According to Neil Finn in an interview, it's an homage to a line in John Lennon's Across the Universe - "words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup"
This song was played at my husband's funeral. He passed unexpectedly on April 12, 2019. The core of this group was the Finn brothers (Neil and Tim), and they were in a band before that was a pretty popular new wave band (Split Enz). I remember how refreshing their sound was when this came out, as it was one of the earlier 80s pop songs that was more folk-influenced and got back to using real drums and guitars. They had two more albums that came out after this one that were quite successful. Great songs of theirs are : "Something So Strong", "Better Be Home Soon", "Chocolate Cake", and "Weather With You". You should check them out!
So, Split Enz have a personnel (member) connection with Crowded House and/or they are essentially the evolution of the "same" band (the core at least)? Interesting trivia! I did not know this but it explains why they sound so similar.
The band was formed by Neil Finn, Paul Hester and Nick Seymour. Finn and Hester were in Split Enz at the time they split in 1984. They then recruited Seymour to create the trio that was Crowded House. Tim Finn didn’t join until the 90’s
If I remember this right, this song was the last one they released before the band split up. I was 6 at the time this was released and I remember them playing on a childrens tv show on a Saturday morning, they had a little interview before hand.

You would hear this in stores when shopping, all over the place. It's a huge forever-classic that just gets played everywhere. Background in cafes, you name it. And it's one of those songs musicians love, too, so it's really held in esteem across a lot of genres, which is why it gets so much play in so many places. Brilliant... Brad & Lex you should watch the live performance at the Sydney Opera House When the band split up it was the very last song they ever played together such an amazing performance, unfortunately the band never played together again as the drummer Paul took his own life. Great band..
Spaghetti wood, laugh. Perfect. This song was so popular in the 80s, it was on the radio all the time and MTV and played in the clubs and House Parties. Surely it's been in TV shows and movies. It's that whole 80s pop thing and it reminds me of bands like Madness, soft so, the Eurythmics, Flock of Seagulls, Boy George, on and on. I didn't particularly like that genre at the time because I was into what I thought was more interesting stuff, but it was part of the fabric of my life because you heard it everywhere and many of my friends or into it. I'm listening to it now, it is definitely one of the better ones and of course it gives me a nostalgic feeling and it feels good.

Best pop song of the 80’s ! I always wanted AGNOSTIC FRONT to cover this song.
I’m always overcome by nostalgia and a sense of melancholy whenever I hear this song. Went through a lot of changes in the 80s. Graduated high school, became a Marine, got married, and this song seems to have been a part of my soundtrack back then. It’s just an iconic 80s song.
I love this song and the memories it brings. And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart... the best is the performance at the Opera House. So emotional.
"Weather With You" would be a great next song to listen to, from Cowded House. Neill, Finn, the singer and band leader, is extremely talented!
God how time flies so many years, yet they still play this and many memories come flooding back.
You would hear this in stores when shopping, all over the place. It's a huge forever-classic that just gets played everywhere. Background in cafes, you name it. And it's one of those songs musicians love, too, so it's really held in esteem across a lot of genres, which is why it gets so much play in so many places.
I saw these guys on tour for this album, a nice theatre with about 4,000 people, and we all sang every word of this song. It's one of my fondest concert memories.
This one's been on my playlist as long as I can remember.
Forgot how much I love this song!
Great 80s tune. Its got that nostalgic sound.
School disco song with the bangles walk like an Egyptian another one haha
Growing up in the 80's I remember this song,Everything about it is beautiful.I remember it being played on the movie "The Stand" in 1994 as part of that movies soundtrack.
Beautiful song from my long life. A true classic.
This song is another hugely popular 80s hit that still gets a lot of airplay up to today. Weddings, the grocery store, tv shows - there are countless places where you guys could have heard it
Lexis taste of 80s is amusing, she has good hearing for music!
It feels like a hug or a w3ark blanket. That is so spot on. thats what this song does, it warps you up in a warm feeling. so beautifully written lyrics and melodies. Neil Finn was in a band (Split Enz) with his brother Tim before Crowded House and their songs are worth a look as well.
I first heard the Finn bothers during a Sunday free concert in Albert Park Auckland as Split Enz, came across them many years later as Crowded House living in Australia. Such talent
Crowded House are soooo amazing, I grew up with them on the radio every day.
"Don't Dream It's Over" was prominently featured in the 1994 miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's novel The Stand.
Lex, your reactions to old music are delightful! You make me smile as I listen to these great tunes again! Thanks!
One of the most definitive songs of the 80s. It was a great little slow dance tune as well. Love Crowded House. Brings back a ton of memories.
The waiting room at my dentist is where I first heard this song...waaaay back when it was first released.
Has a cool chill, calming vibe...great when awaiting a cavity repair. LOL.
I've also heard this at many wedding receptions. I like it.
Brilliant... Brad & Lex you should watch the live performance at the Sydney Opera House
When the band split up it was the very last song they ever played together such an amazing performance, unfortunately the band never played together again as the drummer Paul took his own life. Great band..
One of the prettiest songs ever written
Look at Lex with that little groove 😊
Hope you doing good Brad. I can never tell.
Brad looks bewildered again. Think his blinkers are only so wide. If its not a very certain thing , it doesn't meet his limited sensory perception.
Yes, finally..... you've come across the rabbit hole of Aussie music .....where do I start?
Rose Tattoo,Noiseworks,Hunters and Collectors,Midnight Oil,The Angels,The Radiators,John Farnham,Skyhooks,The Divinyls,Icehouse,Air Supply and Silverchair.....
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Try You Better Be Home Soon by Crowded House.....my favourite track of theirs by far.
Or Hold On by The Models.....one of the sleeper classics of the 80's...... absolutely perfect.
One of the best songs from the 80's. The last concert they played in Australia they closed with this song. So emotional.
As a proud kiwi it's so good to see you reacting to Crowded House. One of the most revered Oz/kiwi bands ever. RIP Paul Hester.
Love your channel guys. ❤️
The year this song came out, I was earnestly trying to learn guitar, so I would learn EVERYTHING the radio offered...this was a song I learned to play and love, for many reasons. It brings me back...and isn't that what great music is supposed to do?
Beautiful song ….. and that catch line ‘don’t dream it’s over’ ….. superb on so many levels
I love Lex's similes about Grandma's house and how comfy it made her!
Someone already commented that this song is on nearly every 80s playlist that you may hear anywhere you go, like shopping malls or supermarkets or the local convenience store. I am also certain that parts of this song have been used in countless television commercials for decades now.
