Interesting little vid. Both great bikes. Also demonstrates how important acoustics are to the experience & both sound amazing. That MT-10 engine is an all time classic. I think you're slowly falling in love with it Chops. Womble's RSV is a beautiful bike too but I wonder if he possibly hasn't quite got his suspension & electronics settings dialed in if it's pitching him out of the seat etc? Point being there's possibly scope for it to ride even more nicely than it already does.
It is most likely set for track rather than road riding, my bike kicks me out of my seat on occasion and mine is just set for my weight compared to stock settings, which are set for a small 65kg Japanese bloke from factory, could just be a nasty bump in our shite roads.
Cross plane crank motors have been around for a while but Yamaha and Rossi made them famous in 2004 winning the MotoGP championship on a manufacturers bike that only had one 3rd place podium the previous year. Yamaha made three motors for Rossi to test after January 1st as Honda would not let him ride the Yamaha until his contract fully expired. Vale picked the cross plan motor for the power delivery and won the championship and the first race on the M1. I loaded his M1 onto a trailer when I worked for Yamaha and it was like a feather it was so light!
After watching a ton of reviews including yours (several times, I might add), I picked up a 2023 Ducati Streetfighter V4 SP2 and I absolutly love it, this thing slays!
I think the pretender aka MT-10/R1 sounds just as good as a V4 and sounds like a little V8 with a decat exhaust. From experience the cross plane engine is a bit smoother. Having said all that, both bikes are superb!
I own a 2003 Tuono and almost everything changed in the current model except ergos as well as sound quality. Both are top notch for sporty riding. Great video John. I had my 2019 Tuono at brands with you couple years back. I can see the electronics were set way too high when you tested in this video. They shouldn't be flashing like that.
Guys the lights flashing on the top of the Aprilia dash are the rev limiter lights. from OE it is set low (circa 8,000). Set it to nearer the redline (where it should be), and all that goes away. Believe me when invasive electronics really kicks in you will know it. Ah, I see you and Womble had a flinglish at the Beachside Cafe at Bowleaze Cove. Looks like you stopped short of the Belly Buster though 😂. Noice. That Tuono sounds glorious btw 👍
So, my mate has the new MT10 SP with the akra pipe and you can still barely hear it. When we go out my 2010 speed triple is way louder even when the arrow pipes still have their baffles in. All that rubbish in the dustbin under the bike has killed the sound on new machines. The MT has a lovely intake howl, but the exhaust note is about a loud as a butterfly farting 🥲
You don't even need to decat the MT10 it has a very high flow cat on it. I put a Pro Race end can on mine and it sounds amazing. When you decat them they can be way too loud depending on the end can. I took mine to Andy at junction 33 development to get it ECU flashed and asked him about it and he told me about the high flow cat I them.
I bought a MT 10 in Juli and put 7400km on it in three month, I love it. I chose it over the Aprilia, because of Japanese reliability, the seating position, the better handling in town and twisty roads and lower service costs (valve check on a v4 at 24Tkm vs. inline 4 at 40Tkm). But my MT 10 will not start anymore, I have to bring it to the dealer. I had Triumph, Ducati, KTM and Husqvarna, no issues whatsoever. I did not expect this form a Yamaha.
The Tuono is standing up very well for it's (relative) age - maybe in need of a bit of fettling. It's definitely got a stronger pull on the old heart strings though....
The MT10 SP any day! To further enhance the bike, I would upgrade to the Akra exhaust pipe (or to a full system, if possible, add SBS track / road performance brake pads, a DNA air filter and go for an professional ECU reprogramming to see 160 - 170 whp with optimised fuelling / driveability (in-gear acceleration) 😎🏁
@@RichardASK Wheel hp are measured on the rollers. If the tuning effort should read 160 whp - depending quite a bit on the exhaust system chosen (stock is way below due to Euro5 emission regulations, the throttle does not fully open at every rpm-level) - then this translates to about +10% hp at the crank. You would notice a considerable increase of mid- and high rpm punch.
I will say Exotic bikes have a feel and a character that is hard to duplicate but after a couple trips to the exotic bike dealership fixing electric Nagles the MT 10 with its Japanese reliability starts looking pretty goddamn good
I much more prefer the quiet exhaust with good intake noise. My street triple had a very nice intake sound. The sound should be for the rider to enjoy not to annoy most of rest of the people. I am warming up to this sp01. Still I’d probably chuck a lower handle bars just for the looks and a bit more sporty position. Ps. This English breakfast during British summer brought some nostalgia and a good chuckle. I kind of miss it.
