Regarding everyone on the boat being ripped apart; there was originally a side plot about a pack of raptors sneaking onboard the ship, and then escaping in San Diego. That whole thing was eventually scrapped pretty late in production to focus on the T-Rex, but the boat part was already filmed. And thus we end up with arguably one of the biggest plot holes in movie history!

Well there's no way the T-rex was able to return to it's hold and close the doors on itself after killing everyone.
My goofy theory is that something else was on-board, caused the carnage, and escaped, either by air or sea. The Rex tried to break out in a weak, tranquilized stupor when it hears the commotion, which is why it was unable to get out at first, and why the guys arm was on the control holding it down. The Rex simply went back to sleep after the ship fell silent again, until it wakes up crashing into San Diego.

Fun fact, Julianne Moore's character, Sarah Harding, is the daughter of Dr. Gerry Harding, the veterinarian who was looking after the sick Triceratops in the first movie.
A couple of things to note, Roland Tembo was a big game hunter, yes, but not a poacher. There's a scene in the script that was cut from the film, but included in the graphic novel adaptation, that gives you a much clearer picture of his character. Another deleted/cut scene included a slightly drunk Ludlow stumbling around while talking to Tembo, and falling onto the infant rex, breaking its leg. Daddy rex crushing Ludlow's leg in order to incapacitate him so that the infant can kill him is another example of poetic justice.
Steven Spielberg himself has stated that there are things about the production of this movie that he wishes he'd done differently. The first Jurassic Park was a bit of a passion project, as he loves dinosaurs and was a good friend of Michael Crichton, but he's admitted that with hindsight he feels like his approach to directing The Lost World was one of complacency rather than enthusiasm. Most of his energy and passion at the time went into the making of Saving Private Ryan.
As a dinosaur enthusiast this is probably my favorite film of the franchise, though I agree that the first movie is better. I just enjoy seeing the Tyrannosaurs portrayed as nurturing, protective parents, especially the father. This was rather new and radical idea at the time, as the predominant theory only a few years earlier was that predatory dinosaurs didn't care for their young at all.

That scene at the start with the little girl being attacked is taken directly from the first book.
The original book is a horror novel.
It has the girl being attacked, stories and legends of newborn babies being eaten alive, and even an actual event where you see a baby being eaten.
The book talks on several occasions about the smaller dinosaurs reaching the mainland, and have been running amok for years.
The thing with the boat, is that a raptor, maybe 2 or 3, managed to get on the boat without anyone knowing.
Also, note when Dieter gets killed... he opens the cattle prod, and the Compy runs away... yet when he first used the cattle prod, it didn't run, because it didn't know what he was doing.
The Compies have been following Dieter the whole movie since he attacked one of them. Basically following his group, and nobody knew it.
    Once he's alone, they attack.

The story with the hunter, Roland Tembo, is better explained by a scene that didn't make it into the film. Its watchable on UA-cam. It shows a scene from early in the film when his partner Ajay Sindhu (the guy who was yelling at the hunters to not go into the long grass) comes to recruit him in Africa for this mission.
At this point in his life Roland is retired and hasn't seen his life long partner Ajay in years. They've hunted every big game animal on Earth and Roland is essentially just languishing in a bar, slowly wasting his life away because he feels like all his adventures and challenges are over and that there's nothing left for him. So when his best friend comes to him with a chance to hunt the ultimate predator, the T-Rex, he agrees to join Ajay on the mission.
But.... after everything goes to shit and he gets word that Ajay was killed by the Raptors, he no longer cares anymore about the hunt because he's realized that it was his friendship with Ajay and the adventures they'd had together that really mattered...and that this whole endeavor was a terrible mistake.

I like the execution of the Pete Postlethwaite character - He has a clearly defined sense of morality, even though it doesn't align particularly with the protagonists. Someone who got excited by bigger challenges is such a selfish motivation but it remains believable and adds a nice bit of world building. I even like how he departs, essentially having reached his own objective, he leaves everyone else to die. Just a genuinely interesting character

    • @underAtack
      @underAtack 2 роки тому +11

He left because he didn't get to achieve his objective - the male T-rex was caught alive, because his lethal rounds were stolen (or sabotaged...I can't remember which) by Nick and he could no longer kill it in a "sporting" manner; it was the fact that he had not only missed out on what he considered the pinnacle of achievement in his life, but had also ultimately led his best friend to death with nothing to show for the sacrifice.
Pete Postelthwaite acted this complex character so superbly that you can be relieved that he made it out alive while still feeling satisfied that he was justly denied his desire which allied him with the InGen poachers.

The dude in the beard and cowboy hat is based on Bob Baker, also known as "Dr. Dino." At the time these movies were made he was one of the world's foremost experts on dinosaurs and actually served as the technical adviser for both films. He was the guy who successfully argued that birds should be reclassified as a subset dinosaurs. Tim even references a book by "a guy named Baker" in the first movie when he's fan-boying over Dr. Grant.

