I love that this channel has grown from simple gear sales overviews to actual practical information from a knowledgeable resource. Love you guys at Venture, keep it up
I just moved to Alaska from Texas so I’m learning to deal with the cold. Your opening line took the words out of my mouth. I hate having to put on or strip off layers while managing my sweat and then having to pack and unpack layers. On top of that it pisses me off how much room it all takes up. In Texas I could be out for days with just a small day pack. In Alaska I have to have a 60L pack just to be able to carry clothing. Great video. Keep this sort of content coming!
Thank you for this long, detailed and very information-packed video. You really spared no effort to explain everything about the topic well. Greetings Torsten
We just purchased 2 LiteFighter 1- man tents. Excellent price! This is the only product that is a 3 season tent that can transition into a 4 season tent. Other products do not come close to the quality of this tent. We're looking for the LiteFighter I- cold weather kit FS1116-Tan. I wasn't able to get the NSN #. Sry, Jefry. Merry Christmas & God Bless to all of you at VS! 🇺🇸
Underrated tip, want some heat relief? If you unzip your coat while it's underneath your plate carrier or chest rig etc, then spread the chest cavity of the coat to the sides, it won't be exposed as the gear is still covers it and even creates a huge vaccum of cool air to relieve you and circulate while still maintaining heat retention as possible with minimal heat loss, like self regulation. Combine this with coats that have ventilated mesh armpits and stuff like that; perfect. Your coat doesn't move that much or at all, your still concealed and cooler unlike having it under your gear zipped up. Spoken from experience it does work well having it unzipped under your gear while moving and shooting, crawling, running etc. Gloves; I love my outdoor research winter gloves with the Gor-Tex Infinium, low profile like the ones you have but a different even slimmer design with no Velcro. Their grey and black and even attach to each other for carrying. It is surprising how low profile they are for how warm they keep my hands and can use a trigger with them on a AR or even a pistol just fine, slightly chubby but it's serviceable! Has a leather finger touch phone compatible finger. I love their gloves now after these, even with a hole in the one finger it keeps my hands warm... my hands and overall temperature is sensitive to the cold so that speaks to it's effectiveness and I think the Gore-Tex Infinium in it puts in work for warmth and water proofing in the snow. I will say boots are better then altma maritime assault boots despite being basically upgraded low-mid cut (I got the mid) converse tactical shoes that ventilate and drain themselves. If you wear the proper thermal socks, and proper winter combat pants etc over your shoes rather then in them (I prefer my combat uniform tucked over not in my shoes for a variety of reasons). You will be warm enough too so Altma's mid converse style tactical shoes actually do work in the winter surprisingly. However if it's super super super cold, then definitely go for like insulated heavy duty water proof boots instead otherwise speaking from a owner of these shoes your feet will be a bit chilly to cold.
I have an idea for winter.. create a package that is a bundle of basic layers for example LVL 1-5 to cover you in 50 or below.. might be harder to do matching up surplus but maybe if you get some new stuff!
Will you review the polarted level three fleece in another video? Could you also do a review on the Gen 1 ECWCS Parka? I think it's very nice in terms of the features. It has big pockets a nice hood and a lining that is comfy and is overall warm and blocks wind and water well. The new hardshell has no pockets.
Great info Lucas! I was in the service, USMC in the 1980's. Basically still Vietnam issued BDU's and gear so I was wondering what all those new 'levels' were about! I suppose body armor has required the thin layering system they use now. I use a variety of camo patterned BDUs for hunting in different environments. I've found most BDU/ACU material doesn't snag or make much noise in the sticky/bushy country I find myself in a lot. Basically it's long johns if cold enough but usually just a long sleeve t-shirt and boxer briefs as base layer. Again if cold enough I've started wearing a standard fleece hoodie as a level 2 layer (must have a zipper - pullovers too warm) but usually just the BDU top. I like the old M-65 style field jackets (I likes me some pockets) and usually wear that as an outer layer or even instead of the BDU top if needed but it's rare. A poncho and rope belt takes care of my wind/rain/snow resistance. A boonie hat most of the time but always carry a wool beanie. Thinking about trying one of those 'neck gaters' - more for camouflage (hiding skin) than cold weather. Yeah - I'm old school. Never could see spending the outrageous money commercial civilian outfits charge for their 'pretty' clothing and jackets. The surplus multicam/OCP pattern uniforms are expensive enough!
Always figure most companies hire smart ppl with experience but soon as you said Korea i listened harder. Thats my coldest experience and i dont want anything else
Do y'all make custom tops and pants using a submitted camo pattern? I bought some Tigerstripes but had found a pattern without black in it and instead has brown. Thanks.
The army never issued 100% wool service wide. They had also already dropped it when merino became popular. Synthetic has superior moisture wicking. Wool doesn’t agree with a lot of people’s physiology. Synthetic is cheaper, more efficient, and more universal. All that said, I like wool.
The truth is too many people in the service were feeling sorry for the sheep so wool was 'cancelled'. Now the sheep are just slaughtered for the meat they use in the MREs. 😂😋

Thanks for that support! A lot of that content had to be done, but glad to be moving beyond it to more practical content.
This is quality video. Deserves more views!
Layering is the best thing since coffee instant type 2
Level 5 bottoms are underrated IMO. They're like beefier versions of hiking pants you'd find at REI.
Give this man a raise
Thx for nice content 🔥
Appreciate the support!

Bought some Belgium jigsaw pattern pants at your store front today! Y’all are awesome!
Loove Belgian jigsaw, good choice. Thanks for your support :)

We'd really like to! It is definitely hard to do though. We have recently had a basic Base Layer and Mid Layer Bundle, but they have sold out.
Good stuff definitely saving this video for when it gets colder
Great channel and prices!
Everyone around me thinks I'm crazy because i wear the waffle and my uniform top, but rarely break out my fleece. Layers are great.

Could you do another layering video on layering with other items such as the Gen 3 fleece?
Sure can
Always figure most companies hire smart ppl with experience but soon as you said Korea i listened harder. Thats my coldest experience and i dont want anything else
It was my first time experiencing actual snow, and was quite the learning curve.
@@VentureSurplus same! IPE gear doesnt cut it on the flightline at 4am in Feb 😂
When you gonna get them level 4 wind shirts in?
one of these days. always looking but USGI ECWCS level 4-7 aren't as common as level 1-3.
Arctis has a decent one on Amazon.
@@armadilloeggs231 link?
Wait...is that a roughly 6" sticker of a Grey Knight on the tote?!
Yessir

We don't do any custom work like that.
I spy a Ravenguard Astartes sticker!
💪🏼🇺🇸💪🏼
I’ve got most of the ecwcs I’d like to have a level 6 set in multi cam size large regular how much would these cost?
Those are sometimes hard to find. When we have them they range from $80-150 depending on the condition.
What field top are you wearing? Or I'd that just a custom top?
It's a G2 Crye Field Top
Why did the military drop wool? I thought it performs much better than synthetic, especially with sweat. Was it just cost?
My best guess is cost. Wool is more expensive than synthetic. Synthetic has its place but wool is tried and true.
The army never issued 100% wool service wide. They had also already dropped it when merino became popular. Synthetic has superior moisture wicking. Wool doesn’t agree with a lot of people’s physiology. Synthetic is cheaper, more efficient, and more universal.
