The sequel, Ghostbusters 2, is also great. However - the 2016 movie is not really worth watching.

During the “Dana is possessed” scene, Peter is being deliberately evasive and attempting to get a rise out of Dana, basically paying as little attention to Zuul’s spiritual psychobabble as possible. This is because he’s attempting to get Dana to break through and speak to him. This is based on actual parapsychological training when dealing with a presumably possessed person.
Yeah, one of the few scenes that show Venkman's IS well educated.

Still one of my favorite movie lines ever.
In the decades since the movie was released, I have encountered maybe 4 or 5 opportunities to use that line when someone asked where some stairs go. Every time, it gets a laugh because just about everyone has seen this movie.
It's interesting Simone & George took that as a laugh line - I always saw it as kind of heroic, like "we have no clue where this goes, but we're going up." Murray says it with determination.
Fun fact: The denim guy in the background at 13:07 wasn't an extra, he was just some random guy who got into the shot lmao
About Ray Stantz' "Sorry" sounding very Canadian, well, the actor portraying him, Dan Aykroyd, is himself in fact a Canadian.
Its baffling that they wouldn't know that. I've lived Canada for about 7 years now, and one thing they all take pride in is knowing every famous Canadian person, and they will let you know what town they are from.
I believe Rick Moranis is Canadian, too. He played Bob McKenzie, part of the McKenzie brothers comedy duo who hosted The Great White North.

The thing about Walter peck is that he's completely overstepping his authority. The epa doesn't deal with nuclear. The nuclear regulatory commission would have a few words with the Ghostbusters, but not the epa
The containment unit isn’t nuclear, the proton packs are. His interest in it would be akin to investigating a warehouses storage of toxic materials.
Problem is he’s basically “entering the storage” with a flamethrower and all the toxic materials are explosive.
They also don't even have any "nuclear material". A nuclear accelerator has nothing to do with radioactive isotopes.
The green ghost named "Slimer", is supposed to represent John Belushi, best friend of Dan Ackroyd, who wrote the script. John had died shortly before Dan Ackroyd started the script.
And Akroyd was most DEFINITELY writing the movie with every intention of his BFF Belushi starring alongside him in it. I heard he was even at his typewriter working on the script when he got the call that Belushi had overdosed on a mix of Heroin and cocaine

In-Universe he's the ghost of some rich guy who ate himself to death on the floor he's haunting.
€dit: The librarian worked and was murdered in the library in the 1920's.
Harold was with him writing the script after belushi passed. They based slimer on his roll from animal house and rewrote a lot of posters lines and he threw in what he wanted while filming. I'm sure some is still on the cutting room floor till this day.
Onionhead here. He didn't get the name "Slimer" until the cartoon shortly after the film.
The Green Blob Ghost would go on to be named Slimer. When the Ghostbusters got their own Saturday Morning Cartoon, Slimer became a pet, friend, and ally of the Ghostbusters. As a response to how much kids loved Slimer, he appeared in the sequel in the same role as the cartoon. He hung around the HQ and even helped during the final battle.
He's also may or may not be the ghost of fellow SNL cast member John Belushi

Also had his own flavor of kids drink during that cartoon era as well. "Hi-C Ecto-Cooler"
He's more of a mascot really, kind of like Orko was in HE-MAN, and Snarf in Thundercats.
And yes, Hi-C Ecto Cooler was the BEST, and I miss it.
In the script he was only known as “Onionhead”, because the prop they used apparently smelled pretty bad. It wasn’t until the cartoon did the name Slimer appear.

Also there are 2 sequels - Ghostbusters 2 (which I also love), and the now released Ghostbusters Afterlife, which is pretty much everything Ghostbusters fans have been waiting for since Ghostbusters 2
My favorite line: ‘dogs and cats, living together, mass hysteria.’ (And yes you need to see Groundhog Day.’)
I love that line but it doesn't really make sense, does and cats live together all the time. I myself had a dog and cat when I was little.