The bearded paleontologist wearing the cowboy hat is an homage to Robert Bakker, one of the world's most famous dinosaur experts. So this is one of the few Jurassic Park movies to question your morality, and maybe it was in Poor's taste to do that in Jurassic Park but I respect this movie for it all the more.
The hunters who are clearly here to do the wrong thing of bringing these dinosaurs off the island also the ones who genuinely help our heroes get off the island. Meanwhile, our heroes who are trying to save the dinosaurs also end up getting lots of people killed on the island. Especially Sarah who carries with her a blood-soaked baby T-Rex blood. And it is solely because of our heroes that both parties are trapped on the island.
I also like the conclusion at the end that the real evil is the corporatism behind everything. The hunters are humanized by the end but the big corporate entity funding them is killed off.

    • @Riku-zv5dk
      @Riku-zv5dk 2 роки тому +3

Sarah at least doesn't have a choice really, being that she doesn't have a change of clothes and the group is in a hurry so they can't stop and give their clothes a proper cleaning. Nick is more to blame, deliberately sabotaging Roland's weapon after the groups had joined up which forced Roland to use the dart gun instead, leading to the whole San Diego. Roland meanwhile, despite being a big game hunter, is actually really personable and has a strict personal code, goes out of his way to help the other team and is mainly focused on getting his men off the island. Both parties have their good and bad members.

    • @lukekelly5075
      @lukekelly5075 2 роки тому +1

@@Riku-zv5dk I don't mind Nick removing the bullets from the weapon. it is an inconvenience that gets people killed, but Roland (the bad ass that he is) manages to make a do and while that does lead to the San Diego incident and also means that the T-Rex gets to live.
But you know what you're absolutely right. Nick leads to the San Diego incident, once again our altruistic hero has caused people to get hurt. Another great example of questioning the consequences to moral actions
But Roland points out to Sarah that she is covered in T-Rex blood, and she does mention that T-Rex have some of the best sense of smell out of all the dinosaurs, AND SHE DOESN'T THROW THE JACKET AWAY. WHAT A COLOSSAL DUMBASS BITCH. Sorry, that really angers me.

@@lightup6751 no worries no offense taken and also not flaming you. Personally I wouldn't "blame" it on the Gen Z and more on society itself. The Gen Z children just grow up in that kind of environment. It is good that people think more about the consequences of their words/doings although I would say that is only true on certain aspects and also not in general. Yes e.g. environmental topics become bigger now and finally got to the ear of the mainstream but I do remember well that we already had "green days" in the 90s or early 00s just the people who were going there and arguing for certain things were looked at in a rather strange way. Scientists in the 70s already told the UN about the consequences but the pressure was still far in the future so a lot of time and remember the 90s were also deeply imprinted by the end of the Cold War. After such frightening times it seems logical to me that you go into a period of enjoying/happy-go-lucky kind of thinking. Also remember that we were all younger back then. If you grew up in the 90s chances are that you just didn't encounter these topics because you were still young. Smartphones and Internet weren't there and most children wouldn't watch the news with their parents. But I do think its good that we don't commonly drink alcohol at work and think its okay to slap the butt of the secretary or those sorts of things. Just like we do not burn witches anymore like back in the day. Why? Because those generations also learned. It might be a slow process for humanity but we are getting there bit by bit :D Do I like how oversensitive the US has become? No! But luckily I live in Germany where that is not happening as much. I also don't say that you can't hunt at all but animals do experience pain, stress, panic, etc. so I am against hunting/fishing just for fun for example. If you hunt something do it to eat it and respect the life you've taken. In the movie those hunters seemed to me always more like a bunch of illegal hunters with an any means necessary approach just to put a trophy somewhere and that I cannot agree with.

The small dinos that attacked the girl in the beginning was a scene in the first book. They are compsognathus (Compys) and had a desensitizing venom that puts the prey to sleep. In the first book, they ate a baby in a crib at the beginning. They are also the ones that killed Hammond.
There was a Far Side cartoon where cavemen named the "thing at the end of the tail" on a stegosaurus a "Thagomizer, in the memory of the late Thag SImmons." Real Paleontologists now informally use the term.
The only way to get into the wheelhouse and leave a hand on the wheel is a small enough dino to get through the door, but big enough to sever the hand cleanly. We only see the T-rex. There are 100% raptors in SoCal.

The big game hunter says he’s spent enough time in the company of death for two reasons: 1, he knows that what ingen is planning is going to be a huge disaster that will cost more lives and 2, he has reached the pinnacle of his hunting career, capturing the ultimate apex predator. He has conquered his highest personal challenge, which is specifically why he compared it to climbing Everest. No, the climber doesn’t kill the mountain, and he had no intention of climbing the t-rex. It’s called a metaphor. I know the movie needed some bad guys but game hunters are the most influential contributors and activists for preservation, so don’t go so hard on em.

Decent enough sequel to the franchise thanks largely to Goldblum & the dinos. Fun facts: The Venture (the boat that crashes the pier) is a nod to the original KING KONG (which had the same name of the ship that brings the crew to Skull Island and Kong back to NYC); the poor bastard who gets eaten by the T-Rex while attempting to flee in the San Diego street is the film's screenwriter David Koepp (and the character is called Poor Bastard); and again darker and more lean & mean than the original.

