An old electronics repairman I knew would say of Zenith: "The quality goes out before the name falls off."
But seriously, this is a neat looking keypad and I know more than a few people in accounting and finance that live and die by these types of devices.
With all those adapters, Apple would be proud
ShinyCookie it’s not just Apple anymore as most computer and motherboard manufacturers have abandoned old legacy ports so if you want run any old device using serial, parallel, PS2, etc. then you need an adaptor (in some case multiple adaptors). With many modern slim & light laptops you have to sacrifice something when it comes to ports so that’s were seeing more reliance on modern port tech like USB-C which can take the place of many separate ports like USB, DisplayPort, Ethernet, etc. with a USB-C hub taking over for the formally built-in ports. If you rely on a lot of external devices then that might bother you but I think most people use their laptop most of the time in ways don’t really require lots (if any) external ports. You can however still buy laptops with lots of external ports including built-in ext. HDMI or DisplayPort, Ethernet, USB 3, headphone jack, etc. and thus less need for dongles/adaptors, if slim and light is not as important to you.
@@Charlesb88 I mean I was just making a joke but okay
lol the ebay seller must be so puzzled by the sudden surge of customers.
Slick! I’m a big Zenith fan so finding NOS Zenith stuff is blissful to me. I’m also a big Fran fan, and you made your great post even better with your quiet shoutout to Fran, in the lab, again!
😄👍🏻 ByYyYyYyYyYye!
I truly have a soft spot in my heart for Zenith products. Much of my childhood was surrounded by Zenith. I've always wanted to find a Zenith computer, haven't yet. This will have to do for now. Thanks for the link.
Shipping is insane for me, $40 to Europe!
Claaaassic Ebay :)
"This item does not ship to Finland." 😅
eBay.com buying from Europe is a no-go. Not the individual seller's fault. If you find any cases in which shipping (and import) costs are not absolute deal breakers, that's most likely because free shipping is offered in America.
Worse are the ones who do it via GSP. In that case I usually message the seller asking them if they're ok with me providing them my own shipping label. Worked quite good in two cases.
$38.51 shipping to Germany.
i guess i won´t buying this any time soon
:(

It's interesting the differences in shipping costs throughout the world. I still ponder how shipping from China is as cheap as it is, haha!
@@jezzermeii Well,if some one wants to rob you,he will find a way how.

