    I'm glad there's people who seek out and take care of old computers. It's amazing how many people go "oh this is just old junk" and toss them out. I rather give old machines a nice, easy, and long retirement they deserve. I still have an old Packard Bell 486, my parents got it as their first ever computer. When they passed it down to me when I was little, I still had an NCR 286 I played old DOS games on. Moving up to Windows 3.1 was amazing.
    Then I stepped up to a Tiger PC Pentium 2. Pushed that thing so hard.

    We made these or a similar 12 inch monitor at Westclox Dumbarton Scotland for IBM in Greenock Scotland they were called Conestoga by IBM. The European version had Panasonic CRTs with integrated yoke. Their was a magnetic linearity coil in the middle of the main PCB designed by IBM which gave them poorish convergence at bottom middle. The convergence spec was .01 in middle and 0.03 at edges if I remember correctly. Your convergence looks fine . Think ours required a wedge tool to take the back off and used Torx screws. Our bezels were sprayed grey

    Wow, boy do I remember that model. That was a staple in the training rooms at a Law Firm support center that I worked at. When they upgraded in the late 90s from 486 s to Pentium machines oh, I got a whole bunch of equipment about 15 monitors and 20 desktops. Repurposed and sold them all. Still have two of the monitors left and they still work to This Day in 2020.❤❤

    I didn't know the full name of that program was Razzle Dazzle or that it was a shareware program. The dazzle.exe I'd always played with had to have been from no later than 1990 or 1991. Eventually I opened it in DEBUG and found information on keypresses to activate various patterns and the command-line options.
    One advantage to older analog monitors is they can display VGA modes better. For example, the border on mode 13 (it's like the C64 border but much narrower) is cut off on newer LCD monitors.

    A few more details about the Made in Taiwan part: As previously mentioned by another commenter, the FCC ID points to Tatung, but to be more specific it most likely was manufactured by Tatung's subsidiary Chunghwa Picture Tubes (華映 or CPT). They produce LCD panels now, despite sticking to their old name, but back in the day they were one of the largest OEM CRT manufacturers in the world. This was most likely made in their factory in Longtan, which is nowadays less than an hour's drive away from Taipei.

    AFAIK some of IBM's monitor (notably the 5153 and maybe the 5154) were made by Tatung (which I belive is/was a Taiwanese company), so that may explain why this monitor has "MADE IN TAIWAN" written on the back sticker.

    • @AaronSmart.online
      @AaronSmart.online 4 роки тому +2

      The FCC ID on the label matches Tatung Company. They're based in Taipei, and were my first guess when I saw a Taiwanese CRT

    • @kevwang0712
      @kevwang0712 4 роки тому +2

      Tatung is still around, but most of their production lines have moved to China (of course), although their indestructible rice cookers are still made here in Taiwan because they're a national symbol of sorts. If you know anyone from Taiwan, ask them about the rice cookers and they'll nod with appreciation.

      Hmm. I encountered a 1996 Tatung 1024x768 CRT at work over the summer. I actually used it for a few months because I was upgrading computers in a simultaneous setup with a KVM switch. No other monitor could match the switching speed of that old Tatung. It doesn't even have an OSD - the controls are knobs under the front lip.

    • @Alexis_du_60
      @Alexis_du_60 4 роки тому

      @@nickwallette6201 they also need to upscale everything to their native resolution... Wheras CRTs don't give a damn about resolution, they display it as long it's within their limits.

    Kevin, here's a tip on cleaning sticker residue from your IBM PS/2 monitor; first you have to soak a paper towel in pure Isopropyl Alcohol (98-99%) and leave it for about 15-20 minutes. Next, take the soaked paper towel and gently wipe on the sticker residue. Then, take a lint-free microfiber cloth and wipe the spot until it's dry.
    I have used this method to clean sticker residue off PC cases and laptops and so far it works like a charm. Your mileage may vary.

    • @kaitlyn__L

      What does soaking the paper towel for so long accomplish? I imagine the fibres are fully saturated before the 15 minute mark. Removing some component added in the towels’ manufacture?

    Had an 8503, 8512, 8513, 8514, 8515, and 9515. I believe I still have the 8514. The 8513 let its magic smoke out one day. The 8512 always had a bad cable where it went into the back of it, so I'd have to wiggle it around to get everything to display right. Eventually the power supply in it went. No idea about what happened to the others, I know I threw one or two out when I moved.
    I mostly used the 8512, with its .41 dot pitch. It was pretty soft. But, hooked to a Model 30 with MCGA, it was a great monitor.

Works fine, even if the VGA cable has lost its insulation near the VGA connector (it was given to me that way). Mine works on 230V though, as I live in Europe, I guess they made them for both voltages.

    I used to have the 8512 VGA monitor, it was my first color monitor ever, and it was originally paired with my Model 25. I *had* an adapter that connected the MCGA port inside to a VGA connector bracket that attached to the punch out area. It was weird, and I don't know if it was a stock Model 25 offering or a dealer mod where my father purchased his model 25 from back in 87. When I jumped to a 486 and Pentium, I still had the monitor but by the time I went to a Celeron I had a 17" Gateway EV700.

As a matter of fact it was an IBM not this particular model but it was the IBM aptiva E4 series it was a tower based computer. I'm not too sure the model number of the monitor itself but the monitor was also IBM. The computer came with Windows 95 which I then upgraded to Windows 98 later. I had that computer for about 5 years. Later in around two thousand two I thing or two thousand three somewhere around there. A painters brush is pretty good for the slots too besides the microfibre towel & credit card.
    Currently messing with a bit of overclocking on a socket 775 system with my backup gpu a core 2 duo 8400 overclocked as a test too 4.05 ghz & hd 6870.
    Besides a fan pointed at the chipset & a fan behind the cpu cooler (system is setup on one of my kitchen chairs as i sold my testrig which was a socket 1366 system.)
    (Was surprisingly easy too get the cpu too 4 ghz i expected all kinds of tweaking too hit that.
    But nope, a decent voltage setting on cpu 1.37v
    (Probably bit on the high side for the cpu.)
    fsb too 445x9 multi stock is ofc 333 fsb.
    2x2 gb of 1066 mhz ram sticks & its fine for some benchmarking in the legacy 3dmark benchmarks.
    I do in general use dishwashing soap mixed with water like 90/10 mixed in a spraybottle, chemically clean gasoline sometimes for stuff like thermalpaste, microfibre towel, qtips.
    Generic cleaning wipes should work pretty well against grime from foods,drinks on pcb's along with chemically clean gasoline.