7 :00 am here. You've done made me want breakfast now. I love that Mt 10. I'm hoping to get a 2024 model. Not sure if I will get the sp or the standard model yet
I was wondering what you’ve done with Womble, glad to see him back. I hope Gregorio doesn’t get jealous though 😂 Tough choice between those two bikes, can I just choose both of them?
Great video mate! Just out of curiosity do you know what many kilometres you travelled for the 8.1 litres of fuel? I would like to know what the mpg you got on it.
Regarding the electronics of the Tuono keep calibrating these on a regular basis. Let's say every 1000 Miles or so to compensate for tire wear. By doing that you can ensure they stay consistant. The noticeable intrusive wheelie control will behave waaay better on level 1 after doing that I suppose. At least I experienced this issue and solved it that way. Level 3 is completly useless in my opinion :)
I agree with you on the Tuono electronics I have the 21 they are so much better imo with the factory Akra ect they just make me smile on startup yet alone when giving it the beans great video as always Chops 🏍️🎉
Aprilia superior. Yes the real V4. Looks, finish. Italian design and the entire package. I love 2016 1100 Factory, 2017 Factory, 2020 Factory and this years 2023 in MotoGP livery matte 1100 Factory. That V4 engine is legendary. Especially with SC-PROJECT Crt.
Like riding the v4 but that motor is wound up pretty tight, 16k miles on a tuono you should be replacing some pricey bits, they were not meant to last very long.
Sounds a bit tinny.. 😂 get an Akro on that bad boy and it’s different story. I absolutely love the Tuono but both of those bike sound utterly amazing with a decat and a decent system/end pipe. I found the Yamaha generally a bit more comfy and more relaxed that the Tuono being a bigger/taller guy. The Tuono is no doubt the prettier machine but I’d still take the Yamaha which is easy to live with.
We've ridden both exact bikes recently, both are good buys, both are value for money. However, I'm not sure despite being in the same category that they're direct competitors, I think you either want a V4 or an Inline? Might be interesting to compare the new CF Moto V4's to the Aprilia when it comes!
I’ve owned both gens of the 10, (very biased), but I’ll admit the Tuono is just a unique animal. Not sure anything really compares to it, but I wouldn’t trade it for my Yamaha. It’s more comfortable, easier to ride, cheaper to maintain, etc. Aprilia needs its own category for the T. 👍🤪🏳️🌈
Brakes are still 💩 on the mt compared to much of the Brembo stuff that many competitors are now using, even on some of the Japanese brands. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge yamaha fan, I have an '18 mt10. Just using a good quality sintered pad makes by far the biggest improvement, EBC DOUBLE-H sintered is what I use. The biggest and best improvement on the mt10 is competently tuning or "flashing" the ecu. I literally thought I was riding a different bike after the flash. The only downfall is that fuel mileage goes from bad to terrible! I get about 25mpg the way I ride and I'm 63...lol. Just the price of admission on the Yamaha if you want it to actually run healthy. These bikes are absolutely strangled to meet euro5. They run SO lean, especially down low to mid rpm from the factory. Yes, the new gen are absolutely the same! My tuner proved it as he owns a new gen. When you remove the exhaust system on the new gen, you're looking at exactly the same engine. I bought mine with 1k miles on it for $9600, practically new. Another $300 for the ecu tune and I found a bargain on a Yoshimura 3/4 decat system for $600. 95% of the power gain came from the ecu flash, NOT the exhaust system. Exhaust adds a few hp but mostly just accentuates that beautiful music produced by the brilliant yamaha cp4! One hell of a bargain for one shit-eatin grin inducing machine! 150whp of pure jailbait!
as an owner of older version of mt 10sp( now sold) i really cant see why yamaha decided the remove the body panels from the new mt10sp the bike look so unfinished. It could be the best bike to ride, still my ocd wouldnt allow me to ride one. :D lol if one wants a V4 i think Aprilla is the way to go. Plus pricing is very similar now.
That Yamaha seems like a great bike,, and nowadays you have such a good choice,, engine configurations ,, brilliant stuff ☘️👍👍👍☘️,, can you turn it all off ,,😮
Great vid Chops. I've got a 2017 Tuono Factory, and every now and then I flirt with the idea of getting something else. But electronics aside, it's still one hell of a package, esp for my jockey-like physique. Noise, poise and theatre. Though like a few of the other comments point out, you've got to set up particularly the rear shock to exploit the bike properly on the road. The later bikes with the semi-active Ohlins make it easy. Top stuff as always chaps 👍🏻
I've had an MT10(160PS) for 5 1/2 years and I've also had an extended go on the new MT10 (166PS) and I didn't like the new model. In my opinion, they have spoilt the sound(not a noise) by giving it too much induction noise. Clearly the new model still has a horrible seat (which is why so many of us buy the comfort seat, which is lovely). I was ready to buy the new model, but I didn't like it and will wait for the next version.