Perfect substitution if the numbers on the original keyboard are not working
Pretty much all modern motherboards have PS/2 ports, it isn't outdated yet.
On most desktop computers.
@Podkova That probably explains why I've seen so many gaming motherboards with a PS/2 port on Amazon.
"Pressing the SCROLL LOCK key activates *that function"*
... even Zenith data systems doesn't know what "that function" is!! :)
Scroll Lock is useful for Linux shell - it changes the behaviour of arrow keys.
Dunno what use does it have in DOS or Windows.
If you turn on Scroll Lock in Microsoft Excel, it switches from the cursor keys moving the selected cell to moving the entire spreadsheet.
I've never been a fan of coiled keyboard cords. (Disclaimer: I was born in 2000, after they fell out of style.) I have an HP Vectra QS/20 (yes, it's my channel namesake) with an AT keyboard port. I use a 1989 IBM Model M 1391401 PS/2 keyboard with it via a PS/2 to AT adapter, and I've never really found a good place to put that big coil. It just always seems to be in the way. It's also hard to connect my other Model M to my KVM switch under my other desk to use with my other computers because of the coil. It's quite literally a bit of a stretch.
I used to have an Everex Step AT keyboard where the cable just fell apart, especially around the coil. I threw it out after that happened. I still have a couple others though.
I was born in the same year of non-coiled keyboard cables. I'd have to agree, they're not the best.
And they’re kind of a pain to clean
Has a rubber dome in the key mechanism but still manages that authentic Alps sound. Nice.
great product!love the zenith video !!!want to go back to those days badly.....
The first thing I thought when I saw this was "it would be funny to use this with a modern laptop or one of those modern mechanical TLK keyboards". Glad to see you had a similar idea. Too bad it's 45$ for shipping to my country.
My Asrock x470 taichi AM4 motherboard has a PS/2 port, which I actually use for my unicomp model m!
It's quite interesting that even relatively high-end consumer-grade motherboards made in late 2018 come with these legacy connectors, and I honestly hope they continue including them.
#Points for Franlab website in the browser.
Interesting to see what I presume is the US version of Teletext there at 9:50
Zenith's Digital System 3 TVs had a built-in decoder for World System Teletext, which was used on some U.S. TV networks in the 1980s, but it never caught on as much as it did in other parts of the world. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_System_Teletext#WST_in_the_United_States
@@vwestlife It's strange how it never caught on in the US; I used it a lot, here in the UK. An enhanced version with extra colours and improved graphics (though backwards compatible) was developed in the 80s, but this never caught on at the time. Fwiw you can generate teletext using the PAL composite output of a Raspberry Pi - software here github.com/peterkvt80/vbit2/wiki If you don't have a PAL TV, a suitable PC capture card can be used to decode it, using the DScaler app.
That's a solid looking number pad! Looks like they're all gone.
Love the advert at the end!
I have only seen something like this at banks or something like that for passwords for debit cards at a bank i used to have which i think they dont do that anymore they have you go to atm to do that. what i like about the coiled cord it has a nice way to give cord tention. to answer what you said about ps/2 ports i have seen some motherboards on tiger direct and newegg that sell with ps/2 ports i believe i have seen them even at walmart computers and best buy having ps/2 ports
welp, looks like I'm going to need to get one to go along with my zenith now.
Yep, most modern motherboards ive seen still have PS/2 ports on them, at least my year old motherboard still has 2 PS/2 ports. One being in use by my Model M :)
Wow look at that connector, i haven't seen something like that in ages.
Good for data entry!
I don't know if we ever got Zenith products here in the UK, I certainly don't remember them.
It was a US brand name, kind of like how you guys the UK had Ferguson and we didn't
that's actually a smart idea removing the keys with an IC remover
I have used a zenith alarm clock from the 1970s for a few years
i also have a ge alarm clock from the 50s :-)
like how you are scrolling up and down fran's website. she rules!
My vintage PCs all have 101 key keyboards, but I could see how this would be a useful item for someone with an 83/84 key keyboard like the old IBM Model Fs... I wonder how the click on these Alps keys comparing to the buckling spring technology on those early IBM keyboards... Nice vid.
My 2018 motherboard still has one PS2 port
Is your computer a desktop computer?
@@morganrussman Yes
Some gamers swear by PS2 Keyboards, still to this day. They recon that input lag times are better on those keyboards than USB. I don't buy it, but it is interesting to hear their reasons.
If everything else fails, like bluetooth or disabled USB, a PS/2 keyboard will come to the rescue.
@@jackbailey5304 maybe if we where talking with USB 1.0 vs PS2 but today the input lag is virtually nonexistent. It's more to what kind of keyboard you like to use.
Finally! A dedicated controller to play D/Generation!
Great deal in the Ptouch ribbon. $10 off!
There are still a lot of Gaming mainboards that have PS/2 ports. Sadly most of them have only one combination port, but I'd never use a PS/2 mouse on a modern machine anyway as the USB options are so much more precise. Have you opened the pad and looked for an AT/XT-switch?
I have an old Samsung branded AT keyboard that does have that switch on the inside but no hint it would be there on the outer shell.
Yes, some modern motherboards have PS/2 connectors. Mine has two PS/2 ports and my old board had a combo port (🤮)
Fran!
I used to have one exactly like it, but rebranded to something local.
Hey . Its Fran ,again.
In the lab!
@@vwestlife Fran, Lab!
If you go on the wikipedia page for Zenith Data Systems they actually have a picture of how this was intented to be used with a zenith laptop upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/92/Zenith_supersPORT_sx_Laptop.JPG/1280px-Zenith_supersPORT_sx_Laptop.JPG
That a nice keypad
you can use PS/2 to USB converter adapter on your laptop!
This reminds me of the old Wang numbers key pad that I had to argue for weeks with my boss before he finally broke down and got it.
Cool!
So, you basically got a similar level of dongle tinkering as many modern MacBook users today with their USB-C for anything approach... Let's hope the trend doesn't spread like a pest to all the rest of manufacturers, but I fear that will probably be the case.
modern motherboards still support ps/2 but they have one combo port, its mainly to support people who really like an older peripheral
Not all of them. Most 3rd-party manufacturers like MSI and ASUS will still have them on their MBs (I've got one of the last generation workstation MBs with floppy and IDE), but go for a Lenovo, HP, etc these days, and it's all USB.
Can you get an adapter for the other computers and still use the numerical keyboard?
Sold out!
A lot of motherboards being produced for gaming PCs have PS/2 ports to allow gamers to use cheaper, older mechanical keyboards and mice
Cheaper?! -- www.pckeyboard.com/page/category/EnduraPro and that's for a remake;
try an eBay shock for the real thing.
5:00 My recent ASUS motherboard has both PS/2 mouse and keyboard 😀
Nice video but I have a question, what is the web browser that appears on the video? I don't recognize it.
Are those switches similar to the ones in a Dell AT-101W? I've got that keyboard (I can't afford a model M) and they're a little rough but very nice.
Edit: nope! I didn't watch the whole video. They are quite different.
My car's window switches are Alps brand stitches
What are they like to type on?
Alps also made rotary type rheostats controls for radios in the 1980s and 1990s as well.
is that 1 adapter per decade? :)
in the 2020s you probably will need a USB A to type-C adapter so not too far off I bet
@@Sb129 and even further: An cellular network router with custom firmware and an Wi-FI to USB adapter, and a powerbank to power all of it because "the reptiles" have banned anything over 37 volts

