? No mark no way!!!! xD I just draw what I see but since I don't use construction lines the only way to draw a hand from a basic form was with your tutorial using the square! Now I know how to teach it but seriously you have some amazing tips I got some from art attack so when you're about to paint an environment you want to use less water for the painting in the front for palm trees and such then the backround is more and more watery the further you go the more whater you put, then you could use pen or markers for the details in the sand and the palm tree! The other tip I have is something I found in dibujando.net when I was a late teenager! Each and every person over 13 years old that measures like 1'70 has like 7 heads of height from tip to toe! That blew me away!!!!! Anyway than you for your tutorials I learned a lot from using pens and another anime style you made! I got my own too but yours is really original as well! And I'm a fan of sci-fi and hyperrealism as well, one day I will make my own comics! I'm self taught by the way for 31 years old! Being a kid I always wanted to draw the Mona Lisa, the Sphinx, the statue of liberty etc.! As you said I tried to copy many different art styles from different people through the years like my other hero of drawing Leonardo Da Vinci, artists like Akira Toriyama and Nobuhiro Watsuki!
If you want a tip from me it would be this one: when you draw a hand or any form that is a compund form or a simple irregular form like a female form always look for a thing that looks similar, even if the reference is difficult to grasp in the paper you could at least l draw a pear shape for the female and like a curved cup for the hand! Observing one's hand is the best reference too!

Do you think I should learn how to draw a straight line first?
Whenever I need a line to be really straight, I use a ruler. I don't feel that the ability to draw perfectly straight lines is a prerequisite for being a good or even great artist.

you've been my art teacher for years and many more to come. I will progress as you have did and I hope to help others as well .. Thank you Mark crilley for sharing your art and giving us tips. we all appreciate your tips and art advice. You're like our art teacher who has inspired us to be better but you help lift our confidence as well as actually teach us how to truly draw. -~- I will admit I have comparing issues as well but I'll practice whenever I can and I keep my old art work to see how I progressed. To add:
1) Set a timer when you're working on a project. (Maybe it's 90 minutes). Then take a break, and possibly switch projects. This can help you stay fresh and see your art a new way the next time you look at it. You also won't go too far down the wrong road with a single drawing this way.
2) Don't immediately share finished pieces. Save them up. Maybe get 10 to 20 pieces finished before sharing your work. This will allow you to keep your enthusiasm for your work, and not get the wind taken out of your sails if the one piece you just finished doesn't get a lot of immediate feedback.
3) Don't be afraid to re-draw something.
Forgot the biggest one
4) Learn how to draw volumes--learn how to convey the third dimension on flat paper. Probably the hardest drawing skill to grasp. I've found it's about 85% of drawing--at least for me.

One of the things I do is hold the paper up to a light source (the brighter the better), and look at the drawing "backwards"- if things that look alright the normal way don't look good the other way, I'll know if and how to change it.
I know I look like an idiot when I do it but it helps me so whatever.

MrApotator Probably! I took one art class at a community college on digital art. The dude literally sat there and gave us prompts from the internet, then helped us navigate photoshop and illustrator if we asked a question. I learned that I can easily teach myself instead of wasting my money.

I used to draw a lot when I was at school and only started again about a year ago. I constantly fight the urge to give it up again when I see how crude my stuff turns out compared to that of other artists and even to my own older stuff. I guess I need more patience.

Number 10 really applied to me, but I can't stop comparing my art to others. Even during this video I picked up my drawing and looked at it compared to yours, and then I felt, terrible. I really try to stop but I just can't..
I know how you feel, but one way I turned that feeling around is that when you compare your drawing to someone else's just think to yourself, "One day I'll be able to draw even better than this"! I personally have a very competitive streak and that probably helps to make this trick work but it's still a good trick. If that doesn't work, or even if it does work, try to see what it is about that other artwork you like so much, whether it be a certain stroke you like or maybe even how the colors blend well together, try to figure out how or why they did so, not only will you get better, you'll also see that by trying to learn what they did that their level of artwork really isn't so far away that you can't ever get there. I hope this helps and happy drawings ^^

I don't really know this feeling. Whenever I see my artwork and someone else's I see two different artist's works, one with room for improvement. I don't know if that's natural but hey, that's my way of thinking.
I have the same problem, I'm really insecure about my drawings. I do not live alone, so im constantly stressed that someone is going to walk in and see.

Just started drawing 3 days ago. Definitely helps to draw every day.
One tip I would add is study your own work. I like to look at the things that make me feel like "this is a good drawing" and vice versa. I try to replicate the good parts and edit the issues in future works.

