Moving out of California. I grew up there and most of my family still lives there. A friend's dad passed away and he offered to sell me his dad's house as a joke. I asked how much also as a joke and it kind of snowballed from there. Now I live in rural Tennessee on 30 acres of forest land in a 4 bedroom house that costs me $600 a month. I've worked remotely from home for the same company based in Germany since I was 20, so as long as I have working electricity and internet, I can make ends meet easily from anywhere. I hired a live-in housekeeper just so I can have someone to talk to besides my 2 cats.

That the principal at my elementary said I had low self-esteem. My mom dismissed it because "How can he have low self-esteem? He's so intelligent!"
Yeah, she was very dismissive of the idea of depression and self esteem issues, thinking I just needed "a dose of reality". It ended up making me think that I was just lazy and I couldn't do things and that all those talks about how smart I was were all lies.
The "dose of reality" however, came many years later to her with my suicide attempt. At that point is when she finally decided to start looking into the issues and luckily I'm doing much better now.

I had a lot of people telling me that antidepressants, ADHD meds and the like were crutches that made you into a zombie. So, I got smacked a lot, had a really hard time dealing with people, went through all kinds of interpersonal issues, and so on. Then at 39 I got put on an antidepressant to control the side effects of another medication. It didn't work for that, but a lot of the fog in my mind was gone, moreso each time the dose was stepped up. Then i tried to go back to school, and fell on my face. No concentration whatsoever. It took over a year, but I finally got on ADHD meds, and this completely changes the game. I don't get anywhere near as distracted, I can get things done, and don't lock up feeling overwhelmed anymore when I have a pile of tasks.
So yeah, use the crutches. That's the point. You don't power your way through a broken leg, you shouldn't be expected to power through a broken brain.

Story 1 dad was awesome. Sure he could have told op why and made it easier but some women don't want everyone to know they're going through that. Ops dad let op think he was ta so his wife didn't have to worry what op really thought.
