So true I actually heard this song for the first time this week and i can’t get enough of that ending. It’s so emotional and sad but beautiful at the same time. I don’t know it makes me emotional I love it. He also plays the sax with so much passion

They pretty much started off the Americana genre of music in the sixties while rock and roll was going psychedelic. Before they went off on their own, they backed Dylan on that famous tour when he first went electric. The Band had three lead singers, all excellent.
This was their farewell show after touring together as “The Band” for 16 years. This footage is from Martin Scorsese’s film, The Last Waltz. They had guest musicians, friends perform with them at this concert, the likes of which include Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil diamond, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison, too many to list here from memory. But it pretty much was the Who’s Who of the rock music scene of the seventies. Also includes a lot of interview footage that really shed light on who these guys were. Sadly only Robbie Robertson, who wrote most of the songs and Garth Hudson who you just saw on the saxophone are still living. They were also the people Bob Dylan chose to take his music from acoustic folk music to electric rock as his band, that’s where the name of their band evolved from. Would love to hear you look at Muddy Waters performing Manish Boy from this concert, it’s powerful.
I remember being at Winterland one night and they announced The Last Waltz concert date coming up, and when they said the ticket price was $25 I said NO WAY, cuz that was just too expensive haha. Though they did tell us it included a huge buffet Thanksgiving dinner

Danko’s voice was sublime and It Makes No Difference is one of the greatest torch songs ever, thanks to Rick. His vocals reach right into the sinews of your heart and tears them apart.
The sax player is Garth Hudson, who mainly played organ in the band. Absolutely brilliant musician from London, Ontario. He was initially hired to be the group's "music teacher", partly to appease his parents who otherwise would have looked down on him joining a rock & roll band, but also to bring the playing skills of the band up to another level. His tour de force in The Band was the song Chest Fever, plus he brought all sorts of interesting sounds to The Band's songs, like the wah-wah clavinet (not clarinet - a clavinet is a keyboard instrument) on Up On Cripple Creek.
Rick Danko was singing lead on this song. But all the members were lead quality singers. On songs like "The Weight" they each took a verse. The other guitarist Robby Robertson wrote this song.
Garth didn't sing, and Robbie didn't sing much. Garth was a genius on several music instruments, Robbie wrote the songs and played lead guitar, however the other 3 members, Levon, Richard and Rick, all had great voices, although Rick is my favorite. Robbie would often write songs with one or 2 of the 3 singers in mind. He definitely had Rick in mind when he wrote this song, and Levon for Up on Cripple Creek and The Night the Drove old Dixie down" Richard "The shape I'm in", and on The Weight Levon and Rick.

They are NOT underrated, as they are considered one of the greatest groups from the 70s. Bob Dylan gave them the name "The Band". Their song The Weight is one of my favorites of all time. Other great ones are Up On Cripple Creek and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. G.I. Bro well here in the UK, for a kid aged 10-20 during the 70s, the only song by the Band I EVER heard was Rag Mama Rag, which was a minor hit at the start of the decade. We knew all about prog rock, glam rock, Bowie, soul, disco, punk, new wave, two tone, ...... but The Band? Never heard of them until I was much older. Love them now.

All three are among the best vocalists in rock and roll.Also everyone of them is an unbelievable musician, Check out The Weight or Stage Fright or Endless Highway. I saw this film with my big brother when it first came out in Australia 1979 (?) and I’ve been in love with The Band ever since. I still play them at least once a week to this day. The best in the biz. 💖💖🥰🌸

From the world's perspective, the Beatles came first, paving the way, breaking & making their own rules, with songwriting and recording inovations. The Band arrived, more mature in their access to other styles and influences, fusing them into an intoxicating moonshine never heard before. They flew in face trendy, hippie-pyschedelia and extended guitar solos, putting the emphasis on the song itself, stripping it back to core, roots goodness! Especially their early album covers, generic/ironic name and initial image. 4 Canucks & a good ol' boy, changed the soundscape of popular music for the best!!!!!

