    who's here "solving" the potential locomotion problem in Half Life: Alyx and Valve's next games?

      I wonder if we get to see their method at the Game Awards. On the website it only saves normal movement, teleport and a zoom function of movement.

      Likewise. Smooth locomotion is the only option that feels as real as it could get without a infinadeck.

      lolol me. I'm not being paid by valve nor do I have the technical know how to actually solve this and yet here I am lol. But with that being said the "armswinger" method in H3VR looks pretty promising. Definitely not perfect, but could be a step in the right direction. You can see someone who seems to be pretty good at it in this video(ignore the index review and watch the gameplay): ua-cam.com/video/pSZzk2dLXgg/v-deo.html
      The speed of arm swinging controlling the speed of the player seems to be like a good solution that is also immersive(the linear movement of only using the analog stick makes you feel like a camera just zooming around, whereas the arm swinging introduces a real headbob which makes the movement feel more realistic). I think a traditional button click to switch from a binary walk/run definitely would not work well in VR and would feel too unnatural. The speed control has to be a smooth controllable curve. Maybe the analog stick to control direction plus arm swinging to control speed could work. dunno, I really should be spending my time doing something productive that I actually have agency over...

    Teleportation isn't the "gold" standard. It's the standard holding back VR. Every game should have multiple options based on what the user is comfortable with.
    Teleportation is lazy and is killing VR. My friends who have played my VR setup have asked why every game is a "magic float" game or a standing tower defense.
    People want to traverse open worlds smoothly, not teleport. Teleportation is holding back VR and hurting it's image much more so than people who get motion sickness. It practically nulls the entire point of VR.
    Walking and running in place pretty much nullifies motion sickness. There are several ways to build a tiny VR treadmill that would help you walk in place. Ideally, a couple of sensors attached to your shoes would be all you need. it would sense walking, and running.

      You make many good points.
      I cannot help but wonder if we tried to apply teleportation instead of Locomotion into Doom, Quake, Unreal, World of Warcraft, Star Trek Online, etc... If it would kill those games. I imagine it would. (or for the older ones, would have)

      You really should make adjustable speed so people can walk faster if they dont really experience nausea. right now it looks painfully slow. so slow I wouldnt even want to try playing it. If you release the game and this is going to be how players walk, it is going to be a failure. I really want you to succeed since the game idea itself is pretty rad, really looking forward to it

    • @sleeves2604
      @sleeves2604 6 років тому

      People hated it not because teleportation is awful, but because they wanted options. The reason for teleportation is motion sickness. It's like being allergic to a food, you simply can't pick that food because it's better-tasting, or you might throw up or worse. I think every game where it's able to have more than one option should have more than one option. Most VR games are singleplayer, and thus having teleportation as an option does not ruin the game for you.

    • @NebRetalsJr
      @NebRetalsJr 6 років тому

      THERES A LOCOMOTION PATCH????!!!???!!!??? SHIT........ I never got it just because I wasn’t going to support a teleport only game. Fuck that. They need to learn right now to develop for the people who actually are using this shit every other day. Not could be maybe sometime in the future hopefully “customers”. They need to keep the base hyped up enough to keep the casuls/non early adopters interested. They got it backwards.
      Though this rant aside most games do seem to do both now. So yay...... It was just very frustrating in the early days.

  • @zarlorz
    @zarlorz 8 років тому +1

    I would probably add what I kind of think of as step teleportation. Essentially pressing on the pad to move forward instead of smoothly moving forward will just teleport the world the distance of a step or two. As someone who does get VR sickness (it's not actually motion sickness since motion sickness is the opposite cause, the inner ear says you are moving bur your eyes say you are not, commonly something you might get while reading a book in a car, for example) I found it interesting in Technolust early on when he played with that where I would use a smooth artificial locomotion until I would begin to feel that slight twinge of queasiness and then I'd switch to the step teleportation mechanic, even pressing the trigger to "run" making it a very fast stutter step, like watching an old movie, would instantly make the queasiness go away. I would do that for a while and could go back to smooth motion for a while until the feeling came back then I'd just switch back again.
    Admittedly that method does break immersion somewhat but it worked really well for me. You may have also seen on reddit some mention of a recent study showing that s subtle reduction of FOV wile using artificial locomotion apparently seemed to reduce VR sickness as well. That's not necessarily a locomotion method, of course, so not necessarily relevant to your video.
    I would also add that, while not are really commercially available just yet, that omni-directional treadmills will be another locomotion method that may prove useful for reducing or eliminating VR sickess as well. That's not necessarily a software locomotion method, mind you, but is an overall locomotion solution for VR that may prove of some use, although it remains to be seen how common any of those may become considering the price point.

    Once I can afford my vive (hopefully in a few weeks or so), I'd love trying to implement some horse-riding for moving around. You'd use your arms to hold the bridle of your horse and you could control the movement you your horse by moving your arms. I think that'd be a really good method for moving around longer distances. If you'd combine this with the RIPmotion-method from 5:33 or the VR zGame-method from 13:31 for close-distance movement, I think that you could easily traverse large open-world areas without ever having motionsickness or being thrown out of the illusion. Thanks for the great video!

      @Bumble49  8 років тому

    I don't believe any locomotion for vr are a be all end al solution to the problem. If BCIs ever become a thing, they would eliminate all issues with locomotion but they are far from reality currently. For now, the only way we can make locomotion less awkward is to fundamentally change the way we think about bipedal motion. A good example of this can be seen in Eric Tereshinski's Jet Island Dev Logs (the first one : ua-cam.com/video/wEaQ3DN_inI/v-deo.html). This method apparently reduces motion sickness but also allows you to get to different parts of the map with relative ease and actually looks kind of fun.

