I don't know Dianne (obviously) but everything I hear from her in these Dive Podcasts makes me aspire to be at her level. She is on the ball with intelligence, reason, humour etc (pretty much all the things).
Side note: She and Jae seem to get along like the best of mates. Great dynamic.

    Science teacher here!
Chi square analysis - pronounce "kai" square. It's just a way to analyze your data to help you understand what you are seeing.
P-values are used to see if things are interacting/relating to each other.
And.... Games are helpful! Especially if you start young, it: helps with the development of fine motor skills, increases critical thinking and quick problem solving, and strengthens creativity. I do see a difference between my gamer students and non-gamer students when I present situational problems to them.
Now, it does get negative if you game too much, though. If you play too much, then you spend less time on doing work, learning, and studying which, obviously, will really negatively affect your schooling.
Just be a light to moderate gamer and you're good to go! Shooter games may not help much, but things like open worlds, solving puzzles, etc are pretty good!

Nature is a highly respected, high impact science journal. It's really hard to get published there since the reviewers and editors have very high standards. It tends to have breakthrough studies that sometimes end up leading whole fields of science. In order to get in, the research topic usually needs to be sexy (and somewhat clickbait-y) and also have a lot of support for claims.
That said, it also tends to oversell stuff that doesn't work as well as claimed (hence clickbait) and the procedures are not always reproducible. It's kind of like sports cars. They look cool, they're hard to obtain, they inspire a lot of new car designs for regular cars, but if you compared mileage of a sports car like the Mustang to a regular sedan like the Camry, the normal car outperforms the sports car and is more useful to more people. Nature is a sports car type of journal.

Jae thank you for this episode. My son started young with games like Freddie Fish, Pajama Sam and Putt Putt which taught critical thinking and problem solving. I believe they contributed greatly to his intelligence! He grew up to play other games like on game boy or play station. He could often beat mom and dad even though we started out generally able to beat him. As he got older it amazed me the skill he needed to be successful and the amount of focus and concentration, planning, ability to adapt and make strategic decisions he needed and used which all carried over into real life as well as communication, self control and self discipline. Games were good for him and not just Reading Rabbit types!

Okay, neuroscience PhD student here, increasing the volume of grey matter in the brain where there are neurons isn't necessarily a good thing, neurons are very "expensive" for the body and we absolutely don't want more neurons than we need and can afford. So...we have to ask if increasing grey matter is a good thing and in what context, for people who suffer from diseases that cause grey matter atrophy? sure! A healthy person? we don't know... we have to take into account what happens when our nervous system perceives more sensory information than needed :) (and Nature is a scientific journal)
Anyway, stream packman and the rest of his and day6's songs.

I don’t think intelligence is solely measured by academics. I agree that games or video games can make you smarter in life skills and problem solving not so much in math, science, English, etc. Some games do incorporate economics, and strategic planning to win. Co-op games can help develop communication skills as well as working with others as a team. Both kills that are important to succeed in basically any job field.

My grandfather was a gamer in the sense that he was amazing at several strategy games like different boardgames and card games and even competed in tournaments so when gaming those games on computers at home became a thing he could practice without buddies so he played on the computer *a lot* and when I was maybe 3 he thought I was old enough to learn strategy. One of the best lessons of my life because I learned before teenage years to think before I act and reflect on the impact of my actions and be less impulsive so I never really had that young and stupid stage. Such a huge benefit to my life to start young. ^^

Just to clarify about the article about GPA/SAT Scores: Correlation does not mean causation. Even if two things have strong correlation, you cannot say gaming made their SAT/GPA scores lower. This is especially true since this is an observational study rather than an experimental one. There are multiple reasons that could result to lower SAT/GPA scores, family problems, test anxiety, unpreparedness for the exam, etcetera. So it does not debunk the hypothesis that games make people smarter.
Although, I have to agree that they do. Games actually improve hand and eye coordination, decision-making, and help build and strengthen neural connections. This is simply because games expose you to threatening and new events that you would otherwise not face in reality. Hence, majority of elderly people are being encouraged to play video games to keep up their cognitive health since much like any other organ, they atrophy/die out when not used or stimulated.
Jae we need to learn trigonometry because some of us go to the science field and become researchers HAHAHHAAH But I do agree, if somehow, people could find out earlier what they wanted to do in life they could skip all those courses they would not need. For me though, I need to those knowledge since I'm on the science field HAHA.