@@johnplaysgames3120 Ya I saw a reactor that was horrified at the shotgun scene in Scrooged and someone in the comments posted about how that is a common Looney Toons cartoon trope with Elmer Fudd. Ghostbusters, amongst others, was made when Warner Bros. cartoons were ubiquitous and everyone just got it

The "REAL GHOSTBUSTERS" Cartoon Series from the 80s did a good job on expanding on the mythology... in ways the sequels / reboots never thought to touch on, like "What's actually in the containment system" and "What else is in Tobin's Spirit Guide besides Zuul". Also, Stay Puft isn't a real brand.
@@jeffburnham6611 From what I can see, Stay Puft isn't a real brand now, but it gets licenced out to different companies, currently you get CampFire brand StayPuft Marshmallows and a Tiny Rebel StayPuft Beer.

The cop that lets them out of the cell is also the cop in Die Hard. He also plays a cop in Chuck.
Also, an interesting little fact: Louis, the guy who gets possessed by the keymaster, kept getting locked out of his apartment.
William Atherton, who plays the EPA agent, was also in "Die Hard" playing the TV reporter who gets punched by Holly at the end of the movie.
And a cop on Family Matters.
According to "internet", Reginald VelJohnson played at least 7 different cop roles.
He was the limo driver in Crocodile Dundee! 😎✌🏼
Not only did he play a cop in Chuck, he played the same exact character, Al Powell, as he played in Die Hard. He was the cousin of Big Mike, who was the manager of the Buy More (parody of Best Buy) where Chuck worked as part of the Nerd Herd (a parody of Best Buy's Geek Squad). The show Chuck was known for pop culture references and a whose who of top tier celebrity guest spots, from the Sci-Fi, action movie, and spy thriller genres.

Hearing George relate with Walter Peck informs of how much ground has been lost with the youth since 1984.
The "Go get her, Ray!" line is Venkman getting back at Ray for when Rey got Venkman to talk to The Librarian at the film's start.
I use that line all the time regardless of the actual person's name.
Pretty sure it was improvised as well.
I remember being in the hospital when I was 10 with pneumonia; my Mom rented Ghostbusters and the part with the maid putting the fire out with 409 made me laugh so hard, I had an asthma attack. Good times.

The role of Winston was originally written for Eddie Murphy, but he couldn’t do it because of other projects and they shrunk the role. I always wonder what this movie would have been with Eddie in the cast.

The one who said, "I'm soory." In a very Canadian way was Dan Akroyd (Ray) and he IS Canadian.
The transparency of the gargoyle in that scene was due to how the optical printers back then worked when compositing separate images into one frame(usually when matte paintings, miniatures, and live action are combined).
Another famous example of something being transparent was prior to the 1997 special editions you could see through the frame of the cockpit of the snows speeders during the battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes back.
Ghostbusters 2 is just as great in my opinion. You should check it out in case afterlife references anything from it and you are not totally lost. Great review!

Eh, I wouldn't go as far as to say it's just as good as this one, but it's definitely not deserving of all the hate it used to and still often gets. It's only that way because the first movie was such a perfect movie that it was always going to be impossible to improve on it.
Ya, GB was hard to live up to. But GB2 didnt ruin the story, it continued it the right way. funny and smart

I remember when this movie came out in the 80s, the theme song was on every radio attached to a speaker. In restaurants, gas stations and grocery stores…it was everywhere.
Our music teacher would stop class early on Fridays so we could all dance to Ghostbusters.
Also, I'd recommend "The Last Starfighter" (1984). One of my favorites from childhood! 🙂