I've only recently discovered this channel but I've come to eagerly await every new video. It's just so cool to have someone with your experience talk so openly and honestly. You very obviously do this because you have a passion for drawing and teaching. It's visible on the page. It's audible in your voice. You don't do this to sell a service, and you don't hold anything back that some might consider 'premium content'. You plug your books on occasion but that's never the point of the video and it's never done in a pushy way- just a "support me if you like this stuff" way. You present yourself as the viewer's friend and equal, not as their professor, and not someone whose time is too expensive or valuable to share with the plebs.

look at other people's artwork and maybe use their ideas to create a similar style or image.
Pro tip for reference pictures get a good quality camera 📷 and take pictures of literally EVERYTHING!!! I recommend the Nikon Cool pix A10 its small, strong - tough as nails - even, and the battery’s easy to change (takes AA batteries) I also recommend a 64 GB memory card
Emerald Queen GREAT ADVICE! And before any of you say, “But I already have a camera on my phone”, know that you will all too soon be filling up all space on your phone constantly! Grrrrr... You really do need a separate camera just for grabbing visual references, ideas, etc. Before you know it, you’ll be creating visual reference files that will come in very handy. Now and later.
HINT : start organizing those files into categories now while there are only a few! So much easier than you have created a massive amount of images!

In my experience all my art teachers have been very helpful, it's unfortunate that there's terrible teachers out there, keeping us for achieving our potential.
+Sergio Fierro In the past i took some lessons and it was with this really big group so he only had a short amount of time with each person, and he did the same he just pointed out the wrongs and walked away even when i asked what excactly i did wrong. I just stopped and learned from youtube tutorials. Believe me they are so much better than expensive drawing lessons

I've always enjoyed the fine arts, music, painting and drawing, learning languages, all of these things require practice, patience, and commitment. I use to draw when I was in grade school and some in high school, but I wasn't too serious about it at the time, and now that I have a lot of time on my hands I wanted to get back into it and start to take it more seriously. This video has already helped me a ton as I wasn't feeling great about my recent drawings, but I've got a long way to go to get better. Thanks Mark!

For some reason, I think of them as completely different drawings. Cause when its colored it gives it a colorful look. While on the other hand - when its not colored it looks like its supposed to be that way.

The last tip hit me hard. Thank you for all the wonderful tips mark. I quit drawing for a few years because I saw my friends who started drawing later than me do better. And I didn't see myself improving so I gave up. I even stopped watching your videos even though I used to be addicted to them. Now I'm binge watching because I decided to start drawing again. Funny enough now a days I prefer drawing landscape over manga.

I remember back in high school, the best advice I was given was, "Draw what you see, not what you think you see." In context it made sense. We were drawing from photos of faces, so the pictures were supposed to look as much like the person we were drawing as possible and I held onto this advice for years and years. If I'm drawing something and I want it to look exactly the same, then I don't look at one part and think, "Well that looks weird", and change it. I draw it exact. It's really helped me improve even when drawing something from my own mind. I will use several different pieces of reference and combine what I like for the finished drawing, but if I want a certain part to look a just the same way, I am very careful to draw it as close to what the reference is as possible.

why not do both?there are a lot of different things in art and science that go hand in hand.there is so many possibilities with the 2 together.paleo art,the study of how art effects the mind and so much more.

+star and fox I like a lot of things related to science... too much, I must say. Genetics, medicine, psycology, mysteries of the brain, physics... I like everything that isn't completely investigated yet. Basically most of science... The thing is, what if, with a job like that, I have no time to draw?
I started drawing electronically on my pc. Drawing on paper is more fun, but for pc its more convenient, and erasing it way easier. Transitioning will take most people weeks to get used to by the way.
It's best to get good at traditional art, before digital, but it all boils down to preference, and I've yet to try digital

A tip that i would recommend is doing gesture drawings. They help A LOT, especially for those that want to get better at drawing full body pictures whether of real people or manga characters. After drawing about 80 gesture drawings I saw a huge improvement in my art in terms of drawing full body figures.

THANK YOU for talking about looking at references. That makes me feel WAY better. Ive been trying to draw from memory and its been bringing me down but knowing its unrealistic for most artists helps tons! Also, Amadeus is one of my top 10 favorite movies lol
What your saying is very accurate. Never in my life I watched a how to draw video. And I’ve been drawing for more than 4 years. I started off by just copying what I liked and noticed how they do it. Then I draw it my self without looking. After that I draw what I’ve seen. Then I draw things that are beautiful. So i was like from drawing humans to drawing amazing landscapes. And know today I watch this video. And he is soo right about these things. Listen to what he’s saying to become an artist. Here’s one advice I should give you. Listen to relaxing or sad music. Trust me, it would put you in a focus where you want to accomplish something. Best with headphones by the way. It will really help out. And for now. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS 👍👍👏
One of my art teachers told me to not be afraid to make bad art. Of course naturally, bad and good in art is subjective, but I think what he was getting at was to not beat yourself up if something is not up to your own standards, and just keep going. I guess that's my add-on.