    Basically there is no good solution for locomotion. Short of having a clunky omni-directional treadmill installed at your home (which will only ever be viable to niche users), HMD-style VR will always have this problem. BCI-style VR would fix this problem in theory, but it's questionable if it's even possible to do.

    Awesome, I'm pleased they are looking for solutions to this, it's one of the reasons I haven't got VR yet (other than gearvr) having to teleport to move was a no go for me. Someday when portable VR is feasible we will be able to just go out to an open field or something and play any game we want and run practically forever, that would be a blast. It would be even cooler if they had big sensors on towers at the corners of the field to locate you, then you could put props in the field that fit the map, fake buildings, etc and have other players join you, kinda like that indoor VR thing but huge scale. VR is going to be nuts in a few years from now I think.

    I don't like any of these help "weak stomach people" movement alternatives (not counting windlands). Omni-directional and button movement are still the best options right now in my opinion.

    • @galvanizeddreamer2051
      @galvanizeddreamer2051 8 років тому

      Albeit, "weak stomach people" do exist, I have to agree. Some of these movement alternatives are like moving with the mouse, It works for some things, and not for others.

    • @abrampainter3764
      @abrampainter3764 7 років тому

      I don't experience motion sickness but even without considering motion sickness the fact remains that button movement is not very immersive. My take is always that if something would be awkward in real life it probably won't work in VR. It would be really weird in real life if you pressed some button and suddenly you were being thrust forward but then continue at a constant speed without any visible physical mechanism causing such a change. It's the same reason that when people try to turn lights on in dreams it commonly doesn't work - and consequently why it's a reality check - which is the case because when we flick a switch we don't really think about how doing so turns the light on subconsciously.

    • @mudai_
      @mudai_ 7 років тому +3

      Abram Painter yeah but the alternative is teleporting around like a point and click game, which is like 10x less immersive.
      I am but a measly console player. I use a stick on my controller to move, and another to look around. My point of view is seen from like 2-3 feet away, on a monitor that isn't on my face, yet I do not suffer lack of immersion.
      Games that are good enough in realism and/or story can still be very immersive, making you forget for a moment that you aren't in the game.
      In VR, even with moving around a virtual environment without moving around physically is a much *MUCH* better option when the only other is clicking on the floor and appearing there.

    • @digitalmagick
      @digitalmagick 7 років тому +2

      I have to agree, while button or stick based Locomotion can be mildly immersion breaking, it is far less so than teleportation.

      Nails s: I’m one of those "weak stomach" people. While I’m happy you don’t get the motion sickness some of us do. Good for you that you don’t have the problem. But it does no good to denigrate people who do. There are enough people who get motion sickness that it needs to be addressed. If the developers have made you happier with what you think is a better mode of movement, that’s great, but your happiness should not be contingent on excluding others simply due to *your* preference.
      Game development is a business and being in business means you try to reach a wider market. There is a large enough population that is turned off not because of a game type preference, but because it actually makes them sick. I understand not all game genres can accommodate two kinds of movement; car racing, flying and a number of others, but there should be two options when possible.

    Seems really odd to me, all these methods and variations trying to solve a problem that people can acclimate to. Did it ever occur to just find away to teach people how to get used to the motion sickness?

    • @AzaIndustries
      @AzaIndustries 6 років тому +2

      It's pretty much a matter of "suck it up" and eventually you'll get use to it.
      Teleportation defeats the entire point of VR IMO.

    • @sleeves2604
      @sleeves2604 6 років тому

      I wouldn't say teleportation defeats the entire purpose of VR. Would teleporting outside of VR defeat the purpose of real life? VR is good because it looks like you're there, teleportation or not. While yes, it does improve the immersion in some games to move smoothly instead of suddenly, it doesn't ruin the experience.

    • @AzaIndustries
      @AzaIndustries 6 років тому

      But you should return to VR with direct movement without giving up so easily. So your body can adapt to it.

    • @AzaIndustries
      @AzaIndustries 6 років тому

      I have vertigo, I love rock climbing.
      I kept rock climbing because I love it and my vertigo slowly went away.
      Or anxiety and panic attacks on a rollercoaster, I knew there was nothing to worry about but I had no control over it.
      I persisted with it and it eventually went away.
      The human body can get use to pretty much any condition if you keep exposing yourself to it.
      It's all just chemicals and reactions.

    • @misterawsomeman
      @misterawsomeman 6 років тому

      Vertigo is not in the same vein as motion sickness. Vertigo is a fear, motion sickness is a physical feeling coming from sensory inputs that your brain normally doesn't compute well with. Its the same as using a phone or reading a book for long periods of time while in a moving vehicle. Some people get motion sickness because you are viewing a stationary image while your inner-ear is sensing movement. It doesn't just stop if you keep doing it.

  • @thesauc33

    In order for the "hallway" mechanic to be effective, you need a 40'x40' area I believe. At that scale, the turning is imperceptible as far as I know. Ideally you could walk, or even run around. Maybe one day homes will dedicate a whole floor as a holodeck.

  • @MrSquishedsquashed

    Quick question (don't have access to a HMD as of yet so can't answer for myself). With the first method of locomotion you demoed, have you tried blurring the image at the edges of the player's vision and/or adding an increasing vignette based on movement duration.
    If you've tried either, have they helped at all?

  • @jzonkel
    @jzonkel 8 років тому

    The first method is genius. Really takes advantage of room scale. Only disadvantage is if you have a small play space.