Fun fact: in the end when the ghostbusters were all covered in melted marshmallow stuff, Venkman wasn't nearly as much as the others. The reason for that is that the take they used in the final film was the last one they did, and at that point, Bill Murray was so sick of getting smeared with the gunk that he refused but was talked into having just a little on him.
IMHO Was more hilarious that way (Everyone is covered, and somehow Venkman was hardly touched).
I first saw this movie when I was 2 years old, and my mom freaked when she found out, thinking that I was going to have nightmares for weeks or be scarred from it...instead, it became the most reliable means of getting me to sit down and shut up for a couple of hours for much of my childhood. Even at that young age I thought Bill Murray was the funniest thing around, which should've been a gigantic sign that I'd grow up extremely fluent in sarcasm and dry humor (as I still point out to them to this day).
Ghostbusters 2 and Ghostbusters Afterlife are absolutely worth a watch...the 2016 Ghostbusters, not so much, we prefer to act as though that one doesn't exist.
A movie critic called Moviebob did a great retrospective of this film in which he puts into words why this movie is so beloved by children, called “Ghostbusters: Really That Good.”
My brothers and I (I'm the youngest of three) had a recorded VHS with Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters 2, and Beetlejuice on it, and we watched it endlessly. This movie is surely integral to my childhood.

There's even a cameo in Warcraft 3; when you continuously click on a unit, it starts with throwing out voice-overs which often have a lot reference on pop culture (the Human Peasant for example has a lot of phrases from Monty Python's Holy Grail). The Undead Banshee has, among others, 'There's no Banshee, only ZUUL'.
Fun Fact: The scene at 11:15, when Dan Akroyd opened his mouth and the cigarette stuck to his bottom lip made me, a young, impressionable lad, want to start smoking so I could do that trick.
After I started, it took me 17 years to quit smoking.
The producers tried to hire Huey Lewis to write and perform the music for Ghostbusters. The deal fell through, so at the last minute they hired Ray Parker, Jr. In the limited time he had, he came up with the hit that was the theme song for the movie. It was very similar to Huey Lewis's song "I Want a New Drug." Lewis sued for copyright violation and won. If you listen to the two songs you'll hear the similarity.
Stay Puft Marshmallows was a fictional brand that was invented for the movie. They're now a real product. You can get them at Walmart, though for some reason they're not available on Amazon.
One of my favorite lines: "It sounds like you've got at least two or three people in there already."
As soon as I saw you guys were reviewing Ghostbusters I had to stop & watch because Ghostbusters is probably my favorite movie ever...I just love it so much!!! John Belushi was originally cast to play Venkman, but sadly he passed away from a drug overdose before he could take the role 😞
This is legit one of my favorite movies ever, so it's always nice to see people giving it some love.
Interesting note: Bill Murray's part was originally meant to be played by the late John Belushi, and the green 'slimer' ghost they catch in the hotel was written in as a tribute to him.
Also the Winston part was supposed to be bigger and was meant for Eddy Murphy but he turned it down

A classic masterpiece of horror and comedy! Great reaction! Oh and Dan Akroyd is Canadian. That's why he had the accent, and so is Rick Moranis. This was shot in New York City and some stage work in locations and stage work in LA. Stay Puft is a fictional brand made for this movie, haha. Thanks, guys!

