The Band gets their name from starting out as the backup band for Rompin’ Romney Hawkins, followed up by backing Bob Dylan when he went electric. They are special in that there is talent all over the place instead of a star. The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Ophelia are all great songs. Actually if you like them, it is hard to find a bad one.

They weren't his backing band at newport in '65 ... that was mike bloomfield, al kooper, and members of the butterfield blues band. They were his backing band for his 66 world tour, a year after he went electric.

  • @FleagleSangria

This song breaks my heart everytime. Especially now. Of course its the words that speak so much. I mean just look at this line..
    "Now there's no love
    As true as the love
    That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before"
Whats more heartbreaking than a love that could have had a story, a wonderful story of romance, commitment, family and memories but ended before the happy ever got started. It goes untold. Thats when you start noticing everything is so heavy. Even the clouds hang a bit lower than ever before. The rain seems like a flowing of tears at your door. And you dont notice the sunshine due to the depression.
The lonely deep isolation nearly drives one mad and crazy. Every corner seems to be haunted by that love lost.
"Without your love I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall, it's a lonely fall
    Since you've gone it's a losing battle
Stampeding cattle, they rattle the walls"
The song places us at the scene in a cabin I think. Alone. With a thunderstorm beating at the doors and even the imagery of cattle stampeding is placed as the persons thoughts just beating his heads thoughts about that love. Rattling the mans very soul because since shes gone he knows its a losing battle to get back to normal.
"And the dawn don't rescue me no more"
Even a new day that comes doesnt let him forget. Theyll be no nee starts. His heart is crushed.
A very moving song that mixes old western ideas with a crying voice from Rick Danko as he sings in that yearning amazing voice that he had. He has a tear in his voice. A pain. And it fits this song perfectly.
Robbies guitar bites through the song ringing in the strain of the emotions within the words to express it in a way that the heartbroken pounds on the wall with the hurts of lost love.
Levons drums plod to keep the beat of a man who has to throw love letters away in order to even cope. The drums set that feeling of barely feeling like lifting your feet to the next step due to the heaviness of the loss.
One of the greatest sad songs ever written and the performance is lightning in a bottle of whiskey.
Thank you for posting this one that no one else really does in reactions.
If you get the chance go back and really listen to the words and bring them up to read them. Paints a powerful picture of the heart.

The interviews Martin Scorsese does with the band members, throughout the movie are worth watching all by themselves. Hope you can eventually cover all the guests who performed in The Last Waltz. Many people have said, including the artists themselves, most of their performances that night were the best of their careers. You’d be one to fully appreciate the movie.

This is the group that other musicians listen to!! Truly one of the most unique and talented bands of our time! 3 lead vocalists, all wonderful! This is Rick Danko, but Richard Manuel and Levon Helm also sang lead. This is from the movie "The Last Waltz" and every music fan should own a copy! Dylan, Joni, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, The Staple Singers, Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Ronnie Hawkins, Emmylou Harris, Paul Butterfield, Ringo, Ronnie Wood....hell everybody was there! I'd have a hard time narrowing my recommendation to one Band song, so I'll give you a few......."The Weight" "Ophelia" "The Shape I'm In" and the beautiful "Acadian Driftwood", but I promise you there are so many more. Hell, just make a song list, put it on the wall and throw a dart. I'll guarantee you hit a great song!

No one in THe Band was the weakest link, less of all Robbie and Rick. Robbie wrote the lyrics and he knew how would do the song most justice, in this case Rick. Like Robbie said Rick would sing it with pouring all of his emotions into it, but still not make it come off as self pity. Both genioues Robbie and Rick. This band "the Band" is the type of band that will get your grandfather off the alcohol and get your grand mother back on the pill.
    big thanks to Martin Scorsese.
with out his vison to make this movie it would be lost forever.
and you would be watching mtv type crap
if you are young, get your self a copy and watch it with your folks.
now that would be a great reaction.

Garth Hudson (sax) - could pretty much play any instrument and was a monster on Organ. The talent of this group could collapse a stage.

I believe he omitted a verse that's included in the studio version. But this performance is next level.

You are absolutely right they cut a section of lyrics and if I ain’t mistaken a section of music also, which is a shame since it’s one of their best songs!!

@@nrwlkguy It believe the CD of this has the complete song, but it's been a while since I've listened to it.

@@jnagarya519. I think so too, but on the film (DVD) is where they shorten the song.
