I'll add my 3 cents since this is a much debated question. Tommy didn't have a glass jaw or he wouldn't have won so many fights at so many different weights, but he did have maybe a copper jaw which made him vulnerable at higher weights. Barkley had more of an iron jaw; against Duran he was probably really tired[no discredit to Duran, who fought with incredible skill].
Tommy Hearns The Hitman the cobra one of my favorite fighters from Detroit Iran Barkley from the boogie down Bronx very good two fights they were good looking out coach
Duran would turn with the punch and it was very difficult for Barkley who punched wide to land a solid shot on him. Duran was never given credit for his defense. Tommy also fought the wrong fight against Barkley. Hearns had great boxing skills and either by choice or be default he got into a close quarter brawl with Barkley. playing right into his hands.
I think Hearns chose the wrong strategy for this fight. He should have consistently moved and out-boxed Barkley from a distance, rather than going for all this close in fighting. I think he would have won the fight if he had done that. It's the same reason Leonard lost his first fight against Duran, but won the second.
Gawd what a brutal fight. Both fighters left it all in the ring. Tommy, almost unbeatable--though no man is unbeatable--in his younger, lighter years, went through too much weight change and too many brutal fights in my opinion. I think Hearns was robbed in Leonard II.
He was robbed in both Leonard fights, because Ray made him fight at Welterweight in the first , Hearn's looked like an anorexic supermodel. Starved to death. Don't see how anybody can look at Tommy in that fight and call it fair, looked like A burnt match. Then Ray made Lalond fight him looking like an anorexic supermodel
@@timpenfield5 I don’t think Hearns was robbed since in the first fight he was clearly out of the feet and was still fighting the in welterweight before moving up to super welterweight / light middleweight. I don’t think Leonard would lose a rematch against a more experienced and more battle hardened Hearns. In their 1981 fight, Leonard and Hearns have the same amount of experience. I have either Leonard winning a UD in a close fight or Leonard winning a TKO in a close fight or Hearns slightly above in points. A rematch between a Prime Leonard vs Prime Hearns 12-15 round fight in the super welterweight / light middleweight or middleweight division with Hearns who is now more experienced and battle hardened would be a great fight, but I still see Leonard winning a TKO slightly above points or Hearns above points or a UD slightly above Hearns in points. Remember Leonard came out of his three year retirement who did not train properly during his hiatus to fight Hagler in 1987, so Hearns has more advantage than the ring-rusted and now father-time and slower Leonard (Leonard is still faster than Hearns but lost speed since the first retirement) in their 1989 rematch. Leonard is more out of his prime than Hagler was. Prime Leonard (before the detached retina if he reaches middleweight) vs Prime Hagler would be a great fight to watch, but I see Leonard winning a UD and almost getting knocked down by Hagler.
Look at the swelling above Barkley's eyes & look at the bridge of Hearns nose. You have to be willing to get your faced smashed to be a boxer. They train to take a punch. What a life, no thanks.
Barkley should hit more stern solid straight and move side to side if he wants. Cause I knew Herns was coming quick hard straight solid and consistent in pt 2. I think Barkley going out. As many think if you let Hearns ge tthat center ring its over and you out.
@Omni King I think I do. Benn would’ve likely ran low on stamina and got knocked out. It’s irrelevant to reality though. The hilarious 3 knockdown rule kinda ruined the fight for me. Benn was known for punching behind the head and Barkley got hit with several of those.
clearly, he was making weight each time, but Barkley always looked and moved like a much larger fighter... he seemed like a HW, even when fighting at MW
Yeah. I always say each fighter has their natural weight and each time they go above it, they face an uphill battle, and Tommy seemed almost unbeatable at welter. I think you can see that here: Barkley is a naturally bigger man than Hearns and had more potential to damage. But Hearns fought a smart fight with unmatched determination--which he showed also in Leonard II--and hurt Barkley many times but just couldn't quite put him down.

Good fight, but Barkley outworked Hearns in this fight. Hearns fought Barkley's fight. Hearns is best fighting from a distance so he can get some leverage/power on those long arms of his. Stick, jab, throw those bombs from a distance and move is Hearns best fighting mode.
