Thanks, everyone, for turning the "10-minute/1-minute/10-second Speed Drawing Challenge" into an art trend here on UA-cam! I've made an official playlist of all the videos I've found (40 and counting) since I uploaded this first vid: ua-cam.com/play/PLBiW8y5LSHK61vc-NOe7BSDFd1AHT_0LT.html
This oddly enough reminds me of my process going through an exam. 1/2 neat well written and well worked out. 1/4 neat but simplified working out. 1/8 panic.
I love this UA-cam artist community, how everyone influences and supports each other. It's really nice and I feel like I'm a part of that when I learn from all these artists and watch lots of them :)
Mike I just bought your book The Drawing Lesson and I TRULY appreciate everything you are doing. I have three kids under six years of age, a puppy and a very aggressive wife and your art tends to calm me lol. I'm working on my own sketches but baby steps, it's hard.
OML he was way too calm during the challenges, I was like:" NO NO ONLY 10 MIN. START DRAWING START DRAWING! NO COMMENTS" Mark: " I don't know if you can hear it but there is a rainstorm.." 😅😅
Oh my god. As soon as I saw the Realism Challenge my mind exploded. I knew about you for so long and then I forgot but when I saw that it all came back. Thanks man for helping people make drawings. Keep doing what you do and don't let anyone tell you not to.
I love ur mastering manga book and how you don't only show 1 way to draw someone, you use multiple such as fuller teen child mother father & more! So thank you mark!
Dude Awesome! I have this comic. I was a big fan of the Spuckler and Gax arc. I remember picking up your book as a kid, because of the cool robot on the cover. I saw it in the thumbnail and I had a flashback to the year 1990something. So awesome to find you on youtube! I'ma go dig through my old comics now. brb
What this proves is manga writers in Japan shouldn't be forced to release a chapter every week. Or given ridiculous deadlines because of the anime. They should be allowed to work and let the quality be good. American comics they usually have a month, and the difference is night and day.
To be fair, Vagabond was weekly for a long time, and the artwork there surpasses many comics, even if there is a lack of color (which i personally prefer, black and white is more appealing to me). But then again, Takehiko Inoue is kind of a genious lol
Not everyone has a weekly serialization. Monthly and bi-weekly is also a thing. That and doujin, anthology, and one-shots allow artists more time to work.
I think that the app he is using actually also has a timer-mode, but he isn't using it. I agree it would actually be fun if he had a timer (maybe with some blushingly loud alarm when time's up! ;-)
You're right! I hadn't noticed! There must be some apps to download that has seconds, I guess, but the one that comes with the iPad/iPhone doesn't have seconds for the timer. It could still be used for the first two challenges but not the last one unfortunately (and probably the one you need it most! ;-).
This was randomly recommended to me and your name was strangely familiar so I investigated. Sure enough, I remember watching your "How to draw backgrounds" videos about 1 and 2 point perspective, uploaded 5 years ago! Crazy bit of nostalgia I sure didn't expect to get today.
" I am Gax". " I am a particular being that responds to being called by the name Gax". "My name is that of three letters whereas two are categorized as constants and the other is a vowel. Upon intercepting a vocal representation of these three letters forming a name, it would be in my nature to respond to this inquiry".
Drawing Basics: 1 circle = 1 circle 1 circle + random textures = 1 circle + random textures 1 circle + random textures + basic or improved shading = 1 circle + random textures + basic or improved shading. Omg! You sure? I mean.. really? : | Ofc, all this knowledge for free! You are welcome! :)
I don't know how this appeared in my "Recommended". I don't usually draw, since I am terrible at it. However, I'll keep a eye on this channel, perhaps I'll get back to it at some point.
Mark you're my favorite, lmao. You always make me smile with your silly and witty comments throughout the video! You're such an inspiration, haha! Thank you for doing what you do. I bought your first drawing manga book when I was about 12 or 13 and it REALLY helped! I'm planning on getting number 3 soon so thank you!!! You're amazing. My dream is to one day meet you irl!! 😊😊😊
I don't care for drawing but I love this video, you're great at keeping the audience in tune and interested, hope to see more 10 minute, 1 minute, 10 second challenges!!!
markcrilley hey Mark I would love it if you drew the ATATs attacking the rebel forces from Star Wars the empire strikes back; I also think it would be a fun little challenge for you. Please reply back when you can :)
I just bought one of your mastering Manga book yesterday and I really like it! 😊I usually always have to use a reference to draw but I hope this book will help me learn to without ☺
I rarely thumb up videos. I just found this so amusing. Been subbed for a while (on my other account). I was losing my inspiration, but I want to try this. It just looks so fun!!
Not only does it show what happens when you rush your line work, but it also shows what pressure can do to one, and let me tell ya, that last one was the definition of stress and pressure
Please continue to make these videos. It really helps cermet the concept of taking your time with drawings and the importance of preliminary lines. Very Helpful thank you
This is hilarious challenge, it really cheered me up. Please do it again time to time. Still every single picture is great considering the time you had for it (I love the last one :D). Maybe I try just for fun what I am able to draw in 10s.
Where did you get that people like real time videos? From my experience, and requests, people skip real time videos cause people don't have the patience to sit there and watch the whole thing, that's why they prefere time lapse videos. I don't know, maybe your subs don't, i might be wrong. Let me know what you think.
I get complaints from people who say they want no time lapse, but I the reality is many of my videos without time lapse would end up being 2 to 3 hours long. I find that the combination "real time + some time lapse" videos are the best way of keeping everyone happy. :)
That is true, i mean most of the time you can't do without time lapse. But have you ever gotton any complains that your videos are just too long? I use to get that, i don't know if you do
I don't mind either way, but a good amount of the people that prefer him to draw in real time like it better because they're actually drawing along with him. He uploads a time lapse version of 90% of his videos anyway. I enjoy the mix of time lapse and real time because I've grown to like mark as a person and hearing him discuss his personal techniques, but at the same time I don't have 2 hours to spare for a video so it's the best of both worlds.