I have been in a stump over the years with my style of work. Was never satisfied with my work, and sadly I always compared it to others who looked much better than mine.
One month before I head back to school, going four my bachelors in digital animation, and I was looking at old artwork, both good and very ugly, and I told myself that I needed help. So I searched on UA-cam to see what other artist were doing to help themselves get out of the constant stump of being stuck. I had pass by a few of your other videos and they have been very helpful as well.

Whenever I pick up a pencil and my drawing notebook I go on my computer and google an anime image i want to draw, I start drawing and my drawing dosent look like the one im seeing, I feel like i cant draw anymore I cant even draw anymore. I wish i can draw using my mind ive been depressed lately i feel like i lost my drawing talent im trying to believe in myself but i cant do it.. my notebbok is filled with unfinished and ugly drawings... Im trying to pick myself up.

EpicGamer You can always take a short break, maybe 2 to 3 days from drawing, and then when you feel like your ready to start drawing again go ahead. This works for me most of the time. Also when creating your artwork try doing something different from the last time you created a drawing. In other words, challenge yourself to do something different in your drawing. Also practice in areas your not so good at and over time you'll see improvement.
you will get real good eventualy, when you keep going drawing the image you are viewing you may not like it, but the more you draw you eventually realize hey i Drew that guys hair exactly even tho the rest is weird but you draw more and more and you get better with piece by piece by piece till you can mimick it, and stay strong man im terrible right now i got the eyes down but the rest of the drawings of characters bodies are lopsided and strange, so im working at this too, like Mark crilley says, it took him years

Everyone feels like this once in a while and it will happen many times more. Just know that you aren't the first nor will you be the last to experience this. What I found very useful for me is to use my drawing time as self help time. Time to allow me to catch up to myself. Sometimes the routine of life can rush us along without allowing us to breathe. So I suggest you put on some head phones, listen to some native american flute music and running streams and bird sounds. Keep the sound and music on, take a deep breath and just be conscious that your drawing will become just what you will it to become. I think the main problem right now is that you are depressed and therefore being too hard on yourself, you are expecting something and this may be the very cause of your depression. Do not expect and be grateful for what you receive. Depression sucks hombre, but you'll get out of it. Imagine depression as a pile of dirt over a seed. It will nurture you and test you at the same time, but one day you will rupture through it and become something grand. Stay up and know that there are many of us out there that are here for you.

The 6th tip I definitely do, for example you use white gouache (idk how to spell it) while I prefer to use Sakura jelly rolls, you use a black prismacolor while I use fineliners and brush pens, you tend to work in graphite while I prefer colored lead, fineliners, watercolor, colored pencils, and markers, everyone has their own medium and shouldn't try to use exactly what other artists use, find what works for you

"If you're learning from someone who does not have a very professional look, you are probably going to pick up their bad habits." That was very well put. This is often enough an issue that never comes up upon asking an artist for advice. I've been having severe anxiety with my work. I asked an artist who had a 4 year art degree how my work could use improvement. Instead of constructive criticism, he told me that it looked like it was from DeviantArt. And that he would skim right past it on the site if he saw it. It actually hurt. I get that I'm an amateur but there needs to be more advice like yours. It gives me hope. Thank you.

I didn't have any idea of what to draw and no motivation until I found you. I always tried to draw from memory, because I thought I had to. Now I draw every day, taking inspiration from artists such as kerby rosanes, and of course you! I'm getting better and better.

Hahah... these tips are all so true. I have improved vastly in the last three years (since I entered highschool) and these tips were basically the backbone of my success, with my determination and love for art making up the skin and muscles.
Between my freshman and sophomore year, I probably killed a few trees on my own, as I went through about six to eight sketchbooks (filled with very few gems in my opinion), probably three LARGE packets of copy paper, about four sets of good colored pencils, what must have been a full set of micros (a pack of twelve (I think? I got them in my sophomore year, so...)) and maybe a few dozen fine tipped sharpies, and numerous other supplies. None of my supplies came from Michaels (at least, not the ones I bought myself--I got a MASSIVE art kit from my mom's boyfriend for Christmas junior year--to which I have barely touched). Paintbrush does not make the painter.
Personally my medium is colored pencil, with a dash of pen touches. I cannot grasp paint, I barely reach sufficient in pastels, and I have yet to use a copic, as much as I love watching videos with them. I am poor, but that did not stop me from practicing on any piece of paper I could reach (many of my explorative sketches were actually doodled in the edges of my homework). If you draw a picture you are extremely proud of, do not be afraid to admit that it may not be the best it COULD be, but never tell yourself that you suck, and NEVER tell yourself to quit. Art was my passion, the only thing that could keep my attention for more than an hour, and I started out terrible. I drew cats, and people thought they were dogs or foxes (and I LIVED WITH CATS), but now I can sketch the basic form of a cat in less than ten seconds, and I am able to draw a realistic cat anyone can recognize.
Mark beings up very good points in this video, and I want to just add: To love your art, you need to truly love yourself and the person you are. Don't be afraid to find your flaws and try to fix them, but if you drag yourself down, you drag down the passion that goes into your art, and you will suffer because of it. I used to be very shy, but once I joined my local drama club, I became more confident, and therefore I became more confident in my art, and I improved exponentially afterword. Of course, the plethora of willing mannikens was nice, too. ;)
Either way, as long as you keep trying and practicing, you will improve. It may be slow and annoying, but the change is there, give it time.