How many low blows from Barkley does it take for Mills Lane to take a point away? I think Barkley was doing it on purpose it was always a left hook and was when Barkley’s left side was close to the ropes and happened when ref was out of position to see.
Barkley was headbutting Hearns in the nose the whole fight whole the ref said nothing, it gave him the advantage. Both fights are true warriors in real class act as you can see in this fight. Shouts out to both fighters it was a great show. (Legends).
Hearns did continue boxing after this match. After this match Hearns won 11 bouts and lost only once in his third before last bout to Uriah Grant I think. Barkley after this fight won 14 bouts and lost 12 with one draw and he lost the last six fights of his career before retiring. Barkley won his next fight after this fight. Then lost the title to James Toney and became champ one more time in 1997.
Saying he became the champ again in 1997 is a bit of a stretch. It was the "World Boxing Board" heavyweight title, a sanctioning body that hardly anyone recognizes or cared about.
Hearns did everything he could to win that fight, but it didn't matter. Barkley never really slowed down much, and was in phenomenal shape physically. The only guys Hearns had problems with were guys who had magnificent chins, iron heads, and stayed low. Hearns couldn't keep them off of him, especially as he moved up in weight. Hearns was a very underrated inside fighter, but going up against a prime Barkley was draining for anybody no matter how skilled they were. It cracks me up sometimes to hear corner men, and trainers saying things like, "you are making this fight difficult", "you can make this easy by using your jab on the outside". It's pretty obvious that Hearns tried that approach several times, but it didn't have an effect of Barkley's chin, and when a guy doesn't stop coming forward, and cuts the ring off well, there is nothing else you can do other than try to win the fight on the inside hoping that he tires out, or gets stunned by a punch. Hearns fought a great fight, and he showed he had a great guard in this fight, but Barkley was just one of those guys who was a Joe Frazier type of fighter, and we all know Joe Frazier took years off of Ali in the ring. The difference is that Barkley was a little bit quicker with his feet, and he could cut the ring off a little bit better. Frazier's preferred style of footwork was a little bit different, although he did change his footwork against certain opponents that he had trouble with by using a more traditional style of footwork like in his second fight against Foreman. That gave him more mobility, but it wasn't his natural style. Barkley was like a combination of Frazier, and Foreman as far as his style.
If you notice most boxers who show mental effects of getting hit too much used to be the most exciting boxers in the sport,no matter the era. Barkley was one of those fighters, can't really understand his speech nowadays. And for Tommy as well. Great fighters though but both took alot of punishment upstairs.
Hell of a proud performance by Hearns, he had options to check out in that fight but in true Hitman style he beat the count every time & looked to get straight back out there bounty hunting. 6 rds Barkley with a 10-08, Tommy 1,2 & 8 going into the 9th. Barkley 9, Hearns 10, 11, 12 Barkley was a nightmare, a warrior, the most under rated 3 x weight World Champ in history. Was rd 4 a 10-08? Did Tommy do enough to bring it back to 10-09? Why didn't Barkley lose a point for all the low blows he was landing? That fight could easily have gone Hearns' way. They say Hill was Hearns last great performance but much like Mugabai showed the true essence of WHO Hagler was, this fight showed the true essence of Hearns. Barkley obliterated him in their first meeting, & now 5 years later Hearns is without Emanuel Steward who wanted him to retire, & he knows he is a fading fighter. So what does he do? Does he make 5 soft defenses against fighters ranked 10-15 n milk the title for what cash he can get out of it? No, this is THE HITMAN we are talking about so he seeks out his bogeyman, his last available nightmare n has a showdown with him looking to settle the score. He did more than that, it was an iconic display of will, self belief, courage & Hope. It was almost everything that underpins what is GREAT about boxing. Tommy Hearns was something else. 🥊
Tommy had a weak chin? I always thought people exaggerated. After seeing this one again - i know they were. He had a good chin. Not solid brass - but absolutely not a glass one.