Because, this is my favorite movie of all time, I leave two fun facts here.
    1. The ship, that carries the T-rex to San Diego is called SS Venture. The ship that carried King Kong to New York had the same name.
    2. There is a reason for the over aggressive behavior of the raptors, but it’s just explained in the book. In this universe, raptors are social animals. But because they had no parental guidance, they show unnatural behavior. That’s why they attack each other and everything in sight.

Fun fact. The spikes on the tails of Stegosaurus (Stegosaurii?) are called Thagomizers by palaeontologists. It wasn’t their proper name (may not have even had one), but it came from a Gary Larson cartoon where cavemen were discussing those spikes and calling them Thagomizers after their buddy ‘Thag’ who got puréed by one. Since a lot of Gary’s quirky humour hit the spot with many scientific minds, this bit of humour stood out and the spikes became known (semi-) officially as Thagomizers.

Game Hunters contrary to popular belief are actually good guys, and they are the opposite of poachers.
They pay high fees to hunt that help pay to maintain sanctuaries or facilities. They are even needed sometimes to pick off troublesome animals. For instance older Elephants that kill of young Elephants for mates despite the fact that they are infertile.
Poachers just kill for animal parts and money without paying to maintain the ecosystem/facilities. They also kill indiscriminately.

1:14 "and it's like 30 years into the future", 2:41 One thing you two will find or should note is that the Jurassic timeline corresponds to reality- what year the movie came out is when it takes place (though since Dominion was originally slated to come out this year it might be set in 2021 instead of 2022). This movie came out 4 years after the first, so that's how long it's been. ;)
8:37 Burke was the paleontologist guide for the raiders, so he was moreso confirming and explaining the Pachy's anatomy and behavior than studying it.
10:12 They didn't just chain the baby down. In a deleted screenplay, they had approached it, and Ludlow was so drunk he stumbled and fell on the baby, breaking its leg. That's why it's moaning in pain.
20:39 Maybe not so much "people" died on the island, but because his partner Ajay died in the tall grass scene.

    1. The little Compys have poisonous bites. That's how they overwhelm that guy even though they're just nipping at him.
    2. The T-Rexes attack the caravan because, by bringing the baby there, the people made that area part of the Rexes' territory. They were repelling intruders.

    "The sequels"
We can think of "Jurassic Park" as a self contained story, because that's the way Michael Crichton (R.I.P.) tought of it originally. Partially, because the film was a commercial success, a sequel was demanded (by producers, both in the form of a novel and in a film) and that's why we got this one and all the other ones (I liked The Lost World, but yeah, the plot is less consistent as we near the end). After The Lost World, we can also argue that the scientific and sort of realistic approach to the plot (in the sense of "how dinousaurs would fit into this world and how humankind will react to discovering what's been done?") is abandoned and we focus more in the survival drama of personal stories (I love Jurassic Park III, I think it makes interesting choices about characters and settings; but yeah, without giving spoilers, you can expect the tropes of any survival movie). The film didn't do that great to make any other Jurassic Park films until...
    "Jurassic World trilogy"
As it's been mentioned before: "How many films can be made with the same characters, revolving around an accident in the same place?". The answer could be: "As many as producers see fit" XD. In Jurassic World's favor, it updates a bit more some genetic elements (it's not as accurate as Crichton made it, but it's referenced that the park, the look of the dinosaours and all the revisits exists because of our love for "monsters"); they let go some characters in order to present new ones less focused on the side of philosophy and science (but that still deliver some interesting commentary about humans and their relationship to living things and bussiness) and then went on to explore an element you already mentioned: how people could expect dinosaurs could be contained just in one island. True, all that commentary about animal's rights and the ethics of science is not the main issue there, but it's interesting how the new films seem to have the liberty to explore some kind of obvious scenarios the producers of the first two original films didn't go for. It would be fun to see you reacting to the new films (specially when there is a new film coming out, that's the commercial excuse to go through all of them XD), in case you want to :P.
    "Other films to see..."
If they haven't been suggested, maybe you should take a look at other Michael Crichton's works. The man contributed greatly to define the genre of the tecnothriller in our times (adventures with some degree of accurate science used and explained in the story) and tackled more than one itchy issue in them. Among the works written, directed or adapted by him (or around his novels) there is "The Andromeda Strain", "Disclosure", the original "Westworld" (yep, the plot of the park with robots that think they are living in the west is originally from this man, a concept that would evolve later into Jurassic Park and the current Westworld TV Series ), "Twister", "Congo", "The 13th Warrior", and maybe, if you want, the first seasons of the TV series "ER" (the series spanned for 331 episodes over 15 seasons from 1994 to 2009; as expected, as time went by, drama and other topics took over the story, but the plot of most of the first few seasons sticks closely to Crichton's screenplay, later developed and filmed as a pilot for TV with the help of Steven Spielberg).
And that would be it, nice video and see you in the next one.