My favorite song by The Band. Having said that, there are many others just as good in their catalog. The lead guitar player (Robbie Robertson) wrote all of the group's songs and they actually had three lead singers. By no stretch are they underrated though as they made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame upon their first year of eligibility, and, unlike many of the acts enshrined there, they actually deserved it.
The song of their time: THE WEIGHT!! A must watch. It's from this same live concert called "The Last Waltz". The whole concert was filmed and released as both an album and a movie.

You need to watch the Band’s last show, “The Last Waltz” = you’ll love it! Everyone’s in it! Everyone in The Band can sing, play multiple instruments, they were the first Electric band Bob Dylan had. Rick Denko, singing here, does another song at the concert, call “Stagefright” which is one of my all-time favourite songs. Robbie Robertson, lead guitar is one of the best ever. The 'brown album' is now Bob Dylan's bootleg vol 11 (earlier the basement tapes) Greil Markus wrote a whole book on that album. One great Americana masterpiece.

"The Weight" is the best song they ever did in my opinion. Robbie Robertson (Lead guitar) played in the movie "Carny" that came out in 1980 with Jodie Foster.
Robertson who plays Patch, worked summer jobs in the traveling carny circuit when he was fourteen and fifteen, respectively. Besides providing inspiration for this film, Robertson's experiences working in the carny circuit as a teenager also inspired the song "Life is a Carnival" by The Band..........Plus he was a producer on the film.

I NEVER watch these kinds of videos, but I love this song - this performance - so much I had to witness someone hearing it for the first time. You didn’t disappoint. Different songs make me want to play different instruments, this one makes me want to play everything. Robbie’s guitar playing on this is liquid fire. Levon joining on backing vocals gives me chills. Rick’s vocal is so charged and emotional. And Garth’s sax solo is next level, perfect contrast to Robbie’s leads. Can’t leave out Richard, he always added something special to the mix. Seeing you take it in was really rewarding.
Whoa! Underrated? The group was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2004 Rolling Stone ranked them No. 50 on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time, and in 2008 they received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2004, "The Weight" was ranked 41st on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
Their farewell concert tour was in 1978. Rick Danko died from a drug overdose and Richard Manuel shot himself to death. Check out Chest Fever, I Shall Be Released, Stage Fright, Time To Kill and Whispering Pines.
Such a talented group. Rick Danko sang lead on this tune with his inimitable voice. Yet they had 3 lead singers all 3 of whom are worshipped by many including myself. I can't pick a favorite though if pushed I would likely default to Levon Helm. But then I would hear Richard Manuel and think once again of Ray Charles. While Danko's leads cannot be duplicated by anyone for my money. Together, they are melding harmonies from the highest balcony in Heaven, I'm sure. Yet, most if not all of their songbook, incredibly, was written by Robbie Robertson, the lead guitarist who in my memory sang backup when he at all making him, quite possibly, the biggest musical impact talent of them all.
Sadly, three of the members of The Band have passed on, including Rick Danko who is singling lead on this song. They all took turns singing and playing different instruments. They were truly talented in so many ways. You've GOTTA watch the entire film "The Last Waltz". It's a must see for every dedicated music connoisseur.