VWestlife I have an HP Vectra LS/12, which is a Zenith SuperSPort 286 (non-'e'). Do you happen to know if the 286 SuperSport adheres to the AT standard? The keyboards are slightly different than the SuperSport, so I'm guessing they might.
BTW, I've had the LS/12 for almost 2 decades and bought it from the original owner, who was an HP employee (the laptop was an HP company asset and has a sticker at the bottom). I recently replaced the HDD with a CF and it works beautiful... Boots to DOS in a split second after POST. Reminds me of Tandy 1000 series machines with DOS in ROM. They keyboards on these vintage Zenith laptops are amazing. DOS based word processors are a pleasure to write on, and the LS/12 being a 286 has a 1.44MB floppy drive, which makes exchanging files with my modern PCs a little easier than with 720K formatted floppies...which seem to be hit and miss.
Yes, the SuperSport 286 uses the AT keyboard interface.
@@vwestlife thank you, sir! I just ordered one. The eBay seller should pay you commission!
I was going to buy one until I heard the jingle.
I just noticed you were on the Frantone website, do you play any instruments?
6:21 you mean you don't try to enter pi to the decimal on a numerical keypad in one key press?
Mmmmm clicky switches
What part of America are you from mate? As an Aussie, to me you sound exactly like Ray Romano from Everybody Loves Raymond. Love your videos

i got a zenith laptop ^^ a 286
Just looked on ebay. 14 sold in 24hrs. Only 6 left. He may be searching for more to buy seeing them sell so fast, lol. I wonder if he knows why?
This is meant for laptops, so why does it have a full-size 5-pin DIN rather than the 6-pin PS2 mini-DIN?
Because early laptops did have a full-size 5-pin DIN keyboard port.
@@vwestlife Really? Aside from those massive luggables, the earliest ones I've seen were always 6-pin mini-DIN.
My Zenith SuperSport, Tandy 1400LT, and Toshiba T3200 all have the 5-pin DIN keyboard port.
@@vwestlife Hmm. Didn't know that.
Tandy 1400 would be a nice one to pick up some time to go with my other Tandy 1000's. They tend to be a little pricey though.

rubber domes :/
But with sliders, which makes them "semi-mechanical".
