i think the key to movement in vr is a rubber band like movement means if u walk towars somthing while holding a button ur character walks faster could work whit big steps or foot tracking even better and i cant wait to see what others figure out in terms of movement
Another way to deal with hand - world collisions would be to just always destroy the world. Would probably feel awesome to just be able to smash anything lol. Very cool video, thanks!
this video has really made me think about Vive vs Rift.. it may have swayed me to the Vive. There were some really good points on tracking and the trust issues. From having a dk2 and scrapping my hands on my desk, it is really true. I can't see my desk in VR but i constantly have to know where it is...
+Calibury I am also starting to lean more towards the Vive now. My only main concern is the content. Will i be able to play Oculus store games on the Vive? So hard to choose.. T-T
To deal with the a player's height, what if you designed a game element to raise/lower the floor to act as a giant step stool? Example: robot assistant notices that you can't reach anything and he says "let me help you with that" and the floor slowly rises.
42.58 I don't get why they can not make it possible to chop things with the knife into thin or thick pieces like you would expect to be able to do, and its a cop out them coming up with the sill story about how its more funny with the knife breaking..that for me would put a downer on the game tbh
+marklola12 Because, as they explained, for each new piece of carrot that you cut off, the game engine has to handle yet another physics rigidbody. Game physics engines are not designed to handle that many tiny objects near each other, so they spaz out and start bouncing around randomly. He did literally say all this in the video...
well ive decided to not bother with the first round of vr headsets ill wait till it takes off and the 2nd gen comes out, ive checked and there are no BIG devs making proper games for these, it seems its mainly small studios and indie's which some are ok but I'm not paying £700 to play just indie games, seems a lot off devs are waiting for the headsets to sell in big numbers before paying a lot of money to make a VR gam, but it may not work because most people wont buy these till there are a lot of big games
+marklola12 the first phase is definitely going to be experimental. this is a whole new medium! for me, that is what is so exciting! we are at the dawn of a new era in gaming, and a lot of new ground will need to be explored. if you're not an explorer, then definitely wait.
+marklola12 Everyone has been experimenting with making vr games for a few years now and there are now bigger studios working on quality titles that aren't just indie shovelware. Take a look at what titles are scheduled for PlayStation VR, Oculus, and Vive and there are some very impressive big-budget games that are going to launch with each headset.
also games that have the more REAL look do have highlights, assassins creed does and the witcher 3. I very much doubt VR games that look more real than this cartoon looking game would be ruined by things being highlighted
+marklola12 Have you ever played a game in VR? You can't make any comparisons to non-VR games. In a VR game, any object that is visually very realistic will _feel_ very realistic, like it's a real object sitting in front of you, right up until it starts glowing of its own volition. It'll totally break the immersion.
Most non-vr games that have interactables though have highlights. Having the highlights in a VR game is really a way of restricting the affordances it offers. Without highlights, you feel like you can interact with EVERYTHING, and it breaks immersion when something is not interactable. With highlights, if something does not offer that hint, it doesn't break immersion to not be interactable because you do not expect it to be.
+Ninami No. Unless it was a room-shakingly loud fart, the microphone would not have heard it. Aside from that it's quite clear he was just saying "erm".
On better physics i recommend Newton Dynamics, physics engine used by Frictional Games on all their games, is a little slower than PhysX, bullet and Havok but imo is more accurate (i think that is the reason is slower) its hinges (and others) physics are second to none.

Great talk! Thank you for this.
What a great talk. Can't wait for the Vive and touch, this stuff is going to be a blast to develop for.

+Calibury plus: probably oculus + touch will cost 750/800, so the vive is not THAT expensive.
+FerN Yurec it less about money and more about how to make my money work for me and what I want out of VR

***** No, but Valve'll support Vive, don't be afraid of that.
Half Life 3 VR I WANT TO BELIEVE
:-P
Can't wait to play the game! Awesome talk!
(You should let us chop at least 10 times before the knife shatters :D)
+SJVFX +1, don't shatter on the first chop!

don't worry i laughed with your coffee table joke !

+marklola12 It could be a limitation of the engine in combination with the physics engine they're using.

@36.20I don't see what they mean, I got to try the heist and opening draws did not make the VR immersion odd or disassociate your hand at all

Did he fart @ 20:40?
+Ninami good work

I dunno man, that sounded very fartlike. I think we need to take this investigation one step further.
definitely a fart.
He even lifted a leg. Nerd fart, no shame. I bet this two got a nice cheque and I appreciate the effort. Full disclosure is so refreshing.
They removed the knife and chopping

It IS a religious experience!
The more time goes, the less I'm convinced at VR gaming: it's obnoxious to put into place, it's too expensive and it's too niche.
MEH! :/
