    This is actually a biosafety cabinet, not a laminar flow hood. This is better than a laminar flow hood as it not only prevents contaminants from entering into the cabinet, but also prevents microbial hazards from inside the cabinet blowing out onto you. It will not protect you from chemical fumes as the air recirculates through a hepa filter into the room. This is what we use for human cell culture with risk of exposure to BSL2 pathogens. This BSC most likely failed to pass inspection and that is why is it being gotten rid of for so cheap. it can still be useful for minimizing contaminants to your cultures, although the filters should be changed and the flow rate needs to be assessed to make sure it is functioning properly. Obviously this is all less important with plant cell culture, but just remember to carefully decontaminate the cabinet before exposing yourself to it as these are often used for tissue culture samples containing bloodborne pathogens.
