You've had nothing but positive interactions lately and things seem to be going so well. But all of a sudden it seems like your ex is testing you, randomly questioning your motives and intentions and maybe putting you in impossible situations and you're wondering is your ex testing you? If my ex is testing me, what should I do?
Like you, your ex got hurt in the breakup too. These signs that they are testing you may also be unconscious signs your ex wants you back! It's best to be patient about this and grow the emotional connection and positive interaction between the two of you.
Remember that you can't attract your ex back if they feel like they are walking back in the same relationship that they have left in the first place!

Hi Clay! Been learning so much from you that has been extremely helpful! So Thank You! As far as my ex testing me…. Our situation is unique in the fact that we’re “broken up” but still living together & sharing the same bed (long story for another time). BUT things have been improving quite a bit. Went through damage control. Have been working on emotional connections etc. She’s always loved my massages, which in the past were usually a prelude to more intimate activities. The other day she was complaining of her feet hurting after work. I offered her a foot massage, but did 2 things: 1. Set boundaries, limiting it to 5 min per foot. & 2. Assured her it was a foot rub and nothing else. She accepted and went as described (though she asked for a little more time). Last night, she asked for a neck and shoulder massage. Again, set boundaries + gave her a tank top to wear, as opposed to being topless under the blanket (as I used to always do it). She enjoyed it & kept it as planned. This morning, woke to find her feet crossed over on me, started giving her a foot massage under the covers. Eventually, her foot ended up rubbing ummm things, got me a lil “happy”, so I politely excused myself, got out of bed and started my day. Before we both left for work, I talked to her about it and explained why I stopped and got out of bed. I don’t know if she was testing me (that I’d keep it non-sexual) but I managed to stick to my guns and resisted the urge to push the envelope (and hopefully leave her wanting more). What do you think?

I have an example of a common ex behavior that I think falls under an "impossible choice" that you mention and could use your insight. This is an ex that has re-entered the picture gradually over 6 months, but within the last several weeks there is genuine connection and fairly regular contact, from sometimes meaningless (sending memes etc), to facetime calls and online gaming together. Occasionally, he throws in a text that could be construed as flirtatious, or even a meme that has romantic undertones. The "impossible choice" here is that flirting back seems to be dangerous and risking sending him into a "reactance" mode, not 100% sure if flirtation is what he wanted. But not flirting back could be interpreted as rejection or making him think it caused discomfort. I know there is no "one size fits all" formula for this, but a general guide to how to make this call, would be so helpful. Thanks Clay!!
You are a breath of fresh air, I was listening to all these other videos and “experts” and I just hated the idea of playing games. Playing games just increases anxiety especially when they don’t work out. Like you said, once you start a game it can turn in so many different ways a d then you are basically on your own to figure things out. I like your approach, it’s honest, it’s being who you are and really if you can’t be yourself then it will never work out with your ex.

My ex and I were getting very close to Crisis Point. We were communicating pretty well, hung out a few times, and she's trusted me enough to tell me some personal information and her inner most feelings (about anyone but me, of course).
But then her rebound told her to stop talking to me. She agreed and told me she would start distancing herself from me, that we wouldn't talk or hang out right now but that eventually (by the time my bday comes up) we would be back to normal so she could get me a present.
I obliged and started giving her some space but then she claims that talking to me is putting heavy stress on their relationship when, as I'd learned from her, they'd already been having problems BEFORE he gave her an ultimatum... I was just the straw that broke the camel's back. The problem is if they break up she's going to blame it all on me....
I've been a great friend and have avoided conflict with her at all times. I'd bought her some Christmas presents that she really enjoyed and a couple different things to brighten her day like lunch at work because her rebound has been taking her for granted HARD. She's told me that no one else does those things for her or goes out of their way to do things "just because".
Well, last night she talked crap about me to someone else... saying that I'm nothing but drama and a liar when I've never lied and have never intentionally started any drama with her. She even told the person that I liked this girl when I specifically told her I DIDN'T like this girl and now the person is harassing me and the girl.
It seems to me like she knows I haven't done anything wrong, that it's her bf's fault for having trust issues, but that she is trying anything and everything to get me to slip up so she has a reason for cutting me off other than the fact her rebound told her to. We have made tremendous progress in two months... I went from a full 3 month block to us hanging out a couple of times and talking about our inner most feelings... I don't know what to do.
If they are or have been reaching out to me, even though they are vehemently adhering to being in a "rebound" relationship that escalated quickly? She has questioned why I hadn't expressed my own feelings earlier, until things were in her mind "done" but I know that I was terrible at expressing myself. I even admit to it.
My ex and I have been in connect for 7 months ( a few months of him having a crush on a girl-and I was just trying to build our connection) right now, things are pretty slow but a few months ago we stopped talking on the phone, never facetimed, and hung out once ( so I’m unsure what to do now)