Ghostbusters 2 is great as well, you should definitely watch that one. The 2021 movie is an entertaining new addition to the series (takes place in the same universe). The 2016 one will leave you feel disappointed about the wasted potential. Could have been a fun movie if it had a decent script and didn't ignore the earlier movies.
Ikr. As much as people want to shout "chauvinist!" if you didn't like that movie, I was actually excited by the idea of a new one with those actors in it. I assumed they were going to be people who purchased a Ghostbusters franchise and were trying to make it work or something. Then the first trailer dropped and immediately indicated it would be a reboot that ignored the previous movies and I started feeling a little iffy about it. Then the rest of the trailer played and I saw that they were leading with barf and fart humor followed up with the exact thing that makes so many SNL skits unbearable: constant shouting taking the place of actual jokes. I still thought I'd give it a chance but, yeah, no. It had moments but just wasn't funny.
Also, not to be that guy but why, in 2016, did the three white women get to be super smart scientists and whatnot while the one black woman had to be the "street-wise" non-scientist. As long as you're rebooting anyway, seemed like the perfect chance to go a little more color-blind with the casting rather than sticking to old-ass stereotypes.
All in all, that movie didn't die because "men hate women." That movie died because it wasn't good. And it didn't help that the cast and crew just attacked anyone who called it out. Just a bungled mess all around.
Simone's face is so wonderfully expressive! Watching her is a show in itself! ;-)
The EPA guy Peck, was the reporter in Die Hard. He got the role in Diehard from his annoyances in Ghostbusters
A lot of people skip over this: The reason you're not supposed to look at the traps is that there was the possibility of them pulling your soul out through your eyes. Superstitious belief refer to the eyes as the "doorway to the soul." Dan Aykroyd is neck deep in Occult studies in real life, and strove to be as accurate to those beliefs as possible. Thus the concern for looking at the traps while in use (not to mention the more mundane issue of the bright light emitting from the traps that could be potentially blinding. Also, yes Dan Aykroyd is Canadian, thus his "I'm sorry" sounding Canadian.
I always thought it was just that the light from the trap was so bright it presented a danger of temporary or permanent blindness.
One of the best movies ever made, so creative, a kind of parody to all the horror movies at this time.
The sequel is good, not so good as the first, but definitely okay to watch.
I liked the second just as much as (maybe even a little better than) the first. I suspect it's because I only watched the 1st one once as a kid and didn't remember much, so I only really experienced both as an adult. People who grew up with a movie and anticipate a sequel are notoriously unlikely to like the sequel (or at least find it inferior). That's why the franchises in which that wasn't the case are so famous for it (Alien and Terminator most notably).
The guy in jeans passing behind the news reporter was actually a random dude passing, who wasn't aware there was a movie in the making.
The Director thought the shot rendered good and kept it.
Fun fact: Both Dan Ackroyd & the late Harold Ramis were both very interested in the occult in real life which helped inspire the making of this movie.
This was amazing! You're both so much fun!! Some random facts you might find interesting:
- Eddie Murphy was supposed to be the 4th Ghostbuster, but chose to do Beverly Hills Cop instead. He had just had a hit with Dan Aykroyd (Trading Places) and I don't think they've worked together again since Eddie said no.
- Bill Murray's role was written for John Belushi, who died before they could film. He was Dan Aykroyd's best friend. Slimer (the ghost that's binge eating) is supposed to be John.
- The earthquake scene is actually filmed in New York City, it's not a set. The moving ground was built directly on the street. My dad was an extra.😜
The sequel lacks the dry humor and fun of this one, sadly. Still, this movie is amazing and your reaction is wonderful. Comedy suits you both.
Eddie Murphy's participation is debatable. His, Dan's and Ivan's stories don't match up. Ivan was involved in the casting process, including casting Moranis and Weaver, and he said Eddie Murphy was never considered.
@@jedijones Dan wrote the script and both he and Eddie say he was the guy they wanted. It might be that Murphy said no before casting started.
You guys should definitely watch Ghostbusters 2. It's a great movie, that I personally love just as much as the original, just for different reasons.
Because the first movie was such a phenomenon, you're always going to have people who will say "well the sequel wasn't as good as the first", but everyone I know who has seen Ghostbusters 2 says that they like it, and I even know a few people who say they like it _more_ than the first one.
GB2 is my fave. Also the ecto 1A looks better

Dana's apartment is 55 Central Park West.. Course, the top of the building was extended by matte painting into how it appears in the film.. But on top of the REAL building is a rooftop apartment that once belonged to famed designer Calvin Kline..
Canadians well represented here - Ivan Reitman, Rick Moranis, Dan Aykroyd. Lots of great comedy talent in Canada in the 80s.
I saw this in the theater the summer it was released (1984). It was absolutely amazing then, and looks suprisingly great to this day. It has aged VERY well.

Stay Puft isn't a real brand, as far as I know. The character's appearance was made as a combination of the Pilsbury Doughboy, the Michelin tire man and Bob's Big Boy.
Earlier in the movie, there is a package of Stay Puft marshmallows in Dana's groceries.
You should watch Ghostbusters 2, it's almost as good as the first. The 2016 reboot you can skip unless you like SNL humor over the dry humor of the first one. The newest is essentially a spiritual sequal to the first two and ignores the 2016 version.
The sad thing is at the time this was SNL humor.
I watched the 2016 version for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I got my first laugh within five minutes.....and that was it. I reeeaally wanted to like it but just got so bored.
I can't promote the newest Ghostbuster: Afterlife movie enough. I was certainly surprised at how good it was.
I would ignore everything after Ghostbusters 2. The new one was pretty bad. The first half of the new one is a teen angst movie with the second a retelling of the first movie with added plot holes.

