Thank you so much for the video! Trying to read the text book, I was completely lost. Your beautiful presentation of the concepts made things much clearer. I keep thinking how wonderful of a social service UA-cam educators are doing for the world. Thank you! ❤
Thank you very much Dr.Hu for considering different style of learning and for patiently explaining the most complex theory. Your style of teaching using visuals are very helpful. The most effective style of teaching that makes me understand and remember for a very long time is through visuals. I REALLY ENJOY LEARNING THIS RESEARCH TERMINOLOGY. Thank you very much. keep doing what you do best.
i have been spent half a day watching videos' of ontology and epistemology and non- of them made sense, even went to the extent of asking chat gpt " explain epistemology like am 5" and in just a mater of 20 Min you just perfectly explained what took me a whole day to get.
Thanks for your appreciation. I guess I have the advantage of being a none English native speaker - I need to unfold abstract concepts till they make sense to a none native speaker.
Thank you so much Dr Hu for a very informative session/lesson on these terms. I'm a new researcher and having to write a Literature Review of 10,000 words but trying to get my head around the terminology and their meanings - Ontology, Epistemology, Methodology and Methods. I really appreciate your examples and the clarity of explaining the meanings of each word and its application. Blessings
Brilliant approach in explaining these concepts. I’ve grappled with them for the past weeks and I did not get anywhere. Thank you so much Dr Hu. It now makes sense 😅
Your instructional approach is very refreshing! You have a talent for presenting theoretical subjects in a personally relatable and easily understandable way.
thank you doctor. this really helped build my concepts. it was really hard to grasp the essence of it but your video has helped alot. what i learned, if im not wrong is that Ontology is what we take as reality so we took pyramid as the reality, the epistemology is how do we know that the pyramid is the reality and then comes the methods to know prove the pyramid as a reality in which the broader methods were quantitative and qualitative from methodology in which for the sake of the comment ill take qualitative and take surveys and ask people of what they think of it where surveys are a method. please correct me if im wrong or need some more guidance in the comments. btw thanks again doc.
Thanks for your comments and appreciation. I would advise you to be aware that survey can be conducted both qualitatively and quantitatively so it would be good if you could make it explicit on which type of survey you want to use.
I must say you are really good at explaining! The different use of teaching methods depending on the students' learning styles, the patience and the excellent use of terminology and the flow of information! i just love everything about what u did and if i ever were to teach i aspire to be like you! Thank you for your efforts
Very helpful lecture. It is exactly what the begginers really need to become effective researchers. You have put yourself in my shoes and tou understood the dark cloud i had. You are good infact excellent. Thank you
Thanks for the analysis! Just a quick off-topic question: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (air carpet target dish off jeans toilet sweet piano spoil fruit essay). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
Dr. Hu, I am a graduate student studying at Arizona State University in the field of curriculum and instruction. I came across your video as part of the course I am taking on research and evaluation in education. Your video has been very helpful to me as a supplementary source of information and explanation between the relationships and philosophy of research. I am interested to know if you have any insight as to the differences between research and evaluation, something that has come up as a topic of discussion in my course. I would love to hear from you as to your thoughts. Thank you! Cala Courtner
Hi Cala, thanks for your comments. In my understanding, research includes various types of purpose and evaluative is one of the purposes of research. According to Saunders et al.'s book, Research Methods for Business Students, evaluation refers to "the process of judging materails or methods in terms of internal accuracy and consistcy or by comparison with external criteria" and "the systematic collection and interpretation of information with a clear purpose, to find things out". I would say evaluation can go beyond research as we can evaluate other things such as process/decisions/curriculum etc. than just evaluating a piece of research. And when you evaluate, you do not have to collect data as empirical studies would do. On the other way round, I would also say research can go beyoud evaluative research as there are other purposes of research e.g. explorative, explanatory, descriptive and predictive research.
Good presentation Great I have question to as if possible How do you relate Case study in assumption of physiological paradigm. Does purposive sampling work in case study?
Hi Habtu. The first thing I want to clarify is that there’s no ‘universal’ equation between the terms in research methods - different books use different definitions. For example, case study has been interpreted as an approach, design, method, methodology, strategy or technique (Hartley 2004; Tight 2010, cited in May 2011). I prefer to regarding case study as a research strategy, which is based on Saunders et al.’s research onion model. You are encouraged to do the same - you can pick up a definition which you feel comfortable with and reference the source. Please also note that strategy ≠ method. When you refer case study as a research strategy, what you actually would do (e.g. to conduct a set of interviews etc.) is your research method. In this case, you could say that you would conduct a case based research, using interviews as the research method. And yes, you can use the purposive sampling strategy in case study.
Hi Abdou, a wide definition of post-positivism could include all the philosophies that reject positivism, and interpretivism is one of those philosophies. I hope this makes sense.
Hello- thanks a lot for this; very insightful. Just wondering where would the idea of "research design" be placed in that initial flow chat around 5:00? Thanks
Research design is mostly connected to 'method'. In research design, you could talk about the details of your 'method'. For example, if your method is interview, you could talk about what type of interview (unstructured, semi-structured or structured) you use, who you interview and your sample size, etc.
Ma'am I still didn't get how it's related to ontology and epistemology ? Actually my question is Explain the ontology and epistemology consideration with regard to quantitative and qualitative approach in social research . Please and me ma'am I HV only 2days left for my exam
philosophy Interpretivism Positivism Ontology subjectivism/relativism objectivism/realism Epistemology subjectivism objectivism Methodology qualitative quantitative Please do not use my graph in your essay/exam. You need to read research methods books, summarise the message by yourself and cite/reference the books.
Thank you so much for the video! Trying to read the text book, I was completely lost. Your beautiful presentation of the concepts made things much clearer. I keep thinking how wonderful of a social service UA-cam educators are doing for the world. Thank you! ❤
Though the path is ontology, however, some methods require and demands Epestimology first, then ontology.

Thank you so much! The best explanation...Keep it up!
Thanks. Glad that you enjoyed it.
Quite helpful. Thank you
You're welcome. I hope you enjoy the learning of research methods.
Is there a difference between post-positivism and interpretivism, or are they the same? because I see that both of them reject the positivism.
Hi Abdou, a wide definition of post-positivism could include all the philosophies that reject positivism, and interpretivism is one of those philosophies. I hope this makes sense.

It was very clear.Thank you!
I am glad that you find my way of explanation clear.

hello , I want to ask you which research assumption should you adopt.
Hi, can you explain your question?
Thankyou so much mdm
You're welcome. I hope you enjoy the learning of research methods.
Amazing dear.
I hope you enjoy the learning of research methods.
Ma'am I still didn't get how it's related to ontology and epistemology ?
Actually my question is Explain the ontology and epistemology consideration with regard to quantitative and qualitative approach in social research . Please and me ma'am I HV only 2days left for my exam

Epistemology subjectivism objectivism
Methodology qualitative quantitative
Please do not use my graph in your essay/exam. You need to read research methods books, summarise the message by yourself and cite/reference the books.
Can we classify the following as methods that fall under quantitative methodology; e.g survey, correlation studies, experimental designs
surveys are not restricted to quantitative methodology; they can be qualitative surveys and quantitative surveys.
Thank you
You're welcome. I hope you enjoy the learning of research methods.
Good
I hope you enjoy the learning of research methods.
Hi
Good examples and explanations. Her command of english does interrupt the flow of her presentation
Thank you so much Dr. Hu for this simplified high level tutorial that on research philosophy. much appreciated. Kindly share your email address.