The way i think my ex is testing me is by having me communicate.
She left me for lack of communication, she wanted to have deep conversations about topics like ... let's say what's happening at Twitter with Elon Musk. (2022) and other subjects.
she reached out, we had a regular conversation (catch up type) that started to go platonic so i stopped it.
Next day i asked her about what she thought about that new article about twitter and she seems to like it.
Last time we met face to face she said she was looking for a partner that communicates more and see their own perspective on things. i have read book on communication since the day she told me, motivated to improve myself overall.
She may be testing me to see if i actually can have a conversation other than to catch up and that way, by having conversations and giving my own perspective is going to help rebuild her interest in me.
Although, if she is not testing me and just using me to waste time texting then i'd be surpised as she is this independant women that knows what she wants and is not leading people on and focuses on that one person she has interest (as to what she told me on our 2nd date back then)
I’ve been implementing no contact for a week or now but before I did I had a phone call with my ex we seemed to be getting well together unlike other times where she said she didn’t see a chance of us getting back together she didn’t say anything about it she seemed kinda confused should I stop no contact or just give her space?

Hi coach , ya I think my ex testing me, we had a breakup cuz I was needy and insecure when he doesn't reply my text, we r in ldr.
So I did the no contact, and few days ago we started talking again, everything went well, then suddenly he went missing again yesterday and not online until today, but been watching UA-cam to what to do, so I'm not panic and so I dt do any mistakes, make my self busy by painting. Hopefully is just a test, and is not him busy with other women. I hope not

Me and my ex keep bickering to the point we jokingly threatened to block each other and keeps saying "I don't care" whenever I say something but she keeps engaging and I just feel annoying her (add that she flirts to someone whenever I do the same) 😂

I feel like she is giving me the impossible choice test. She and I have different narratives about our friendship that crossed into more than friendship. She pursued me first, kissed me first, led me to her bed first. Then (my fault - she never said it clearly but I suspect because I had withheld my debt problem and she did not like my drinking habits) she pulled away back to strict friendship (barely agreeing to meet in person; no intimacy/gf stuff, dry or dead fish texts, etc.) I freaked out and blocked her because I couldn't take the pain - my immature tantrum I know. She blocked me back for a month or so.
But now that we have reconnected, a few times she has gotten physically close, tight hug said I smelled good, let me kiss her on the cheek. Followed a week later by saying not to touch her and that we agreed just friends and that she is exploring other options. Then she will resume that thing where she will reply to my texts but won't initiate them. It is maddening.
Part of me is so demoralized I want to give up; the other part feels like she is still attracted to me and just doesn't trust that I have changed (I have improved a lot in the 6 weeks since the breakup but some of this takes time). I don't know what to do. It's like some days I have hope; other days I feel like I am deluding myself.

Well a big problem that we had in our relationship was me always wanting time with him and he would play his video games and he would be on there for a long time sometimes plans would be canceled I would get mad because he would be the one I have a car so if he didn’t want to go anywhere I had to go by myself and I didn’t like that so I always argue with him when he would go on his PS4 and we’ve been broken up for about three months and we’ve been hanging out on like the second month and he still does that and I’m not too sure why I haven’t said anything negative about it he mentions like sometimes negative things about our relationship and I tell him to just drop it I don’t wanna talk about it he is basically telling me stories of what he wants to do in his life how much money he sees himself getting just so much success in his life and I’m being there to support him we have a kid together and I’m also pregnant right now I just recently found out I was pregnant probably 2, 3 weeks after we broke up

One of my ex's biggest issues was that he didn't feel I was listening to him. He has been resisting my attempts to see him and tells me he would like it if I could stop asking and let him come to me. Whether intentional or not, I believe my ex is trying to determine whether I can really hear him and respect his boundaries.
I would just listen and do what he ask. The worst has already happened you’re not together so what do you have to lose by giving him space and give yourself some space too

And I just began to focus on me. While watching these videos I got a txt from him, I didn’t txt back but just start to focus on you and soon you won’t even feel you need them. Of course you want them but you won’t need them.
Relationship or a person should never be tested. Anyone who does so has trauma or manipulative. If anyone who tests you it’s best to just leave. After all, relationships should be without mind games right? 😏👌

I wouldn't say that it is a test, but it is more of keeping your emotions in check after the given space between the two of you after the breakup.
She said we are done! Over my disapproval for her wanting to do work trips often and my issue with her male friends. But since then we tried no contact and she contacted me. She asked for space, I gave it, but she contacts me to hang out when she's on a day off. She seems to want my attention when she's got nothing to do but when she is busy she wants space. She is acting like a single person and not as a couple trying to work things out. But she tells me she is confused if she still wants to get back together. She is stringing me along.

I dont know for sure but I think my ex tested my character when she said to one of my texts “Why are you texting me, we arent friends” i replied under composure no reaction and then she said “I dont want to fix anything please dont text me again” ended that convo with “ ok let me know if you want ur hoodie back. wish you the best” i think that was a test because now she has responded back with “give it to one of my other friends ill get it from him”. im not going to respond right now but later i will tell her that she will have to get it from me amd then go into another period of no contact.

