  • We've all seen influencers flex their designer game on social media but what is it about these brands that have people dropping so much cash? Jae and AleXa find out whether or not an extra $400 really makes a shirt any better than the one in your local thrift store. Spoiler Alert: probably not.

    I really admire the topic jae and alexa chose for this podcast! Fast fashion and luxury brands are not talked about enough!
    We have been taught that wearing new/trendy clothes and brandnames are related to our status. However, that shouldn't be a necessary factor for living our lives or our sense of worth. And it definitely isn't a sustainable way to live, considering the damaging environmental and socioeconomic impacts.

    It's also important to note that those clothes in the landfills can also end up being clothes people have donated. There is so much clothing donated in a year that if they don't get sold or collected in a certain time frame, the clothes end up being thrown away to make room for the new batch. So thrifting more can help reduce textile waste~

    Fast fashion can be really really low quality... especially for women's clothing. They stain and tear quickly and often don't wear well through the day. They tend to be more trendy items that go out of fashion quickly... if your wardrobe is more basics than trendy things then it might not be as noticeable~

End result by the time I get comfortable with using them they are out of date. Luxury brand items are only worth it if its sth classic that won't go out of style easily. But if you buy every new item they come up with and discard the older ones bc they're not trendy at the moment... it defeats the purpose. There are a lot of good quality brands that are not the typical ones they mentioned. And there are a lot of independent brands that make good quality, eco friendly, ethically produced things.

    I’m American. And here you can donate your prom/homecoming/bridesmaids dresses too. I gave some of mine to my college’s costume department for their theater program. And I gave the rest to my town’s Cinderella Day organization. A local church collects formal dresses, shoes, purses, jewelry for high school girls who want to go to prom but can’t afford it. It’s a really cool organization. Before I knew about this organization, in the past, I had trouble letting go of all those dresses (because I spent so much money on them). But knowing that someone else could use it, I felt joy paying it forward and letting the dresses go.

    Keep in mind that donating your clothes is no insurance that they will not eventually end up in landfills! While some companies sell a large part of the donated clothes to third parties (e.g. H&M) instead of recycling them, others may sell the clothes that they cannot sell (bc they're worn out, damaged, won't sell) to third parties as well or directly throw them away... Most of these third parties then sell these clothes in huge amounts to third world countries where they often still end up in landfills. Just think, people in third world countries also prefer for example a Nike shirt over your old H&M one... Just a reminder ;)

  • @CoreChick

    The most important thing to remember is that most clothes that end up in landfills aren't from consumers, they're from the companies. Especially in the countries where clothers are produced. If one shirt is made incorrectly, like one sleeve is longer/wider or things like that, it's cheaper (labor, time) to throw it out than to redo it. And then they sit in landfills instead of being recycled. It's also easier to blame the little people than get companies to take responsibility. They do that with plastic and other issues too.

  • @gandg.6830
    @gandg.6830 3 роки тому

    18:10 The 75 lbs of textile waste per person is because when companies make clothing, most throw away the cloth scraps. So even if you personally don't throw away any clothing or other textiles, if you wear new clothes, you are contributing to the waste. Most textile waste comes from the companies, they just distributed among the population to give you a better understanding of how much waste that is.

    Nowadays even luxury brands don't produce quality goods! in the past it used when they first started the brand (Chanel, Gucci etc) but these days even the replica items of the brands are equally or better. Most designer luxury brands are now made in china and other countries. There is a documentary on it on youtube. Here is link of the documentary ua-cam.com/video/n7hzomuDEIk/v-deo.html
    There are also better eco-friendly and less expensive brands of clothing these days. I personally feel people just buy luxury brands to impress people instead of appreciating the design and art behind the designer. I used to be that way before, but i didn't feel better wearing them either.It was just a a temporary feeling of superiority and satisfaction.

    I'm actually someone who's not into brands. Why to buy an expensive piece while you can buy it cheaper. Spending money on clothes, bags...etc isn't my thing. I'd love to be surrounded by pens, books, papers... Brands won't define you...

    I think there's definitely an argument to make about luxury brand goods lasting longer. I was an intern for Coach in 2013 and they gave me a sample wallet as a gift and I also bought a purse while I was an intern since I had an employee discount. 7 years later both items are in great condition and I use them daily. I haven't bought a new purse or wallet in 7 years.

    I have a louis Vuitton Bag from my cousin and it's the only designer bag I have and own so I have only brought it to school when I was a senior and to college I think then I decided to wear my backpack since I'll be carrying heavy books so . But I'd see other kids in high school with Gucci slides and mini bags and stuff and same with college too .

    I find it interesting how articles sat fast fashion doesn't last long but, I feel if you take care of an item it will last a long time. Although it's not ethical in terms of worker treatment for some, I find that fast fashion pieces have lasted me a long time