Kimberly Jade I have a similar thing. Well actually, I was too stubborn to realize there was a problem with ME until around the middle of 10th grade. Let me tell you, since then I was spending all my free time watching tutorials on anatomy and shading, and just last year during summer break, pretty much the only thing I was doing was drawing up random pictures specifically for the purpose of inking them. I occasionally upload my drawings to Google+, and I went from having an average of 10-15 likes per picture to over 50 per picture by the time I started 11th grade. It's not much lol, but it does show that I improved a lot during those few months, and I only regret not starting to work on my faults sooner, because who knows how much better I'd be by now. Tools really don't make the artist, I used to spend money on Microns and ask for expensive supplies, but even back in 9th grade when I tried inking with the expensive Microns instead of a ballpoint pen, my art still looked bad. As of now, I sometimes ink using a ballpoint pen and it doesn't look much different from if I inked with a Micron, with the exception of the fact that I'd be able to get different values and stuff and there might be a small smear or two from me accidentally rubbing my hand over ink.
As for Copics, I'm also broke, but I'm starting small and buying like, one or two Copics at a time when they're on sale. I'm also saving up on the side for a set of 72 Ciaos- it's gonna take months though lol. Ebay has various "Copic lots" worth checking out - basically when someone is selling a bunch of random Copics. $20 can typically get you 5 or 6 in a lot, though if this is going to be your main way of getting Copics, I'd imagine you will end up with duplicates...

They said I suck and have no talent. I should stop drawing etc etc. My heart was broken and had no determination to continue. I was crying since then in my bed. Yea just ignore them. At least you finally found your passion. You definitely should continue because I'm certain people will get amazed of your drawings and will start asking you to draw something for them.
I wasn't that good before but now I'm getting to where Mark is with just pencils not colour, everyone says I'm really good at drawing and by just hearing that will give you courage to do better. Took me more than a year to learn realism.
+Tunahan Koçak i noticed that being a artist takes more than skill,practice etc it also involves emotions/feelings and you will come to learn making thingsv. There will also be many comments that are negative but also positive one aboout you're artwork. It is all up to you to motive and one day prove themwrong or even yourself till you get better....in the end remember its always about having FUN nothing else

I finally treated myself to "Mastering Manga" a while back, and honestly it has helped so much with the technicalities of manga styling! This video rings true in so many ways, it's great that you are able to reach so many people especially who might not have supportive art teachers. I haven't been in an art class for 7 years now (jeez I'm getting old D:) but I was blessed with an incredibly encouraging teacher, and I'm eternally grateful. I'm 71 and I love to draw, and you would think I've been drawing for years, but not true. I went through chemo twice in my life and I have forgotten things like drawing. So now I'm a practicing Newby and I like what you draw. My husband is an artist and he can make up cartoons off the top of his head.
I've been an artist as long as I can remember and I'm 55. I agree with you totally when you say putting pencil to paper is the one thing you would always rather be doing. And in my humble opinion, all 10 of your suggestions were spot on.
My sister likes to put me down by telling me 'Oh no, her neck is too long' 'It looks like a horse/dog' 'the legs are too long' sometimes it kind of helps, sometimes I just want to shove her pessimistic head down the drain. She puts me down, but I still try. Also, I've recently tried making anime characters...so far...I can only do Heads, necks, and shoulders. Bodies are hard, especially hands.

That must suck, when you will probably have a harder time getting better if she criticizes it. You know what, if she says something like that, just think 'is there something I dislike about this?' If there is, it's either some small nit picky thing that is just you being rude to yourself, or there's something you can improve. Don't think 'Hey this sucks I need to change it', just experiment!

Mark, You have helped me get back into drawing after losing interest because I felt my drawing ability was not up to par with others at my age range. I saw others draw amazing masterpieces and all I could draw was a very poor copy of a zombie.