Womble has the nicest looking year of the Tuono. And that green wheel is the icing. While I’m sure the SP is a great bike, it has one of the ugliest front ends out there. Actually the ass end isn’t much better. Nice paint though.
Would the MT10SP be your next bike if it had a full Vandemon exhaust a dyno tune and a padded seat? but that starts another question why do we have to spend £2500 just to get a bike the way we want it. Is the BMW S1000R the perfect bike that you spend the least on?
Did you mention Wombles.. on a test ride of a pretender 🤧 .. "think" back .. at Yamaha's cross plane crank concept .. big bang they call it .. then direct your attention to Ducati's V twin V4 go engine .. a bit above your head maybe .. Aprilia as good as it is came waaaay later with their 60deg v4 .. Yamaha's stuck with the cost of moving from straight 4 to V
I guess when you say the MT rides like a V4, you mean it's got a ton of low end/midrange grunt! Older sport bikes are more like that with warp speed kicking in as 6-7k rpms are reached. Manufacturers need to do that more as they used to, but people want slower accelerating bikes as they don't see that as they see they can do 200+mph that they will never see 🤣🤣 Kawasaki should bring out a ZX9r anniversary edition ZX10r next year in the old liveries and tuned and geared for acceleration and a max speed of 170-180mph (like my E1 ZX9r 😁), the B1 9r released 1994.
Cannot recall a summer as garbage as 2023's. Nonetheless it came good in September and I piled the miles on my Gen 3 Hayabusa. One of my favourite rides is from my home in Warwickshire to Swanage, Dorset. Been known to do it for 3 days on the bounce.....anyone else out there as stupid?
What you forgot to say is that the tuono is 11000cc, and Yamaha MT-10 is a 1000cc. Yamaha is a far more all round usable bike in all conditions, City riding, commuting and of course going fast. Tuono is just going fast and come home. With the MT-10 you can tour the Alps for 20 days, no problem at all.. that is not possible with the tuono, without pushing yourself to the limit every day. Then is reliability! Arguably Yamaha is a far superior machinery with excellent price through out its life. Italians are far from delivering a reliable allrounder. Yes i know there are a lot of b..ters pretending they go fast on the Aprilia..you hear from them everywhere.
Ive test rode the new MT10-SP. loved it. But still need to test the Tuono. 😢.. If you buy a Tuono there the colours you want. beautiful 😍🤩.. Love this review🎉

I would like the V4 but it’s too small for me at 6ft. Considering the MT SP to replace my Superduke.
Put some petrol in the tank.
What was wrong with it?
@@King_Harrold They replaced the spark plugs and it starts now. I hope this is fixed now, but I have to wait until spring to test the bike...
@@bryansuperduke1290rtry the new tuono factory, im 6'5 and found it quite comfy
The Tuono is standing up very well for it's (relative) age - maybe in need of a bit of fettling. It's definitely got a stronger pull on the old heart strings though....
The MT10 SP any day!
To further enhance the bike, I would upgrade to the Akra exhaust pipe (or to a full system, if possible, add SBS track / road performance brake pads, a DNA air filter and go for an professional ECU reprogramming to see 160 - 170 whp with optimised fuelling / driveability (in-gear acceleration) 😎🏁
The new MT10 already has 166 brake at the crank.
@@RichardASK
Wheel hp are measured on the rollers.
I will say Exotic bikes have a feel and a character that is hard to duplicate but after a couple trips to the exotic bike dealership fixing electric Nagles the MT 10 with its Japanese reliability starts looking pretty goddamn good
Everythine I turn the throttle well on my Tuono I feel like driving a Motogp machine, love it 😬👌
Nice to see they gave you an LC plate on the MT10 👍🏼
Haha did it? I missed that 😀👍
I much more prefer the quiet exhaust with good intake noise.
Sorry 😆👍
Tuono V4, mapped with carbon Akra (baffle OUT) is the sweetest thing🫡
That Aprilia sounds amazing
I was wondering what you’ve done with Womble, glad to see him back. I hope Gregorio doesn’t get jealous though 😂
Tough choice between those two bikes, can I just choose both of them?
Great video mate! Just out of curiosity do you know what many kilometres you travelled for the 8.1 litres of fuel? I would like to know what the mpg you got on it.
I dunno man. Everyone loves the sound of em but I always prefer an in-line setup just screaming it’s nuts off
We’ve just brimmed the bikes, so that should get us to the shops and back 😂
Regarding the electronics of the Tuono keep calibrating these on a regular basis.