Then during the mid 60s they backed Bob Dylan at his controversial but groundbreaking electric gigs. In 1968 they made their first album, Music From Big Pink, as The Band. The clip here is from their last concert, The Last Waltz, filmed by Martin Scorsese in 1976. Robbie Robertson, the lead guitarist wrote their classic songs and he had three superb singers to do them justice. Here it is Rick Danko on bass. Equally soulful are the voices of Levon Helm on drums and Richard Manuel on piano (the very hairy one in the opening conversation!). Playing sax here is Garth Hudson who also played keyboards and was a genius musician. Sadly the only members left alive are Robbie and Garth. Check out other clips from The Last Waltz. I got to meet Rick Danko and Levon Helm in 1994. What a surreal experience that was! I’ve had a beautiful framed poster of The Band on my wall for the last 30 years. Bob Dylan's back up band when he went on tour in 66 and went electric. Hence the name, The Band. This performance was from the last wlatz, the greatest rock n roll doc IMAO. I would recommend watching any performances from this move. I believe you already reacted to The Weight with the Staples Singers.
The clip you showed was from Martin Scorcese's The Last Waltz, which was the last night that The Band played in that configuration. It was billed as there last gig and they invited many of the people that they had played with over the years to join them on stage: Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton to name some of them. The show was in 1977 and the movie was released in 1978 (It is worth watching the whole movie). The band re-formed in 1993 without the guitar player, Robbie Robertson. Since that time the piano player, Richard Manuel, the bass player, Rick Danko, and the drummer, Levon Helm, have passed away. They were an amazing band that could sing and play anything.
They already are and have been a legendary and critically acclaimed band, right up there amongst the many top artist they've colaborated with. The Band!!! Absolutely essential to any understanding of popular music. Arguably one of the most influential groups ever. Dylan going electric, Clapton quitting Cream to reassess what he was doing, “The Last Waltz”, all because of The Band and all watersheds in music history. They showed another way forward that wasn’t commercial pop, or bombastic arena rock, or gentle folkie singer-songwriter stuff. And they can PLAY!
Ive been a fan of The Band for some 50 years. The name "The Band" came about after several failed namings and finally settled for "The Band" because a No of artists just referred to them as The Band. They supported on tours and studio work for a No of worldwide main acts during the 1960s and 1970s including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton etc etc etc as well as being a super talented group in their own right. SUCH A TALENT.
Ive listened to this song a hundred odd times but every time Garth Hudson plays that sax i get goosebumps and Rick Dankos heartbreaking vocals makes me want to cry. Such a special group of musicians, so sad it's only Garth left. Rip Richard, Rick, Levon and Robbie 😢
The performance you saw here was from The Last Waltz; their farewell concert in 1976. They go back to the early 60's. They were the group backing up Dylan when he converted from acoustic to electric in the late 60's, which is sorta where they got their name 'The Band'. The 'guy with the sax' is their keyboard player. He's a musical genius; he can play anything. All of these guys play multiple instruments. Most of the music was written by Robbie Robertson, the lead guitarist, but 3 of them rotate singing. This was Rick Danko, the bass player singing. Levon Helm, the drummer, sang many of their songs, and the piano player, Richard Manuel, was considered the lead singer. Sadly, Levon, Richard, and Rick have passed on.

One of the best. I saw them live in Boston, and it truly was the best show I've ever seen. Their second album, just called "The Band" is a total classic; probably their masterpiece. They were special.

"The Band" is my all-time favorite. I am 75. I sure hope you listened to more. The live performance is their last concert. After this the original broke up, some members carried on. This whole concert is on YT You will hear other greats from my generation..
The Band was on their own a great band but they were the backing band for Bob Dylan but they were a mixture of rock, Southern rock, folk rock and country and a whole lot more of different types of music but they were one of the best bands around and still hold a special place in my heart
Rick Danko wasn’t even their primary lead singer though his voice was perfect for this song. Arguably the most talented Band ever. They were highly respected by the top performers of their era.

Levon Helm, drummer/vocals, was one of the greatest talents of all time. Sadly, we lost him on April 12, 2012. Such a beautiful, kind soul. He did a little acting too. He played Loretta Lynn's daddy in The Coal Miners Daughter. He was also in The Right Stuff. The Band recorded some great music. Rick Danko died in December 1999.
I love watching these reaction video's on The Band. This rendition of "It Makes No Difference" gives me goosebumps every time I watch it and it might be their finest recorded live song. When they were living with Dylan and he wanted to work, he'd say "where's the band?".
They are NOT underrated, as they are considered one of the greatest groups from the 70s. Bob Dylan gave them the name "The Band". They were working as his backup band and as session players for others, so Dylan started introducing them as The Band onstage. They went onto a Rock Hall of Fame career on their own. Their song The Weight is one of my favorites of all time. Other great ones are Up On Cripple Creek and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Drummer Levon Helm also had a really solid acting career, appearing in films like Coal Miner's Daughter and The Right Stuff. RIP Levon, Rick and Richard.

