Vividly remember watching this show in the 90's as a kid. Thought this show was the greatest and I still do. I really do wish for a reboot or something.
They ruined it with too many interviews of the competitors, trying to invent storylines. If they had let the events speak for themselves, it would have been better. Also, the events in the original were better.
This episode brings me back so much nostalgia. i was a big AG fan when i was real little, and i only had one episode ever recorded on tape. i never once knew that the episode i had was this episode, the very first episode. i watched it all the time when i was spending time with my grandmother. my most favorite AG episode ever.
I still remember this premiere season of American Gladiators back in the Fall of 1989. I was really inspired by the contenders and the Gladiators alike. They play tough, they compete hard, and they play to win; while they maintain good sportsmanship, comradery, and a positive attitude. The events, that everyone competed in, resemble the games and activities that we used to engage in when we were kids and having fun. I thought that was cute, it made me smile. I will always remember American Gladiators as one of the most positive contributions to American entertainment in my lifetime. I really do miss it.
I vividly remember watching this with my father when it was first broadcast and seeing Craig Williams smash all of the Gladiators... The hit that Nitro took was brutal.
problem was they had "heavyweight" gladiators who were basically just chosen for looks against "middleweight" competitors who actually had collegiate sport backgrounds. It's actually a miracle nobody was seriously injured those first few episodes.
Yeah. Of all the goofy things that made the first half of season 1 different from the format the show settled into from the second half of S1 onward, that might be the funniest one.
Interesting note regarding the seemingly random order of games from episode to episode: according to the Glads' DVD commentary, all the events were filmed out of order, and usually during an insanely long taping process. They'd typically film three to five episodes' worth of competitions in a row. When the time came to edit the shows, the games were arranged into the most visually engaging or entertaining order. That's why you'll sometimes see the Glads or contenders look seriously gassed during one game, then appear completely fine the next. There was one exception to this, though only slightly: one of the contenders suffered an ankle injury during an event that seriously affected his performance for the rest of the show, so all the games following the injury are presented in the order he played them. Of course, by the time the episodes actually aired, it sound to me like not too many people outside of the production staff or the players themselves actually cared about such minutiae.
1:03, the first appearance of the show’s iconic theme song, composed by Academy Award winner Bill Conti, who, from 1977 to 2008, conducted the Academy Awards orchestra 19 times, was a frequent collaborator of the late John G. Mmm, I love that early-installment weirdness. While I was never a big fan of the gladiators playing as caricatures (having not seen season 1 until much later), there is, admittedly something rather charming about it, especially in Malibu's case. I love this show. Hoping to see more posted from this channel! :D

After Saturday cartoons, after saturday WWF!, American Gladiators was on. And it was in 144p. Yeah baby. I had so many American Gladiator toys out when AG was on. Playing along with the show. Making cool fucking forts for my toys. Role playing my little heart out.

Favorite event in season one was Assault, because of the different kinds of cover along the course. Was sad when they changed the cover to the blocks in Season 2, but it was still fun.
For years, I thought the term "pugil stick, " as in those giant Q-tip-looking things they swing around during the Joust, was just a show-specific term. Turns out they've actually been a standard tool in military training for centuries. Funny, I can definitely see the connection now, but AG certainly made it more iconic.

So... uhm... 2 new videos posted after nearly 10 years of dormancy, and then 6 months of more dormancy? How long until more? Seriously, WE WANT MORE! ;-)
AG now streams 24/7 on Pluto.tv . It's not even any shady stuff as it's owned by Viacom and it's 100% free. You just have to set up a free account and deal with a lot of poorly timed commercials. Like, they'll literally cut to commercial in the middle of an event in progress so that sucks ass but at least you can binge watch half a season if you have nothing else to do with your day.
1:28 - “And now the larger than life American Gladiators march into competition area. There’s a lot of athletic ability in this group including two former N.F.L. players. They’re tough, determined and ready for competition.”
I've recently got myself a new TV today and came across this on Pluto TV and I've been watching loads of it and it's pretty exciting. I watched the UK version of Gladiators when it was on many years ago as that's where I'm from. Getting a smart TV and an Android has opened my eyes to other possibilities.
This first half of season 1 is kind of weird if you're only familiar with how the show was from the second half of the season and forever onward. All the Glads are cutting promos like wannabe WWF stars, many of the usual games are still being experimented with (resulting in some unfortunate injuries, but I figure that would be inevitable regardless; you can never completely guarantee safety in sports entertainment), and the usually zebra-striped referees are instead dressed in a bizarre medieval executioner's costume (In a Roman-inspired arena? Doc Brown, are you sure you refueled the Delorean all the way?). Still, as Mike Adamle indicates in the introduction to every episode, the show is very competitive and visually interesting, two things that kept it at the top of the ratings for many years and are still quite appealing even today. I welcome Seth Rogen's upcoming AG revival with open arms, and I hope it'll show all these younger sports entertainment shows (American Ninja Warrior, eat your heart out) how it's done.
I totally agree. The WWF-style personas were inauthentic, I'm glad they switched to exaggerated versions of themselves. The executioner outfits were so corny & made no sense. They eventually made it work, and made some entertaining shows. The crowd always seemed odd to me as a kid. I could tell most weren't fans, just people on vacation a Universal.

It was really abstract in the beginning. Once they settled into using smaller scores and worked on balancing the point distribution so no one event could have too big of an impact on things, it got a lot more sensible.
The men in this episode are legit. They are actual athletes. Bigger than a few of the gladiators. You could tell there was some hesitancy on part of gladiators
Yeah, there is no way the gladiators would be able to compete against athletes like that week after week. It was not a sustainable model, that’s why they changed it.

I loved this show when I was little.
Agreed Amanda
This show is just like professional wrestling. It has a certain charm to it. And Characters with Personalities.
I'm am so confused by the scoring system sometimes lol
It was really abstract in the beginning. Once they settled into using smaller scores and worked on balancing the point distribution so no one event could have too big of an impact on things, it got a lot more sensible.
The men in this episode are legit. They are actual athletes. Bigger than a few of the gladiators. You could tell there was some hesitancy on part of gladiators
Yeah, there is no way the gladiators would be able to compete against athletes like that week after week. It was not a sustainable model, that’s why they changed it.