I'm probably a biased owner but the 1290 super duke quality is next level
The M10 is a fantastic big brute of a bike and if you have three cheeks its much easier to enjoy - But the Tuono is a proper thoroughbred!!
Great sound of both bikes
I agree with you on the Tuono electronics I have the 21 they are so much better imo with the factory Akra ect they just make me smile on startup yet alone when giving it the beans great video as always Chops 🏍️🎉
Yes the new ones electronics are right up there with the best of the best 👍
That's why you turn them off unless it's wet or you can't ride for shtt
As MT10 owner, i find this title offensive. We no pretender we inline 4 crossplane engine not v4.
I love the Aprilia but for me, I'd ride away on the MT10-SP, much more of an every day bike.
Yeah very keen to try that new CF Moto.. might be a cracker! 👍
Both bikes look superb.
The Tuono or the Speed RR are likely the only bikes I'd trade my Street RS for but don't quite trust myself enough!
My Yamaha Diversion with dani moto pipe sounds good but the ducatik tuno sounds fantastic
I just can’t get past the looks of the MT10. I loved the old shape one. New one just looks like it is missing something
It is so you order the fill panels for the sides from Pyramid plastics. Im likely getting one again next summer. Miss my Gen 1I sold.
Tuono everyday of the week, owned an Mt 10sp from new and got a lemon traded for Gsxr1000r .Mt 10 held its s/hand price though.
Two great bikes, the Tuono looks better and sounds better though. Trying to decide on a hyper naked right now, I think Tuono is going to be it.
Not sure if I'm doing something wrong but the helmet city code isn't working for me?
Is it upper case Terry? Also it's only for items not already on offer sorry
@@LambChopRides cheers, will try again 👍
Hi Chops, your discount code for helmet city doesn't work. But great vid, I'd personally be picking the v4 over the mt10
Did you use upper case for the LCR bit? Also only works on items not already on offer 👍
Which slip on can you recommend?
as an owner of older version of mt 10sp( now sold) i really cant see why yamaha decided the remove the body panels from the new mt10sp the bike look so unfinished.
Also any chance on doing a review on the CFmoto 800mt?
Yes will be able to try one next year, currently the press bikes are now sold
One thing I hate about the MT-10 is how budget it looks. The Tuono is muscular and more interesting looking. Really the only downside of the MT-10
Would the MT10SP be your next bike if it had a full Vandemon exhaust a dyno tune and a padded seat? but that starts another question why do we have to spend £2500 just to get a bike the way we want it. Is the BMW S1000R the perfect bike that you spend the least on?
That's exactly what I'm thinking! Your right just crap that you have to spend money getting a bike to what it should be standard.. bloody Euro fools
One of those tests that has to be performed by seat of your pants to really appreciate the difference between the two.
I guess when you say the MT rides like a V4, you mean it's got a ton of low end/midrange grunt! Older sport bikes are more like that with warp speed kicking in as 6-7k rpms are reached. Manufacturers need to do that more as they used to, but people want slower accelerating bikes as they don't see that as they see they can do 200+mph that they will never see 🤣🤣
Kawasaki should bring out a ZX9r anniversary edition ZX10r next year in the old liveries and tuned and geared for acceleration and a max speed of 170-180mph (like my E1 ZX9r 😁), the B1 9r released 1994.
Yeah I agree! 👍
great point my friends 2000 R1 was warp speed at 6-7k rps while my 2004 was only top end power 13k rpm
great point !my friends 2000 R1 was warp speed at 6-7k rps while my 2004 was only top end power 13k rpm
I'd rather the lower maintenance cost of the yam. The cp4 comes very close to the v4 in character. Both are way faster than I will ever be.
Aprilia needs to make a fucking v4 touring bike like a multistrada
Ive test rode the new MT10-SP. loved it. But still need to test the Tuono. 😢.. If you buy a Tuono there the colours you want. beautiful 😍🤩.. Love this review🎉
Thanks buddy 👍
The tuono, has it on sound.👍🏻
Chops I just want to tell you that youtube is using your video to promote the kardasians on Disney+
The fecken Kardasians chop, that is outrages
Also love the video buddy.
What bike would you buy?
Haha thanks for the heads up! I will get the Lawers primed! 😆👍
MT10 is still insane value for money let’s be real here
Well actually you can buy a Tuono Factory at the end of the season new for around 15k. The MT-10 SP is 16k, yes probably deals to be had too but won't be much in it
How can you own a Tuono and not ride it for weeks. I'm 65 have Honda v-4 and ride almost everyday. Nice though.