G.I. Bro well here in the UK, for a kid aged 10-20 during the 70s, the only song by the Band I EVER heard was Rag Mama Rag, which was a minor hit at the start of the decade. We knew all about prog rock, glam rock, Bowie, soul, disco, punk, new wave, two tone, ...... but The Band? Never heard of them until I was much older. Love them now.
Three lead singers Rick Danko (the one on this song Levon Helm (the drummer) and Richard Manuel (piano. All three are among the best vocalists in rock and roll.Also everyone of them is an unbelievable musician, Check out The Weight or Stage Fright or Endless Highway. All 3 of these are on at least one live album with two of them on more then 1 live album

I saw this film with my big brother when it first came out in Australia 1979 (?) and I’ve been in love with The Band ever since. I still play them at least once a week to this day. The best in the biz. 💖💖🥰🌸

Respectfully, coming from a deeper musical pool and vocabulary...better overall musicians. From the world's perspective, the Beatles came first, paving the way, breaking & making their own rules, with songwriting and recording inovations. The Band arrived, more mature in their access to other styles and influences, fusing them into an intoxicating moonshine never heard before. They flew in face trendy, hippie-pyschedelia and extended guitar solos, putting the emphasis on the song itself, stripping it back to core, roots goodness! Especially their early album covers, generic/ironic name and initial image.

My favorite song by The Band. Having said that, there are many others just as good in their catalog. The lead guitar player (Robbie Robertson) wrote all of the group's songs and they actually had three lead singers. By no stretch are they underrated though as they made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame upon their first year of eligibility, and, unlike many of the acts enshrined there, they actually deserved it.
The song of their time: THE WEIGHT!! A must watch. It's from this same live concert called "The Last Waltz". The whole concert was filmed and released as both an album and a movie.

You need to watch the Band’s last show, “The Last Waltz” = you’ll love it! Everyone’s in it! Everyone in The Band can sing, play multiple instruments, they were the first Electric band Bob Dylan had. Rick Denko, singing here, does another song at the concert, call “Stagefright” which is one of my all-time favourite songs. Robbie Robertson, lead guitar is one of the best ever. The Band "Brown Album" is one of the greatest all time last I heard.
The 'brown album' is now Bob Dylan's bootleg vol 11 (earlier the basement tapes) Greil Markus wrote a whole book on that album. One great Americana masterpiece.

"The Weight" is the best song they ever did in my opinion. Robbie Robertson (Lead guitar) played in the movie "Carny" that came out in 1980 with Jodie Foster.
Robertson who plays Patch, worked summer jobs in the traveling carny circuit when he was fourteen and fifteen, respectively. Besides providing inspiration for this film, Robertson's experiences working in the carny circuit as a teenager also inspired the song "Life is a Carnival" by The Band..........Plus he was a producer on the film.

Robbie grew up on 6 Nations Reserve, Ontario. His mother was Mohawk, his father, whom he never met, was a Jewish gambler. Ronnie Hawkins has an eye for talent, recognizing Robbie's early, songwriting ability. They groomed him as their inevitable guitarist.

I NEVER watch these kinds of videos, but I love this song - this performance - so much I had to witness someone hearing it for the first time. You didn’t disappoint. Different songs make me want to play different instruments, this one makes me want to play everything. Robbie’s guitar playing on this is liquid fire. Levon joining on backing vocals gives me chills. Rick’s vocal is so charged and emotional. And Garth’s sax solo is next level, perfect contrast to Robbie’s leads. Can’t leave out Richard, he always added something special to the mix. Seeing you take it in was really rewarding.

In 2004, "The Weight" was ranked 41st on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

Such a talented group. Rick Danko sang lead on this tune with his inimitable voice. Yet they had 3 lead singers all 3 of whom are worshipped by many including myself. I can't pick a favorite though if pushed I would likely default to Levon Helm. But then I would hear Richard Manuel and think once again of Ray Charles. While Danko's leads cannot be duplicated by anyone for my money. Together, they are melding harmonies from the highest balcony in Heaven, I'm sure. Yet, most if not all of their songbook, incredibly, was written by Robbie Robertson, the lead guitarist who in my memory sang backup when he at all making him, quite possibly, the biggest musical impact talent of them all.

