Paul Stanley once said that someone isn't a songwriter if a song doesn't rhyme. I wish someone would tell him that Paul McCartney and Neil Finn are the 2 greatest songwriters alive.
There are rhymes in this song, and there aren't and it's one of the greatest songs ever written.

They're still making it! There's a different lineup now (Neil Finn, Nick Seymour the original bassist, Mitchell Froom on keyboards - he produced the first 3 Crowded House albums & played keyboards on them, and Neil's sons Liam on guitar & backing vocs & Elroy on drums. And their NEW ALBUM called Dreamers Are Waiting comes out JUNE 4: depending where you live that's either TOMORROW or THE NEXT DAY! They toured New Zealand a couple months ago. They were also scheduled to tour more countries but those were postponed due to coronavirus.
If you want to hear some really fantastic (aka finntastic) music, Neil did a lot of livestreams (for a while he did them every day!) during coronavirus - his songs, covers, answering listener questions, once he took a call from Mick Fleetwood (I'm not a fan of FM but it's cool for their fans), botany/gardening, his 4 yr old grandson Buddy making appearances talking & playing trumpet - sometimes Neil alone (those were my favorite) sometimes assisted by his sons, and post-quarantine Nick & Mitchell (Nick is wonderful). They're archived on neilfinn.com: click on FANGRADIO.

@@DreamsSketcher I understand that because the lyrics are hopeful but the tone of the song and pace always made me sad as a kid. The song reminds me when a bad period of time is brand new and thats when uncertainty, change is at its highest and you have no hope at the time so you say "don't dreams it over." to keep you going in a era of your life.
The Beach Boy's "Wouldn't it be nice." Is actually one of the saddest songs around even though it sounds like a light hearted love song. It's about how he could wish he was in a long lasting and loving relationship that's probably never going to happen. Songs of hopefulness can carry sadness to it as well but I love "Don't dream its over." for the emotions it triggers in me.

"Tie my hands behind my back
Put a gag on top of my mouth
But I won't give you up
      Till silverware's covered in dust
      And my shoes fall apart
      And the tumbleweed runs
      Over my desert heart
      So turn and run
      You cold killers of innocence
      Against us there's no defence
      Your flash and your wickedness
Will surely bring you down again
      Somehow we must stay afloat
Won't give in to the undertow
      Something's you will never know
      You can't break our love
      You can pull us down

      Thanks for mentioning H&C.
I met Mark and John Archer briefly, after a gig in a small club here in Hollywood around the time of The Jaws of Life. After that, I'd see them play in small clubs.
I wore a black chauffeur's cap and stood in the front row. Mark Seymour would grab it off my head and wear it for about three songs, then put it back. This happened at two different shows. Lots of fun.
It was insane to be interacting with Hunters and Collectors while they were playing, but I realized he is one of those guys who always looks soooo serious, but is actually quite funny.

I totally agree Depression is hideous disease RIP Paul. The concert they had on the opera house steps was their best ever live performance without a doubt.

FINALLY!!! My absolute favorite band of all time (if the Beatles never existed, of course). Neil Finn is a god. And yes, Nick Seymour is a criminally underrated bassist.

I'm a die-hard metal guy through and through, but man I gotta tell ya this is one of the best songs ever written and recorded. Absolutely love everything about it, and it has a great message behind it. Great choice and great job with the channel. Cheers!

This song came out late 1986. I’ve been a fan of it since then (I was 8 years old). It has always been a guiding light for me and one of my all time favorite songs. Possibly THE best song for me. So cool to see people coming to it for the first time & showing it the love and appreciation it deserves 💜✌🏻

One of my top ten bands. Their lyrics are poetry and the music is amazing. "Weather with You", "Sister Madly", "Better Be Home Soon", "Pineapple Head" just to name a few.

Absolutely iconic 80s song. I get a little nostalgic when I hear it, and I get a bit melancholy.

Neil Finn the singer is a hero musical here in NZ where he's from, also. It's from the 80's & made it to #2 on US charts (probably the first kiwi in our wee country to do so) kicking their bigger career into gear. The bass & drummer are Australian, where Crowded House were based. They've only just played a big venue in Auckland, which was sold out. bc we're all ok to gig atm. The line up now involves his two sons, as well as keyboards, I think. The drummer in this vid sadly took his life quite a few years ago. Depression... Neil also was hand-picked by Fleetwood Mac to tour their last tour with them. Controversial as Fleetwood's long life band member was fired, but regardless we were all so proud & happy for Neil. Their concert was dope! He's done so much for this country's music scene, & written for really big names in international music, & is still just a down-to-earth kiwi.

Yep....go across to hunters and collectors, the makers, Tim solo, back to split enz, back to early split enz, then to the swingers, then to movie soundtracks (Phil Judd and crowded house)....probably missing a few offshoots/related projects.....
