    Thank you for the feedback. The presentation was intended for year one nursing students so I tried to simplify things like the paradigms to match how they are tested. If I re-do it at any point I could frame it in terms of realism and relativism as that is what they look at in third year when they get into more depth. In terms of an introduction to research I find that too much terminology confuses people.

    Hi Killam,This video is very useful for the teacher who are teaching research metodology in different institutions and plz.expand the positivism and post positivism also realisitivism

    Definitely! It is nice to know that these videos help others. I am thinking about making more. If you visit my UA-cam page there are some videos about APA too. I am thinking about updating them as well to clarify a few things but am unsure when I will get to it. Any feedback on the videos is appreciated.

    It is a really good overview but I do have one issue: qualitative and quantitative are methodologies, not paradigms. The main paradigms in research are positivism, post-positivism, critical theory, contructivism, etc...(Guba and Lincoln, 1994).
    However, the overview of methods is excellent, thank you for publishing it.

    Thanks for the wonderful presentation. My question is what becomes my paradigm if my epistemology is interpretivist approach for a qualitative study?

    I do understand where you're coming from there! I teach post-registration students and they struggle with it! Thanks again though for a great resource, I will be running it in class if that's OK?

    You might just save me.... I miss classroom lectures-nowadays all the graduate programs are online. I feel very disconnected without a conventional lecture. Thank you for these videos.

    Yesterday I understood but I am now confused. So how does the theoretical frame and/or conceptual framework fit into the research onion or speak to the theory under the research paradigm? Say under interpretivism I choose grounded theory, do I still need another theory for the theoretical framework? I ask this because the term theory is being used interchangeably (at least from my understanding) 1. Theory to guide one's methodology i.e how the phenomenon will be studied. 2. Theory (in the theoretical framework) to explain how the phenomenon occurs. Please help

    Thanks nurse killam,i have better understanding of subject matter,can you recommend specific journals for literature review that is free for nureses

    • @NurseKillam
      @NurseKillam  9 років тому

      Many workplaces have access to journals - hospitals included. It is hard to find good scholarly literature review journals that are free. I know BMC nursing and some others are free but the best place to go for reviews is the Joanna Briggs institute or Cocharne database but they are not free. Sometimes you can find some good free stuff using Google Scholar.

    Would you please explain the distinct differences between narrative and phenomenology approaches please? They are similar that both are narrative and talk about lived experiences. Thank you so much NurseKillam

    • @NurseKillam
      @NurseKillam  7 років тому +1

      +Ann Ness great questions. Narrative research focuses on stories wheras phenomenology focuses on meaning. They are quite similar otherwise.

    • @annness522
      @annness522 7 років тому

      Omg I didnt see that! Hahaha Thank you so much NurseKillam. About the sample size for narrative approach, although Creswell says about 1 or 2, I also found elsewhere that it can be a group of people. Would you share about your thought please?

    • @NurseKillam
      @NurseKillam  7 років тому +1

      +Ann Ness qualitative research is pretty flexible and context bound so I'm guessing they could be right. It's probably best to talk to individuals though. There are issues in getting a depth of information in a group setting. I'd need to do some research to be sure.

    Hi Killam. I loved this video, it's really helpful! =) I just wanted to leave you with a question: I believe cohort studies compare equal groups of different ages (classes, generations, aprenticeship entry dates, etc.). Don't you mean longitudinal studies when you refer to cohort? I really loved the qualitative research part! =) Thank you!

    • @NurseKillam
      @NurseKillam  10 років тому +2

      Hello Pedro. You are right that cohort studies compare groups of people. The groups are, however, chosen from similar populations. Cohort studies are longitudinal in nature because they need to follow the groups of people over time to observe for any changes to the variables under study. While I wasn't explaining the difference between longitudinal and cross-sectional studies in this video (that is in another video), the discussion of cohort studies in this video does illustrate how a longitudinal study works. Thank you for the feedback.

    Pity that the current paradigm tends toward the political. Ontologicall speaking. Therein lies the relativism.

    It's confusing how different authors don't agree on terminology. I rather differentiate paradigm from approach. The first would refer to Positivist, Interpretative, and Socio-critical. The second would be Quantitative and Qualitative

      +Surya Prasad Bhusal axiology is in my book and maybe some videos. It's not a paradigm though. Axiology is about ethics and values. Like ontology it is addressed in all paradigms.