Mark I was introduced to you at comicon and went to your drawing panel you called me hat boy but I am so exited to start watching your videos and using you drawing tips to improve my art skills😀😀😀I subbed !
this is such an inspiring video to watch as a novice artist! to look at the right and see something that I could draw without issue. then to look at the middle and see what steps I'd have to take to get better and then the finishing touches on the left. it's just amazing to see scribbles be made into something that looks like it's worth something! I would love to see this challenge be done the other way, 10 seconds - 1 minute - 10 minutes. also with a human character. not chibi either!
Mark, Thanks for giving this information on the joint 1.5 hour broadcast with Leonardo and Lisa. I will get back into viewing your channel. Great in 10 minutes. Ok on the 1 minute. Now for the 10 seconds. WOW! you did it. This is fun.
An almost near impossible feat but i'am almost certain that there is certaintly nothing more impossible that Mark can't accomplise than this :D ;) you have earned my support.
Hi, Mark. This was a great video. Brought smile on my face, especially the 10 seconds drawing. It reminds me of the fun I had while doing some super quick sketches of my mother last summer and she was like "why do I always look like a truck driver on your drawings!" Anyway, I would love to watch more videos like this. And I might try to make some too :-D
Oh my god, you are awesome mark XD Loved your videos for so long! You are an awesome artist! I can't wait until I buy all of your mangas and mastering mangas :)
I love this challenge! it exercises the artist's knowledge of what makes a character. to do it in one minute or 10 sec. you really need to know what the most important features of a character is. So it is sort of like studying for 10 min. shrinking down the details in 1 min. and getting the most essentials in the 10 sec.
In my mind, it's just to reduce pressure. It's easier to approach a deadline when time is moving forward to it and doesn't attack the mind as much. But when it's counting down to it the pressure suddenly rises and quality and focus immediately go out the drain for just pure work. On the other hand Mark might've just not wanted to bother with the timer.
i really want them books they seem awesome-no beyond awesome i must have them all including brodys ghost great video mark you've helped my drawing ability's so much thank you if it weren't for you i'd still be drawing stick men XD thanks for the great videos mark.
I too got a Wall-e feeling. In the same awwww, a cute robot who apparently collects things-way. +Adam Heeley, aww, Number 5 alive. One of my favorite childhood movies. It actually came out when I was a child.
I didn't realize until the books came up, I watched this channel over 2 years ago in math class (don't worry - I knew the class material). My art has changed SO MUCH in that time. Pretty sure this channel had an effect on my style back then.
this video appeared on my recommended list, I watched it because I thought I already saw that character somewhere and I remembered I used to read akiko as a kid! it was my favourite book series 😁
! I read all of your books when I was a kid! Ohh man! I Haven't thought about them in years! What a blast from the past. Who'd a thunk I'd rediscover that series when trying to improve my art style all these years later.
Could I ask you a question about your books though? There was a character in them that I would fight with one of my friends at the time every day about how their name is pronounced. Is it pronounced "poo-g" or "pah-g" or neither?
i saw mastering manga in a local store....i freaked the freak out!!! I called my friend and then we freaked the freak out together!! Im going to buy it soon as i get money. We almost never get anything good art related in these parts. (sophie chan's book is right next to yours as well!! My prayers were answered)
I always hated reading but loved drawing as a kid, but the only books i would ever read in school were Akiko books. i just want to thank you for that. i have like 3 signed books from you when you came to my school, but i dont remember it much :( it was in elementary school. im now in high school. it was at Wilde Elementary. i still think of you as my favorite author and artist.
I don't really know why UA-cam recommend me this.. but I can feel the trill in 1 minute tho- my 30 minutes looks like your 1 minute fast drawing. Awesome.
That was so fun! I'm sure this has been mentioned already, but if you did the timer you wouldn't have to spend extra stress (and time) constantly checking the clock, you could just draw until you hear the alarm go off :P Thanks for another great video!!
I just finished my edition of the challenge. It's pretty funny at the end. I have to say, this was a very exciting and fun experience. You should try it. Okay thanks for making the video, Mark. Pretty cool. :)
I'm assuming the camera's facing straight down, mounted slightly above him so it's not in his way, and zoomed in so you don't see him and the surrounding area...
Moot Maybe.. But he must have an extremely tall tripod for the camera, the then what if he bumps it? and you'd think the quality of the video would be grainy if it was zoomed in :/
+Teeg Monkey Actually, the camara is right in front of him, then when he goes back to edit the video, he just flips the images right side up. I wondered that myself as well, but someone in the comments clarrified that for me. Hope I did too! 😊
It's been so many years, yet Crilley still talks about the goddamn trusty black prismacolour pencil.
iliketrain10 lol
Pen is mightier than sword.
if the sword was very short and the pen very sharp
the black prismacolour is ageless
iliketrain10 oh I remember those old days... It's like it was today...
Thanks, everyone, for turning the "10-minute/1-minute/10-second Speed Drawing Challenge" into an art trend here on UA-cam! I've made an official playlist of all the videos I've found (40 and counting) since I uploaded this first vid: ua-cam.com/play/PLBiW8y5LSHK61vc-NOe7BSDFd1AHT_0LT.html
markcrilley I really want to do this but I don't have a camera setup like that. i don't even have a camera. I'll have to use my phone to record it.
Deathwing Plays just do it. it s the challange and not what fancy stuff you got. love to watch you try it !
This oddly enough reminds me of my process going through an exam. 1/2 neat well written and well worked out. 1/4 neat but simplified working out. 1/8 panic.
But what about the last eighth?
The fact that its missing gives a slight hint ;D
oh, it's left unfinished? in that case, i feel ya, bro
I love this UA-cam artist community, how everyone influences and supports each other. It's really nice and I feel like I'm a part of that when I learn from all these artists and watch lots of them :)