It reminds some of Amir Khan. Tommy backs up with hands down and gets hit a lot flusher than most elite fighters. Most fighters don't get hit with those shots. When Tommy sees the punch coming, he's a lot more durable.
Here's that discussion again. See my 3 cents in the other one. I put Tommy at 'copper', not glass. Great point at how flush he gets hit though. That may apply to virtually any fighter, if you get hit completely unaware like that, it may rock you.
great counterpunch Barkley knocked Hearns down with round 4 . flash knockdown, caught Hearns off balance. announcer full of b.s. saying hearns was hurt by it . this fight goes the distance, with both fighters receiving and punishing each other . lot of cumulative damage to both
If Hearns is in today's era with Dmitry Bivol, these 2 will have a very good fight. Hearns is a good and skillful boxer too but his endurance will be a question mark. If Hearns cannot put away Bivol, he will lose by a large margin. If Hearns is going up against Artur Beterbiev, it is almost a 90% ko victory for Artur.
Barkley's just one of those fighters who defies logic. Hearns was and always will be the more talented fighter for me yet he lost twice to Barkley. The first one could be argued as a lucky punch from nowhere but the second time was no luck at all, Barkley just roughed him up and stuck to the task for 12 rounds. Punishing fight.
Iran's a real Warrior he fought hard and he was fraud. He won and rightfully so, But still the judge is still a z ituatio where a good, hard working man I was given too little for so much. ❤
What was Mills Lane thinking Barkley's low blows were constant 1/12 he should've taken a Point by the 6th Round, how often have you seen Hearns Fight like that, his Nose was well Broken, Barkley is TAF and looks mean as hell!! Two warriors, Hearns has got a suspect Chin but a huge huge Heart, easily 1 of my fav Boxers
I feel sorry for both these great warriors...they made millions, Hearns tens of millions, and both ended up broke. So sad what boxing does, even to its best. Tommy, never a great speaker in his younger days, is so thick tongued now you can barely understand him. Barkley ended up living on the streets. How?
You just thought you wanted Roberto Duran. Duran whooped Davey Moore and went on to teach Barkley how great a fighter he wasn't. Barkley was a champ at one time Roberto Duran is a legend. Watch Duran destroy Davey Moore and check out the shockwaves that goes through his face when Duran hits him so hard he's airborn when he hits the canvas. There's a precious moment is what the ref answered as to why he didn't stop the fight. Iran Barkley tried as hard as he could to revenge the beating Duran put on his buddy but even with a baseball bat he still would have lost but he would never admit it.
Barkley is clearly blind as a bat. That's why he can't see or measure four feet away. Hearns should have stayed in the center of the ring and out punched Barkley while moving side to side. Hearns' left hook to the body is vicious. He could land that , the jab and the right hand all night. By the 9th round Barkley could have been chopped up so he could finish him like James Toney did. What a fight though. Barkley just seemed to work harder.
A younger Hearns could of carried out that strategy effectively, but at this stage of his career he did not have the legs to move for 12 rounds consistently.
Iran Barkley did something that Sugar Ray Leonard couldn't do. Beating Thomas Hearns.............TWICE.

How many low blows from Barkley does it take for Mills Lane to take a point away? I think Barkley was doing it on purpose it was always a left hook and was when Barkley’s left side was close to the ropes and happened when ref was out of position to see.
Why do I think of Biz Markie when I see Iran Barkley?
Barkley was headbutting Hearns in the nose the whole fight whole the ref said nothing, it gave him the advantage. Both fights are true warriors in real class act as you can see in this fight. Shouts out to both fighters it was a great show. (Legends).
I noticed their heads close too though I didn't see any clear butts. But also it did look like Barkley got away with several low blows.
Just like Holyfield.

Poor Tommy just couldn’t keep that guy off of him.
Tommy Hearns, lo mejor que ví.
I didn´t knew that history, thank you for sharing!
You did it Barkley good fight 👍
If you notice most boxers who show mental effects of getting hit too much used to be the most exciting boxers in the sport,no matter the era. Barkley was one of those fighters, can't really understand his speech nowadays. And for Tommy as well.
