Biomechanics Gurus are KILLING YOUR GAINS ("Squats are highly overrated for 90% of people" 🙄)

  • According to Ben Yanes (‪@The_Modern_Meathead‬ ) aka the Modern Meathead, "barbell squatting is highly overrated for 90% of the population," and anyone with even the tiniest smidge of length to their femurs will not be able to build their quads with squats because they "force the individual to work around the bar." As a result squats do nothing but create "crippling back pain" and fail to build any appreciable leg muscle in these individuals.
That's quite an assertion! Especially considering it was done primarily in meme format on Instagram, with little substance to any of the actual claims beyond trying to be cute.
In today's video we analyze Ben' Yane's post on barbell squatting and why he believes it be a poor exercise choice for 90% of the population. We touch on...
-Why I believe Ben makes "edgy" clickbait content like this
-How he is just trying to get you to replace one form of dogma with another (his own)
-Why the term "barbell squats" is so generic that it's meaningless
-How different barbell squatting VARIATIONS (of which there are countless) can be made to better suit different individuals
-Why even if Ben's assertions here are 100% true (which they aren't) they're still a moot point when analyzing the overall fitness picture anyway
-The real reason why people have issues with barbell squatting
Lots to digest today! I hope you enjoy the video and find it informative. Please remember to smash the like button before you go, leave me a friendly comment down below, and share the video around to spread the good word!
Please remember, the more engagement we can get on a video like this the more eyes that will ultimately see it, and that will go a long way towards helping combat BS in the fitness industry.

Fun fact. He actually built most of his muscle base with barbell movements. When people called him out for being weak he posted video from 3 years ago where he deadlifted 600,benched 315x3 and squatted 11x405. Thats actually pretty strong but it only proves opposite of what hes promoting because he built most of his muscles with barbell movements and when he transitioned to training with mostly cables he made zero hypetrophy gains. If anything I think he actually looked even bigger on that older video where he was doing powerlifts than how he looks now.

I don’t lift for hypertrophy (it’s a welcome side effect, but it’s not the purpose). I lift for strength and performance. Barbell squats (back and front) have returned mobility and strength in my 50’s that I thought had gone forever. It has also contributed to some mass increase in my legs, but that’s incidental to the performance benefits. I’m glad to be one of the lucky 10 percent.

Im actually walking around like a “tank” thanks to pin squats. SSB squats not available for me but Smith machine squats as a secondary exercise seems to help. No way I’m getting that mobility back but the Smith machine keeps me upright and activates the lower quad just enough. Pin squats and Smith machine squats if you want to keep it simple 👍

In the combat sports strength/conditioning meta, there is TONS of absolute farcical silliness like this hired into the conversation by paranoid old school coaches who broscienced their way to victory in an era and sport where sports science was essentially absentee.
You get the "lifting weights is bad because you get too big and slow... drop and give me 100 pushups" type of shit (like, multiple face palms for this one... pushups IS resistance training, only training upper body, only high rep ranges...)
They hate basic squats because they're not 'sport specific enough' so they'll literally do Bosu Ball one legged zercher fuck-ups that combine the motion of a takedown and a strike in one thinking they're somehow making an optimal movement...
oh my god, there are SO many Joel Seedmans in this space, and I am constantly battling with other coaches to stop confusing students and just teach them the basics. We are talking 16 year old athletes who've never backsquatted before being taught all this random nonsense... run before you can walk to the extreme. And the few useful sport-specific movements they do do, they have ZERO idea about programming them and again have anti-truthful ideas on how things apply.
I hear stuff like, "well, you're a bigger dude so you should do more reps to lose weight while you lift, but this guy here is skinny so we want him doing singles". It makes ZERO sense.
Just a PSA: if you're knowledgeable on fitness and want to enter an area where they are literally DECADES behind on basic sport science principles for strength + conditioning, start applying to be a coach for fighters. I promise you that things that are totally basic to you will be revolutionary to the people around you and you will have more knowledge than top-level coaches who charge hundreds $ per hour without even understanding anything about the sports. It's that bad.
They still punch dumbells in the air expecting to increase the power in their punches not understanding that there is no force except wind resistance in the pressing motion. 😳😳😳

    • @EnkiriElite
      @EnkiriElite  11 місяців тому +1

I have gathered this to be the case with S&C for fighting just from context and anecdotes such as yours.
But being as how I know nothing about fighting I have tried to stay in my lane by not talking about it, even though some of the stuff I have seen/heard is outwardly very stupid and/or useless.
Building strength, power, and muscle is a universal concept, and those methods apply equally effectively to nearly every single sports. Granted, you will obviously have some idiosyncrasies from sport to sport depending on specifics, but training a martial artist the exact same way you train a running back would be pretty damn effective in reality.

