  • On March 24 2012 I made my first visit to a Severn Valley Railway Spring Steam Gala, and, as always with the SVR, it didn't disappoint. The line fielded a superb line up with 5 guests and 3 residents running on each day, with the residents varying. On the day of my visit, locomotives in action were:

    |GNR N2 'Teddy Bear' 0-6-2T 1744 (Courtesy of the Gresley Society and the Great Central Railway [Loughborough] )
    |LMS 3F 'Jinty' 0-6-0T 47406 (Courtesy of Roger Hibbert and the Great Central Railway [Loughborough] )
    RESIDENT:
    |LMS 4MT 'Flying Pig' 2-6-0 43106
    |LMS 5MT 'Stanier Mogul' 2-6-0 42968
    |GWR 78xx 'Manor' 4-6-0 7812 'Erlestoke Manor'
Unlike the 2011 Autumn Steam Gala, all the booked visiting locomotives appeared, although it was a close call. There were concerns that the ongoing winter repairs to the Caledonian Goods loco would not be finished in time for the Gala, but thanks to a Herculean effort by the SVR and the SLPT, the loco was steam tested on Thursday Evening, ran in on Friday Morning in the Bridgnorth yard, and completed its afternoon runs double heading with the Jinty, which had been brought in to substitute for 828 should she not be available. On Saturday 828 completed her booked diagrams and the Jinty took those of Small Prairie 4566, which acted as spare at Bewdley. The plan I did was:
    |0850 Kidderminster -- Arley (4464)
    |Walk to Northwood Halt and Back
    |1433 Arley -- Highley (42968)
    |1530 Highley -- Kidderminster (42968)
As you can see, I spent much of the time linesiding (from legal vantage points) around Arley, which was fantastically rewarding. I did not venture further north than Highley, partly because most of the action I wanted to see was between Kidderminster and Highley, and partly because I didn't end up having time. I did regret not seeing more of the Caley Goods, however.
I would like to thank the SVR for once again putting on a superb gala, the owning groups of 4464, 828, 69023, 1744 and 47406 for allowing their locomotives to appear, and you for taking your time to watch this video.
