Whether he hadn't trained well (possibly) or completely underestimated Kinchen (definitely), it turned out to be a grave mistake because he clearly lost this bout. And I say this as Tommy's greatest fan...I watched this fight live back then and after round four when he went down, I remember thinking that he'd either not recovered from the Hagler fight or wasn't in the proper mindset for this one. Hearns fought everybody he didn't dodge anybody he wanted to fight those Fighters I'm sure he could have had a career and cherry-picked like a lot of Fighters do these days but he was a real fighter
he was being written off at this point, he had a few surprises up that long sleeve of his though, including the Leonard rematch that most people thought he won.

Hearns is a very smart smart fighter. When he got hit with that over hand right. Tommy was knocked down. He beat the count, but you can tell he was definitely dazed and confused. After that knockdown Hearns did what most boxers are ashamed to do or just wasn't taught to do, and that is hold. Hold on to your opponent to buy yourself some time and to get your head clear.
Tommy's biggest fault was never learning the art of Clinching. I loved him when he was in the Ring arguably my favourite Boxer after Ali what a great Champion Hearns is a Legend
18:15 Tommys slow but he gets there, in the end. If he hada swallowed his pride after the first Leonard fight n worked on his survival skillz & how to fight while hurt he might never have lost to Hagler & Barkley. This was the last fight that the myth that Hearns had a bad chin survived, after this one nobody ever had him in serious trouble again.
Kinchen looks like Aaron Pryor and also looks like the soul of Pryor was in Kinchen's chin. Was incredible how well he took those right hands like the ones at 47:18. reminded me of Arguello when he nailed Pryor in the 13th round with a right hand that snaps the head back obviously Arguello was coming, and Hearns threw that right hand walking backwards.
He did lose points - the fourth round was scored 10-7. He lost two points for getting knocked down and the ref docked an additional point for the excessive holding
Say what you want about Hearns holding, but what is Mills Lane doing? He literally said NOTHING to him the entire time this happened? And then wrongly deducts a point. I say he is wrong for deducting it because he didn't warn him at all before taking it. Comedy of errors from the ref
II can only imagine James instructed to: 1- 4 Keep the distance close as to "drown" Hearns' punch extension B. Parry the jabs then counter (or lead) with that looping delayed overhand right he always practiced in sparring as career matured C. Smother Hearns' punches 5-10 If still standing, increase the pressure. I doubt they thought Hearns would last until 12th. At about 18:41 (4th round), longtime observers of James will recognize that insane forward pressure with unrestrained abandon (as he did to KO Alex Ramos) clubbing opponents into submission. I watched James at a public work out prior to this match-up where he looked very sharp against his chief 175+ sparring partner. Not surprised James did so well, had it been anyone other than an elite former champion (Hearns), James gets the "upset". This was a perfect match-up for James, to this day no one was more deserved to fight (and win) a world title than James, we can "attribute" that to his telling Carl and Don King to go to hell.
Tommy was under a lot of pressure after the knockdown, he must of known in his heart that another knock out lose would of probably ended his career. I remember watching this and then as now I still had Tommy winning, he boxed and kept the combinations going while Kinchen was throwing single punches, it made the rounds close but to me Hearns boxed his way back into the fight. He did look banged up but that doesn’t mean he was losing. Take a look at the first Chavez v Taylor fight, Meldrick was busted up quite badly but he was ahead on points up until the unfortunate stoppage. As for the commentary Bernstein & Clancy was one of my favourite combinations, Clancy was calling it right, Kinchen just wasn’t letting his hands go enough. On a note; I vaguely remember there was controversy after the fight regarding Kinchen having pain killing injections for a shoulder complaint, there was a debate that the injections could of numbed his nervous system making him immune to punches, I have just never seen anyone take shots like the from Hearns and not even flinch, incredible. He did have a TKO loss to Virgil Hill and Hill wasn’t a heavy hitter, boxing can be strange at times. Anyway, he was a great fighter and was probably one good punch away in that 3rd round from having a big pay day and career change. As for Tommy, I’ve always said he was one of the most of exciting fighter sever, a real warrior to the end. 🥊

The king 👑.. Thomas hearns.... and Floyd Mayweather could never ever can come near this monster Thomas hearns..!!..
🎉
Until he encountered the Marvellous One ☝️
@@Rosco-P.Coldchainthen the marvelous one was put through a close affair with both lightweight out of shape and old Duran and Welterweight leanord, let’s not act like Hagler was invincible
@@juanreyes6955never knocked out tho
What a boxer Hearns was, what a great career!
😮 ข
Great fight, I don't know how I missed this from back in the day. You can argue that Hearns used excessive holding rd 4. Hearns boxing skills so great and he showed so'ooo much heart he earned the win....Impressive!
It's one of the forgotten gems alright
Hearns had fast hands
And a soft chin
How the hell can Al Bumstien say Hearns is not a top fighter, he's been through wars with the top best fighters
@@mozfonky well the rematch both way past there prime there 1st fight the only one that matters both at the peak of there careers that's y sugar is an all time one of the best ever pound for pound after his fight with hagler the rest don't matter ray beat the best everin Duran Hagler Hearns
He's an asshole. Hearns is top 3 all time
@@jimmcclung5484 Hagler won that fight !! Ray couldn't beat Hagler if he was drunk with a cast on his leg and one arm in a Sling !!!
great fight🥊👍🏿💯
Hearns could have been disqualified for holding. That was ridiculous.
Yb
How smart was he. Brawled with Hagler dumb. Could not hold on to sugar ray when he was in trouble. Also knocked out by
Barkley knocked hearts out
Tommy's biggest fault was never learning the art of Clinching. I loved him when he was in the Ring arguably my favourite Boxer after Ali what a great Champion Hearns is a Legend
Tommy's jab was always world class
I'm Rooting for the Motor city cobra ,win or lose come on left hook and put your weight on em😉👍
18:15
Tommys slow but he gets there, in the end.
If he hada swallowed his pride after the first Leonard fight n worked on his survival skillz & how to fight while hurt he might never have lost to Hagler & Barkley.
This was the last fight that the myth that Hearns had a bad chin survived, after this one nobody ever had him in serious trouble again.
Tommy Hearns is Totally class act and super fighter!!!!!!!
Great fight.
I believe in this fight Hearns was knocked down
I guess it was a positive outcome for Hearns he won the decision(should have lost) and his weak performance caused Leonard to want to fight him again.
Robo robo robo
Hearns should have lost points for the excessive holding, refusing to let go IMHO
Tommy incredible fighter and gentlemen ❤
Tommy was special.
He really was
He hit him with Everything but the Kinchen sink.
Wow 🤣🤣
The referee needs to be big enough to separate them. That was ridiculous holding
Bo Derek looking 🔥
She don't look like that now !!!
Maybe the best looking I ever thought she looked. Wasn't a Bolero/Tarzan era fan of hers. Here, she looked finely refined
it was close, the Hitman didn't beat up Kinchen, James was tough
Bo Derek in the crowd, Beautiful ❤
Tommy Hearns always did the most hilarious things when he was hurt like really who thinks to hold on to the referee as he trying to break
WHAT A FIX