Harold Ramis tends to write fast paced “efficient” screenplays.
“Army of Darkness” is the same, just “go, go, go”, without any fluff or filler.
Dan Ackroyd is a Canadian so his Candian-sounding "sorry" shouldn't be too surprising. So is Rick Moranis ("the Keymaster"). Moranis was a member of the Second City comedy troupe from Toronto that went on to create a Canadian television sketch comedy show called SCTV ("Second City Television") that ran between 1976 and 1984. SCTV is where Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas created their iconic, beer-addled, Canadian brothers, Bob and Doug McKenzie (who would later be the main characters of the awesome cult movie, "Strange Brew"). Back in the 80s, it used to take forever for a film to come to the pay channels (HBO, etc) after it played in theaters. HBO also used to do an unannounced movie at midnight on Christmas eve as a gift to subscribers. One year (probably 1984), they did Ghostbusters, months before its normal cable premiere. I had stayed up to see what movie they were showing, while my parents went to bed. So I got to watch Ghostbusters, alone in our darkened living room way ahead of anyone else. Good times!
I don't think there's anything specifically pointing to ghosts in this movie as being the spirits of the dead, although it would lend a certain 'moral complexity' to what the Ghostbusters were actually doing! Most of them are rather apparitions or phenomena, not exactly associated with ghosts as we originally think of them, except for a few (librarian, cab driver)

First generation National Lampoons and SNL cast members and writers (Ramis and Akroyd) wrote this. Which explains why this was so clean. I actually love Ghostbusters II and it's soundtrack is incredible, I feel it's underrated. Ghostbusters Afterlife filled me with joy. I cried.
Yes, GB2 is worth watching.
I saw GB: Afterlife a week or so ago. I know some people don't like it, but I thought it was pretty good. As long as you stop expecting it to be another clone of the first two GB movies and accept it for what it is, it's worth seeing.
Afterlife has a 95% user rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Most people like it.
I don't care what critics say, Afterlife was amazing. A "30 years later" sequel done right.
I think, tho it is never spelled out, that the effect of the crossing of the streams happens inside the portal, hence destroying THAT dimension instead. It is never said in the movie, never really hinted at, but it would explain why they survive and why the portal is destroyed.
That definitely makes more sense.

This movie came out when I was a kid. A bunch of us went to see it shortly after it opened. It was an experience. The Ghostbusters theme and other songs topped the charts for a long time and for years you could see people wearimg Ghostbuster t-shirts, I even had one for a while.
What astounds me about this film, is that, Peter Venkman, is one of my favourite film character of all time, and the fact that the role was written with John Belushi in mind, but Bill Murray plays him so well, I now cannot imagine anyone else in the role.
Also, The actress playing Janine Is Annie Potts, who does the voice to Bo Peep in the Toy Story films
Dan Aykroyd's family has a history with ghosts and the occult. His father wrote a book called, "The History of Ghosts" and was a reviewer of psychic acts.
It's not just Dan Aykroyd's father or his family. Dan himself is a self-ascribed 'Spiritualist' and believer in various paranormal, psychic and extraterrestrial theories.
If you want more Akroyd you should do one of my favourite movies, “The Blues Brothers”. Probably the best Belushi as well.
One detail I just noticed. The news anchor mentions a "ghost locomotive" his grandmother used to talk about. In the sequel, that actually makes an appearance.

It was so nice seeing a modern audience actually appreciate Bill Murray's humor here. Every time I've seen people on youtube react to this movie, they all seem to get creeped out by Bill. So it was refreshing to see people actually understand that its just supposed to be harmless flirty humor.
Man that "I collect spores molds and fungus" line really hits different after the 2020 lockdowns.