Oh my god. As soon as I saw the Realism Challenge my mind exploded. I knew about you for so long and then I forgot but when I saw that it all came back. Thanks man for helping people make drawings. Keep doing what you do and don't let anyone tell you not to.
I really really liked this video!! Really creative and I haven't seen anything like this before and I learned some things! 10/10! :)

A lot of manga artist have unaccredited art assistants. So the workload isn't THAT heavy. Most western artist don't do this.
Not everyone has a weekly serialization. Monthly and bi-weekly is also a thing. That and doujin, anthology, and one-shots allow artists more time to work.
You should see Tokyo Ghoul: Re, the author puts out weekly chapters with amazing art.
gax looks like a relative of WallE, like his 3rd cousin twice removed
lol
I swear Mark Crilley is not human. lol. No one can draw that good in ten seconds XD
Thank you, you're too kind ^_^
Four years later and thousand of UA-camrs have repeated this challenge. Major congrats to you.
I loved watching the franticness of the 10 second one - fantastic as always Mark
You should use the timer instead of the stopwatch on your ipod.
Right!
I think that the app he is using actually also has a timer-mode, but he isn't using it. I agree it would actually be fun if he had a timer (maybe with some blushingly loud alarm when time's up! ;-)
MMQuck but the timer doesn't have seconds