Great fighters though but both took alot of punishment upstairs.
Barkley owned Hearns...but Hearns is a true warrior and legend
Fuk, Tommy's nose man, crunch, Love both these guys.
Great fight

Que pelea se metieron estos gigantes de boxeo
Which 3 belts did Iran have as Wikipedia said he had 2 belts ?
Hell of a proud performance by Hearns, he had options to check out in that fight but in true Hitman style he beat the count every time & looked to get straight back out there bounty hunting.
6 rds Barkley with a 10-08, Tommy 1,2 & 8 going into the 9th.
Barkley 9, Hearns 10, 11, 12
Barkley was a nightmare, a warrior, the most under rated 3 x weight World Champ in history.
🥊
Buena pelea
Means good fight
Barkley was scary as hell.
Hearns was scary as hell . . in his earlier, lighter years.
Tommy is a class act
Tommy had a weak chin? I always thought people exaggerated. After seeing this one again - i know they were. He had a good chin. Not solid brass - but absolutely not a glass one.
It wasn't weak but it was definitely suspect.
Neither solid nor glass
😀😀😀
It reminds some of Amir Khan. Tommy backs up with hands down and gets hit a lot flusher than most elite fighters. Most fighters don't get hit with those shots. When Tommy sees the punch coming, he's a lot more durable.
@@afarber87 I mostly agree with you but Khans chin is significantly worse than Tommy's
Here's that discussion again. See my 3 cents in the other one. I put Tommy at 'copper', not glass. Great point at how flush he gets hit though. That may apply to virtually any fighter, if you get hit completely unaware like that, it may rock you.
Barkley just too strong for Hearns who was really a welterweight...
Hearns got knocked down twice! Thats how u get judged and lose a fight
Duran was simply a beast with them hands ✋️ 🙌
BARKLY LIKE A TIGER
Lo más bonito del boxeo es que no hay odio ni rencor aparte de qué es un😮
The fight that end tommy career
Not true Tommy went on to become light heavy weigh champ
One of my favourite refs - Mills Lane. Hope you're getting it on up there. R.I.P.
great counterpunch Barkley knocked Hearns down with round 4 . flash knockdown, caught Hearns off balance. announcer full of b.s. saying hearns was hurt by it . this fight goes the distance, with both fighters receiving and punishing each other . lot of cumulative damage to both
That punch actually looked slightly like a slap
What a war.
Loved both these guys, Hearns naturally lighter, Barclay was a big underrated beast!
THE HIT MAN HEARNS-A LEGEND
I wonder if Iran Barkley can resist to the left hook of Felix Trinidad by his jaw, too?
if I put up with Duran and hearns Trinidad too
Bye,bye Tommy.
If Duran had any brains he should have been at this fight to accept a fight for all 3 belts afterwards at 1:19:53
Iran's a real Warrior he fought hard and he was fraud. He won and rightfully so, But still the judge is still a z ituatio where a good, hard working man I was given too little for so much. ❤
Duran is Duran!
How?
Awful
Surrounded by thieves, bad decisions ..It's terrible.
Most fighters are severely uneducated and that results in financial ruin
Is that really true?! My gawd. Hard to believe, really . .
"I could have beaten this guy when I was drunk" ~ Iran Barkley
Are you sure? 14:33
someone GIF that
You just thought you wanted Roberto Duran.
@@jakeyb25 Agreed
still odd that Tommy couldn't beat Barkley, who was really just a good-quality journeyman type fighter.
@Guiltysimpsonboxing who were the atg's that Barkley beat?
@Guiltysimpsonboxing So you've got nothing? got it.
Everybody has that one guy they can't beat..
Pamela, I was Married to Nelly across the street from you guys, remember my son Joe the Karate kid. Good luck
Barkley’s style reminiscent of Yory Boy Campas style.
Thought Tommy pulled it out. Gave him 8-12. And the first 2 rounds. 11 n 12 couldve gon either way. Barkley dominated 3-7. LIKE TOMMY DOMININATED 1-2.
I thought Tommy should’ve won too
The Blade cut The Cobra.....