The line that stuck with me the most was "Yes, it's true. This man has no dick." I've always loved that sort of bait-and-switch punchline that subverts the expectation.
This is still one of my all time favorite movies, and one of my earliest movie theater memories. Seeing that initial library ghost freaked out my 4-5 year old self, but I wound up loving the movie so much that I must have watched it a couple hundred times in the 80s-90s. So glad you guys got to watch it! I wish I could see it again for the first time.
You can tell this was an American movie made in the 1980s because the antagonist is a government agent concerned about the environment.

They used a real hotel ballroom (in LA) but covered the walls with duplicate panels to destroy. The Gozer building street front was also duplicated at the studio with fake erupting road sections.

One of those almost perfect comedies. A blue collar comedy about regular Joes doing an extraordinary job.

Your perception of this movie being efficient is quite correct. It's the genius of the writing behind it. What needed to be said was said, and when things didn't need to be said, actions were used to convey the message, and everything just flows without useless fluff. The 2016 reboot sucked, because it followed none of those things.
Back in 1984 when this movie first came out. The Halloween every kid dressed up as either a ghost or a ghostbuster. It was a big hit in my neighborhood. All the parents I think had more fun than us kids did lol. Thanks for the movie reaction
That is THREE mortgages at 19%, THREE. That is what makes Egon's line about the amount of the annual payments hammer home...he would have been better off selling the house. Also this movie has one of my favorite, most in character lines of dialogue of all the films I have seen. Dr. Egon Spengler 'Sorry, Venkman, I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought.' Reginald Van Johnson in addition to Family Matters was John McClaine's LA cop buddy in Die Hard 1 and 2. Ms Weaver's building does have an elevator...with the gate opening and all that jazz apparently the power cut out or the damage to the top of the building put them out of order. Thus the stair scene.

Back in 83, posters started to appear on hoardings everywhere, showing the 'No ghosts' logo (as used as the letter 'O' of 'Ghostbusters' in the poster). There was no other info, just the logo - and it went on for months. As there was no internet back then, in ye olden days, there was nowhere to find out any more info and so soon everyone was asking each other about it and making guesses as to what it might mean. A very clever advert campaign.
The green ghost that popped up a lot was called Slimer. The design was inspired by the look of a person who would have been a member of the cast. When Dan Ackroyd was writing the screenplay, he imagined the role of Peter Venkman not with Bill Murray, but with John Belushi. Ackroyd, Murray, and Belushi were all members of the original cast of 'Saturday Night Live', but most of Ackroyd's most famous and loved sketches were done with Belushi including Jake and Elwood Blues...The Blues Brothers (which they made a film of together). Unfortunately, as Ackroyd was working on the screenplay with Harold Ramis, Belushi died of a drug overdose. It was one of the big deaths in the comedy world that had serious ripples because of how many people loved John Belushi. They brought in Bill Murray, who had worked with Reitman and Ramis on ''Meatballs' (1979) and 'Stripes' (1981)...and with Ramis (as a director) on 'Caddyshack' (1980). The new people were everyone else. SIgourney Weaver wanted to try her hand with comedy. Ernie Hudson (Winston) was pretty new to the buisness. Rick Moranis (Lewis) was becoming more and more popular having done SCTV (Canadian!!!!)...by the beginning of the 1990s, Moranis was a huge star. This was the biggest movie the year it came out, and I went to see it in the theater probably six times...of course, I was 12 years old at the time! I didn't care for 'Ghostbusters II', the 'Ghostbusters' re-boot with Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones was vilified (although, I didn't hate it. It was actually fun). I have yet to see the new 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' with Paul Rudd, written and directed by Jason Reitman (Ivan's son)...but I really want to!!!
Hudson wasn't new to the biz. He worked on the blaxploitation films "The Human Tornado" and "Penitentiary 2" and did guest spots on TV shows like "The Incredible Hulk" and "The A-Team". He happened to be in an sci-fi film Ivan Reitman produced called "SpaceHunter", and that's how he replaced Eddie Murphy.

The Onionhead ghost also called Slimer was a nod to Jim Belushi. Dan wanted him in the movie but Belushi died before filming so they made the ghost.