he can use timer mode for 1 minute and the 10 minute and use the stopwatch for the 10 secoud one
I love the idea. I still keep drawing because of your videos. you motivate people like me. You're an amazing artist.
Thank you-- glad I can help! :)
this was so mutch fun to watch...do more of these
This was randomly recommended to me and your name was strangely familiar so I investigated. Sure enough, I remember watching your "How to draw backgrounds" videos about 1 and 2 point perspective, uploaded 5 years ago! Crazy bit of nostalgia I sure didn't expect to get today.
Here we see Gax, Ga, and G
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Hilarious!
😂😂
" I am Gax".
" I am a particular being that responds to being called by the name Gax".
"My name is that of three letters whereas two are categorized as constants and the other is a vowel. Upon intercepting a vocal representation of these three letters forming a name, it would be in my nature to respond to this inquiry".
Love this cause it kinda shows that if you put time into ur work u can achieve better results

You're here drawing insane drawings in 10 minutes while I'm here trying to draw a straight line
Awsome video as usual. You sir are a funny man and amazing artist.
Solid 5/7.
Thank you Sally! I'm intrigued, I must say, by your "7-stars" ratings system. ;)
markcrilley hey Mark I would love it if you drew the ATATs attacking the rebel forces from Star Wars the empire strikes back; I also think it would be a fun little challenge for you.

Should be called "The 10 minutes, 1 minute, Modern Art Challenge".
That 10 second one is what I draw in 10

haha me too...
Borealis the 10 second one would take me 30 minuets
+Joseph Hardin Theres no way someone could even be that bad .. unless you draw using your feet or something .
KingSquid Wait? you dont draw with you feets?
You don't have to talk about drawing constantly. I enjoy fun stories to listen to. And i think im not the only one
Thank you Jesse :)
An almost near impossible feat but i'am almost certain that there is certaintly nothing more impossible that Mark can't accomplise than this :D ;) you have earned my support.
Hi, Mark. This was a great video. Brought smile on my face, especially the 10 seconds drawing. It reminds me of the fun I had while doing some super quick sketches of my mother last summer and she was like "why do I always look like a truck driver on your drawings!"

Thank you :)
please draw doraemon haha
That was incredible, Mark! I'm going to have to try this myself.
I love this challenge! it exercises the artist's knowledge of what makes a character. to do it in one minute or 10 sec. you really need to know what the most important features of a character is. So it is sort of like studying for 10 min. shrinking down the details in 1 min. and getting the most essentials in the 10 sec.
Why did he use the stopwatch instead of the timer... Which was literally the button right next to it?
Because it doesn't matter
He knew when to stop
2FaceTobi But it woulda been easier and simpler to just click another button.
Be even stopwatches on the smart phones will start going into negative numbers. On my video I posted, my ten minute one did that
In my mind, it's just to reduce pressure. It's easier to approach a deadline when time is moving forward to it and doesn't attack the mind as much. But when it's counting down to it the pressure suddenly rises and quality and focus immediately go out the drain for just pure work.
On the other hand Mark might've just not wanted to bother with the timer.
This is my first markcrilley video and I subbed because it is so good, and I'm inspired to try and make a comic:)
Thank you!
I have the first two Drawing Manga books, now I MUST get the new one! This was also really awesome.
Thank you so much!
i really want them books they seem awesome-no beyond awesome i must have them all including brodys ghost great video mark you've helped my drawing ability's so much thank you if it weren't for you i'd still be drawing stick men XD thanks for the great videos mark.
ive noticed that your mastering manga books have become pretty in my local arts and crafts and arts stores this past two years
This video demonstrates that time and dedication to a piece can be just as important as the skills of the artist.
This was great, you should do more challenges Mark ^^
Did you see my "scribbling challenge?" ua-cam.com/video/ORa66PK2dWc/v-deo.html
I did now, thanks :D
Gaks gives me a Wall-e vibe haha or maybe a shaun tan vibe
But Crilley invented Gaks before Wall-e existed.
I know that i just think its cool they are similar who knows maybe disney drew inspiration from gaks to make wall-e haha
wall-e is a copy of johnny 5......
I now want Crilley to draw WALL-E.
I too got a Wall-e feeling. In the same awwww, a cute robot who apparently collects things-way.
+Adam Heeley, aww, Number 5 alive. One of my favorite childhood movies.
It actually came out when I was a child.
you really seem to enjoy doing the video yourself..do more please
Coming soon!