    • @Dementia.Pugilistica
      @Dementia.Pugilistica 11 місяців тому

@EnkiriElite exactly, yeah. There are some nuances when making a wholistic program that incorporates all the skill work, cardio, drilling, etc for the sport and the peaking and periodization is different (this is also a very very weak area for them... many of them have never even heard of these things) but any sport with explosive power output demand is pretty universal to train for, especially given it's mostly amateur athletes we're talking about. Like, sub 200 pound squatters. Not competent pro athletes looking to optimize every 1% they can squeeze out of things (at least where I have coached).
Since I started boxing and weightlifting at the same time as a teenager, I existed in both cultures and was able to realize just how much further along the strength athletes were on everything regarding s&c... but it's also why I feel like I have a unique edge in this market to really help out a lot of people 🤞

The point on the dogma is interesting. Everyone adopts a form of dogma. And really all that means being Anti-ADD in the gym. An issue with all these fitness influencers is everyone says variants of either the same shit, or they all contradict the hell out of each other with different random shit. There’s so much noise out in this space that it’s near impossible to concentrate and dedicate to a certain aspect of training without being stalled out by more eye grabbing non-sense.
I’ve been the victim of training ADD for years and only the last 3 or so have I been able to get past it a bit, but even still a lot of crap is out there to distract or dissuade you from one thing to another and the only thing you can really do as someone who wants to accomplish a training goal is to just say “fuck it”, choose something, and say no to everything else until you get what it is you’re after. It’s so hard to do that but it’s honestly become necessary and I don’t think general fitness individuals realize how important that is. It is the most maddening thing to me honestly.

Literally just calf raises with a pause at the bottom every rep and try to sink it lower and lower. That was all it took. And for even more quad bias I elevate my heels, which is something everyone can do, which makes quad biased barbell squatting 100% accessible and viable for the vast majority of people.

I mean, it's not necessarily "unfounded," as I am 100% sure matt is basing it on his personal experiences. He should try slightly lighter high-rep squats and tell us his back hurts but he doesn't feel it in his quads. I think even many who are solely chasing hypertrophy avoid high-rep squats simply because they are extremely uncomfortable. However, it seems like they worked okay for Platz. Not only are squats good for mass, they can also build muscle endurance and mental toughness.

the pendulum always swings back and forth between "barbells are the only way" and "barbells are bad" when the truth is that barbells are just one of many effective training modalities for various goals. What matters so much more is intent. If you're doing an ultra low bar squat to parallel with massive hip involvement and chasing numbers and you're wondering why your quads aren't growing that big, it's not the barbell's fault. It's how you're using it. In fact, I'd almost be willing to wager that a lot of people's mistaken resentment towards barbells comes from a similar experience. I remember when the circlejerk was "if you wanna get big, get strong on barbell compounds". In pursuit of these standards, I ended up with a double bodyweight bench and still had a bird chest and small arms, or at least way smaller than you'd expect someone with that bench to look. If you ever heard "theres no one who benches 315 with a small chest" that's bullshit, I was an example. Then I lifted almost exclusively with machines for a time and my chest blew up in size. For a brief time, I thought barbells were just bad for building muscle. Then I came to realize my training was the problem, not the tool. I was maximizing leverages, taking the widest grip and biggest arch possible, perfecting my leg drive, all for the purpose of hoisting more weight. Had I taken a more moderate form with the intent of stimulating the chest, and taken my barbell skullcrushers seriously instead of sandbagging them, I would have seen a lot more growth in my chest and arms from the start.
I really do think a lot of people had a similar experience:
"I wanna get jacked!" -> "just get strong on barbell compounds brah" -> *chases numbers, reaches high numbers but doesnt get jacked* -> "wow it must be the barbells fault machines are better"
Now the new wave of optimalbrah lifters is kind of trying to capitalize on the disillusioned lifters who listened to rippetoe and reddit parrots back in 2016 with another stupid reactionary view "look if everything isn't biomechanically perfect according to my calculations its shit 🤓🤓🤓"
I want everyone to understand: lift with fucking intent! Barbells are a great training implement. They aren't god's gift, and they aren't bad either. They are a tool for you to achieve your goals that has been demonstrated to be effective by countless lifters for a wide variety of fitness goals. But you need to actually use them in the proper way to achieve what you want to achieve! Not everything has to be "optimal biomechanics" dude. As long as you have a WORKABLE form that allows you to target the goals you want to target effectively.
(commenting while still watching the video - I'm assuming you'll also say a lot of the points I did. Rip apart these optimal gurus!!)
EDIT: yup I'm almost thru the vid and looks like we're totally on the same page here lmao

I don't necessarily disagree with the main point of his post, but rather the execution. Rather than saying, "Hey, some people aren't built for back squats, so if you are one of those people, hack squats, leg presses, and pendulum squats are great alternatives to test out and see if you find value from them.", he goes the dogmatic route and proposes this arbitrary "90% of people" are not fit for back squat. It's baffling to me how people can see this and fall for this cult of "optimization." Each post Yanes's aggravates me beyond belief because I am certain he is aware that he could and SHOULD display information in a way that isn't dogmatic but he chooses to out of self promoting motivations.

You're taking them out of context. Using proper mechanics is a good thing and has had a positive effect on the industry. There's no need to demonise movements but it's just a fact that the barbell squat isn't great for a lot of people, for others it can be fantastic. And this is dependent on proportions. The content from n1 and Kassem is really good and isn't making absolute statements, uses a lot of nuance. But sure there are lot of people misapplying this as well.

A hack squat is more simple and easier to perform than a Barbell Squat as well as having all those mechanical benefits.
Even the cliche Kneeling Lat Pulldown, this is super simple to perform and doesn't require as much technique as the classic lat pulldown which most people butcher. etc.