Sadly, three of the members of The Band have passed on, including Rick Danko who is singling lead on this song. They all took turns singing and playing different instruments. The Band are legendary. They were so influential. They really honed their skills in the late 50s and early 60s backing Ronnie Hawkins. Then during the mid 60s they backed Bob Dylan at his controversial but groundbreaking electric gigs. In 1968 they made their first album, Music From Big Pink, as The Band. The clip here is from their last concert, The Last Waltz, filmed by Martin Scorsese in 1976. Robbie Robertson, the lead guitarist wrote their classic songs and he had three superb singers to do them justice. Here it is Rick Danko on bass. Equally soulful are the voices of Levon Helm on drums and Richard Manuel on piano (the very hairy one in the opening conversation!). Playing sax here is Garth Hudson who also played keyboards and was a genius musician. Sadly the only members left alive are Robbie and Garth. Check out other clips from The Last Waltz. I got to meet Rick Danko and Levon Helm in 1994. What a surreal experience that was! I’ve had a beautiful framed poster of The Band on my wall for the last 30 years. Bob Dylan's back up band when he went on tour in 66 and went electric. Hence the name, The Band. This performance was from the last wlatz, the greatest rock n roll doc IMAO. I would recommend watching any performances from this move. I believe you already reacted to The Weight with the Staples Singers.
The clip you showed was from Martin Scorcese's The Last Waltz, which was the last night that The Band played in that configuration. It was billed as there last gig and they invited many of the people that they had played with over the years to join them on stage: Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton to name some of them. The show was in 1977 and the movie was released in 1978 (It is worth watching the whole movie). The band re-formed in 1993 without the guitar player, Robbie Robertson. Since that time the piano player, Richard Manuel, the bass player, Rick Danko, and the drummer, Levon Helm, have passed away. They were an amazing band that could sing and play anything.

You could argue he was the 3rd best singer in the band. Great bass player. No one sounds like him, either vocally, or holding down the bottom.
They used to cut Robertson's mic because he can't sing. He likes to act but his voice was terrible. RR's mic was cut throughout The Last Waltz.

The Band!!! Absolutely essential to any understanding of popular music. Arguably one of the most influential groups ever. Dylan going electric, Clapton quitting Cream to reassess what he was doing, “The Last Waltz”, all because of The Band and all watersheds in music history. They showed another way forward that wasn’t commercial pop, or bombastic arena rock, or gentle folkie singer-songwriter stuff. And they can PLAY!
Ive been a fan of The Band for some 50 years. The name "The Band" came about after several failed namings and finally settled for "The Band" because a No of artists just referred to them as The Band. They supported on tours and studio work for a No of worldwide main acts during the 1960s and 1970s including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton etc etc etc as well as being a super talented group in their own right. SUCH A TALENT.
Ive listened to this song a hundred odd times but every time Garth Hudson plays that sax i get goosebumps and Rick Dankos heartbreaking vocals makes me want to cry. Such a special group of musicians, so sad it's only Garth left. Rip Richard, Rick, Levon and Robbie 😢
The performance you saw here was from The Last Waltz; their farewell concert in 1976. They go back to the early 60's. They were the group backing up Dylan when he converted from acoustic to electric in the late 60's, which is sorta where they got their name 'The Band'. The 'guy with the sax' is their keyboard player. He's a musical genius; he can play anything. All of these guys play multiple instruments. Most of the music was written by Robbie Robertson, the lead guitarist, but 3 of them rotate singing. This was Rick Danko, the bass player singing. Levon Helm, the drummer, sang many of their songs, and the piano player, Richard Manuel, was considered the lead singer. Sadly, Levon, Richard, and Rick have passed on.

The Band was on their own a great band but they were the backing band for Bob Dylan but they were a mixture of rock, Southern rock, folk rock and country and a whole lot more of different types of music but they were one of the best bands around and still hold a special place in my heart

Levon Helm, drummer/vocals, was one of the greatest talents of all time. Sadly, we lost him on April 12, 2012. Such a beautiful, kind soul. He did a little acting too. He played Loretta Lynn's daddy in The Coal Miners Daughter. He was also in The Right Stuff. The Band recorded some great music. Rick Danko died in December 1999.