This is really creative, man. First video I've ever taken the time to thumbs up. Subbed!
I didn't realize until the books came up, I watched this channel over 2 years ago in math class (don't worry - I knew the class material). My art has changed SO MUCH in that time. Pretty sure this channel had an effect on my style back then.
You should do the blind folded challenge!! It can be real time like Baylee Jae's blind folded challenges
this video appeared on my recommended list, I watched it because I thought I already saw that character somewhere and I remembered I used to read akiko as a kid! it was my favourite book series 😁
Thank you!
The Drawing Lesson has come to Denmark!! (Well i ordered over Amazon, but stilll...) I really love it :D
Thank you Christina! ^^
Amazing challange, really entertaining :D
This is so hilarious that I just had to leave this comment, you are a genius mister! I love you and please don't stop doing what you're doing.
Is it pronounced "poo-g" or "pah-g" or neither?
subscribed you since 50k :D duude 2,6kk grats to you! Youre a legend!
Thanks for sticking with me for so many years :)
haha mate i love your drawings ^.^
i saw mastering manga in a local store....i freaked the freak out!!! I called my friend and then we freaked the freak out together!! Im going to buy it soon as i get money. We almost never get anything good art related in these parts. (sophie chan's book is right next to yours as well!! My prayers were answered)
Thank you Lydia! ^^
markcrilley omg you replied *fangirl scream and blushies* you're welcome senpai!
Lydia Stoute cringe
Creative video idea
Thank you Nick
I always hated reading but loved drawing as a kid, but the only books i would ever read in school were Akiko books. i just want to thank you for that. i have like 3 signed books from you when you came to my school, but i dont remember it much :( it was in elementary school. im now in high school. it was at Wilde Elementary. i still think of you as my favorite author and artist.
I don't really know why UA-cam recommend me this.. but I can feel the trill in 1 minute tho-
my 30 minutes looks like your 1 minute fast drawing. Awesome.
Your 1 minute drawing is better than my 10 minute
i think it would be better as 10 minutes, 5 minutes, and 30 seconds :D
I bought the first two Brody's ghost. they're pretty good
Thank you so much!
markcrilley thank you
That was so fun! I'm sure this has been mentioned already, but if you did the timer you wouldn't have to spend extra stress (and time) constantly checking the clock, you could just draw until you hear the alarm go off :P Thanks for another great video!!
Great video!! definitely my favourite video from today's UA-cam fix. Looking forward to the next TEN.ONE.TEN Challange
Thank you!
markcrilley you're so good at drawing! I love drawing and I'm pretty descent at it.

I just finished my edition of the challenge. It's pretty funny at the end. I have to say, this was a very exciting and fun experience. You should try it. Okay thanks for making the video, Mark. Pretty cool. :)
His 10 seconds drawing is still better then my drawing in 1 hour.....
Its Okayy Dugge lol same
His 1 minute is better then I can do in 10 mins.
His 10 second is better than what i can do... ever...
+Dr. Sh0tgun Aaaannndddd thats a lie . Unless you are drawing with your feet
Underrated Commentator the comments are annoying
How do you record your videos? Like where do you place your camera so it's not in your face while drawing?
I'm assuming the camera's facing straight down, mounted slightly above him so it's not in his way, and zoomed in so you don't see him and the surrounding area...
Moot Maybe.. But he must have an extremely tall tripod for the camera, the then what if he bumps it? and you'd think the quality of the video would be grainy if it was zoomed in :/
+Teeg Monkey Actually, the camara is right in front of him, then when he goes back to edit the video, he just flips the images right side up. I wondered that myself as well, but someone in the comments clarrified that for me. Hope I did too! 😊
Deborah Mutombo I'm still really confused? I don't get it...
Is the camera facing him? What position is the camera in? and what do you mean by flipping the images ? Basically, I want to know specifics.
This was great! Entertaining and educational. Please do more! :D
love the video! can do a updated version of how to draw a realistic eye?