Hi Harry, if the intervention order has been issued, we have to respect the law inorder for us to stay away from legal troubles. We may not be sure what the core reason why the order has been issued given that we know the full story between the two of you.

So my ex broke up with me about a 2 months ago. Has recently said he wants to be friends, he texts most days just to see what's happening. He's thrown a curve ball saying he wants to be friends with benefits.. I know its not the right thing as he will most likely just be using me. What do I do?
Hi Carys, There is nothing wrong with being friends with your ex as long as you have healed and is ready to start friendship with the person. When it comes to being 'friends with benefits", you have to check with your personal values. Is it something that is aligned on your personal values? Are you comfortable with the said set up? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages? You have to listen to your inner voice as well.
@@ClayAndrews well I'm not gonna do the friends with benefits as it's not something I would do. It's not something he would do so it's confusing as to why he would want that.

I think she is testing me, and I will like it if you can let me know if that is true, we were texting back and forth, and she was liking how I was complimenting her, and one day she texted me "Good morning with an angel emoji" she since the breakup have never initiated the text so I responded to that text and since then she just ghosted me, no response at all, the breakup was because I was needy so I gave her space, now after I noticed she ghosted me the only 2 texted I sent were one if she needs someone to talk I am here, and 2 it has been a while and when she has a chance she can texts me to catch up any thoughts?

@darkmagician2723 , I am so sorry to hear that your girlfriend is going back and forth between wanting to move on and being in love with you.
It sounds like she's having a tough time processing what she wants, and it's not easy to stay grounded in that kind of situation. When dealing with a lot of uncertainty, it's easy to get caught up in the moment and react without considering how things will affect you in the long term.

@@ClayAndrews I can never be over her we have children together she slept with her emotional affair partner after we broke up but all I can do is hold on the the promises she gave me even after we broke up she told me I will always have her heart and she can't wait to meet the amazing future we will have together that she is mine till death and she wants a coffee date after death like right after she slept with him she ran home telling me lets do therapy she will cut him off and burn bridges with her family that she misses her husband and wants to come home that she is so happy I didn't move on then 24 hours later she takes it all back saying she doesn't wanna be with me she is not in love with me and I need to move on she even admitted that she was the happiest she has been since the break up cause that night we laid in bed together and fell asleep holding eachother crying no sex just being close because I couldn't make love to her after finding out who it was she slept with she said she felt like she cheated on her husband but then says she doesn't feel that way anymore like im so confused on what to do cause she is still talking to other men but im sleeping in our old home on the couch hanging out with her while she sleeps alone in our bed she has kissed me 3 times since the break up and the last time said the kiss doesn't mean anything its just a kiss for her please help me I miss my family she is my home she always says she hopes we can be together in the future but she refuses to work towards us having a future im going crazy and my heart can't take much more I lost my mother in February then I lost my home my job my wife I lost everything and I can't cope I can't lay with another woman I've tried but I can't because im fully committed to her you know she is the very best part of me and tbh I will always be hers even if she isn't mine we have been thru everything together addiction getting sober all the hospital stays and all night me caring for her she has a weird sickness and used to spend literally hours in the bath I would sit with her and rub her back and take care of her her family never took care of her I did I drove 2 hours at 2 am to be with her cause she had a nightmare about her ex abusing her no matter what she needed I always made sure I got it no matter if I went without or not because she is my wife and I will die before not putting her first she told me she will choose me for the rest of her life but now she refuses to choose me and im just so hollowed out inside like im not even me without my best friend without my wife and kids and im so lonely I have no family left my mother was it I have no friends I have not one person I can talk to about this I just want her to choose me like she promised she would always do I don't understand how she can be like this

So.. We met up and kissed a few times.. Then she when cold. A week after she told me it was a mistake and she was testing if something was there but she wasnt attracted the same way anymore.. I pulled away and she didnt seem happy about it. When I saw her a week later she went crazy and accused me of lying in the relatioship because of something she heard from friends. I made a promise to not smoke weed and she heard that I did it anyway when we were together. She blocked me and told me not to speak to her anymore. I assume that the accusation was a test and I didnt pass? :-D
There could be several reasons why she made that decision in the end. Maybe the circumstances just fit the puzzle but may or may not be her personal truth. In the end, it's only our ex who can tell the truth behind what they think and feel.
@@ClayAndrews Well.. Yeah.. She eventually established contact after I tried to move on and now we had a date. Kissed, she stayed the night and went coldish again.. I am not panicking and giving her the space now to initiate contact again.

my ex fiance broke no contact after a week saying she needed to drop some things back she accidentally took when she moved out. She turned up, i acted cool and she brought back a 5 buck washing basket...that was it.
